Slideshow software alternative to iPhoto

I create slideshows for weddings & other events on a periodic basis. When I do this in Final Cut, I have absolute control over every slide in terms of transitions, movements, and time onscreen, but it's very time intensive and most people don't want to pay for the time involved.
When I create slideshows in iPhoto, it's a simple and straightforward approach that's less expensive, but I don't have any control over individual photos that I might want to do something different with. It's a one-way only setup.
I'm looking for a "middle of the road" software program that has templates for slideshow creation that I can just plug the pics into, but still allows for some control with each photo (transitions, time onscreen, and even movement of the photo if possible.
Does anyone have a good recommendation for Mac?
Thanks!!

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico: http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie 6 as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast, for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 8 from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • IPhoto/iDVD Slideshow Software Options?

I have been unhappy with the resultant quality of slideshows that I have created in iPhoto and exported ('shared') with iDVD. The iPhoto quality is outstanding but I find significant quality degradation in iDVD in terms of clarity and smoothness of Ken Burns effect motion. This poor quality carries-over to the iDVD burned DVD-R.
Does anyone have recommendations for alternate slideshow software options that produce clear, crisp and smooth motion slideshow DVDs?

Have you asked over in the iDVD forum also? Any DVD authoring program will not be as sharp as what you see in iPhoto or on your computer because all media is reduced to 720 x 540 pixels. The same goes for videos. Smaller videos are scaled up and that's where you can lose image quality.
The two links below are to Apple KB documents on preparing stills and videos for iDVD.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6732.html

Photo to Movie has received good reports in this forum. When using the KB effect you need to use the largest image available. Not so much with just still photos. As far as videos with motion you did use the Professional Quality setting, right?
In finishing up the iDVD project are you saving it as a disk image first? Then you can check the encoding by playing it with DVD Player before burning. Burn to disc with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • Has anyone used an app with the Maverick software to burn iPhoto slideshows to DVD disks that will play on any DVD player?

Has anyone used an app with the new Maverick software to burn iphoto slide shows to DVDs that will play on a standard DVD player?  This probably cannot be a demo app in that the amout of photos on the slideshows is large.
    Thank you,
    Jim

Export the slideshow from iPhoto, that makes a movie of it.
Do you want to use this DVD in a domestic DVD player? If so, then the disk will have to be 'authored' to make it the correct form for that. If you have iDVD then that's the app you use. However, iDVD is no longer developed or distributed by Apple. You may be able to get it on an old iLIfe install disk.
    Other options:
    Burn: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/21992/burn
    Toast: http://macupdate.com/app/mac/6351/toast-titanium
But there are lots of others too. Search on the App Store or MacUpdate

  • Slideshow software-which best to use?

I will admit I posted this first on Final Cut Express as I wasn't sure where to post my question.  But, as I found other posts, many similar, but much older, posts (ie software options probably much different now) were posted on iDVD's forum... And, since that is where videos are generally sent for DVD encoding regardless of source software, I figured I should post here as well.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!
I want a software application that will create stunning slideshows (I intend to offer my services for slideshows and want to have a better than basic set of options).  I have Aperture, iMovie (of course), Keynote and iPhoto (of course) that can all do slideshows.  I have always used iMovie.  And, it provides great product.  But, I'd like to add a bit more to it.  I think animation is the correct term... I want to be able to have multiple photos on a page, each doing different things maybe (some of the themes on iDVD do this in the menu... having photos flow across the screen) or having photos stack on top of each other (Aperture has a theme that does this-- but then the whole project is that unless you piecemeal a slideshow into mini sections and then maybe add to iMovie, if that is even possible or even desirable if things won't look consistent).  I also like the ability to have a few photos on a screen shot and then zoom in on each photo individually and back out etc.-- zooming in or out with a twist is great too (meaning as you zoom in or out, the photo rotates).
Everywhere I have looked online, I seem to not be alone in finding software that can provide a bit more.  This is generally what I have found:
Final Cut Pro can probably do whatever I'd like (maybe plugins would be desired to get smoother/easier results), but it will probably be overqualified and pricy for my purposes ($300 + plugins).
Final Cut Express is no longer sold by Apple, but copies are available from other outlets.  I have heard mixed reviews on quality and have even heard that it still is not geared toward slideshows so it is not necessarily a smooth process. (and is still around $180), but plugins are available to add.
ProShow is a Windows based program that everone rants about.  But, it is a Windows platform-- which, I've read you can get Parallels software to load PC software onto the Mac.  Not really desirable for me.  There is a reason I abandoned the PC and I don't want to bring those troubles with me to my Mac.
There is a web-based version that lets you build slideshows online.  As far as I can tell, you can try it out... but, eventually you'd need to pay a yearly fee and not all features are available there (but there might be ways of adding features by paying for add-ons to your subscription-- haven't ventured there yet). $30/year or $150/year
I have a PC yet.  As it is quite a few years old, I don't know how sluggish it would be with such a program.  The program runs $70 or $250 depending on which level of software you get.  There are additional sets of themes for $20 a disk so that you can expand your program.  Portions of some of those themed disks are only applicable to the $250 program.NOTE: I had to use my PC recently as I had a program that would allow multiple camera angles on a single file to create a wedding video for my nephew.  Wishing iMovie would allow multiple camera files running side by side so you can choose which camera angle to view at different parts of the video time.
There are a couple Mac-based programs I have downloaded free demos of:  One of them is: Pulpmotion.
It seems to be the closest to what I want, but the themes seem a little cartoonish (the company has a Kidsmotion program which looks like a great option to let your kids get creative, but I don't see the adult Pulpmotion version to be that much more sophisticated in the themes.)  I am looking for elegant... with some fun themes.  There are a lot of themes, so maybe I just need to search for my favorites.  But, my gut says you would not want to do a wedding slideshow with this program, but would be great for a fun slideshow for kids or just a review of a year, or maybe a high school graduation growing up video.
It comes in two versions- Pulpmotion and Pulpmotion Advanced.  $50, $130
The second Mac-based program is Fantashow by Wondershare.  It appears to be a new program out there (version 1).  It is decent, but the music selection doesn't line up with photos.  You just drop the music lineup below all the photos.  And, as such, you have a hard time seeing where the you are in the timeline.  It has great potential as you can choose themes to use on batches of photos (ie have photos be pulled from a sphere for those five photos... and then build up six photos on top of each other, etc.) all in the same slideshow.  And it is only $50.
I have heard a lot of buzz on Fotomagico.  It has only a five-day trial period.  So, I have held off downloading until I know I have five days to devoting to testing it.   Rather frustrating as the two competitors above have 30 days I believe.  Just for that, I feel like boycotting it.  But, if I find it has what I need, what am I to do?  The examples they show online don't seem that spectacular other than the person who put the slideshow together did a great job .... but no appearance of animation or any unusual transitions, etc(ie, iMovie could probably produce the same result).  So, I am leary of even putting a lot of hope in that program.  It has a home version and a pro version.  $29 or $140
In regards to the programs I already own:
iMovie does an excellent job... and I could continue using this program and produce wonderful results, but I'd like to expand my options in regards to themes and capabilities to add a bit more artistic approach to it (without having to spend hours using multiple programs to make it happen).
Keynote, I have not tinkered a lot on... but, some of the features in regards to animation and some other effects seem quite nice.  But not sure how I could make it turn into a glamorous slideshow.  And, I'd have to figure out how to set the duration of each slide.  And, not sure if I can set more than one song to it... unless I export the slideshow sans music and add music in iMovie... but, then I'd need to monkey with length of time.. and I don't want to have to work back and forth in Keynote just to line up music and video.  I really want a software that I can stay in for the duration and then send to where I need to for encoding, if possible (I already do enough of the multi-application workflows, I don't want my slideshows to be that way too.)
iPhoto-- haven't tried.  But, assume it isn't going to be any more customizable than Aperture (which I will describe below).
Aperture seems to be a decent option... but, it is canned slideshow software.  There are ways to tweak things but it seems to be a workaround (ie, if you want less photos on a page, you can add text and it will split it up into two slides, etc.) but you can't seem to determine when it does switch animations (ie.  finishing one set of photo stacks and beginning a new one in the scrapbook theme)
So, I have, what I thin to be, a bunch of information above.  But, I haven't been able to find anything that has knocked my socks off.  So, I thought I'd ask you guys if you have experienced the pleasure of using any of the above softwares or, perhaps, different ones that will meet my needs (and hopefully not cost too much)  [too much for me would mean over $150, although, I'd prefer something under $80--but, if I am going to be discontent at $80-$150, I’d prefer to spend the little extra on a $180-$200 program]  You may know more about a software that I have that I was unaware of or could point me to a better direction.
Please provide any input you have.  I have obviously spent some time looking for something!
also... if you could identify the programs that do or do not "blur" (I think that is the term---- it is where when encoded, it does something to the files so that as the kens burns effect goes, it reduces the pixelation)
I basically want a good balance between presets (that are still classy) and the ability to tailor/adjust the presets as I see fit.

I admit that I have not had time to read your entire post, but this is how I suggest making slideshows:
There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).

  • "slideshow" software?

I have been using iphoto 09 for my slideshows but am getting bored with the themes.  I would like to use the themes from iphoto 11 but am afraid to upgrade after hearing all the horror stories about it.  Is there a good ( and simple) slideshow software that offers lots of themes and can be imported into imovie easily?
    thanks!

    Alternatives to iPhoto's slideshow include:
    iMovie, on every Mac sold.
Others, in order of price: PhotoPresenter  $29
    PhotoToMovie  $49.95
    PulpMotion  $129
FotoMagico $29 (Home version) ($149 Pro version, which includes PhotoPresenter)
    Final Cut Pro X $299
It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs. However, there is no doubt that Final Cut Pro X is the most capable app of them all. You get what you pay for.

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • Slideshow project shared from iPhoto causes iDVD to crash

I've searched the forum and found a few threads that sounded like they pertained to this issue, but I didn't see much discussion beyond the question or any answers that had confirmations that they solved the problem.
I've created a slideshow project in iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5), and I used the "Send to iDVD" option from the "Share" menu to send it to iDVD '08 (version 7.0.4). The export appears to work, a menu button appears in iDVD, and I'm able to work in iDVD to make changes to the theme, menu text, etc. However, if I try to actually view the slideshow movie in iDVD (either by double clicking on the menu button in the iDVD interface, or by using the "Preview DVD playback" button and then choosing the movie from the DVD menu), iDVD crashes. This is happening consistently. I've gone to my Movies folder and found the exported movie file that iPhoto created. This plays back in QuickTime Player just fine. If I add the movie to my iDVD project manually (as opposed to using the "Send to iDVD" option in iPhoto), it still causes iDVD to crash if I try to preview it.
Out of curiosity I brought a non-iPhoto generated QuickTime movie into iDVD, and it played back with no problem. I checked the compression format. The movie that worked was an Apple Motion JPG A movie file. I tried another non-iPhoto generated QuickTime movie file. This time iDVD crashed again. I noticed that this second non-iPhoto generated movie file said it was using the "Apple MPEG4 Decompressor" which is the same format as the movie file that iPhoto did create. I then tried an Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2 QuickTime movie file and that worked just fine. Is that the problem? Apple MPEG-4 Decompressor movie files cause iDVD to crash? Could that really be possible when this is the format that iPhoto uses when exporting? Is there a solution? I don't see a way to select a different compression format when exporting/sharing a slideshow from iPhoto.
I discovered this problem while teaching a class to 12 students who don't know much about doing creative projects on a Mac. There are going to be 12 folks who don't think very much of Apple's computers and/or its software if I don't get this problem solved quickly (last day of class is tomorrow). Everything has been going along swimmingly up until this final step of getting the slideshow into iDVD and then burning it to take home. I'm stunned that this isn't working since I've never run into this problem before, but it's happening consistently with every workstation I've tried here in this lab. All computers are running iLife '08. We're all trying to do the same thing. Slideshow project created in iPhoto, trying to send it to iDVD for burning. I been doing stuff with iPhoto and iDVD for years without problems, so I didn't think I needed to run through an entire process here in this lab before teaching the class. I just expected everything to work like it always does. D'oh!
    Help!

    UPDATE:
In case you're interested.... Just because iDVD crashes when I try to preview my slideshow movie from iPhoto doesn't mean I can't successfully burn my DVD project to disc. I was skeptical, but it works. The burn process went off without a hitch, and the DVD plays back using Mac OS X's built-in DVD Player.
Another workaround is to use the "OneStep DVD from Movie..." option in the iDVD file menu and avoid working inside of iDVD.
Someone suggested that perhaps my trouble was connected to using a legacy theme as opposed to one of the newest 7.0 themes. Any truth to that?
Just because I can burn a DVD successfully doesn't mean I wouldn't still like to fix the crash problem if possible. I'm grateful that I now know that I can work around the crashing problem, but I do think it's something that should be fixed and not just avoided.

Since when is updating your software a bad thing?
When the Software Maker mucks up and pushes out a bad update. It happens. Some folks on here had their Faces processes bunged up by an update, others have graphics issues induced by upgrading to 10.6. These things happen to every software manufacturer at some time or other. And that's just two current examples. It is impossible to test every bit of software on every concievable hardware and software scenario.
I agree there should be an on/off switch, but I do think that ppl are stubborn when it comes to updating their software. I think that this is meant to benefit the vast majority of users who don't bother to update their software, than the minority who do.
And that's where forums like this are invaluable. Before you apply an update you can come here and see if other folks have an issue and then decide for yourself if you want to apply the update.
Unless, that is, you use Picasa (or Chrome, or their Search Utility). In these cases you specifically give Google the right to update the software on your machine with whatever they think fit whenever they think fit. And you cannot install Picasa without agreeing to this.
    Correct. Moving along...
Why on earth would a software maker want this unlimited access to your Machine?
They're not getting "unlimited access" to my/your/anyone's machine. They're updating a piece of software installed on your machine. You agreed to let them update the software when you installed it--this is hardly a bad thing letting the developer update their software.
Don't believe me? Read the EULA or see here:
    http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Picasa/thread?tid=27117d0828181bf3&hl=en#a ll
This is a forum link, not a direct link to the EULA. The EULA is in the software upon installing it, and on this link:
    http://picasa.google.com/intl/en_US/web/tos.html
Other oddities when in that Licence agreement:
You give Google unlimited rights to use your images as they think fit:
By submitting, posting or displaying the content you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive licence to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute any Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services.
Correct. I've read the Picasa EULA and your quote is correct, yet incomplete. The EULA also states....
"You retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Content which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services." << In other words, Google is stating, clearly, that you own the copyright to all of your content and Google is not trying to take that way from you.
....it is very clear what is considered"content" and what is "services". You do not give up any rights to your content, period. The quote you mention above has more to deal with the online portion of the Picasa software, not with the Desktop app itself--it'sunder the Picasa EULA under sec. 1.1 (the very, very top), as stated...
+1.1 "Your use of Google's products, software, services, and _web sites_ _(referred to collectively as the "Services" in this document and excluding any services provided to you by Google under a separate written agreement)_ is subject to the terms of the legal agreement between you and Google.+
Now, when you read it up close, it is saying that anything you transmit to Picasa that is public may be used in the front page advertising (just like Flickr does, _see below_). Moreover, they put this in the EULA...
+In addition, by submitting, posting or displaying Content _which is intended to be available to the general public_, you grant Google a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free license to reproduce, adapt, distribute and publish such Content for the purpose of displaying, distributing and promoting Google services. _Google will discontinue this licensed use within a commercially reasonable period after such Content is removed from Picasa Web Albums._ Google reserves the right to refuse to accept, post, display or transmit any Content in its sole discretion.+
    Here's Yahoo/Flickr's EULA....
    http://info.yahoo.com/legal/us/yahoo/utos/utos-173.html
+Yahoo! does not claim ownership of Content you submit or make available for inclusion on the Yahoo! Services. However, with respect to Content you submit or make available for inclusion on publicly accessible areas of the Yahoo! Services, _you grant Yahoo! the following worldwide, royalty-free and non-exclusive license(s), as applicable_+
If you read either of them, they are both telling you the *exact same thing*--make it public, we'll use it. You can post to either service as private or unlisted, but what's the point? Plus, they are not going to use anything that is not intended for the general public (as Google's EULA specifically states) for their own advertising.
I think ppl have this misconception that Google is going on your computer, ripping your photos out from under you, and showing your kid's 4th birthday party photos all over Google Ads. Bottom line, it is only saying that if you make something Public, it's possible that it will end up as part of a gallery advertisement just as it would on a Google or Yahoo Image search.
Perhaps you're a trusting soul and I'm a jaded cynic. But I wouldn't give that right to anybody.
Hey, don't get me wrong....I've got my tin foil hat right here but there is a lot of misinformation out there and ppl take things out of context. Plus, if you think Google's EULA is "scary", read Facebook's EULA sometime. I can sooner understand people's concern over privacy than I do over the concern over copyright.

  • Can I play multiple iphoto slideshows without returning to iphoto interface

Is there a way to play several slideshows sequentially? When giving a presentation, I do not want to have to go back to the clutter of the iphoto interface. I do not want to make quicktime movies and run as a DVD.
A menu for slideshows would be swell. Can automator be configured to do this?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Certainly sending the slideshow to iDVD will make that 640 x 480. However, I'm not sure that's the case with File -> Export, even for iPhoto 6. Have you explored the exporting options? And as to tired or old, well, later versions export to HD quality.
    Alternatively, use another app:

It's difficult to compare these apps. They have differences in capability - some are driven off templates. some aren't. Some have a wider variety of transitions. Others will have excellent audio controls. It's worth checking them out to see what meets your needs.

When you see a white screen with an Apple logo in the middle, you can release the keys.
Click Disk Utility, and then click Continue.
In the list at the left, select the item you want to repair. (Be sure to select an item that’s indented to the right in the list, not an item at the far left.)
    Click First Aid.
If Disk Utility tells you the disk is about to fail, back it up and replace it. You can’t repair it.
    Click Repair Disk.
If Disk Utility reports that the disk appears to be OK or has been repaired, you’re done.
Otherwise, you may need to do one of the following steps.
If Disk Utility can’t repair your disk or it reports “The underlying task reported failure,” try to repair the disk or partition again. If that doesn’t work, back up as much of your data as possible, reformat the disk, reinstall Mac OS X, and then restore your backed-up data.
If you continue to have problems with your disk, it may be physically damaged and need to be replaced

I finally was successful in burning a CD of a slideshow I created in iPhoto, however, it is blurry. What is the best way to burn to a CD or DVD for clarity. Also, I realize if burned in iPhoto it will only be playable in iPhoto. Help! This is needed soon for a wedding reception!

What version of iPhoto are you using?  How do you plan to view the slideshow at the wedding reception, on a TV screen?  If so then you will need to send the slideshow to iDVD and burn a disk from there.
If you're in iPhoto 11 and the slideshow was created in the slideshow mode and not from an album, then go to the Share menu and select iDVD.  That will create a QT movie of the slideshow and import it into iDVD.
In iDVD select your theme and setup the menu as you'd like.  If you want the movie to begin plahying immediately when the disk is inserted into the DVD player go into the Gallery mode and drag the movie into the Autostart  bin at the left.
If you want the movie to loop continuously go to the Advanced menu and select Loop.
When you're finished setting upb the iDVD project save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will allow you to check it with DVD Player before tryingto burn to disk.  Mount the disk imnage by double clicking on it and launch DVD Player and play.  If the movie plays as you want and everything is good you can  burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

The PDF file and slideshow view corrupted using iPhoto. Macbook air only get corrupted slideshow and Mac Mini both slideshow and PDF file is corrupted.

Saving as a PDF file for some users have been a problem.  If you boot into  Safe Mode and run iPhoto you can create undamaged PDF files.  We don't know why the problem but this is a workaround.
This problem prevents many from ordering books, calendars and cards since iPhoto creates PDF file of them for uploading and printing.  Booting into Safe Mode lets them successfully order those items.

  • What is an alternative to iPhoto?

    Hi,
I am looking for an free alternative to Iphoto.  Can anyone recommend one?
Also, before my HD failed a few months back I had Iphoto and now the app store is saying I have to pay 14.99 for it.  I dont remember paying for it originally when I purchased my MB Pro.  Do you think I should call Apple and tell them this?
    Thanks

Thanks.  I do not see it in the Mac App store
