Slideshow stretching to fill widescreen Dell

I have a dell 2005FPW with a Mini, and one of my only complaints is a problem in creating a slideshow that does not look like the image is squished. I realize the aspect ratio of the Dell (1.6) does not match that of the photos...most of my photos are 3008 x 2000 (1.5), but many are 2592 x 1944 (1.33) (earlier photos are 2048 x 1536 (1.33)). Regardless of the original photo ratio, the slideshow takes the photo and fills the screen, squishing the height, but keeping the width.
Is there any setting which will show the photo as is, in its native ratio and leave a black band? I would prefer this, as even w/ the 1.5 ratio photos, people tend to have a squat (read fat) look that they for the most part would rather not see.
thanks for any help you can provide
john

Well OT, it seems the introduction of my new camera, the one with the 1.5 aspect ratio has cleared this up for me. Photos (landscape format) from this camera display a black band top and bottom when all boxes within the slideshow settings are unchecked, while the other cameras do not.
In any event, even set this way, the pictures appear to be shown full image, but are compressed in the vertical direction. As I said, for the images from the new camera, there is room at the top and bottom, say .75 inches each to 'normalize' the image...but they still seem as though they are compressed in the vertical direction.
Do you think this is due to the monitor ratio? If I get time this weekend, I may try to sway my son's 17" normal width monitor to see what it does.
thanks again.

  • My desktop image keeps reverting to "stretch to fill screen."

My desktop image keeps reverting to "stretch to fill screen."  I keep changing it to "fill screen" but next time I power up, it's back to "stretch to fill".  How can I get my Macbook Pro to save the settings with Mavericks?  I never had this issue before.

By default, Library folders are hidden in user accounts.  To show them, open Terminal and past in the following:
    sudo chflags nohidden /Library/ ~/Library/
Enter your password when prompted.  Then you can navigate to the folder above and delete the suggested files.  This worked for me.  It was driving me crazy that the desktop kept reverting to the Mavericks wave, as spiffy as it is.

  • How can I get AirPlay mirroring to fill widescreen? It works automatically for apps built for apple tv, but not Hulu Plus, for example, which letterboxes.

Airplay mirroring works great for apps (mostly video-related ones) with native Apple TV support, but for other apps - most notably Hulu Plus, it will only show letterbox on my 16:9 plasma TV. Again, my movies, tv shows and in-app videos like in CNN where there's a built-in AirPlay support will fill my widescreen, but apps that don't (Hulu Plus, games, photos) will not. Do I have to change the aspect ratio on the tv to 4:3? Will changing the resolution help.
How can I get mirroring to fill the entire tv screen, regardless of the app? Thanks.

Guys. Let's not get confused here.
-AirPlay mirroring feature 'mirrors' what's on your iPad 2 or above or your iPhone 4s on to your big TV via the Apple TV black box.
-Video apps that stream video (like native YouTube app) uses AirPlay which is different to mirroring.
-When you use the 'mirror' feature you get black bars all around (left/right & top/bottom)
-There are Games that use the full screen via the AirPlay mirroring feature and there are games that don't. It depends on the Game. For example download Asphalt 7:Heat and you'll notice you get widescreen display on the big TV but if you play Batman or Max Payne or others that don't support AirPlay mirroring then it you get black bars left and right.
-What's neat about the AirPlay mirror feature is that when you play Asphalt 7 with 'mirroring' set to on, the race is shown on the TV while your iPad shows something completely different (the route in real time with your rear view mirror)
-The Apple iPhoto app on your iPhone 4s or iPad 2/3 with AirPlay mirroring feature on you get a different experience. All of a sudden it goes full screen, and you are presented with their iPhoto logo.
-Those who have the first generation iPad don't have mirroring capabilities so the Asphalt 7:Heat games feature aren't available or the iPhoto app features. With iPad 1 you can only stream video or music or image slideshow (which all stream full screen). iPad 2 and iPad 3 can also do this but with the added benefit of 'mirorring' what is displayed on the iPad screen. Some apps take advantage of this, some don't.
There are no special setting on Apple TV to get rid of the black bars. You may be able to change the zoom settings on your actual big TV.
Hopefully this will clear this all up. I have the iPad 1 and recently upgraded to the new iPad 3. I also have an iPhone 4s. Same issues.
I don't think the AirPlay 'mirror' feature has developed fully yet. It has it's limitations but also has its advantages.

  • Slideshow - stretched image + low resolution

    Hi guys,
I have a wide screen that runs at 1440x900. I have my slideshows configured not to "scale image to fit screen" as my images are in 4:3 aspect and scaling it to fit the wide screen makes everyone look fat...
Viewing a quick slideshow from Finder or Preview works correctly, i.e. the photo fits in the screen's hight, with black down the sides.
When I start a slide show in iPhoto (6 and 08), it switches down to 1280x800, and seems to ignore the "scale image to fit screen" setting being set to "off" - so the images are all stretched sideways.
I suspected at first that it might be a video RAM issue, but the G4 Mini has 32MB dedicated video RAM, and the slideshow works fine (without switching to a lower resolution) in Finder and Preview.
I found one other post, posted in the iPhoto 5 section, with no responses:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5155628&#5155628
Is anyone else seeing this? Is there a way to force iPhoto to leave the resolution alone and obey my scaling wishes?
    Thanks

    koffiejunkie:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The three options I have for format are: Current display, 4:3 (iDVD, TV) and Widescreen 16:9. The 4:3 option puts black bars on either side and pins the height. The 16:9 option put black all around the image. Do either of these work for you?
Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Launch iPhoto, reset the preferences and try again.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Iphoto slideshow stretching vertical photos

ARGH! I hope someone can help me. I'm creating a slideshow for my daughter's bday and it has about 285 photos in it currently, a good mix of horizontal and vertical. There are about 20 vertical photos that are appearing stretched horizontally when viewed in slideshow mode. There are many more verticals that this is not happening to.
I edited (rotated) them in Photoshop and saved them, as I did for every vertical photo in the album. They are not rotated in iphoto. When I do rotate them in iphoto (just for troubleshooting), they are still stretched, just now rotated incorrectly.
Can anyone tell me why this is happening, especially to SOME and not ALL?
    Thanks in advance!

    Which version of iPhoto?
I've run into unexpected things when editing iPhotos w something external to iPhoto. I think the problem has to do with the way iPhoto stores photos - basically an original and then one with any changes made to it.
Try this: Put a copy of all of your Photoshop-edited photos in a folder on your hard drive outside of iPhoto. Then delete the problemmatic vertical photos from your iPhoto Library.
Then import your Photoshop edited vertical photos as if they wer enew photos.

  • Slideshow background auto-fill's with other images?

    Hi all,
I am making a slideshow in iDVD, and some of the images have background of other images... It seems to auto-fill and it looks terrible! It's sometimes on the sides and other times at the bottom, like in my example. I thought perhaps it would burn without it, but no such luck. I am using iDVD 6 also....
Any guidance would be much appreciated <3 (*see photo attached)

    Hi George
The URL prompts are coming from your Bookmarks, Cache and History files. If MacRumors appears in one or more of those files, it ought to appear in the prompts.

  • Image Slideshow Stretch to Fit Screen

Before Mavericks when you selected mulitple images in the Finder then pressed the space bar and the full screen button in the top right, you would automatically be able to play a slideshow of all the images, and this is still true in Mavericks. The difference now is that the images used to be stretched to fit the screen, now they just appear as their regular size. I would like to go back to the old way if possible.
For clarification: If you press the spacebar and the full screen button in the top right with just one image selected, that image will be streched to fit the screen. It's only when the slideshow moves to a second image that they all stop being stretched.

Is this still true if you use the Slideshow instead of Quick Look feature in the Finder? And whose idea was it to hide this option? For those who have been looking for the old Slideshow feature, select some images, click File in the FInder menu and, when the menu opens, hold the Option key. You will find the menu changes and now you can see the old Slideshow option instead of the Quick Look option.
(If you've been looking for easy access to the Library in the Go menu, that's another that has been hidden.)
BTW, anyone know how to make these appear by default?

  • My slideshows don't fill my tv screen any longer

I have PSE 9 and PRE9 and have made several slideshows in the past. I create and edit the slideshows in elements and burn them thru premiere. They all have played in my DVD player with no problems and have all filled the entire television screen. However the last slideshow I did still played in my DVD player but it doesn't fill the entire television screen, it has a black frame around the entire photo.  I don't think I changed any settings from the others, but even when I create a new slideshow using the same photos I've used in other slideshows it no longer fills the screen.  It isn't in my television because it does the same thing in other televisions I've shown them on.  All I want is my slideshows to fill the entire television screen instead of being framed in black.  I only use SONY DVDs.  I've tried changing checking and unchecking boxes for different things but nothing seems to help.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You should find better advice on aspect ratio over on the video forum. Most of us here are photographers.

  • Stretch to Fill Screen

HD timeline. Client now wants to add letter bars to the 16x9 canvas and put text in the letter bars. Problem is that the footage needs to be shrinked down in order to fit everything in. Is there a way to stretch just the right portion of the image so that it fills the screen, but doesn't distort the talking head on the left?

  • Photos stretching in iMovie widescreen project since Leopard

    Hi All
Since upgrading to OSX 10.5, when inserting photos into a DV widescreen project, iMovie 6 is stretching the photos.
It has never done this before and have not changed any settings recently.
Any ideas what to check/or a fix?
    thanks

I have the similar effect after changing to Leopard. Actually, this is pretty bad since I use Ken Burns very frequently. I can only suggest to use the "Feedback" menu in iMovie and report this problem to Apple.
The combination of iMovie and iPhoto is my biggest motivation to use a Mac. If there is no solution available soon I wil have to switch back to Tiger and hope it does not occure there (although I have never noticed it there but some reported it also there).
Additional to the stretching the colors it produces are different to the original ones and the photo appears to be a bit blurred.

  • How to set "stretch to fill" in AME CS6?

So... We have alot of footage, that is set to DV/PAL Anamorphic... In other words, a squeezed image of ppl in an 720x576 50i (aspect ratio of 1.09).
What I want to do is the following:
    - Use Adobe Media Encoder (NOT PREMIER PRO) to...
    - Set a "watch folder" to dump the footage into and...
    - Export this as 1024x576 25p (aspect ratio: square pixel)...
    - And this is supposed to "stretch to fit", thus removing the anamorphic picture...
I have tried setting the settings to this in AME, with no success as I get two black pillars left and right of the footage, with no options to actually stretch the image to fit.
Now, in PremierPro CS6 there is an option in the export that lets me do the "stretch to fit" option... Wich is all good, and works fine on that single file. But this is NOT an option when dealing with the amount of footage we have here. We're talking well over 100 shots with this setting. And going into premier and setting this for each individual sequence is just plain stupid and illogical in itself.
So where is this option in the AME CS6 software itself, or is it simply removed? I know this was there in Adobe Flash Encoder CS3, but has been missing ever since CS4... I was kinda hoping I would find it in CS6, as Adobe usually listens to people, and are a profesional toolkit used by alot of professionals, but I just cant seem to find it...
    (source: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2691915)
Any help and/or response of the constructive kind would be nice... But do not tell me to use PremierPro to do this... As this is not an option...

This is all good, and works perfectly fine when dealing with individual clips... However, when we have well over 100 clips... I REALLY would like this option for a "watch folder" that I can then dump these files into, and just let AME work it without me having to actually go in and change it to "stretch to fit" on each and every file.
Is there somewhere I can change the default setting? Or a place in the "create watch folder" dialog box where I can find this option?

  • How to make iPhoto export slideshow 16:9, 1280x720, widescreen?

I have seen previous posts (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1281810&#1281810) also requesting instructions or work arounds on iPhoto's only options for exporting slideshows:
    Small (240 x 180), Medium (320x240), Large (640x480)
I want to do a Ken Burns effect slideshow, and I have it all set up. I want to know if there is a way to edit/hack the only three options that the export dialog allows.
I know that if you go to the albums and use the advance options in the Quicktime tab, this works, sort of. Why? Becuase no animation, ken burns effect is applied. It only makes the crop, and the transition, but not the motion of the Ken Burn Effect. This would be great way to save a lot of time. I have FCP, but it will take me a lot of time to compose an animation Ken Burns style with output for 1280x720 (HD).
Any help will be appreciated. If the work around involves Quartz Composer, that's okay, just tell me the script or steps.... I really need help with this.
    Thank you,

    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

It would be great if there was an option on a .plist kind of document where you could modify this. I would hope this would be just like a pass through to QT, so there has to ba a way

  • Fit or Fill Images in Slideshow

I've actually tried both and the problem still exists.  I have a basic slideshow created with just an image and fade - no navigation, caption or anything else. I had it working just fine, but made a few adjustments and now the images don't all 'fit' properly.  If you look closely at this image, there is a dark gray border around the image area.  The one image (two people in winter) has an even border all around, but the other image is stretched, or fills the 'frame' from side to side with a small border above and below.  How do I get them to fill the same area - preferably the one with the even border all around?

I ended up deleting the slideshow and created a new one and reworked it. I had the 'hero image' (I'm still not sure what that means) a little smaller within the slideshow frame so there was a border around the image and a stroke on the outside frame to set it apart from the rest of the page.  Now I just filled the frame with image with a stroke around the image and no border.  It'll work - not what I originally intended but it will work.  And now that it is working properly I'm not going to change it!
But I do have more slideshows to add so if it happens again I'll send it in.  I don't know that it'll do any good at this point if the problem is persisting.
In fact... I have a feeling it's just me not quite understanding the Hero image and it's relation to the slideshow itself.  Is there any tutorials that get into more detail about slideshows?

  • Iphoto stretches slideshow pictures

My individual pictures in a slideshow are "stretched" to fill the background of the screen. By stretched I mean the last edge pixcels colours appear to be repeated to the side of the picture out to the edge of the screen. This creates a weird striped appearance. Is there any way to make the background black or whatever? Previous posts here refer to being able to choose formats (4:3, 16:9 etc) but I can't find these in my settings- iphoto 09. Setting to "scale photos to screen" picks up only part of each picture. I want the whole picture as in the original.

Are you creating the slideshow by selecting an album of photos and using the Play button? That gives a different setting window than the one that comes up from the slideshow mode. This is the one that comes up when using the album method:
It's the only way that you can get slides to play randomly (shuffle). Is that the one you're seeing?
Note: This is the forum for iPhoto 08 but we've both been referring to the correct version, V8.1 - iPhoto 09. We didn't get sidetracked there.

  • 640x480 to 1024x768 without stretch on Widescreen

Thought I would pass along this information. I installed XP Pro on my iMac for the purpose of playing old Mac games that no longer run on the Mac. Since the games are Windows hybrids, I can play them full speed under Windows. Ironic, isn't it?
Anyway, games such as Riven, Myst III, and Myst IV all want non-widescreen resolutions. Windows will play in 640x480 to 1024x768, but the standard drivers stretch the screen out of proportion. Ruins the gameplay. After doing some searching, I found the solution.
I have an iMac (Early 2008) with the ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro graphics. I went to ATI/AMD's website and you can download drivers for Bootcamp Windows XP. I downloaded the ATI Catalyst Control software. You need to update Windows to include .Net 2.0 Passport or later. You can do that with Windows Update by installing the .Net 3.5 combined updater. After that is done, then you can install the ATI Catalyst software.
Right click on the Desktop and you can open the Catalyst software. Click the Notebook Display Setting in the left column, and you have an option to Preserve Aspect Ratio. Check that option and click on Apply. Now when the game switches to 640x480 or other standard resolution, the aspect ratio will be preserved and the screen won't stretch to fill. Now you can play those old games in their true aspect ratio.
It is great fun playing Riven: The Sequel to Myst on DVD once again, especially since the old Mac requirements were PowerPC and Mac OS 8! The game plays great under XP Pro SP3 too. Now all my old software that no longer runs on the Mac (hybrid discs of course), can be used under Windows.
If you have an Intel Mac with graphics, such as NVidia, you should check their website to see if they offer similar software to give you more control over the resolutions. The ATI software that I refer to only applies to Intel Macs with ATI Graphics.

Shane - Its not squeezed. It just looks 4:3 in the Canvas.
I have DV-NTSC Anamorphic as my sequence. Is that correct?
Also, when I check the ANAMORPHIC box in the sequence setting it does make it fullscreen but when I drop the next clip it does not take effect.
