Slideshow using an Exported Catalog, Previews

LR V 1.1 has greatly improved the capability to move a catalog (in whole, or as a 'light' version) from one computer to another; several of the threads address this well.
One bit of behavior I've encountered is somewhat less than desirable, and I'm wondering if there is a work-around.
Here's the scenario:
1) On my desktop, Export the catalog, include Previews, but not 'negatives'
1a)Prior to this step, I created 1:1 previews
2) On my laptop, Import the catalog from step 1
3) Create a slide show on the laptop - this works great, the Previews are quite adequate.
The less desirable effect I've noticed is that as each image is displayed in the slide show, the '?' Badge is shown in the upper-right, indicating that the master image file is not found. Not surprising - it's not there.
Question - is there a way to eliminate this from the slideshow display?

  • I have a 4K monitor and want to see a full screen slideshow using the jpeg generated when I "save" a raw file in the raw converter.

I have a 4K monitor (actually a 50 inch Samsung TV).  Looking at my daily photographs on this monitor is astonishing, wonderful, etc. but there is one fly in the ointment so to speak.  With previous monitors when I selected slideshow I could get a full screen "fit or fill" slideshow that I used for grading my images.  My initial work flow all happens in Bridge and Camera Raw.  It goes like this: I download my raw files using Bridge.  In the thumbnail view I delete all the obviously bad images.  Then using Bridge I open each raw file using my preferred presets for sharping and such.  If I like the image I "Save" it to the same folder as a full sized maximum quality JPEG.
Now we get to the part that doesn't work.  At this point I usually start a full screen slideshow and rate each of the JPEGs I have saved.  What I see is a 1920 x 1080 preview image blown up to full screen size which of course looks awful.  Why can't I just view a slightly reduced JPEG image created on the fly by Bridge.  I guess I could tell Bridge to create 3840 x 2160 previews and they would display correctly, but that would be a big hit on disk space.
When I run slideshow using the 1080 pixel preview, I can click on the preview I click on the displayed image and start a full resolution slideshow of the saved JPEGs but the outer edges of the image are not viewable because the image has not been reduced to fit on the monitor screen.
Does anyone know how I can get Bridge to show a full screen slideshow using the saved JPEGs?

Sounds like a driver issue. I never tested in bridge, so I could be wrong. But it sounds to me that when you are connected to that screen, your settings are not set to the full resolution of that screen.

  • How does installation of CC Photoshop and Lightroom affect my current catalogs, previews, and caches?

I am going to subscribe to the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography Plan. How can I preserve (import?) and use my current catalogs, previews, and caches from my current installation of Lightroom? Or will I have to start over once the new version of Lightroom CC is installed?

If you are currently using Lightroom 5 then switching over to the creative cloud is really simple. There are some who say that it isn't necessary to switch to Lightroom downloaded from the creative cloud. But I did. I'm using Windows, so I used the standard uninstall process to uninstall my standalone Lightroom. Then I installed Lightroom from the creative cloud. After the installation was complete there was an icon for Lightroom (just like the previous one because it is the same program) on my desktop. I double clicked on the icon and Lightroom opened the same catalog that I had been using and everything that I had done previously was still in place. You see, the catalog and previews and all those other files are user files generated by Lightroom on your computer. But they aren't part of the Lightroom program. So removing the Lightroom program does nothing to your catalog or previews or preview cache. It's the same program precisely. It's just licensed differently.
If you have been using Lightroom 4 then Lightroom 5 will find the catalog you have been using and will prompt you to allow it to create an updated copy of it that conforms to the new database format. It's no different than upgrading the standalone version. So the short answer is that you shouldn't lose any of your work by switching over.

  • LR 1.2 Export Catalog does not export Color Labels

I've used the export catalog several times to update Meta Data on a 2nd PC while traveling, etc. then move it back to the original catalog. I thought before that my color labels were lost, but this last go-round I had a lot of pictures tagged with specific color labels - none of which made it to the exported catalog. Bug? Or did a miss a setting some place?

    Okay, here's the deal.
Colors are just convenient ways to change the "Label" metadata field, and the color label filters are just convenient ways to search on that field *using the current color label set*.
Lots of things regarding colors make more sense once you realize this.

  • Lightroom 5 is not exporting my previews in the catalog, please help!

I purchased Lightroom 5 on Wednesday and had no problem exporting my images from a catalog that included previews and smart previews. Now it is having trouble exporting my previews. I'd tried restarting lightroom, trying different folder, I made sure all images were there, and still no luck. I would appreciate any help!

To be clear: Lightroom (without a plugin) can not (or should I say will not) export "plain" (lib) previews.
That said, if there is a smart preview, you should be able to export.
Are you saying there is a smart preview, but you can't export?
What about if there is NOT a smart preview - still a problem??

  • I use lightroom 5. Have always used the general automatic backup. I want to backup my catalog to an external backup drive.  I go to file,, then export catalog and I get message that about 900 pictures will be exported. I have about 38000 pictures with key

I am out of space on my desktop. I want to export my catalog to an external drive and then work off that external drive which has more storage. I have about 38000 pix, which have keywords etc that I want to be part of this export so I can work on groups of pictures, when necessary.
When I go to files, export catalog I get a message that about 1000 pics will be in the catalog to be exported. How might I get all the pics with keywords metadata and other vital info exported?

With due respect, you appear to have a fundamental lack of knowledge on how LR works.  The "pic" files are not in the catalogs.  They are separate.
The catalog has NOTHING in it but the adjustments you've made.  There are no "pics" in it at all.  The 38,000 photos exist separately.  So Exporting your catalog to another drive will do nothing to fix the crowded "desktop".  It only would move the list of adjustment to another location.
The reason that it Exports a catalog with only 1000 "pics" is because that is what you have somehow selected.  If you want to export a catalog for all the "pics", select all of them.  But, that won't make room on your "desktop".  You need to move the "pics".
To make room on your "desktop", you need to move the "pic" files themselves, not the catalog.  To do that may require an understanding of computer file structure.  In terms of how Lightroom ties your adjustments (recorded in the catalogs) you will have to use Lightroom itself to move the files.  You do that within the Library module and, to do it right, will require an understanding of operating system standard file structures.
To keep the adjustments (recorded in the catalogs) connected with the "pics" you need to plug in the external HDD, and WITHIN LIGHTROOM, create a files structure on the external HDD you are happy with.  Then, you can copy, cut and past or drag and drop from you "desktop" to the new file structure.  If you do it within LR, your adjustments will remain intact.
It may be tempting to use your operating system programs, like Windows Explorer or the Mac equivalent to move the files, but that will fix the "desktop" space problem but you will loose all of you keywords, adjustments or whatever.
It is probably rude and impolite, but it amazes me that people trust their cherished photography to a program such as Lightroom without ever doing the homework to understand the underlying principles of operation.
Good luck!  This can be terribly confusing.

    Any idea?

    Hi Folks,
I tested this on my server and I got the same error and no XML file created. However, in the documentation there is an additional switch that identifies the logical user and when this is used the XML file should be created. There is still a warning message issued BIB-14418, however, as Katia has identified this is expected behaviour.
So the command that works for me is as follows:
    bi_export -u BIBCAT -p BIBCAT -lu BIBCAT -j thin -h localhost -po 1521 -sid mysid -x a catalog.xml
The TAR listed above has been updated by support to reflect this information as well. Hope this helps.

  • IPhoto 9.4.3 - Can't export slideshow using Quicktime Options

Hello - I just upgraded to 9.4.3.  I'm a professional photographer and I've always liked using iPhoto to create slideshows for clients.  One of the best features was the ability to customize the export of the slideshows using the Quicktime options.  Things like resolution (1080x720), frames per second, key frame rate, etc, etc.  After "upgrading" I noticed that the only option on a slideshow export is their pre-packaged sizes and no customization possible.  Am I missing something here?  If not, Apple should consider adding this feature back as the settings can make a huge difference in a pro's world.
    Thanks

That is peculiar. I am also using 9.4.3. and the "Custom" export button is there.
If a button is missing for you, that should be there, try if the button is still missing, when you open iPhoto from a different user account, see: Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the export panel looks o.k. in a different user account, your "Preferences" file may be corrupted. Then remove iPhoto's user preferences.

  • Help with very advanced slideshow using imovie?/idvd?/iphoto?

I am trying to create a more advanced slideshow for the first time, and I need some advice on how to manage my project and the order in which to use (if to use) the various applications (iphoto, idvd, imovie). I've been in all of them trying to figure out the best format to use, as each of them have certain features I'd like to incorporate into my slideshow. It gets a little confusing since this is all new and I just don't know how to approach it. If anyone has experience with all of these programs, maybe you could give me some suggestions on how to get the most out of what is available. Here is what I'd like to do:
I have a 4 minutes song from itunes which I want to use with a slide show of about 30 pics (whatever is a reasonable amount).
FX features (a sound effect at beginning before song and maybe some of the cool video affects on a few of the photos (in addition to Ken Burns )
Ken Burns zoom like an animated slideshow
Use a theme (preferably one from idvd as it seems to have more to choose from.
Since it is only one slideshow, I don't need the confusion of all the zones to import clips into, so I'd like to keep it simple. While I want to keep it simple, I'd like to have some sort of preview in the beginning with the cool stuff imovie offers like the title floating in etc..
So my problem is, I just don't know how to get all of these affects into one slide show because I'm training myself on bits ad pieces of each one, but I don't where to start (magic imovie, magic idvd, start from scratch idvd, or just slide show to import to idvd). I 've tried them all, but I can't figure a way to get more affects as each one has something different. Not sure if this makes sense, but I've trying so hard to get this right (for a Xmas gift) and I'm going in circles trying to keep it all straight. So, if this is possible, I would really appreciate help as to the best way to approach it. Thank you.

    Hi n
You have one day more for Your project than in Sweden as Santa has to start
somewhere and home is close. (We start at about 15.00 24 of dec).
I would start with - if the music is bought from iTune store (a fix for a known
problem) to save it out as an audio CD (.aiff) else it will look OK till You try
Your DVD disk = No sound.
Then I would start a new iMovie project and from media button select photos
and drop one start photo from iPhoto down into timeline. Then I would import
the music from the new CD.
Cont to put photos one at a time into timeline. Change duration so that they
match the tempo in Your movie.
    Transitions
    Effects
    etc.
Save from time to time to keep safe.
When the "movie" is done - close iMovie and open iDVD and drop Your movie
project icon into this - or - use the import function in iDVD.
DON'T Share/Export from iMovie to iDVD - it will destroy Your movie by a bad
rendering work. iDVD does this so much better.
I don't know any way to use the "themes" in iDVD into iMovie. Sorry
    Merry Christmas !!!
    Yours Bengt W

  • Feature Request: Export catalog for 2nd editor/machine

Since there isn't a shared network environment for LR, to involve multiple editors or multiple locations for the same editor on large projects, I often need to export a subset of a catalog so someone else can work on it, or I can work on it off my laptop somewhere other than the studio, using only the proxy 1:1 previews to make my decisions from and then re-assimilate those edit changes to the master catalog of that job, usually back on my primary workstation.  This process also allows me to start processing out parts of the job while other parts are being edited on other machines, or letting my primary workstation process while I use a 2nd workstation to continue editing at speed on.
I can make this happen, but it's all on me to remember which portions of the catalog have been exported, where their destination was/is, remember not to make any changes to that portion of the library while the subsection has been exported, and an over-lengthy and complicated merging of exported and internal catalogs.
It would be incredibly useful if LR could show the status (checked out for primary edit, checked out for client approval, etc.) of any exported catalog by mousing over that visibly different section and build in a preference for those varied conditions to potentially limit any changes to that subset of images while the export is still 'checked-out.'  A true merge would be nice to allow possible overlaps of work on the same images, but a managed lock-out would be sufficient to start with.
As it is, the re-assimilation process for me involves removing images from the master catalog leaving the raw files in place, and re-importing the exported catalog which also necessitates the needless redundancy of bringing the 1:1 previews back in as well.  At the scale I'm doing this it's overly time consuming, compared to the speed of just bringing in the library itself.  The process also puts me in the place of deleting images from a catalog while they're essentially still in use, which is scary from a file management standpoint, usually with me having 4 and 5 copies of that library lingering around until all the manual merging actions are finished.

That's a feature I've asked for myself Brad, in the absense of true network use.  As it's not likely to make the final release, and we wouldn't want the request to get lost in beta land, might I suggest adding it as a suggestion on the Feature Request forum http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family where it can easily be tracked?  If you post the link to your request here, others can also vote on your request.

  • LR2.1 acting odd and won't export catalog

I am trying to export several folders (one at a time) using Export As Catalog to an external hard drive. The first 4 exported just fine. Now, I can't get any of the next 4 to export. I just get the unhelpful message "Lightroom was unable to export the catalog".
I've closed LR2.1 and reopened it giving the catalog time to close down and reopen.
The "ghost" volume indicators that I had in LR2.0 have returned this morning in LR2.1. They were gone when I first installed LR2.1 several days ago.
I optimized the catalog and was able to Export one folder as catalog. The second one failed -- same error message as above.
    I'm running WIN XP SP2, 3GB RAM.

I am having the same problem--except that I can export almost no folders.
    Details:
    Lightroom 2.1
    Windows XP Pro SP3
    3 GB RAM
67 GB free disk space on disk where export was targeted.
Folders that failed ranged from 5.6 to 31.1 GB in size.
    Have already tried:
    Restarting Lightroom.
    Restarting computer.
    Synchronizing folders.
    Exporting catalog without previews.
    Exporting catalog without negatives.
I too would appreciate any suggestions.

  • LR4 Crashes after each Export Catalog

LR4 crashes each time I use the 'Export as Catalog' function.
    Has anyone else seen this?
Is there any way around it?

I'm having the same issue on a Mac. I try to export as catalog with and without previews and negatives...same result > "You're trying to quit Lightroom during a process" and freezes (which is strange, because I wasn't trying to quit). Iforce quit and reopen and I get a catalog corruption error. Luckily I have backups, but I'd like to export some photos as a catalog and can't do so.
Arkayem, did you find a fix for your issue?

  • Exporting catalog, making changes, then importing catalog does not update file movements and deletions

I export part of my master catalog to a laptop.  I include the image files so I can edit the files at full res.  After managing and editing files I import the catalog back into the master catalog. When importing I check to replace metadata, develop settings and negative files. I have been running some tests to be sure all my work is being captured in the master catalog by this process.  I find that if I change develop settings or photo ratings this is detected when the file is imported and the data in the master catalog is updated properly.  The surprise is that if I delete files or move files among folders in the exported catalog these changes are not detected and these changes are not updated inthe master catalog.  It seems bizarre to me that such changes are not detected but I do not see how to get LR to recognize these changes and include them in the catalog update.  Without this capability I don't see how to use catalogs to move part of a catalog to another computer for edits and file management and then move back to the master catalog.

There are various reasons why Lightroom works this way, but you'll need use pick flags to indicate photos to be deleted, and other metadata like colours or collections.

  • ALV report using the field catalog

which is the quickest way to generate an ALV report using the field catalog merge.  without needing to build the field catalog manually .
is it easier to create a structure and passe it in the field catalog merge .  if yes can i have an example plzzzz

    hI
Supports the creation of the field catalog for the ALV function modules
based either on a structure or table defined in the ABAP Data
    Dictionary, or a program-internal table.
The program-internal table must either be in a TOP Include or its
Include must be specified explicitly in the interface.
The variant based on a program-internal table should only be used for
rapid prototyping since the following restrictions apply:
o Performance is affected since the code of the table definition must
always be read and interpreted at runtime.
o Dictionary references are only considered if the keywords LIKE or
INCLUDE STRUCTURE (not TYPE) are used.
If the field catalog contains more than 90 fields, the first 90 fields
are output in the list by default whereas the remaining fields are only
    available in the field selection.
If the field catalog is passed with values, they are merged with the
    'automatically' found information.
Below is an example ABAP program which will populate a simple internal table(it_ekpo) with data and
display it using the basic ALV grid functionality(including column total). The example details the main
sections of coding required to implement the ALV grid functionality:

  • I have created a slideshow using i Photo. How do I burn it to disc so that I can play it on my DVD?

I have created a slideshow using i Photo.
How do I burn it to disc to play on a DVD.
    I cannot access i DVD.
    Is this the problem?
I have exported the slideshow as a movie quick time file.
    What do I do next???

If your Mac is a new one, like mine, then it comes with a version of iLife that doesn't have iDVD and if so, there isn't an easy way to burn a DVD from iPhoto or iMovie that will play on a normal DVD player.  There is quite a bit of correspondence about this, but I couldn't find a good answer, apart from this:

I ended up buying (via Amazon) a boxed version of iLife11, which has all the same software I already have, but with a copy of iDVD with it.
Seems to work well with iMovie, but at the moment, my copy of iPhoto has crashed - see:

Having only just transferred from a Windows machine to a Mac, it seems incredibly arrogant for Apple to think people don't use DVD players anymore.
