Slight Flex from under bottom cover!! Is it normal?

Hi Guys,
This is a weird issue that I have, and I wanted to run it by you guys first before I bring it up to the Apple geniuses, who seem to be trained to turn repairs down quite often I have noticed.
When I pick up my MBP Unibody (Mid 2009) with sealed-in battery, I noticed that in some cases I get a slight flex from under the bottom cover, it is very minor flex, but is the computer supposed to have any flex when you pick it up? To be more exact, I feel it under the SuperDrive when I grab the machine with one hand in that general area, it feel like a slight "creak".
Any comments and suggestions on this issue are appreciated.
Cheers,
Felix M.

I have come across some other posts in these forums regarding users noticing some flex in the bottom case.
Here's one:

It's probably wise to always pick up your computer with two hands.

  • MBP 15" - Bottom Case Slight Flexing when pressure is applied!

A few days ago, I noticed something that really shocked me!
I picked up my closed macbook pro with two hands (my left hand grabbed the logic board side and my right hand grabbed the optical disc side) and the macbook pro was held vertically (parallel to my body / hinge sticking straight up into the air). My thumb on the screen side and my four fingers and the bottom case. Get the picture???
Some how by accident (and due to the lighting in the room), I noticed that if I applied pressure with my fingers, I could cause the bottom case to flex every-so-slightly. Honestly, I think it has enough "play" that if enough pressure was applied, it would make contact with the logic board!  Is this type of flexing normal???
The bottom case is REALLY thin! I have taken mine off a few times! Dang, it is REALLY REALLY thin.  I just don't see how this is abnormal. But I wanted to check and see if this is just cause to make a trip to my local AASP?

It is a non issue, really.

  • Keys misbehave when PowerBook case is slightly flexed

Hello, here's a problem that I have noticed a few other PB users have experienced. From what I can find online, none of the various discussion postings elsewhere on this issue have been answered with a solution to the problem, so I hope I'm in the right place here.
My PowerBook works fine as long as it is sitting on a flat surface. However, when it is on my lap, something about the angle or flex of the case changes the functions of certain keys. Some examples are:
--Delete key writes 1qazs and lowers screen brightness by one bar, and hides all windows.
--Space bar rings the alert tone and activates Exposé, and sometimes turns on num lock.
--Left arrow key writes 8ik and activates Dashboard.
--Down arrow key writes 9ol. and activates Exposé.
Suggestions on other sites to reset PRAM, change keyboard, or reinstall system have not fixed the problem. There is clearly a connection between this behavior and the upward pressure of my lap in the middle of the case combined with the downward pressure on the lower edges from the weight of my wrists as I type. The keyboard itself seems to have little or nothing to do with what causes the problem.
The issue was minor about a year ago, but lately it has become so regular that I can only use my computer reliably on desks, which means my PowerBook has unfortunately become a desktop Mac, until this gets resolved.
Any ideas on what I can tinker with to resolve this?

Hi, Stony, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Arm yourself with a Torx T-8 screwdriver from your local hardware store. Release your two keyboard catches and gently flip the keyboard back onto the wrist rests, gently remove its cable connector from the logic board and then firmly reseat it. Use the Torx driver to tighten all the screws you can see inside the Powerbook. Put the keyboard back in place. Now remove the battery, disconnect the AC adapter, remove the bottom cover of the Tibook, and tighten all the screws you can see on the underside of the works. Then replace the bottom cover and all the screws that hold it in place, snugging them all down securely.
The Tibook chassis derives what stiffness it has from everything being screwed tightly onto it. When any of the screws are loose, as they commonly are after long use, the case and logic board will flex and twist more than they should during handling. Bad connections and occasionally even short circuits can result. The keyboard, PC card cage, Airport card cage, hard drive, optical drive, and other components may lose contact with the logic board in a really loosey-goosey Tibook.
Using a Tibook on your lap or any other soft surface is a bad idea, as it inhibits proper cooling and will shorten the lives of heat-prone components inside. If you must use your Tibook on your lap or on a bed, sofa, etc., always keep a stiff, flat board under it so the Tibook's rubber feet can provide airspace under the bottom panel, as they're designed to do. This is good advice for users of any modern, powerful "laptop" computer — not just Tibooks. The era when it was practical, never mind comfortable, to rest these little furnaces directly on your lap is long gone, and "laptop" has become an antiquated misnomer.

  • Pressure on bottom cover makes Macbook Pro shutdown

Have a problem I have never had before. I have a 17" 2010 MBP, never had a problem like this with any of my 4 former laptops.
Very slight pressure on the middle of the bottom where the ram compartment is, makes the computer freeze and I have to shutdown hard. After that it makes the "3 beeps at startup" to indicate bad ram.
Well, I tested the ram and it's fine, so I know that it's the pressure touching something it's not supposed to. The pins that hold the cover from touching the logic board etc. doesn't seem to do the job very well.
I have never seen this problem before, is there a fix, or do I have to change the bottom cover?
Right now I can't move my MBP when it's turned on, that will in 99 % of the cases apply just a bit amount of pressure to the bottom case, enough to make it freeze and shutdwon.
Not very portable right now ;-<

It sounds like either a connector is loose, something is shorting when you put pressure there, or maybe a bad solder connection. You should take it in to the Genius Bar for a free eval. If you're under Applecare the repair is free too.

  • Bottom cover warped by battery heat

My MacBook is just over a year old and the bottom cover is warped from the battery heat from charging (pulled away from under the front center below the mouse pad), is this covered by Apple Care extended plan (cannot get any infromation online as site is down)? Love it overall, but the bottom plastic is cheap!

    WAITTTTTTTTT! =)
I didn't realize that you were having the bad rubber bottom issue =) Apple is covering it.
I had the same issue with mine.

mac doctor store nearby wont just sell me the part, want me to pay over $100 labour to install it (8 screws removed and replaced)
Anyone know if/where i can buy a part to install myself??

The bottom cover, I mean this one which protects sim card from water, is broken. I close it every single time but it still keep opening... Not completely but it comes off a little bit. What should I do? Should I give my Xperia for the warranty?

  • C855-S5308 how to disassemble bottom cover?

    Hi,
I have this C855-S5308 laptop about 1 year. Recently, when running large game, after the first couples of minutes the game just goes very slow (the fan loud, of course) and keeps that way. Or, if I open too many tabs in a browser, the fan is loud ,and even if I close the browser the fan keeps that way forever.
Guess the problem is dust. So I learned some tutorial, then the C855 tutorial in this forum,
    tutorial c855
, but I'm confused ---I tried  removing all screws from the bottom of the laptop, but still can not remove the bottom cover - I just want to clear fan's dust, do I have to disassemble harddisk and keyboard, first?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Prior to disassembling your laptop you can actually try a couple of other items.
    1. Purchase canned air. Spray the vents and the fan area while the laptop is off. Spray only 2 to 3 sec at a time, otherwise you could damage your hardware.
    2. Laptops often get too warm and cause the fan to run high because the design is actually not that efficient for air flow. If you are a gamer and use your laptop with memory intensive games while online; you may wish to purchase a cooling plate that will actually pull hot air from your laptop providing a better cooling process.
    3. Now if you still are having issues you can disassemble the laptop to use some thermal grease. I am attaching the manual for you for your laptop with illustrations that should be helpful.
Here are some good ones to choose from: http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=gaming+cooling+pad&tag=googhydr-20&index=electronics&hvadi...Prior
    I hope this is helpful

  • Cracks near hinges and bottom cover falling off

My 2010 MacBook is cracked at the hinges and the bottom cover is warped and slowly falling off. Can I get these fixed for free?

It would be worth asking at an Apple store!
When I had a battery replaced a year or so ago, my bottom cover was improperly replaced and appeared warped.
Without batting an eye, they offered to replace it - no charge.
I thought they were just being kind but it turns out it's a common problem on MacBooks from a certain time period (circa2010), so it is Mac's POLICY to replace them without charge when they warp!
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook-bottomcase/
I have the same cracks appearing at the hinges (no bumps or drops, only a well-traveled and much used Mac!) but haven't asked about what obtaining a replacement shell would entail. If I do so before you, I'll reply again with what the terms / cost of replacement would be!
