Slight gap/bending in Macbook Pro casing?

I noticed a couple of gaps forming where the casing comes together (the plastic gray trim on the perimeter of the keyboard/wristpad area no longer touching the other half of the case where the optical drive slot lies).
I started noticing it after I got my computer back from being fixed for a fan at Genius Bar at Apple retail, although I'm not sure if that was related.
Would this be something they could fix at the store? I was still under warranty when I got it back from Apple one week ago.
Also: photos to show what I mean:

I don't know if they could fix it at the store or not, but I would think that they would be able to. It could well be related to the recent repair, and I would certainly bring it to their attention. The repair should have its own warranty, even if your Applecare has run out in the meantime. These gaps should not be there.
Good luck!

  • My ethernet cord won't stay in because of a slight dent on my macbook pro- will applecare cover this?

my macbook pro has a slight dent near the ethernet cord plug and it changed the shape of the hole so that the cord wont stay in. will applecare fix this for me?

There's a pretty narrow margin between the plug fitting in the port properly, fitting loosely, and not fitting at all (meaning the opening is too small).  Someone "might" be able to get the shape just right for you, but it'd be a fairly difficult task.  While the aluminum does bend somewhat, it isn't all "that" flexible.  It's possible that someone could break a chunk right off if they need to bend it more than just a slight amount or if they need to move it back and forth a bit to get it just right.  The problem I see is that the connector should be snapping into the "port", not the frame.  It sounds like your port itself may be damaged.

  • Electric charge on Macbook Pro casing

I just notice that when I rn my fingers across the casing on either side of the trackpad on my Macbook Pro 17" I can feel a small current passing through the casing. This only happens when the AC adapter is plugged in and charging the laptop. Anyone else notice this? I have searched the posts but could not find an explaination.

I have this issue too, only when I plug in the UAE (Dubai). We have 110V three prong adapters there, and still, it buzzes and sometimes shocks me like a mad girlfriend.
I called Apple Care, added it to my list of issues, and they're sending me a new one. Although some say it's not a problem, it most definitely is. After my MagSafe sparks, battery grows fat and computer vibrates from electric currents, there is most certainly a defect w/ my unit.
Sorry I can't help you w/ your issue. One thing to note. Once I got back to Toronto, the electrical issues stopped, but suddenly, for about a week, there was a nasty scraping sound coming from behind the keyboard. It was about 5x louder than the whine and sounded like a hockey player sprinting down the ice.

  • MacBook Pro casing

    Hi everyone,
My Macbook Pro is getting on for 3 year old now and I treat it very carefully. But recently I've been noticing that there's a flat area on the underneath of it, on the casing, that I can sort of pop in and out, like that area has grown weak almost. Its making worry because I don't know if its affecting the inside components at all, whether its making contact with any hardware when it 'pops' in. Anyone having the same issue or has any advice/reassuring comments?
    Thanks

I bit of a weak point,  but I have never heard of a problem associated with this.
Bottom case is access for changing your RAM among other things.  There are two clips you can try to make contact with.

  • MacBook Pro casing blocking slot-drive

My MacBook Pro's right corner casing (above the slot drive) was pushed down so hard that the slot drive was curved that pushing a CD inside was impossible. I was able to lift it up which gave it terrible scratch marks. The cloth that prevents dusts from going in is a bit damaged. I am able to put CD-ROM's inside but it scratches it considerably. My Slot-drive is scratch sensitive that the slightest scratches on a CD will give it a hard time reading.
I don't know how this happened and I am wondering if it's possible for me to go to the Apple store to get some repairs. I really dislike the look of the scratches and my warranty has ended. I don't know what to do. Please help.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Warped, bend, crooked Macbook Pro 15" unibody

After a couple of days with my new Macbook PRo 15" Unibody, I noticed the machine is crooked and the plastic stands underneath doesn't all touch the table, or whatever surface it sits on, at the same time.
It's off by approx. 2 millimeters - not much, but enough to make it annoying. And paying that much for a machine I would expect the hardware to be straight at the least.
So anyone experienced something similar? Do you think Apple will replace it directly?
    Flemming

    Hi Brody,
this discussion is really for another thread But no my 13" had a flickering display (the backlight dimmed slightly but constantly).
The 15" that went bad on me suddenly froze in the Finder during nothing but a TimeMachine backup. A hard reboot could not get me into the system (only got to the grey screen with the spinning cycle indicator). I couldn't even start from a CD.
So i guess it was more than just the hard drive. But I had just recently read about a lot of issues with the 7200 RPM - 500 GB drives that Apple puts in from the factory.

  • Late 2013 MacBook Pro Casing Replacement

I've a late 2013 MacBook Pro with Retina. I damaged the top casing and the display housing (chips). Where can I get them replaced?

Sorry to hear that. Apple can do it but it is going to be expensive (estimated to be around $300-$400). Another way, though not recommended, is to buy the part off eBay and have someone install it. The latter option is risky so I wouldn't do it but it is an option.
FYI, I really like their cases. Think about getting one of these once you replace the part.

  • Dented MacBook Pro Casing

I have a 15" MacBook Pro which is dented and I don't have the AppleCare Protection. What are my options if i take it to the Apple Store? The dent is located at the top of my left speaker. I dont know how it got there. And im not convinced it wasn't caused by something overheating inside the computer. any options? Can they replace the case? Pricing? Thanks. FYI. It is the latest Mac Pro. Bought in mid 2009.

Bboy23: See this thread for discussion and illustrations of the kind of damage that is easily caused by picking the MBP up one-handed at its weakest point, directly above the left speaker grille:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1780318&tstart=0
Does that resemble what you have? Such damage has nothing to do with heat; it's the result of putting excessive strain on a part of the chassis that is punched full of holes.
EDIT: Ah yes, I see now you've posted pictures. You've bent your case by picking it up improperly.

  • Cleaning MacBook Pro casing?

    Hi folks,
Any good suggestions for cleaning the body of the unibody MBP? Mine's got a bit dull in the colour, tried cleaning it figuring it was a dust build up and now it's got a slight blotted look going on. Any good ways of cleaning so it looks new again?!

Through all my different careers, I have learned it takes an oil to break down an oil. I have had this problem where no matter how clean my hands are, and using isoprophil alchohol or iKlear, it still doesnt remove the oil residue off the keyboard or alluminum unibody. So what i did was dampen a cloth with "gook off", which is an oil or sticky residue remover. This actually made it greasier, but after rubbing my Pro with Gook off and then cleaning off the Gook off with alcohol, the residue was gone! I do this every so often when the keyboard gets shiny or I see oil residue below the keyboard where my palms rest. Rub Gook off using hard pressure, then remove the gook off with alcohol or iKlear, or whatever watered down cleaner you prefer. This is the only method that has worked for me and my school that actually works, leaving my Pro and the student laptops looking brand new. I do not recomend this for the screen because I have not tried it yet and have not needed to try it on the screen. Rub hard!

  • Loose screen on Macbook Pro Retina 15"

    Hey there,
I am curious about something... and I might just being OCD over my super expensive laptop, but my screen is slightly loose on my Macbook Pro Retina 15". If I open the screen, I can slightly jiggle it on the right side, and it seems to be loose where the screen attaches to the hinge itself. I'm talking a small amount, like 1/4 - 1/2 mm in movement. Does anyone else notice this? It's completely solid at the left hinge.

If concerned, call AppleCare.  Take advantage of your warranty before you lose it.

  • MacBook Pro Health and safety issue: Potential Burn during normal use

    Hi,
I am not a complainer. I worked for Apple of 6+ years and have had a top of the line Apple Notebook since Apple created the concept of the laptop notebook.
I recently experienced a 3rd degree burn using my MacBook Pro that I think Apple needs to warn folks about:
    MacBook Pro 17"
    Machine Model: MacBookPro1,2
    CPU Type: Intel Core Duo
    Number Of Cores: 2
    CPU Speed: 2.16 GHz
    L2 Cache (shared): 2 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 667 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: MBP12.0061.B00
    Serial Number: ()
    SMC Version: 1.5f10
    Sudden Motion Sensor:
    State: Enabled
I had my laptop on my lap. I was wearing shorts. It noticed that it was warm on my leg where the left side of the MacBook Pro was touching my leg, but it didn't create a reflex pain response.
Upon completing my session, when I closed the machine and put it away, I noticed a 1 inch x .75 inch blister on my leg where it had been touching the MacBook/Pro; and it has turn out to be a significant burn.
I checked all the documentaiton that came with my MacBook Pro and there was no warning about the potential of this situation.
I recommend that Apple let owners know, perhaps through an email or a popup when they visit the Apple site. Lastly, when I encountered this issue, I wasn't running any high performance, compute bound applications. It was email. So, I have to believe that it is possible to detect wait states within the processes running and take the processors to a low power mode of operation when they are not performing actual work. Am I out in left field here?
I want Apple to be successful. I haven't heard of a similar complaint on any of the high performance PC's at work. Beyond a Health and Safety issue, this is also a reputation issue. Better to face into the storm and honestly deal with this issue.

MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.5) Potential Health and Safety Issue- 3rd degreee burn potential under normal use

Mike... I do sympathize with your situation but let me correct you:
I recently experienced a 3rd degree burn using my
    MacBook Pro
Do you know what a 3rd degree burn is? A 3rd degree burn involves the dermis, and is full thickness involving the subcutaneous tissues and fat underneath your skin layers. This is something that usually happens when man meets fire, electrocution, and chemical burns. A 3rd degree burn is not typically achieved by a simple transfer of energy by conduction, unless extreme heat for an extended period of time.
I had my laptop on my lap. I was wearing shorts. It
noticed that it was warm on my leg where the left
side of the MacBook Pro was touching my leg, but it
didn't create a reflex pain response.
Reflex pain response? Don't try to make up medical terminology. You didn't feel it much like you don't feel the sun when you get a sunburn initially... your skin slowly adjusted to the temperature, and at some point the heat increased over the threshold of which causes damage. You should have gone to the doctor if you were overly concerned.
Upon completing my session, when I closed the machine
    and put it away, I noticed a 1 inch x .75 inch
blister on my leg where it had been touching the
MacBook/Pro; and it has turn out to be a significant
    burn.
You're right, if you have a 1inch by almost 1 inch heat related blister on your leg, it is bad, nothing that I would consider significant. That is less then 1% of your body, probably about 0.25% to 0.5%, and only a 2nd degree burn. Your most significant complication would be a local skin infection.
I checked all the documentaiton that came with my
MacBook Pro and there was no warning about the
    potential of this situation.
Actually... I'd hate to call you a liar, but I'm pretty sure that it does warn about burns.
To confirm this, apple has also information online:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=30612
I recommend that Apple let owners know, perhaps
through an email or a popup when they visit the Apple
    site.
    They do... link above.
Lastly, when I encountered this issue, I wasn't
running any high performance, compute bound
applications. It was email. So, I have to believe
that it is possible to detect wait states within the
processes running and take the processors to a low
power mode of operation when they are not performing
actual work. Am I out in left field here?
No, you're definitely not. Here's where I start to agree with you. For the computer to heat up that much, when not doing things like rendering video is abnormal, and you deserve to have apple check out your computer. I think you should contact them on this concern.
I want Apple to be successful. I haven't heard of a
similar complaint on any of the high performance PC's
at work. Beyond a Health and Safety issue, this is
also a reputation issue. Better to face into the
storm and honestly deal with this issue.
It's harder for other manufacturers... our computers are aluminum, designed to disperse the heat. Technically they are considered "portables" not laptops, but I don't get into that argument because I disagree with the word "portable"... it's meant to work on your lap, and if you can't comfortably using regular apps, you deserve an answer.
A slightly crisp, but loyal, MacBook Pro user.
Hey, at least you're taking it with some humor. It's a shame you had to get hurt as a result of your computer. If I were you I would have gone to your Primary Care Physician, documented the burn, and returned your computer for a new one, and for something say, a free iPod for your pain.
Sorry you got hurt, I think you should have your heat issue professionally investigated through apple care

  • Picture Slide Show - Macbook Pro with retina display

Is the Macbook Pro with retina display capable of doing picture slide shows with music, or do I have to purchase additional software?

The only benefit that the Retina has over the standard MacBook Pro is the display.  It is slightly thinner (and lighter), but with the 13" model, the difference is fairly minimal.  If you're comfortable carrying the Retina, you'd be fine carrying the MB Pro as well.  Also, for all intents and purposes, while the display on the standard MB Pro is not a Retina display, it is still one of the best displays on the market and will easily provide a better image quality than most displays in similarly classed laptops.  Another thing to consider is that both the 13" Retina and standard MBP have only an integrated HD4000 GPU.  This is a fairly low power graphics processor built into the CPU.  It can easily run the display on the standard MB Pro, but it can sometimes struggle with the Retina as there are several times more pixels to drive.
    So...
13" MacBook Pro Retina:  Fantastic display, slightly thinner/lighter
13" MacBook Pro: Not at the same level as the Retina, but still an excellent display.  Slightly thicker, but as you said, you get an optical drive as well.  Memory and storage are easily upgradable.  As Kappy mentioned, the get a faster processor as well.

  • Macbook Pro Running in excess of 92 C (~196 F)

What is normal temp for macbook pro under 100% load? Recently I have been running Gaussian 09 and the temp has constantly been exceeding 196 F for extended periods of time. A typical calculation takes between 3 hrs and 2 days. Any tips to cool? It is sitting on a stand that is well ventilated and even has an additional fan next to the laptop to help circulate hot air from the back of the laptop.

Due to the process you are running, that may simply be the appropriate temperature.
I recommend a laptop cooling pad, which puts an air gap underneath your MacBook Pro and has fans to circulate that air:

  • MacBook Pro - not liking new ssd

    Hello,
I am having a slight problem with my Macbook Pro 13" Early 2011
My old ssd corrupted, used as a primary disk with 500gb storage (Samsung 840 500gb)
So I decided it was time for an upgrade anyway and ordered a Samsung 500gb 840EVO as after using Samsung's SSDs throughtout my household and only this time have I had an issue (this is much better than OCZ and other companies)
I managed to recover the files on my 840, and put them on my spare backup drive, and I can run from there like a dream.
However with my new ssd, whenever it is in the main HDD slot I cannot boot from it, and when I run it through where the disk drive used to be, I get the same issue (I cannot take my mac back to apple due to having the disk drive removed), however if I connect my new ssd via usb I can boot it up perfectly (I am writting this via it) but this is not very practical for day to day use, does anyone know how I could fix this so I can connect my ssd inside my mac (either in the main drive or via where the disk drive is (I dont mind!))
    Thanks in advance,
