Slight water spillage on wireless keyboard

A couple of weeks ago I spilt a little water on my apple wireless keyboard.
I quickly removed the batteries and placed it upside-down for 3 days to dry it out.
Then, I put in new batteries and turned it on. All the keys were working fine.
The problem was that it kept connecting and disconnecting from the computer, and continues to do so.
The light comes on and goes off and on again with each re-connection.
Is this the end for my keyboard?
Does anyone know if it's fixable?
Thanks, x

If the water got inside far enough it isn't dried out all the way yet or the water has damaged some of the electronics inside it.
Why not buy another keyboard that you know works correctly. Wireless or a Wired, USB, style.

  • Keyboard keys typing themselves after water spillage

    Hello,
I spilled water on my wireless mac keyboard.  I have left it upside down to air dry for a few days but when I put the batteries in and start it up the keyboard keeps typing itself and won't let me do anything.  Can I do anything to save the keyboard?
    Thank you
    kiera

I have been letting it dry longer as suggested perhaps not long enough yet, I tried it and it has stopped typing by itself.  The middle row of keys and the space bar is working but nothing else.  Are the rest likely to come back or is it done for?

  • Mapping problem with Wireless Keyboard and Japanese iPhone

    Hi everyone:
This seems to be a slightly obscure question -- at least, I can't find a ready answer for it with the search terms I've tried, possibly because most people don't use this particular accessory with the iPhone.
I have an iPhone 4 that I bought from and use on Softbank, the carrier in Japan, where I live.  While visiting the United States recently, I bought an Apple Wireless Keyboard from an Apple retailer.   I wanted to carry it with me for use with my iPhone, so I would reliably have a convenient way to access the Internet without being confined to the touchscreen keyboard.  (I live in a rural area where WiFi spots are uncommon, but my iPhone's access to Softbank's data network is fairly good and consistent.)
However, to my frustration, I can't use the keyboard due to a mapping problem.  The Bluetooth connection is fine -- the iPhone can discover the keyboard.  However, the mapping is off: typing "Q" gets me "A," typing "Z" gets me "W", numbers and punctuation are off, etc.  The key point: This is NOT a problem with the International Keyboard settings (under the Settings -> General -> Keyboard -> International Keyboards menu).  I have the Keyboard setting set to QWERTY, which is the layout of the Apple keyboard; I have tried all the other possibilities, just in case.  None of them work.  Setting the Keyboard setting to QWERTY does not make the external QWERTY keyboard map correctly.
The rather ironic addendum is this: While on a recent trip to Tokyo, I visited the Apple store in Shibuya and, after concluding the main business of my visit (discussing my MacBook's battery problems with an English-speaking staffer), I took out my iPhone and keyboard and asked him about my mapping problem.  He started with the Keyboard menu, tried the same things I had tried, realized they weren't working, and puzzled over the problem for a while.  Then he did this: He hit a key combination (I believe) that brought up a menu on the iPhone's screen.  "Ah, there's your problem," he said, and selected a new setting.  The problem was instantly fixed.
To my chagrin, however, I neglected to write down what "Ken" had done to fix the problem.  Argh... I was looking at the iPhone upside-down; I'd already taken up more than half an hour; people were waiting, and I guess, being used to living in the countryside now, that I'm not used to Shibuya crowds any more.  Anyway, I didn't take careful notes or ask him to walk me through it, and now I cannot recall or repeat what he did.  And I still can't use my keyboard!
Any ideas or advice, anyone?  How did "Ken" fix my problem, and how can I repeat it?  Much, much appreciated, in advance.

THAT'S IT.  Sir, you have solved my problem.  Thank you!!
And I feel a little silly; this will doubtless seem to an expert as if it should have been obvious all along.  But isn't that always the way in hindsight?
Here's what happened: The key combination I was trying to remember was "Apple/command + space on the hardware keyboard," as you just said above.  The "menu" it brings up is, apparently, a list of keyboards.  I take it that this list is the same as the list of the "virtual" keyboards on the iPhone?  I have never had more than one external keyboard -- the Apple Wireless -- but I do have several keyboards active virtually, as the iPhone in Japan seems to come with both the "Nihongo Ten-key" and the "Nihongo Romaji" keyboards active, and I added several other languages as well.
When I hit "Apple/command + space," this list comes up on the iPhone's touchscreen.  Highlighted and checked at the top is "English," just as if it had been selected all along.  But nonetheless, when I first turn on and pair my keyboard with the iPhone, I need to perform this key-combination action, as if to "reselect" English, and then the keyboard promptly starts working properly as QWERTY.  I can only assume that one of the others had been default-selected before -- presumably one of the Nihongo ones? -- and that this was causing the interference.
Thank you again!  You have made me and my wireless keyboard very happy.

  • My apple wireless keyboard got wet a year ago i sprayed the cleaning spray on it some of the keys are working but some of the keys aren"t working. it got sprayed a year ago What should i do??? Can it be recovered plz tell?

I sprayed it a year ago i really like the keyboard and i really need it can it be recovered??? My apple wireless keyboard got wet a year ago i sprayed the cleaning spray on it some of the keys are working but some of the keys aren"t working. it got sprayed a year ago What should i do??? Can it be recovered plz tell?

There is almost no chance it can be recovered, except at a cost far greater than a new keyboard.  Once wet, spraying with a cleaner will not do any good and most likely will make the situation worse.
Best thing at this point is go to your Apple store, or the on-line store, and buy a new keyboard.  Water damage is not covered by the warranty or AppleCare.

  • HT201178 I have a Mac mini with Magic Trackpad and wireless keyboard. The keyboard and track pad got wet so I have purchased new ones. Problem is how do I get past the log in screen to set up the pairing of the devices? The old ones do not work

How do I get past the login screen to pair my new wireless keyboard and trackpad when the old ones are water damaged and don't work

Have you tried pulling the batteries out of the damaged ones so that they are completely off; then shutdown your Mac Mini via the power button on the back right. Turn on your new keyboard and trackpad then power your Mini back up? The auto detection should find your new keyboard and trackpad.

  • Magic Mouse connects to new MacBkPro but not older wireless keyboard

Exactly as my subject states, I bought a brand new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6 and a new Magic Mouse. Mouse links up just fine through Bluetooth but for the life of me, can't get my new computer to recognize my slightly older wireless keyboard (it's abt 1.5 yrs old).
Do I need a more up-to-date keyboard? Something ka-flooey here? Any suggestions? Thanks so much.

Problem: My wife's Macbook (Intel Core Duo) is able to connect to my new Time Capsule, but it quickly loses its connection. It doesn't really disconnect though - it still says that it is connected with full reception, but there is no internet, or time machine, and I can't even ping the router.
    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
When that happens, if you open the Network panel of System Preferences, select the AirPort connection item on the left, click the "Advanced" button, then the "TCP/IP" tab, do you see reasonable values for the several fields?
It might help to reset the connection settings on your Mac using these steps one at a time until it works again:
    1) Use the AirPort menu bar item to turn AirPort off, then on again.
    2) In the Network panel of System Preferences delete the AirPort item from the left column, then add it back.
    3) In the same panel as (2), define a new location and see if you can make that work.
    4) In the same panel, select the AirPort connection item, click the "Advanced" button, select the "TCP/IP" tab, then click "Renew DHCP Lease".
    5) In the folder /Library/Preferences ( not <yourhomefolder>/Library/Preferences), move the folder SystemConfiguration onto the Desktop, then restart your computer. See if you can now make your AirPort connection work.
They may not help, but they'll only take a couple of minutes to try. Before you try these, note all your network settings, because the latter steps will destroy them.

  • Unpair wireless keyboard when old mac is gone

I had to exchange my old mac mini.  How do I unpair my wireless keyboard and magic trackpad without the original MacMini?  Thanks

I figured it out.  Sorry for the amateur question.  I just switched from PC to Mac and feel like a fish out of water.  Thanks.

  • Wireless keyboard battery broken inside: how to remove?

The AA battery of my wireless aluminium keyboard (iMac) have broke inside, it may have melt of something, it is glued, it does not move out. Any tip, any product or tool to force-remove it? Or is my keyboard dead?

It doesn't surprise me at all that there is no reply to this. This problem is the result of a rare product design blunder by Apple - and they never admit to those, much less remedy them. The battery compartment on the wireless keyboard is horribly designed. Making it a little tube like that with no other access point basically kills a keyboard whenever a 50 cent alkaline battery fails and leaks - and that happens all the time. If you search online, you'll see this problem mentioned multiple times. People suggest using a little bit of water, a screwdriver, some baking soda, and other methods to get the battery free...you'll note that nobody suggests contacting Apple or an Apple Store, because neither of them will do a thing about it.

  • Wireless keyboard w/ number pad

Is anyone using an original Apple Wireless keyboard (circa 2005) on a newer mac?  I cannot get mine to work with my 2008 Macbook or 2010 iMac...

I recall an iPhone app that lets you use said iPhone as a number pad.
You can make a script that applies a style, and then assign any keyboard shortcut you want to that script.
I did that for a while, but eventually just started using Quick Apply. I started naming my styles in such a way as to keep ID functions out of the Quick Apply list - starting style names with varying numbers of apostrophes or right square brackets or whatever keys are handy and unused and right next to the Enter key. It wound up being rather faster than the numpad shortcuts for documents with large numbers of styles, after a few long nights of slightly frustrating re-education.

  • Key on wireless keyboard not working

I've noticed that if I use Pages or MS Word for Mac, my Apple Wireless Keyboard no longer allows me to use the apostrophe/quotes key.  Very strange.  Initially I thought the keyboard might be faulty, but noticed at the bottom of MS Word there is a "Spelling and Grammar" box which dynamically updates to show progress with an input device (like the keyboard).  I get very clear feedback from this that tapping the key is noted by the computer...yet no apostrophe or quotes show on the page.
Similary, when I tap the key using Pages, the cursor jiggles slightly, but no letter is shown.  More confusing is that when I tap the apostrophe in Safari (as I did in entering the word "I've" at the start of this note) the apostrophe/quotes key works.
Any suggestion on how to fix?  As you can imagine, trying to type a document without these is challenging.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Just found the problem:  have been using the font "Garamond" which, in this incarnation (and bizarrely) doesn't have the apostrophe or quotation mark in it. Changing to another font fixed this.

  • My Apple wireless keyboard got wet.

I got sick and had to use an inhaler....:O
apparently I get very shaky using that thing, and as lucky would have it,
I was carrying a glass of orange juice and it slipped out of my hand, onto my desk and onto my wireless keyboard.
I quickly removed the batteries from the keyboard and dried it with a towel, not hard, just enough to get it dry. I held it upside down while doing this.
I left it for 2 nights, upside down, packed in a bag of white rice. (I heard that white rice absorbs fluid real well and thought it was worth a try).
Tonite, I put the batteries in my keyboard, and it connected to my iMAC..but it was on and off.
Also, it no longer types correctly.
For example, the A key produces a bunch of random letters and numbers, just by typing the letter A.
I'm sure my applecare warranty would not cover this issue. (I have a 3 year applecare on the imac/keyboard/mouse.
Like I said above, I admit it. It is my fault.
I'm just curious if there is a way to fix this keyboard, has anyone ever had this problem with orange juice, did your keyboard ever work again, or...
shall I just purchase a new one and keep ALL fluids AWAY from the keyboard.
    I feel like an IDIOT.
    thanks.

    Barry!!!
I agree..it's a goner...I'll use it as a wall hanging, it's so contemporary and stylish....
As for homeowners ins...HA! THAT COULD WORK..BUT my luck, they would still find the residue of orange juice.....and then...I'd be screwed..
good idea if it was plain water, though...;P
I purchased a new keyboard today from Bestbuy...(same exact one...) and I will keep the OJ one in the rice...and check in every couple of weeks. if it somehow decides to work again, I will update this thread:)
Have a good one and thank you.

  • I gave my Apple Wireless Keyboard a cleaning

I gave my Apple Wireless Keyboard a cleaning using a damp cloth and dishwashing soap. None of the keys have worked since. Although I was careful, some water may have gotten under one or two other keys. But none of the keys work, and when they do, they do so erratically. Is there any hope?

    Hello:
Let it dry out thoroughly.  It is possible that whatever you spilled into the device will evaporate.

  • Handcream - Miscoloring on Wireless Keyboard/Magic Mouse?

    Hi folks,
this question might sound a bit peculiar but I've tried to be as specific as possible:
I suffer from eczema and regulary need to apply cream on my hands - somewhere between 15-20 times a day. I use my MBP on and off the whole day and sometimes the whole evening as well. A few weeks ago I started working using the Wireless Keyboard (latest model) and the Magic Mouse.
When applying the cream I wait a few minutes untill the skin has absorbed most of it, but it is nearly impossible to work without some "leftovers". (Don't know the wright word for it).
So I'm wondering if the cream could have a damaging effect on the WK and the MM? Or maybe some miscoloring?
(I've used these products for a few weeks now and there is no miscoloring so far. Neither has the MBP been miscolored and I've used it since spring 2007. The only cleaning products I've used for the MBP is a cloth and plain water (The tapwater where I live has low levels of chalck in it - I think the term is soft water).
But since the WK and MM are made of different materials they might react differently?
Im sure there are others worrying about something similar. So; are there any dermatologists/doctors/scientists in here?
Im not looking for alternative solutions like wearing gloves, switching to a proven "safe" cream, etc.
Here is a list of what the cream contains:
    Aqua
    Tridecyl Stearate
    Neopentyl Glycol Dicaprylate//Dicaprate
    Carbamid
    Ethylhexyl palmitate
    Tridecyl Trimellitate
    Ceteareth-20
    Cetyl Alcohol
    Stearyl alcohol
    Butyrospermum Parkii Butter
    BHT
    Retinyl palmitate
    Cholecalciferol
    Phenoxyethanol
    Caprylyl alcohol
    Imidazolidinyl urea.
    Puh...
Let's see if anyone can crack this;)
    Thanks in advance!

    Hello:
Go to system preferences>bluetooth>advanced.  Be sure "allow Bluetooth devices to wake the computer" is checked.
I would also reset the PRAM and SMC.

  • Wireless keyboard is sticking

The letters can be depressed but some stick and some require more pressure. Is there a way to fix/clean it? I know I have read that you can stick a keyboard in the dishwasher but I don't this this is advisable with the Apple wireless keyboard.

If you've spilled something into the keyboard which is the cause of the sticky keys, then your chances for a successful long term repair are limited. If you spilled a couple of drops of soda or other liquid with sugar in it then you can usually wipe it up with a damp cloth. If it was more than a couple of drops and they worked their way below the keycaps then you will have great difficulty in removing the spilled liquid. If you let it dry in place you will always have sticky/non-functional keys even if you spend hours carefully removing keycaps while trying to use q-tips to locate and wipe up all evidence of the spill. Unfortunately you can't clean the membrane surface where the actual keyswitch contacts are without destroying the keyboard (assuming you have the same aluminum model as I have).
I've read the same comments from others claiming that a trip through the dishwasher will resolve the issue, however I have trouble believing that it could work without leaving all sorts of mineral deposits and corrosion behind as the water evaporates. I certainly wouldn't try it with my keyboard.
