Slightly bent frame on T61, causes many creaks and flexes

After using my Thinkpad T61 for about 2 months, I just knew there was something that didn't feel quite right about the build quality. The palmrest showed a noticeable amount of flex, and one of the rubber feet was elevated 1-2mm off any flat surface (only the center part would touch the table). This basically meant that the frame wasn't completely straight on my Thinkpad.
I compared my Thinkpad to 2 from my friends; one is a 14.1" just like mine (but integrated graphics) and shows absolutely no flex in the classis. The other, a 15.4" T61, showed a very slight bit, but much less than mine.
What will Lenovo do to fix the bad build on my T61?  I am in college right now, so it would be inconvenient unless Lenovo could cross-ship me a new unit. However, the bad build quality on mine really annoys me, especially with the Thinkpads' reputation for great chassis quality.  The entire right side of my laptop literally moves up and down about 3-4mm if pressed on, even lightly.
Also, would Lenovo let me keep my HDD? That way, I could just pop it into the replacement without having to worry about backing up work or re-installing Windows all over again.
P.S. The headphone jack on mine apparently seems to be a little faulty also; I have to orient my headphones at a very precise angle, or I hear a lot of hissing in the background.
Thanks in advance
Here is a picture of the "bent" right side; notice that the rubber feet don't make full contact with the table.  I've tried this on many flat surfaces and it creaks and flexes whenever I put my right hand on the palmrest.
Picture of right side; notice the elevation (Picture was taken from below so in reality it is WORSE ...
Picture of left side; notice it makes full contact with table

Hello,
yes, the T61 have got some flex at the right side above the hdd.
R models are heavier but have little flex, the T model are made out of very light
and carbon enhanced plastic materials. You can try to put a piece of thick paper under the palm rest.
The chassis and audio problem have to be repaired and I would suggest to send it to depot.
Please mention your palmrest flex also.
You can dismount your hdd to keep it at home. It´s a CRU (customer replaceble unit).

  • Bent frame caused by swollen battery?

    Hi,
Wanted to know your opinion about two issues I've got with my 1 month old iPhone 5:
    1.
The iPhone which was in a hard-case from day one - magically developed a bent on the left frame side.
Yep, a well keeped device that never suffered any damage (never fell, no one sit on it).
Since this bent is only on the left side (the right side is perfectly straight) - It might be a swollen battery.
But hey, its a great thing that the battery is non-replaceable so I have no idea to tell right?
Apperantly, my warranty voided, it doesn't matter if its the battery's fault or mine.
    2.
I live in Israel, so iPhone are being officially sold through the local carriers.
But guess what, they're only selling phones and providing warranty replacements.
If your phone is borken - they won't fix it.
Apperantly Apple has no repairing service for iPhones in Israel (they're only selling the devices).
Apple representative basically told me that I have nothing to do with the phone - so my only alternative is 3rd party labs.
Yep, that's Apple official policy. They're only selling iPhones through resellers, They're not providing repair services.
Your iPhone got broken? Well, buy a new one because no one will fix it.
Maybe someone here have an advice what to do?

Support for the iPhone in Israel is provided by the authorized cell carriers. See:
    http://www.apple.com/il/support/iphone/contact/
I don't read Hebrew, but all four have what appear to be iPhone support pages on their web sites. If you purchased your iPhone from one of those four carriers and that carrier refuses to provide service, try calling Apple Support Israel at (44) 0844 209 0611 and ask for assistance in getting your problem resolved. You may have difficulty convincing anyone that a bent frame is not due to user damage, but you can talk to them and see what if anything you can work out.
Note that no service provider repairs existing iPhones; Apple's policy is to replace the iPhone entirely.
    Regards.

  • Will apple replace my slightly bent iphone 6?

I bought my iphone 6 about 1 month ago, and recently i notice it is a little bent.
Its not a big issue and the phone still works it just looks really weird and im worried it might get worse.
I didn't put the phone in my back pocket at all or try to bend it in any way so im pretty sure its not my fault.
If i take this to apple will they replace/fix my phone for free?

Mine has a slight bend as well and I have honestly absolutely no idea how it happened.  Never ever had any sort of damage to a phone, iPod, iPad in the past as I OCD in looking after my stuff.   Was disappointed at the response I got from Apple Genius and subsequently the Apple store manager.  They said that Apple policy is NOT to replace ANY iPhone 6 or 6 Plus with any sort of bend in it,.  I was told to write to Apple in Ireland if I was still not happy.  That was a complete waste of time as they eventually replied saying that my issue was a Technical Support one and that they did not provide technical support through written correspondence.  My Letter clearly stated that I had been through the technical support route and that they had told me to contact Apple directly.  All in all very disappointed.
As far as I am concerned the iPhone six plus has some sort of flaw that means in certain conditions it is susceptible to bending.  They said it would have taken considerable force to bend an iPhone and my reply is if that is the case then surely I would be well aware of it happening.
I love Apple products though my recent iPhones and iMacs have not been as reliable as my previous products.  I take great care of them and having spent many thousands of pound every year on Apple products I am very disappointed with the lack of support on this issue.
I anybody does know anyone who has had a bent iPhone 6 replaced then I would be very interested to know about it.   Apple did say one of the places I was to seek help was on this forum.
Must say that, apart from the bend, I have had no other issues with my iPhone, and loving the camera especially.
    Many thanks   Iain

  • Bent frame

Finally 1.83 has arrived. Compare to my old 1.5Ghz Albook, this one is beautiful and superb in every aspect! It's so nice and much better than I'd expect or even hoped!
...only, when I opened the lid, I immediately found part of aluminum casing (narrow part between screen and display) is bent... It doesn't seem to be a problem for operation, but the plate is just making a small mountain at about F9 key...
Can this be replaced at local Apple store? I mean, maybe in a few weeks, many Apple stores will have MBS (I locate NYC by the way), and I want to minimise the hussle of replacing (well, if they'll replace!). So, if I can just bring this machine to an Apple store and be replaced with another one. I got this via Apple online store.
I can possibly live with this tho... so if there's a relatively safe way to straighten the bent part, I may try it myself and avoid all the hussle of replecing at all...
Other than that, it's just gorgeous. There is the hum noise but it's very very very small and not annoying at all. Speaker does distort at the max volume but I think they sound not bad. Yes, they are laptop speakers but actually, I even think the sound is improved; at least they are much better than my old 1.5Ghz. One thing, I wasn't too impressed by the quality of iSight picture but maybe I need more light source get a better image. Speed is enough with stock 512MB so far (not doing anything heavy yet)

It is best to immediately contact Apple when you notice an imperfection right out of the box.
Apple makes it their policy not to repair cosmetic defects. Even those that the machine came with. In my conversations and dealings with them, they are more likely to indicate that you may have damaged it.
So, I would have called them the very minute I opened the box to complain about the defect. This is the only way you could prove to them that you may not have done it yourself.
If the delivery time is only a matter of minutes before your call, then the odds of you having broken it in that time are less likely.
But, if you wait a day or two to notify them of the problem, then they'll be more inclined to insist that you may have broken it.
I've only gotten them to fix one cosmetic problem (on new hardware). That one repair was made because I had called within the hour of my machine arriving. I insisted that they document the damage, and eventually got it repaired.
The local dealer said that Apple would not repair it (I had it to the dealer within an hour after my call to Apple for another problem).
But, after the dealer fixed the operational problem, he did eventually agree to order the replacement face-plate (front bezel on an iMac G5) since I had already gotten Apple to say they would.
So, when it comes to things that could be your word against their speculation, calling in immediately is always best.
If you have already had the machine for a day, you may already be on your own there. But, I would call right now (this minute), and check anyway. The sooner you call the better.
And, do not attempt a self-repair. If you modify the damage, it will be far more difficult to convince them that the damage was already there. For example, if it bends-up now, and you press down on it, you may get a "wave" that indicates tampering instead of manufacturer defect.
An additional consideration is your warranty. Apple has many times denied warranty repair to others (citing user damage from a drop as a suspected reason for failure). So, any dents or dings you allow to be present on the machine may later void your warranty if the tech thinks it may have been dropped.
I had a keyboard that cracked on it's own, and the Apple person insisted that I would have had to drop it for that to happen. But, the keyboard had always been tied to my desk with a very short amount of loose cable. So, it would be impossible for it to fall (since it couldn't move more than 2 inches). So, after some arguing, they agreed to let me take it to a dealer for visual inspection.
They told me that the dealer would have to rule on whether it was a user caused break or a failure in the plastic. I asked them how he would be able to determine such a thing, and he said he did not know. He just said that the dealer would have to decide what he thought. So, it leaves you in the hands of the persons best guess, and if they think it more likely you broke it or not.
Fortunately, this dealer has been to my house and seen how everything is kept (during on-site repairs). Otherwise, it would be unlikely to convince them that it really did just break on it's own. Sometimes things happen that really are not our fault.
Anyway, I hope this helps. Best of luck to you.

  • A seeming small change by Verizon causes major monetary and unrecoverable damages

A seeming small change by Verizon causes major monetary and unrecoverable damages
Back, I think in March or so, Verizon changed how they bill. Prior to this time frame my elderly mom paid the phone bill and I paid the DSL bill. The DSL bill came on my name and I paid by credit card and the phone bill came under her name and she paid by direct debit. She will not use a computer.
So, they make both bills on her name and won't change it. They did, however, allow the payment from my credit card.
The first unfortunate consequence was the internet speed suddenly dropped in speed by a factor of 2 to 1.5/364 and it did take me probably a month to notice it. NO ONE that I called was able to find the problem. It took multiple attempts until some bright “call in technician” said the problem is on their end and could be fixed in software. Thus, I believe, because of the name change, the provision changed too. The phone line crapped out too at this time.
The troubleshooting was stupid too. I took another modem and connected it directly to the NID and directly to the laptop and the technician on the phone said, it's either in your house or your modem and wanted to send me a new modem which they did. I don' get it. This is the wrong conclusion.
This shows the need of modems like Westell 2200 and the Westell 6100 because of the ability to measure line statistics and provisioned data rates.
Verizon sent me a D-link model DSL-2750B modem which I have to return because its just plain old stupid. It boasts Wireless n and the wired ports are 10/100. What's up with that? Next, there are no line stats and a horrible interface, akin to Verizon's website. Still can't figure out how to put it in Bridge mode. I own a D-link repeater and the interface is fine.
I asked them what modem they would send me and they would not tell me, so I got whatever piece of junk they had lying around.
I have now purchased a Network RAID array with no wireless access and with ~400 mb/s access rates. Yep, really stupid router.
Because of the number of outages, I have to be able to quickly switch from a bridge connected modem, Westel 6100) to one that is connected in direct mode, a Westell 2200 It's almost easy, but not quite, since the equipment is up in the rafters in the laundry room. The DSL cable is commercial terminated CAT5, which is rare. The modem is within 6' of the NID.
Plans include, the ability to switch the DSL line with a switch with positions for Modem #1 (Bridge), Modem #2(Wired), #3(RJ11 – Normal wiring) and #4: RJ-11 (Reverse wiring) and moving the direct connect jack for easy access. In any event, testing with the DSL modem at the NID is the gold standard.
In progress, is a 48 port Gigabit patch panel for phone and Ethernet, A separate 24 port RED patch panel will be bridged for phone.
I have already upgraded my network infrastructure to include a UPS for the network infrastructure and POE (Power over Ethernet) for the DSL modem. The UPS backup does not backup a repeater although it may in the future.
Now, let's go back to this seeming innocuous billing change.
So, this constant having to access the modem in the alternate configuration and a medical condition (migraines) that makes it hard to think clearly. So, in one of these episodes, I placed my laptop on top a container that was soaking laundry.
So, the LCD screen has to be replaced at $300 and the battery had to be replaced. Then the Ethernet cord to the modem got pulled and caused the laptop to fall on the floor. It worked for a few weeks and then suffered an UNRECOVERABE hard drive crash.
During this time frame, in fact over a 2 day period. My mom ended up in the hospital and to a rehab facility. My car ended up staying in the shop for a few days because of parts unavailability. My hard drive crashed and their was water in the basement. I don't have time for this.
Recovery would have cost $2004.00, if it were possible. I only have a drive image from 2011 which I have yet to try to use. I' now running UBUNTU Live rather than Windows 7 Pro. Some of the very important stuff was backed up on Flash, but a lot of stuff is gone forever.
Plans are to contact the billing office and the attorney general's office in the state where billing questions need to be resolved.
The last outage, fixed on July 27, was flagged as a phone outage by Verizon, when 18 routers supposedly died. 18 routers suspiciously means that they they were not adequately protected against surges. Verizon should look at the way DelMarVa Power reports outages: see: Delmarva,  Put the usual World Wide Web Prefix and the COMercial domain suffix
For god's sake, quit making the website circular. I though Yahoo was the expert in that. I never visit Verizon's website unless there are problems. I mistaking thought I could find outage information, say using my phone's browser. This time I had to purchase service from CLEAR internet to ride me through this fix.
I know, you can't fix stupid and you can always find a better idiot. Comcast is looking more attractive.
Compensation of or my loss I will probably never get, but maybe with the help of the attorney general I can get the billing fixed. I do have power of attorney. Now, of course, the name the Verizon Website addresses me as is not right on this forum.
All, basically because of Verizon's unreliable network, incompetent people and the lack of maintenance of copper lines. The problem is, “We have little choice”. Currently, we need traditional land-line service to support an Emergency Response system. It's unclear whether digital phone lines support Faxes and alarm monitoring reliably.
I'll bet that there is NO WAY to tell Verizon if a service address as special needs like Emergency Medical reporting via phone or Internet, so that priorities for repair can be done properly. Utilities have that capability. Those ares with people with oxygen generators or other medical equipment get a higher priority,

That should not be happening.  I sympathize with both of you (you and the the person who strated this thread).  That sounds like the reason I would never want Dish.
I am fortunate that my service with Verizon Fios has been very reliable and that I haven't had too many issues over the years.  But don't get me started on Verizon Wireless.  I am through with doing any more business with them once my cell phone minutes run out.  I love it when they say they have done everything the could to investigate such a simple issue with running my debit card transaction wrong and blaming it on my bank, i.e. running it through as a "debit" when I choose "credit" all of a sudden now  two times in a row after 4 years of doing it right as "credit".  And now they consider the issue closed on their end when nothing has been resolved.  That's no way to treat a long time customer and I really felt treated like I was a bother to them.  It's not like I ever paid them much money for this pre-paid cell phone service that I have used infrequently but I was really mad at the way they just wrote this off and pretty much told me "too bad".  Talk about "customer non-service".  It's also very hard to track the number of minutes left on my balance.  I'm due for an upgrade anyway.  I want to switch to the I-Phone from this flip phone but never again with Verizon Wireless.  T-Mobile is way more attractive.  Verizon  Wireless is not only an entity separatedfrom Fios but it's definitely a much different animal and their customer service has really gone downhill.  When you're treated like they don't care, it's maddening.
My customer service experience with Fios overall has been far superior to that most of the time.  My setup is simple and even though there are some people who will inevitably complain about anything just to vent, I definitely believe at least some of what is posted here.  And switching TV, phone, and Internet providers is a lot more involved than switching a cell phone provider.

Good to know I'm not alone with this particular problem, and that it probably isn't my particular phone. Curiously, when I first installed the new version of PCSuite - it told me that I needed to install some kind of plugin for PCSuite onto my phone. No idea what, and cannot imagine. At that point, though, I do not think PCSuite was crashing, just giving the strange message.
However, my phone, after its firmware upgrade did keep trying to download something mysterious, and was giving me a message about incompatible software. I solved that problem by deleting a couple of unknown apps (just alphanumeric gobbledegook) found through references on these forums. I wish I could remember the precise messages I was receiving. Phone itself now works fine, however - and no more strange messages, either from the phone or from PCSuite - just the PCSuite alleged crash. Uninstalling and reinstalling PCSuite, and its related apps (eg connectivity wotsit, cable driver wotsit) does not help.
Sounds like if we could just rename or bump up some version number reference within the PCSuite program and its related installs, we might solve the problem.
By the way - does anyone know where you can get an up to date PCSuite Cleaner. Seems to have disappeared from the Nokia site?Message Edited by ozerdavid on 07-Dec-200711:39 AM

Also, if you downloaded earlier in the week, make sure you have the 37.0.1 updated that was released on Friday (I think).
If needed, I suggest installing a slightly different way the next time:
    '''Clean Reinstall'''
We use this name, but it's not about removing your settings, it's about making sure the program files are clean. As described below, this process does not disturb your existing settings. Do NOT uninstall Firefox, that's not needed.
    (1) Download a fresh installer for Firefox 37.0.1 from https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ to a convenient location. (Scroll down to your preferred language.)
    (2) Exit out of Firefox (if applicable).
    (3) Rename the program folder
    ''(64-bit Windows folder names)''
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
    to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\OldFirefox
    ''(32-bit Windows folder names)''
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    to

    (4) Run the installer you downloaded in #1. It should automatically connect to your existing settings.
    Any difference?

  • Satellite M307 - many dots and lines on the screen

I bought this new pc in China half year ago,
However, when I move the screen today, there are always many dots and lines on it.
But if I don't touch it, it will be OK. I think it may be caused by the connection between screen and main physical system. Please contact with me: [email protected]
    Thank you!

    Hi!
I agree with you that is a connection problem or the display is faulty.
I think your notebook must be still under warranty so I would go to a local ASP.
They can order all necessary parts and exchange it.
    Bye

  • TS3694 After reading many articles and posts it appears to me that error code 3014 is so random no one knows what it really is.....

After reading many articles and posts it appears to me that error code 3014 is so random no one knows what it really is.....
Do I basically have to just keep trying over and over again?

A possible reported cause is using "Clear history when Firefox closes" to clear the browsing history, so if you use this then try to exclude the history.
In a few days (Tuesday) Firefox 30 will be released that has a fix for some of the causes, so can have a lot at that new version.

  • Many IX and S locks found

    Hi Chris
There are so many IX and S locks when i run ttxactadmin as below, and there are error 6003 in the tterrors.log. I am not sure how it comes and how i can do to avoid so many locks (IX,S), as the locks seem to lead to the poor performance.
    Regards
    Li

    Hi Chris
Thanks for your kind reply! It is very helpful to look into the problems and find some better resolutions.
I simply kill the PID associated to LOCKS, I cann't but have to kill the PID accossiated to the lock cause they really degrade the performance.
"When you get a 6003 lock timeout error in the application, the associated error text contains a great deal of information; what is the error text for the errors that you are seeing? That should help you determine where the real lock contention lies. If your application does not report/log that text then it needs to do so..."
---you mean the error text in the JAVA application or in TT?
Here is the TT configuration, most of attributes are set by default.
