Slightly broken adapter

I've had this old computer for quite some time, and I estimate its value to be in around $600 CAD, however, recently the power adapter (sort of) broke, and it seems the power adapter itself is around $100 CAD. Additionally, I live in Japan, and the apple.jp store does not seem to even sell my adapter, and I don't particularly want to pay another $20 to ship an adapter to me. This is really unreasonable, so I'm looking for other solutions.
In any event, I say sort of broke, because the prongs sort of like, popped out of the adapter and I have taped them back in. At the moment it's working, but if you look at it funny, it will cease to work, so I think this solution will soon fail. Since it's just the prongs, I thought I could save on money buying the Apple World Travel Kit ( http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/canadastore.woa/wa/RSLID?mco=E9 E41A4A&nplm=M8794G/B ), but then I sort of figured, when am I going to need to use all those? And if they can be sold in such a way, is there just a way to buy the U.S. prong head (U.S./Canada/Japan share the same prong type, and these are the countries I primarily travel to). Does anyone know where I could buy just the head?
Thanks!
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Well I have one right here with the swiveling pop out prongs? Taking it apart, breaking really, there is a lot of arc damage right at the swivel cam and input interface.
The input to the adapter body is identical with several types of AC cords that are very common. They all have a figure 8 looking female end. Some are lacking a symetrical indent but that can be carved out as are the type that have a flattened loop.
These are for several types of laptops including Dell, Compaq and IBM but especially HP printers. Also many types of Sony electronics use this same plug configurations. I'm always on the lookout for these types of plugs and always find them in thrift stores and garage sales for a few bucks.
Often they can be had for free because people have no idea what they belong to.

  • Broken adapter socket on iBook, can I replace?

Hi, just wondering if it is possible to buy and replace the socket in the iBook that the adapter goes into. The pin broke off of my adapter/charger, in the socket, and now even with a new adapter the thing won't turn on. So I'm assuming that this is the problem.

Yes, it's possible, but not exactly simple to do it yourself.
This is a link to the part you need (the DC-in board):
    http://www.welovemacs.com/9226254r.html
If it's the 933MHz to 1.33 GHz model, you need _these instructions_.
If it's the 1.42 GHz model, the instructions can be found here.
    Good luck.

  • Broken adapter

This weekend, a guest at my house set my iBook on the floor. When my husband picked it up, someone else's foot was on the cord and the power adapter was jerked out leaving the "male" part inside the plug-in spot. I read the postings for "dropped my ibook, ac adapter won't work" but I'm wondering if I have to replace the DC board or if there is a way to get the plug out of the socket. Any help?
    Thanks.

DT & T Computer Services in Fremont, California does it for $95 plus shipping.
John Sawyer (CJS Macintosh Repair-Apple Authorized) says he will match DT & T's $125 plus shipping price on the backlight cable repair. You could call and ask if he will meet their $95 plus shipping price on the DC-in board replacement:

MicroDoc sells the part for $59 plus shipping, and will install it for another $59.
PowerBook Tech in Berkeley, California parts out non-working iBooks and sells the parts. They sell the part at a fluctuating rate, based on demand, but are not currently doing repairs.
We Love Macs in Santa Clara, California lists the part for $49.95.
PowerBook Medic in Huntsville, Alabama charges $59.95 for the part.
Those are the links I have gathered over the years. Hope something there helps. (I have more links, but they are currently charging more for the part, so I see no point in listing them.)

    That depends on:
    1. If your iPad still has warranty coverage
    2. It doesn't work due to damage by you
I believe the charger is about $20.
Here's Apple's charger http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD836LL/A/apple-12w-usb-power-adapter?fnode=3c It's a 12W charger for the iPad 4, but you can use it on any Apple iDevice.

  • Power Cord slightly Broken...Replacement Question/Ideas

    Hello again everyone...
I have a question about the power cord on my 17" Powerbook G4.
I went to charge it up yesterday and the cord, while still attatched to the plug-in, is really only hanging on by wires.
I unplugged it from the computer and am still thinking about getting a replacement, even tho the Apple adaptor through the store is very low rated. I kinda don't want to buy a third party one but will if i have to.
I guess I am wondering if the power adaptor to my 2001 15" Powerbook Aluminum G4 would work on this here laptop.
I have the power cord with the round wrap around and I have two for my non-functioning second laptop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yep. Getting this error message again, looks like I have to get my 3rd cable. The cord becomes twisted, the connection at the very end bulges out (see below of my cable)
My first cable (connected to my Mac) was giving me the following error "Because a USB was drawing too much power..." I thought the issue was my new phone or my Mac - this was back in mid October, but figured out the cable broke.
Simply put -  These Lightning cables are flawed, I personally never had this issue with older 30 Pin connections.

  • The USB ethernet adapter for the macbook air is not working. Cable unplugged. How can I fix this for the recent patch 10.7.2?

I have recently purchased an ethernet usb adapter for the MBA and after a month it is not working. Says cable unplugged.
Now I have tried it with 2 other connections on other computers that are working and still no response. Many reviews or fixes online mention something with a 10.5.5 patch that seems quite outdated and do not work. Anyone figure out how to fix this or do I have a broken adapter?

I've used Apple's adaptor on a mini MBA without a problem.

  • Power Adapter Replacement

Hello all, I am curious about people's experiences with the Powerbook's power adapter. I'm officially on my third adapter in two years of owning my laptop. Anyone else have as much trouble with this as I have?
On a side note, I was within my one year warrenty when I ordered my repalcement power adapter today. I was told that they would only charge a small shipping fee but I noticed that a charge of $73.23 was put on my card from Apple. Is this temporary until I returned the broken adapter or is there a problem here? Thanks for any feedback.

I'm still using my original adapter (8 mo.) but when my battery wasn't being charged anymore, I opted to try an adapter from Apple before shipping in my PB to see if it was the adapter that was faulty. Before sending me the adapter, the Tech said that Apple would charge me that amount if I didn't send in the faulty adapter, if in fact it was faulty. Apple didn't charge me for shipping nor did I see the $73 charge in my bank account, maybe because I have Apple Care? I ended up sending in my PB.

  • Custom Scrollbar Broken in 11.5

It appears as though the "Custom Scrollbar" library behavior is slightly broken in Director 11.5. It works sometimes, but other times it behaves erratically - text scrolls down but not up, or jumps around - arrows work properly but dragger doesn't, etc...
The script says it hasn't been updated since 2000
Has anyone else seen this, and does anyone have a fix? Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. I'm seeing the issue in both authoring (mac) and in projectors (mac & win). It's a text member containing static text. The font is Arial, with variations in size, color, and length.
The arrows seem to generally work OK - the biggest problem is with the dragger. If you drag it up and down without letting go it usually works, but if you drag it too the bottom and let go and then re-grab it and try to move it back to the top in stops working.
Attachments are disabled in the forums so I've temporarily made a test file available, here.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

  • Macbook pro with retina display power adapter popped / exploded!

I was just charging my macbook pro with retina display when a loud "pop" noise came from the power adapter and the red light on the magsafe2 connector went out. I unplugged it all immediately, but there was a burnt kind of smell and bit of black 'sooty' type material around one of the edges of the adapter!
    Thankfully the rMBP appears fine.
I actually just got a replacement rMBP as the other one had a small scratch on the body. So both the charger and the rMBP that was atached at the time of the pop, will be returned in a few days anyway. Still I am a little alarmed by it all. The charger was plugged into a 6-way extension adapter with surge protection, so I don't think it was a power surge. And anyway my tv (also plugged into the socket adapter) was on at the time and there was no problem there. Can I assume it was just a fault in the adapter? I will tell them about it of course when I call up tomorrow to arrange the return. I just hope the same isn't going to happen with the new rMBP and charger!
Has anyone else suffered a similar "pop" and broken adapter?

Apple's warranty IS international. You have a one-year warranty when you buy the machine and you can extend that - and your phone support - to three years by purchasing the AppleCare Protection Plan, which is international as well.
Good luck with your new computer!

  • Bought battery for ibook G3 but won't charge up?

Hi, my original battery for my iBook G3 600 was almost dead so I bought a replacement. I have been using the battery only for about a week now & charged it up only a few times. Everything was fine until last night.
I put the ibook to sleep until this evening, when I tried to boot up I got nothing? There is a slight wirr in the background but no screen?
I decided to test the iBook with my old battery as there was still a little life left in it. The ibook then booted up no problem?? I dont understand it?
Can anyone help me with this problem? Be much appreciated...

The green light means the battery isn't charging. When everything is running right, this means the battery is charged but when things aren't working right, it simply means the battery isn't charging (for whatever reason).
These are the four most common possibilities when the battery will not charge:
    (1) there is something wrong with your battery
    (2) there is something wrong with your power adapter
    (3) there is something wrong with your power input board (the part that contains the port where you plug in the adapter)
    (4) there is something wrong with your logic board
In your case, since you've already replaced the battery, eliminating it as the problem, it is likely either a bad power adapter or a bad power input board.
Do you know someone with a known good adapter, or could you take it in to an Apple Store to have them check it out to see if another adapter will charge the battery?
The power input (DC-in) board (the part of the computer which houses the adapter port) may be going bad if it sometimes will charge the battery and sometimes won’t. Sometimes it will work intermittently before quitting entirely. When a DC-in board quits working, the computer will run fine from the battery, but won't run from the adapter, and the adapter will no longer charge the battery. To diagnose a bad DC-in board, you need to make sure it isn't the battery or the adapter at fault by swapping out first one and then the other, If it runs from a known good charged battery okay, but won't run from a known good adapter, then you are going to have to replace the power input board.
Usually, if it is a logic board problem, the iBook simply will not run from the battery. This happened to mine. The battery showed up in the battery status indicator. It was recognized by the computer and charged by the adapter (as shown by the battery status indicator). However, when I unplugged the adapter from the iBook, it was just like pulling the power cord from the wall on a desktop. The iBook immediately shutdown. Dead.
My husband’s problem was quite obviously the power input board because the adapter tip had broken off in the port. Often (and, sadly, in our case), this damages the power input board so that it no longer functions, necessitating replacement of the board as well as the broken adapter.

  • How do I turn off the tab bar in FF 24 when only one window is open?

I have just updated to FF 24.0 from FF 20 with Tab Mix Plus already installed. (OSX 10.6.8) From the Firefox Preferences menu, Tabs box, I have set the "Hide the tab bar:" option to "When I have only one tab." I have also gone to the Tab Mix Plus option box and set the drop down to the same value. Unfortunately, it doesn't have the desired effect. Firefox opens to my home page with a tab at the bottom. (I prefer the tabs at the bottom and that setting still works.) With only one page open, that tab is completely unnecessary, takes up space, and just plain bugs me.
Now, here's what I have found. Once I've started Firefox, if I go to the Tab Mix Plus options box and select "Hide the tab bar: Always" and then set the option back to "When I have only one tab" I can enjoy one page without the tab bar, that is, until I've opened several tabs and then closed all but one. Then I see the tab bar stubbornly remain. An incompatibility between FF and Tab Mix Plus, perhaps. Is FF 24 not letting Tab Mix see the number of open tabs? Dunno. But I can't seem to solve it.

Are you saying that the problem lies not with Firefox but with Tab Mix Plus? Tab Mix worked up through FF 20 to my knowlege. And I see from other questions that the persistant tab bar was an issue with FF 23 as well.
Please note, that setting aside the extension issue, the Firefox preference Tab option should turn off the tab option when there is only one window open without any help from addons or extensions. I have disabled Tab Mix Plus, and set the FF option correctly, but the problem remains. As I see it, FF is not working as this user expects it to and is (slightly) broken.

  • Photo orientation off in appletv

Help please.  I have been using Aperture 3.3.  Downloaded some photos from a Sony Cybershot DSC-W200.  This camera is slightly broken, or glitching, because after I take a photo, it sometimes shows up sideways or upside down, even on the camera display!  Auto orientation is set to "on" in the camera.  So I know there is a problem here, but it still takes great pictures.  I can easily rotate the pictures after downloading to Aperture, and all looks good!  Until I just picked up an AppleTV3.  Now, when I share my Aperture library to the AppleTV, the pictures on the TV are sideways and upside down again, and don't appear as they do on Aperture!  How can I straighten this out??

I tried your solution - went ot File Menu, Homesharing, Choose Photos to share with AppleTV, closed iTunes, re-opened.... then went back to TV and AppleTV and drilled down through the menus. It took awhile to find where the Photos are hidden in plain sight! I THINK it is going to work. I still don't see any indications that my Mac iTunes is seeing the TV, but the photos do appear to be trasferring. The Photos selection is buried under Music as a sub-tier after the rest of the list, Artists, Albums, etc. Right now, spinning wheel, I think because it is doing a first time 'load'.
