Slightly different airport issue

I've seen a lot of topics already about airport issues, but mine is slightly different. My computer has always had issues connecting to my Linksys wrt54g (802.11g). For a while after we switched ISPs it was better but not perfect. It would cut out for a while and I'd have to restart the router and modem to get signal back up.
Now my computer simply won't recognize my network at least 5 times an hour, probably more. Also, it now has this issue with the network at school. I don't know of anything that's changed to make this happen. At home I now rely on ethernet.
Could it be something wrong with my Macbook Pro 1,1's airport card? Could it be worn out? Can I replace it?
HELP PLZ!

Do you have any other computers connecting wirelessly to your router? I seem to remember seeing MANY issues with the WRT54G router and Macs. Possible that your router is bad as well. Your MBP being the problem is not the only possibility.

  • Slightly different CPU issue

Since upgrading to LE 9 I am noticing the systems has a tendency to run on just one CPU. This is on my MBP 2.2. If I start the song at zero it will engage both processors but any other time I just get one. This is bad. I need both.
    What to do???
    Thanks kids,
    Jimmy

I have the same issue (LE8) right processor meter is at 70% and the left processor meter at < 5%.
but it doesn't seem to make a difference when I start the song at 0.
there's a support note that "bounces happen on one processor only" but this is during playback and recording!

    Hey there,
During startup of my MacBook Pro, Captive Network Assistant checks 249 different airport, hotel and other misc. WiFi hotspots. Proabaly adding a good 3 minutes to my startup time. ***? This all started while I was on extended layover at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport.
I thought Captive Network Assistant was an iOS thing. No iOS devices in my home or office. Here's a portion of the console log during startup.

Looking at the times, I see this only takes a fraction of a second but my startup time is still much much longer than it ever was or should.
Does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of this? I deleted the Captive Network Assistant.app from my computer but the checking continues. It seems to be a rarely mentioned issue doing a web search, and nothing like this, although  it's referred to in certain articles.
    Really weird.
    Gregg

I'd take another look at your startup log.
If you look closely, you'll see that all those log messages occurred in the space of 30 milliseconds - by comparison, a human blink takes about 150 milliseconds.
So while I don't doubt you're seeing slow startup time, I don't think CaptiveNetworkSupport is the culprit, per se.
Fortunately, since every startup event is timestamped, it should be easy enough to determine what task is taking the most time.
As for CNS, it's not just an iOS thing - it's standard in Mac OS X, too. I'm also under the impression (but can't confirm) that it only checks the networks that you've previously connected to, so check System Preferences -> Network -> AirPort -> Advanced -> WiFi and delete any networks you no longer use or expect to connect to.

  • Creating several slightly different versins of video

Hi.  I am working on a video where we want slightly different versions of it for different coteries (this is a legal thing, they are all in English).  I know I could duplicate project and make changes but we will be contently evolving the video and most of it is the same. In FCP 7 I would do this with nested sequences.  I would have a sequence for each version and have a number of reusable nested sequences for the content that is the same.  Where it is different either edit straight into the sequence or have sequences specific to the version which I also nest.
How should I approach this with FCP X.  Maybe I can share compositions between projects in the same library?

I am editing straight in H.264, if I have performance issues I have proxies to fall back on.
You would be doing yourself a huge favor if you right click on the H.264 originals in the Event Browser and select Transcode media and select Create Optimized Media.  You can delete all those transcoded files later when you finish your project, but in the meantime, I have to say: FCPX will struggle to play original media like H.264 while editing. H.264 is a highly compressed "delivery" format optimized for playback only.  The transcoded optimized media in FCPX is ProRes 422 optimized for editing. Every frame in ProRes is a complete image of that frame whereas in H.264, only the data that changes from one frame to the next occupies a specific frame (except for "key frames" which are complete images used as a starting point in a "block of images"). It takes a lot of processing power to assemble a complete frame for editing/display when using that format.
Karsten was right about nesting compound clips... they will start taking a severe performance hit if you use too many. FCPX has a feature that allows you to build "Auditions" which lets you line up as many clips as you like to occupy a specific time in your project. You can select which version you wish to use right in the storyline. This is a very short tutorial demonstrating the use of auditions in FCPX : http://www.rippletraining.com/under-5-controlling-your-auditions.html

  • Powerpoint renders slides slightly differently on different Macs

I have again this weird problem with Powerpoint.
Sometimes, slides look differently on different machines.
The difference is not very large, but definitely noticeable, in particular, if there are other objects on the slide besides the text.
    For an example please see
    1. (MacBookPro)
    PDF: http://zach.in.tu-clausthal.de/tmp/pptonmacbook.pdf
    PNG: http://zach.in.tu-clausthal.de/tmp/pptonmacbook.png
    2. (Modbook)
    PDF: http://zach.in.tu-clausthal.de/tmp/pptonmodbook.pdf
    PNG: http://zach.in.tu-clausthal.de/tmp/pptonmodbook.png
The effect is most pronounced on the first line of bullet 2. (The "R^d" thing is an image.)
I created the PDFs using the print command in Powerpoint and then saving to PDF.
I created the PNG taking a screenshot.
As you can see, there are two problems:
    1.
When I print the slide on the MacBook to PDF, the layout of the text is slightly different than on screen.
    2.
The layout of the text looks different on both machines.
Both machines run Mac OS 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard).
The powerpoint versions on both machines are identical and up-to-date (12.2.3).
The powerpoint files on both machines are identical (just copied).
I use an in-house font on the slides, which is StoneSansITC; I copied the font files from one machine to the other; they all reside in ~/Library/Fonts, and this is the only place where these font files are located.
I have checked with 'pdffonts' and it seems to me that the Stone fonts are indeed correctly embedded in the PDFs. Here is the output of pdffonts:
    % pdffonts pptonmodbook.pdf
name type emb sub uni object ID
    NNCXIS+Symbol TrueType yes yes yes 24 0
    TYRNZE+Helvetica TrueType yes yes yes 21 0
    RTAEGG+MSBM10 Type 1 yes yes no 26 0
    ZXGVHI+StoneSansITCStd-Medium Type 1C yes yes no 8 0
    ZXGVHI+StoneSansITCStd-Medium Type 1C yes yes yes 17 0
    RTAEGG+CMSSI8 Type 1 yes yes no 27 0
    ZJTMTS+StoneSansITCStd-MediumItalic Type 1C yes yes no 22 0
    JHAIES+Wingdings TrueType yes yes yes 19 0
With pptonmacbook.pdf, pdffonts yields very similar output.
In Powerpoint, I have checked File -> Properties -> Contents, and the list under "Fonts Used" shows the StoneSansITC fonts alright.
The compatibility report in Powerpoint does not report any issues with fonts (only a few warnings about animations, movies, and "some shapes cannot be changed in earlier versions ..").
Does anyone have an idea how I could resolve this differences in rendering?
All hints, suggestions, and insights will be highly appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Gabriel.

  • Airport Issues (Again!)

It was last week when I posted about how my Mac Mini had recently started dropping the wireless connection when the signal is always full strength.
This is the post I posted last week:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4944604#4944604
Yes I did change the wireless channel and that has helped all the systems running off the wireless as there must have been some interference. Now there's none and this is evident on every other machine except the Mac Mini. And may I point out that even with the slight interference before the Mac Mini didn't totally drop the connection and it all worked reasonably fine.
I have come to the conclusion now that it is definately my Mac Mini. Also what is strange is that when I turn the PS3 on in the same room the Mac Mini's internet kicks into life.
Its a hard and complicated issue I've got going here. Please help.

Could you tell us more about how close other routers are to your computers?
And what continent do you live on? (Available channels are slightly different in NA and Europe.)
If you are in the US or Canada, I'd suggest dropping to channel 3 or 2.
Keep in mind that wireless interference can be coming from someone nearby who bought a new 2.4GHz cordless phone -- or from a router that doesn't advertise it's name. So it is impossible to know all sources of interference, and the best you can do is try some different channels. Channels overlap, and you have to be 3 channel numbers apart to avoid completely interference. In the US (at least) Channel 1 runs at lower power than the other channels -- so range will be less, which can be good or bad, depending on your situation.

  • S440 - Slightly different WIFI problem

I've read the other lengthy thread on the S440 wifi problem and i'm not sure if mine is slightly different as it has nothing to do with hebernation or sleep mode.
Basically, twice in the last week my wifi has dropped out. I've still been connected to the router, and all other devices in the home are connected and working fine, but my S440 cannot connect to the internet and i get the small yellow exclamation mark over my wifi icon.
The first time it happened, it eventually fixed itself the following day via the network centre trouble shooting, and it came up as some sort of IP address issue.
It happened again last night but it wouldn't fix itself this time. Although this morning, I booted up at the office and its working again.
Its definitely something to do with the laptop as both time all other devices have been ok.
Before i start downloading new drivers, i just wanted to check.

    Hi King Harvest,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I’m sorry to hear that you are facing the issue with Wifi on ThinkPad S440.

  • MBP Santa Rosa Airport Issues w/ Leopard

    Hi everyone,
I've noticed a few "quirks" since upgrading to Leopard. Whenever my Macbook Pro (Santa Rosa, 2.4 GHz, 17", 4GB RAM) is searching for a wireless network to join, the system becomes completely unresponsive. The mouse pointer stutters and jumps around the screen and it's impossible to precisely control its movement. When I can finally manage to click on the Airport icon in the menu bar and select the appropriate network to join, the problems stop as soon as a connection to a wireless network is established. It only happens when the system is searching for a Network. I should mention that it does this when I am at work (where I connect via 802.1x and TTLS) and at home (where I connect via an Airport Express Router).
Also, my computer no longer automatically connects to my work network (it does at home, though) after a restart or waking from sleep). I have my MBP set to prompt me for a password when it wakes from sleep, but it's near next to impossible to enter in the password because the system hangs so badly as it tries to establish a network connection. Of course, it doesn't connect unless I manage to click the Airport icon and specify the network I wish to join. Anyone have any thoughts on this?
All of this is a little frustrating since the latest updates to Airport in Tiger fixed all of the connection issues I had had previously with my MBP. When I first bought the machine I had many issues with network connections (as did many thousands of others who bought this model). I was wondering if other MBP Santa Rosa owners have observed similar behavior since upgrading to Leopard, and if so, does anyone have any suggestions as to how to fix this issue?
I should also mention that my Mac Mini C2D 1.83GHz (latest model) has no such issues so I think this is something that is still linked to this particular model of MBP.
    Many thanks!

I am moving this over here, from the boot camp section. Hopefully this is more the location that this needs to be in. Well, my problem is not as extreme as some, but still an annoyance. I installed Leopard the first day, and immediately had HUGE airport issues. The computer would lose my hub. I run an Airport Extreme with an Express as a WDS. The computer would see the express, but lose the extreme completely. So no internet. If I messed with it long enough, I could get the computer to recognize the extreme, but as soon as the computer went to sleep, it would lose it again. I installed the keychain update, and the situation didn't get much better. Most of the time I get the "You are not connected to the Internet" error in Safari, and when I run network diagnostics the computer "finds" the internet again, and I get a "Network configuration change detected" message and all my lights go green.
After I installed the Keychain update, I repaired disk permissions. Any ideas?

  • Nas on airport extreme not recognized by time machine. same nas was previously used as time machine backup on different airport extreme. are there any configuration files that i can delete to fix this problem ?

nas on airport extreme not recognized by time machine. same nas was previously used as time machine backup on different airport extreme. are there any configuration files that i can delete to fix this problem ?

Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.
    1) Has one of the recent updates either on the AE (firmware) or OSX disabled this function?
No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.
    2) Are there any changes I can make to get this working again?
If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server.

Since this morning all text in firefox looks slightly different - I think it still uses the same font, but renders it differently!? I would like to have it changed back to what it was. Any help is welcome.
    Some facts:
    - Happens only in Firefox (IE & Chrome still look the same)
    - Already did a reset to defaults
I'm using the latest version of Firefox

  • Published site slight different

When publishing my site to a folder on my computer it looks slightly different to how it does in iWeb. Some text is underlined and the alignment is not quite how it should be.
This isn't a problem with hosting the site on the net, it's something to do with what happens to the site in iWeb as it's being published to the folder.
    Any ideas?

On the Contact page, try increasing the size of the text box slightly. It loads with a return after "Email:" before it straightens itself out. Also do a Command A on pages to check that objects/text boxes are not touching or overlapping.
If you tried the troubleshooting steps and they didn't fix the underlined text problem you need to go one step further.
Delete the offending text, save and quit iWeb
Delete the .plist, reboot your Mac and run Disk Utility to repair permissions
Launch iWeb, add the text, save and publish
Deleting the text and rebooting gets rid of the screwed up info from the domain file. Doing a restart is the only way to clear redundant files out of iWeb so you should do it regularly.

  • Airport issues, and "home" folder question

I'm having a problem with airport utility on my Macbook pro with OSX 10.5.3. It somehow turns itself off, and cannot be turned back on unless, the computer is restarted. Once restarted, it only stays on for a few minutes and then is turned off again. I have a time capsule, and when time machine attempts to back up, it seems to trigger it. However, even with time machine turned off, it still gets turned off. I took it to a genius bar, and the guy there seemed to think making a new account would fix it, but it didn't. It actually created another problem. He deleted my old account but saved the "home" folder. When I log into my new account, I can't access any of my music, documents, photos, etc. How do I get stuff from the saved home folder, to my new home folder???

Hey Thanks for your replies. The airport issue is being resolved. I was on the phone with applecare, and the problem was actually something with the power supply. For some reason it wasn't supplying power (or enough power) to the airport card, and that is why it would shut itself off and not turn back on. So it is being serviced right now.

I've created a website on iWeb but when i publish it and view it in safari the fonts look slightly different. It's hard to explain but they basically just look worse. Can anyone let me know why this might be and how i could fix this problem. Thanks in advance.

Quit iWeb, go to Home Folder/Library/Preferences and delete the file com.apple.iWeb.plist.
Restart your Mac, launch iWeb and republish.
You should really convert any text done in "copperplate" to an image. Otherwise it will be converted to an (ugly) alternative on any computer that doesn't have this font installed.

  • Airport Issue After Waking From Sleep (White Unibody MacBook)

Hi all. On my new white unibody MacBook I have an Airport issue that always occurs after I wake the MacBook from sleep. I'm wondering if any of you have a similar issue and/or might not how to solve it.
Basically, when I wake the MacBook from sleep, it connects to my wireless network (and to whichever network I happen to be using at the time). A few seconds later, it will drop the connection, an exclamation mark will appear on top of the Airport icon on the menu bar, and when I click on the icon I see "Alert: No Internet Connection."
Then, if I just sit and wait, eventually Airport will connect to the network. But I have to wait -- selecting the network from the available list or turning Airport off and on doesn't help. And sometimes waiting isn't enough -- I sometimes have to go to "Create Network ..." and start all over to get a connection.
I've upgraded to 10.6.2 and the issue persists. I'd appreciate any help.

My wife's Macbook has EXACTLY the same problem and I've been through dozens of suggestions trying to fix it and the problem still persists.
The problem started right after I upgraded to Snow Leopard but also installed an Airport Extreme router and WPA2 wireless encryption. I've deleted all the networks, changed the order to put the Airport as the highest preference, deleted all the keys on the keychain, ran DiskUtility, all to no avail.
I'm not sure if this is somehow related to the Airport Extreme or occurs with any router. Also, have another MacBook Pro (unibody), and it does't have this problem connecting to the same Airport Extreme.
The other factor is it is intermittent --- and doesn't always fail. Rebooting the Macbook or the router will get it to re-connect, as will shutting off and turning on the Airport several times. But that's not a solution to the problem.
Apple needs to pay attention to this as many people are now reporting the problem.
