Slightly OT: Audio File Engineering Sample Manager

Hi All,
This is slightly OT, I've been looking for a better SRC converter, and did some research and found http://www.audiofile-engineering.com/sample_manager.php Sample Manager. It uses iZotope 64-bit SRC http://www.izotope.com/tech/src/ for sample rate conversion, indications are that it is better than Peak Pro, and in fact is so clean in its conversion from 96 to 44.1 it's scary.
I wanted to know if anyone here has used it. I would like to use it for sample conversion when I get some tracks ready for CD. I don't want to do the sample conversion in WaveBurner I've seen the reports on its aliasing and the results are kinda scary. I do want to use WaveBurner to glue the final pieces together before I send it to mastering house.
Your thoughts on this converter are appreciated. They only want $70.00 for it for a short period of time. It works incredibly well on Intel Macs, seems to use all processors to do its sample rate convert. Uses Automator so you can batch convert a bunch of stuff and even apply various AU plugs if you want as well.
Thanks in advance for indulging me
R

I did look at WE as well, and it doesn't have batch processing, I am not so much interested in audio editing, the facilities in logic are enough for what I do right now, at least I'm used to it and logic does it well.
I do want to use Wave Burner once I do my sampling rate conversion, I think Wave Burner is first class for everything except sampling rate conversion.
Here's wishing apple will license SRC in the future from iZotope and include it in any updates which may happen. I fact I am going to go post the suggestion right now.

  • Reconnecting Audio Files after Media Manager

Please forgive me if this has been covered before, but I'm not seeing a specific answer to the issue I'm having. I recently decided to do some cleanup on my machine, and used Media Manager to backup a project. When I reopened that project a TON of the files were no longer connected, and I've had to dig through the computer and reconnect them one at a time. The issue I am having now is with the audio files that exist in FCP as STAP files. I can find the stap files, but they are no reconnecting properly. I've tried to just simply re-render the audio, but it just comes out blank. Here is a screen capture of what I'm seeing. http://www.moorecreativedesign.com/FCP_Capture.jpg - Also If I try to right-click and "open in editor" it gives me an Unknown File error.
    Message was edited by: jesmo71

I think the problem is that the .STAP file are SoundTrackPro project files, which look for the original audio files.
But I guess you removed them or at least removed the disc they are on.
    That's why they render empty.
Media Manager doens't work on SoundtrackPro files (or Motion files for that matter). The proper way to handle these situations is
either export selfcontained movies from Motion, or audiofiles from SoundtrackPro and edit those in your timeline and THEN do the Media Manager,
or backup your Motion Projects and SoundtrackPro projects with all their assets along with the Media Management from FCP.
A nice [feauture request|http://www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html] would be to have Media Managaer handle all assets from the Final Cut Studio Suite.

  • BIzarre!? - Peaks of audio file higher in the negative side...

I've just been recording some bass today through my Avalon 737 into a Metric Halo ULN-2....
When i look at the audio file in sample editor it seems that the peaks are noticeably higher on the negative side of the waveform. - The file 'clipped' and reached (-100) many times but only (+100) on a handful of occasions...
Is this normal or is there something wrong with the preamp or audio interface?
    many thanks

    Hello again,
Ok, I've done a quick test today for two things:
    1. DC offset - logic analysed the tracks and said 'no dc offset found'. Although the troughs seem to be noticeably bigger than the peaks at the start of the notes, towards the end of the notes (bass gtr) the peaks were higher than the troughs. - i suppose this cancels out over the duration of the full note?
Then you do NOT have and DC voltage issues. From now on, IGNORE any and all comments on DC offset. You don't have any. This is a good thing.
    2. However, I've looked at every note and each one starts with a trough when first plucked - so assume i have -ve phase in my setup from what you previously said - this is the case with both the preamps in the ULN-2 and with the Avalon 737 as a pre and using the ULN2 as just an AD convertor.
I suspect bad wiring. Check the wiring for your equipment, and FOLLOW what the mfr recommends you should use for their equipment.
MOST (99%) of gear that has BALANCED wiring, is wired as follows:
    For an XLR connector :
    PIN 1 = GROUND
    PIN 2 = COLD voltage.
    PIN 3 = HOT voltage.
    For TRS (1/4" Tip-Ring-Sleeve) connectors:
    SLEEVE = GROUND
    RING = COLD voltage.
    TIP = HOT voltage.
    Cheers
Is there anyway that I could reverse the phase that's coming from the ULN 2 going into the computer?
Yes. Re-wire your setup. Someone is not playgin nice with the pinouts...
I can only assume negative phase in the audio files would be a problem if the > software instruments produce positive phase audio when playing?
Absolutely. this is probably why, when you mix, some notes sound thin, while others sound too big and boomy. And you have to do extreme EQing to correct the issue.
    Does that make any sense?!
    It does to me.
thanks again for all your help,
    J
    Cheers

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • How do I properly manage audio files with iTunes?

    Hello Dear Readers,
I am going to start using iTunes exclusively for my music collection management. Previously, I had only used iTunes for managing content for my iPhone 4. Now, I am wanting to import all of my media (music) files into iTunes for general use and playback.
For example, I have over 3,000 music files, and I would like to know the best way to get them into iTunes. From a lynda.com training video about using iTunes, I learned that there is a folder called "Automatically Add to iTunes", which is monitored by iTunes for new files to import into the iTunes library. However, I would like to know if this is the *best* way to do this. For example, can I just*move* my 3,000 music files into this 'Automatically Add' folder and then let iTunes do its thing?
Will iTunes *move*the files that it is able to manage OUT of this folder and into one of its managed folders, such that there would be no duplicate file left behind? Is it correct in saying that the files that are left in this folder that were not able to be handled by iTunes and must be handled differently before they can be imported into iTunes. Or is there just an all around different, and better, way to get these music files into iTunes? Thanks for your advice and opinions!
There is also the issue of what to do with the commercial CDs I have (less than 50).  I would like to discard these and just maintain them on digital form, e.g., my 2 TB hard drive.  However, I am getting varying opinions as to how to do this.  I need 2 things:  1) to archive the CDs for retrieval later in case I need the songs that are on them, and 2) MP3 versions of the audio CD files for use on my flash drive which plays on my car audio system.  These would also be the files that I manage in iTunes.
Some people have suggested using Exact Audio Copy to make a FLAC and a LAME MP3 copy of myCDs.  Others have suggested keeping an ISO copy of the compact discs for reference archive. Personally, I am wondering if I should just import my commercial CDs directly into iTunes, and then pay Apple $25 annually to maintain copies of these, as announced by Steve Jobs at the WWDC that this cloud functionality was forthcoming.
I am in need of some informed, educated opinions and suggestions as to how I should proceed.
Then, there is also the naming convention of the files.  When the files get ripped from CD, I can add the freedb information to them for the ID3 tagging.  However, I need to know how to specify in what system that the file names are comprised. This is what I am thinking of as my folder and file name format, at this point.
For the naming scheme of the audio files, I am proposing the following:
For most music by 1 artist on a disc, I would do as follows:
Folder Name: AlbumArtist - Album Title (year)
File Names:  Track number (from 1 on up, with NO leading zeros) Track Title
For compilations with various artists, I would use the following for the schema:
Folder Name: VariousArtists (album artist) - Album Title (year)
File Names:  Track number (1 on up) Track Title - Track Artist.
Do these seem like reasonable naming schemes that would be good for using on all audio software and equipment, such as my iPhone, my car audio flash drive player, and in iTunes?
I know that this is a lot to ask, but I am just trying to learn how to do things correctly and most efficiently so that I don't have problems down the road with my iTunes library.  I welcome input, discussion and of course, dissent!  Thanks!

how do you do it with itunes 11???
    it is really frustrating me!!

I'm running logic pro 8.0.2 on Leopard 10.5.8. I've recorded an evening of live music, then cut the recording into songs using one audio file folder ad multiple song files. When working on an individual song, I can't access the sampler.  I get the message "nothing to display" or "no region or audio file selected"  After much research on the web, I believe this is a permanent bug.  Does anyone have a good work-around for this type of work.  We record live 16T band rehearsals constantly and would love to be able to break individual songs out of the large file and be able to use the sampler.  Thanks in advance for your ideas!  Cheers.

Another thing - if I copy one of the tracks to another track, then the sample editor works on the copied track.  I don't want to have to copy 16 tracks to new tracks to be able to use the sample editor on a project.  Thanks again.

  • Finder - audio file info - bitrate, sample rate, etc

Is there a way to find out what bit rate and sample rate an audio file is without opening it in QT and then CMD+I from there?
I don't see detailed info when I get information from Finder. Is a script or anything that will allow me to find this info quickly in Finder?

    juhani h. wrote:
Works fine here, too. But make sure you´ve ticked the box "Convert audiofile...etc", like M-Dan pointed out.
I tested it and if unchecked the imported file plays at the wrong speed. Amusing at first, but potentionally disastrous.
    /J
Does NOT work in repeated tests on my system, and yes, the 'convert audiofile' box is ticked. Wouldn't report it as a bug if it wasn't....
This almost ruined a session of mine and cost me a deadline, but luckily I caught the SNAFU in time and converted the files individually.
Very odd though to hear that it works on some users' systems. How can this be a system specific bug? Are you sure you're dragging files in from the Finder to your arrange page? And Logic converts them? Are we talking 48k files being converted to 44? Or vice versa (44 to 48)?
In my case, it was a 48k session and Logic failed to convert the 44k files I had mistakenly been sent.
Since I've noticed other weirdness (like malfunctioning Apple Loops) at 48k, I still think Logic is less than bullet proof at different sampling rates. Just a hunch though.

  • Separate drives for samples and audio files..?

    Hello all
I am moving to Macbook Pro (previous gen) with Logic Studio after years of PC (feel like I’m standing on the edge of a precipice staring anxiously down!). Will be looking to use it live in our 3-piece band to run existing MIDI Files and live triggered BFD drum samples
Have decided on getting an Echo AudioFire 8 to handle the necessary Audio outs and MIDI connections and will be replacing our rather dated Korg 05R/W General MIDI module with virtual instruments / samples libraries
I am thinking that once the Bass (probably Orange Tree CoreBass samples through Kontakt 3) and Orchestration (still wide open to suggestions on that!) are done, they’ll be exported as Audio files or perhaps ‘frozen’ in Logic to ease the load on real-time processing
    Here’s the query then:
*Assuming that the internal drive will be for OS and programs only, will having the sample libraries and exported audio song files on separate physical drives from each other pay dividends – particularly when considering that the audio tracks (probably no more than two or three stereo files) will be streaming whilst BFD is triggering live samples via MIDI input..? I’m wondering if the samples and audio separate drives situation will be considerable beneficial, or given the intended application, would this approach be merely over-speccing things?*
If that is thought to be the best approach, what do you believe to be the best way of hooking these up? I plan on using the FW400 port for the Echo AudioFire 8 and have ordered a Sonnet Express eSATA Card to hook up an external drive. Should any additional drive look to use the FW800 port or should I simply tag into the spare eSATA port on the Sonnet Express Card..? My concern with the latter is that a bottleneck would occur in the Express port and defeat the whole object
I would really appreciate any thoughts on this
    Many thanks
    Clive

    My opinions:
If you're really only talking about 2-3 audio tracks per song, having them on a separate drive is not going to make that much difference. I'd recommend just using one drive for both audio and samples for now, you can always add another hard drive later if you're getting disk errors, or if you start using more audio tracks.
If you're looking for a good orchestral library, I recommend Vienna Symphonic Library Special Edition (about $500). VSL sounds great, and this particular set is much cheaper and still gives you a good amount of instruments/articulations.
If you do go with a third drive, use both eSATA ports. Even with a little bottlenecking, you should see substantially faster performance than with FW800. The data transfer rate of eSATA is over 3 times that of FW800.

  • Open an audio file and get sampled data

    Hello,
there is a way to open an audio file and get an array with sampled data in Java?
I need to perform an fft of my audio file.
    Best Regard
    Manuel

    Dear Mr Thompson,
this is my first post on this topic.
I have already tried various way to get samples from audio file, in particular I focused my attention on this:
    http://jvalentino2.tripod.com/dft/index.html
I have implemented the code illustrated in the tutorial but the result is unsatisfactory. If I try to plot the samples of obtained from a pure tone the result is not the expected waveform but something very different, a Fourier analysis of this data is completely useless. Hence I am looking for a way to read data in a similar manner to the matlab's function auread (http://www.mathworks.com/access/helpdesk_r13/help/techdoc/ref/auread.html).
Fft is not really hard to implement but I'm using a scientific library (http://www.ee.ucl.ac.uk/~mflanaga/java/) for obtain values in frequency space.
    I apologize for the inaccuracies.

  • Sample rate of audio files

I need to view the sample rate of audio files in the info menu on OS X Lion. It appears on Mountain Lion but is there a way to get it to appear on Lion?

Drag the file onto the QuickTime icon in the Dock and hit command-i:

  • Trying to replace a sample audio file

I regularly drop in sample stock music into my timelines, and replace them with the purchased high quality files at the end of the project. I can't seem to do this in Final Cut Pro X. There doesn't seem to be a way to replace a clip in the event browser with a new one. I even named the high quality audio file exactly like the low quality one and replaced it in the Event Folder in the Finder, but Final Cut Pro X will not accept it as the original! Has anyone else had any luck with this??

You can use "Replace or Double Drum Track" in the Track menu.
But you´ll have to sort out manually what´s kick, snare etc, if the
source is a mono drum track.

  • Does the ATV3 re-sample audio files to 48kHz?

I've read here that all audio files are played back at their native sampling rate (44.1kHz) using an ATV 1.  With ATV 2, all audio files are re-sampled, unfortunately, degrading sound quality, from 44.1 to 48 kHz.  Is this still the case for the new ATV 3?

  • Sample editor doesn't open selected audio file in 8.0.2

    Hey there.
I've just upgraded to Logic pro 8.0.2 from 8.0. When i drag an audio file (a) into the arrange page and then double click on it, it says "nothing to display". It then randomly displays the file (a) but when i double click on another audio file (b) it opens up audio file (a).
Very strange behaviour that surprisingly didn't occur in Logic pro 8.0.
Any suggestions would be really appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hey Jorge.
Thanks for the suggestion. I've actually had to re-install the bug ridden 8.0.0 version to get it to work. Never thought i'd be saying that
I haven't updated it yet as i need to get some work done before i waste another day trying to sort out mysterious errors.
    Thanks anyway
