Slightly OT: Getting rid of remnants of old programs?

Hi - just noticed that when I open up Firefox and then look in the "Firefox" menu area - I see "iglasses settings" - I had tried that program once for ichat but deleted it. The same thing seem sto be with Skype - I reinstalled it after having deleted it and many old names automatically reappeared in the client. Is there a place where all these old settings are still flagged in OSX? Thanks.
Steve

FireFox has it's own preferences and you can usually just go to the Add-ons/Plugins tab and remove any old plugins you do not want any more.
Skype also has it's own preferences file. Most programs store their preferences in ~/Library/Preferences - just go to the Preferences folder and type skype into the Spotlight search box in the top right corner of the window. Make sure that "Preferences" and "File Name" are selected at the top of the search.
I have a file named - com.skype.skype.plist in my user/preferences folder.
You could also check this folder to see if there are any references to 'iglasses'.

  • How do I get rid of Lasoaren? Remove program etc. doesn't do it.

Somewhere I went afoul in updating (I thought) Firefox - It took me a while to realize that "Lasoaren" is not a Firefox entity. I went to remove program, which it appeared to do, but I can't get rid of it. Windows Essentials does not "see" it.
There are directions on the web as to how to get rid of it, but I'm afraid I might fall into a deeper hole if I follow directions from an unknown entity.
Input from this community will be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Hello,
    Please see:

It is a good idea to exercise caution when following sites you aren't sure about. I always look through the steps from the sites to make sure that they use '''free''' and '''trusted''' tools to remove problems. MalwareTips in my experience has good instructions.
Another community you can search for solutions is the Microsoft Community (and they recommended the same link):

  • How do I get rid of unwanted downloaded apps/programs that "came with" my download?

I just downloaded PhotoShop Elements 12 - which I needed for work - onto my brand new Mac, and now there are these annoying UNWANTED apps sitting there that I can't get rid of: checkclientstatus, AALauncherUtil and macui. Hope can I dump these things? Really puts a bad taste in my mouth about wanting to download anything else from Adobe in the future.

kglad - Thanks so much for responding so quickly and trying to help. It took awhile, but I finally found out where they were located and how to dislodge them. It's just incredibly annoying when someone - or something - else lodges itself in your "home" and attaches with electronic superglue...especially when you're just moderately tech-savvy. It's nice to know someone out there - who is - was willing to help.
(clearly, they weren't apps, but they popped up on my Launchpad like them...as I said, I'm moderately tech-savvy...if that...)

I have a program running on my iPhone 5 - it looks like a phone floating over some keys, like keys on a keyboard. Since it's been there, I haven't been able to get a call in on the phone except with headphones. Any suggestions about getting rid of this program?

How can I get rid of my desktop.OLD from a user account using termninal?  I have called Applecare and the person did not know how to use terminal to do this.  I tried logging into the root user account but it freezes when the file is on the screen.  The desktop.OLD file is my wife's former desktop that got corrupted somehow and froze finder.  We solved that problem but the desktop.OLD file can still freeze finder if it shows up on the screen.  Can I delete this file and if so how?

Check the System Preferences again under Accounts. Choose your account and then check the startup items. You've probably got one in there that is looking for an item which no longer exists.

  • I upgraded to iPad2 from original. How do I get rid of original iPad info on computer so I can synch computer with iPad2 info?, I upgraded to iPad2 from original. How do I get rid of original iPad info on computer so I can synch computer with iPad2 info?

I gave my daughter my original iPad when I upgraded to iPad2. I deleted iTunes and Quick Time from my computer thinking it would get rid of the old info from the original iPad.  I reinstalled iTunes and Quick Time and tried synching my new iPad2.  It downloaded the old info from my original iPad to my new iPad2 and now it calls my new iPad2 Linda's iPad.  How do I get rid of all the old info and just have my new iPad2 info? I don't mind that it put somethings from my original iPad (movies, books, some - not all - my music, etc). I can't even synch the bluetooth of the iPad2 to the bluetooth of my PC (I think it's all related somehow).

Why would you not want to keep all of the data, apps, music, photos etc that you had on your first iPad on your new iPad? Don't you want to keep all of that content? You bought the apps, music etc with your iTunes account I would assume so why not keep them?
Deleting iTunes simply removes the application from your computer - not the content in your iTunes library.
If you want to rename your new iPad - connect to your PC - launch iTunes - double click on the iPad name on the left side of the iTunes window and you can type in the new name. Then hit the return key on your keyboard.
    How to rename your device....

Sync the Bluetooth of the iPad2 to your PC? You can't sync the two devices via Bluetooth. You pair devices via Bluetooth but that would do no good for you anyway. You can't transfer content from the iPad to the PC via Bluetooth.

  • Getting Rid of Un-Used Factory Software

    Hi,
First off thank you so much to everyone who took the time to answer my questions regarding running Oblivion with boot camp on my MBP. Here is my finaly questions for the night.
    Q. Are there any common programs that come pre-installed on a MBP that a normal / basic user deletes to gain more space on the hardrive?
    Q. To Uninstall an application do you just drag and drop the program to the trsh from the application folder?
    Thanks again!
    John

Incidentally, iWork '06 (two programs) is 1.85GB; Microsoft Office 2004 (four programs + extras) is 500MB.
iWeb is 630MB, and GarageBand/iDVD are about 1.5GB each.
Anything you don't need, you could always chuck onto a DVD or external hard disk just in case. Biggest app I have installed is World of Warcraft (5.2GB). You can also get rid of things like old iPod software updates (50-100MB each) - once they're installed, you won't need them again. I recommend using OmniDiskSweeper to poke around your HD to see what there is - if in doubt, I'm sure someone on these forums can tell you whether or not something is safe to delete. Blank DVDs are cheap, and if you back stuff up onto them before deleting you should be OK.

  • How do I get rid of the trial question on my Premier elements - which I purchased in Jan 2014

I purchased my Adobe  Premier Elements in Jan 2014 - but now every time I use the program for editing and DVD burning it confronts me with a trial program (saying I have 2 days left on the trial) - how do I get rid of this trial Advertisement/program so that I can continue with the Premier Elements that I have already purchased?
         Thanks Brian Dearden@

    Mooivoel
The answer would be expected to be....
When you are given the Trial Message, click on the tab that says License The Product (or something like that) and then follow the instructions which will include inserting your purchased serial number.
Have you been there and done that?

Where are the masters actually stored upon conversion from Aperture to Photos? Photos?
The master files are stored on your drive, but they are not actually stored "in" any folder. Folders are really just special files that store various bits of information about the files associated with that folder, including links to where they actually are stored. That's why you can "move" a file from one folder to another very quickly: all that you really are doing is moving the link & other info from one folder to the other folder, while the file itself stays where it was.
Because of this, it is possible for more than one folder to link to the same file -- in the Finder it looks just like there are two copies of the file, one in each folder, but there really is just the one copy. From the description in the Photos saves disk space by sharing images with your iPhoto or Aperture libraries doc, it looks like that's what happens when you import your iPhoto library into Photos -- both the old iPhoto Library "file" (which actually is a set of folders & subfolders of files) & the Photos Library (also consisting of folders & files) contain links to the master files, but like the Apple doc says, there really is just one set of master files being stored.
This is very similar to the way Time Machine backups look like they have multiple copies of the same unique file, one in each time-stamped backup folder, but there really is only one copy on the Time Machine drive. My guess is Apple is using hard links for this, which means the actual master files will not be deleted from the file system as long as at least one link remains to each of them.
So you should be safe in deleting the old iPhotos Library once you are absolutely sure you don't need it, but to be sure, if it was me I would make a backup just in case, or better yet just leave it alone.

  • Updating Contacts On iPod, Getting Rid Of Old Entries

I'm on my third iPod (stop improving them Apple!), but I'm having some trouble synchronising my contacts in Outlook with iTunes onto my iPod. Basically, I've saved all my contacts as vcards and put them onto my iPod, but all the old contact entries I put on previous iPods still appear on my new iPod so I have 2 or even 3 entries for most people, and I can't get rid of the old ones. When I go into the iPod's disk drive I can see all the new contacts, but not the old ones, but they're there when I look on my iPod!
Any suggestions on how to get rid of the old contacts?
    Thanks,
    Rob.

If you're manually putting the vcards on your iPod,
then iTunes is still syncing your old contacts.
Open up iTunes and go to your iPod Preferences, (In
iTunes right click on your iPod and go to
Preferences) and go to the iPod tab. Make sure that
Sync Contacts is not checked and then resync. You
might have to recopy those Vcards into your iPod.
    Hope that helps,
    AL
Thanks for the reply - have done what you suggested. I now have 2 copies of every contact on my iPod. I guess this is a slight improvement over before seeing as then I had different contacts having 1,2,3 or even 4 entries with new or old info in them. I'm still baffled as to why i've got two copes of each contact though - looking in the contact folder on the ipod I can only see one entry for each contact...
    Any ideas?
    Rob.

    Hi MyAppleID99,
You may want to check to make sure the clip hasn't been moved back and forth between wide screen and standard aspect ratios; sometimes a combination of letterboxing and pillarboxing can lead to a black frame "windowbox" when playing the final video. You may find the following article helpful:

  • I have changed my Apple ID n pw , however an old Apple ID pops up asking for the pass word , I can't stop it or get rid of it, or find a pass word that works. Or reset it?

I Changed my Apple ID and PW they work fine. But the old Apple ID keeps popping up asking for a PW, how can I get rid of the pop up request Or the old Apple ID? This only happens on the iPad.

Sign out and back into your apple id from Settings>iTunes and App stores>(Your apple ID)>Sign Out and then sign in again with the new address. Close app store from running in the background (or restart the phone if your unsure how to do this). If when trying to update any apps they are still asking for the old apple ID, delete and re-install those apps.

How to get rid of an old Apple ID on my iphone 5 ? The ID belongs to a store I bought my iphone from ,and it's in another country.

You can't.  That's the new security feature of iOS7 that users (and others) requested to prevent stolen devices from being restored by theives and reused.  Contact the "store" you purchased your phone from and see what they say.
