Slightly worring warning when I repair permissions in disk utility.

Hi there.
Apologies if this appears like I'm posting in multiple sections. I've already put this in the MacBook forum, then realised it might be more relavent here.
When I repair permissions, I'm getting the following error message;
*Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" has been modified and will not be repaired.*
Is this something I should be concerned about? I'm not noticing any funny behaviour, but I'd be happier if I wasn't getting this warning.

I believe this is a standard benign error. Search around a little, probably using the this year or last year option in the search page. You'll probably find a link to the KB article that says specifically that this is ok.

  • Why don't I see the log when I repair permissions with Disk Utility

I'm having issues with Safari hanging or bogging down to a snail's pace lately. I have tried several times to repair permissions with Disk Utility. It runs for several minutes, but shows nothing in the log even though the box is checked to show details. I've never seen this before. I don't know if Disk Utility is doing it's job or not....
    Any thoughts?

If the progress bar goes to the end, then you don't have any permissions needing repair. The fact that Safari is slowing down has nothing really to do with permissions.

  • No issues, but curious..why do I always get permissions repaired when I click on 'repair permissions in Disk Utility......it usually has to do with core permissions and it's happened since i got this MacBook Pro in 3/11..it continues with 10.7

  • I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13

After installing iTunes update 11.1, I can no longer repair permissions with Disk Utility, v. 13. When I attempt to repair Disk Permissions, there appear dozens of items showing that "Permissions differ on "Applications/iTunes.app....", then it says that it has been repaired. However, when I do a second or third repair immediately afterwards, I see the same thing again.

  • Repair permissions in Disk Utility won't stop

OK, I've never done permissions repair on our MacBook Pro 15" (2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).  (My apologies to the fastidious cleaners among this group.)  I've done multiple upgrades over the past 4 or so years that we've owned it, including the latest upgrade to Lion for iCloud purposes.  Because of processing time issues with Safari, I (a) cleared its cache, (b) deleted certain files in Home/Library/Safari (form values and download.plist) and in Home/Library/Preferences (com.apple.Safari.plist) and (c) tried to repair permissions in Disk Utility.  All of this was per the recommendations of another Apple discussion group.  (I also purchased (but have not yet installed) additional RAM to accommodate Lion and to address general operating slowness.)  I started repair permissions about 11 or 12 hours ago and it's still going!  While our MBP has a boatload of files on it, I'm wondering whether this is normal?  Should I stop it and try something else?  Thanks.

Cancel out of the Repair Permisisons and reboot the computer and start Safari.
Download this free program called OnyX and run ALL the checks, cleaning and maintainance tasks and reboot at the end.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/
OnyX is much safer to use because it reminds you to reboot the computer to rebuild the cache files, which you likely didn't do, then went to Repair Permissions and files were missing and ikely the reason why it got stuck, but it could be something far worse and hopefully OnyX will reveal more details with the initial checks.
This is what I would do in your case.
Lion will run much better with more memory than 2GB, however I would seriously consider fixing your OS X and software issues first before upgrading the RAM.
While your inside the machine replacing RAM, you might as well replace the hard drive with a newer faster, 7,200 RPM drive too and rebuild the whole OS from the ground up.
Because your machine was upgraded one OS over another, you likely got a lot of cr*p built up and seriously need to consider doing a
backup of files on a external drive, better a whole drive clone
a format and "fresh install" of 10.5 on the new internal drive, use the same username and hard drive name as before
then upgrading to 10.6, make another clone here on another external drive
then upgrading to 10.7, followed by installing all your necessary programs fresh from orignal sources
and finally returning the contents of your user files folders (Music, Documents, Pictures, Movies etc) from backup right back into the same folders on the new configuration.
In that order as it's important for maintaining perfromance that the user files are returned last. Hard drives are faster up front than they are as they get filled up, since programs and OS doesn't move around much, installing them first as it's up front where the perfromance is best and your files, which do change often, are placed further down into free space thus the OS and programs remain fast for a longer period of time.
It is a LOT of work and you have a LOT to learn, but you got a older computer that you have neglected for some time and your trying to run a newer operating system. Good thing is your processor and video card are decent, so the computer has potential to live like a new machine. If your willing to apply labor or have a Mac geek do it for you. Else your looking at a buying a new machine prematurely.
If you can't c boot off the 10.5 grey disks, then your just going to have to start with 10.6 and buy iLife at the AppStore when you download Lion again with your AppleID (option click on Purchases)

  • Repairing Permissions in Disk Utility (10.7 MBPro 2.4GHz), but still slow! Any advice upon reading my output?

    Current scenario:
2-yr old up-to-date Lion 10.7 on my MBPro Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHZ upgraded RAM to 6GB is suddenly showing sluggish startup and opening applications very slowly (non Pro Apps and Pro Apps alike)…when multiple apps are open simultaneously (simple stuff like: Safari, Photo Booth, etc) and I have a handful of tabs open in Safari, I am getting slow response in every category from time it takes to open an application, all the way down to simple keystroke delays. This is becoming really annoying and having a direct negative effect on my ability to be efficient and multitask! so I zap the PRAM a few times using the startup key combo, and try running DiskUtil to repair permissions. But alas, I seem to get the same thing each time after repair/verifying permissions a couple times… my output pasted below.
My QUESTION: I know from articles I've read on this discussions board that I can all but ignore the output lines like "ACL found but not expected on…" but is there anything in the output i've pasted below that I should be worried about? Anything that might be pointing to a bigger problem?
I also startup in singleuser mode and run /sbin/fsck -fy once every 10 days or so…is this the right thing to do? My overall speed and efficiency is not improving. Please lend me your infinite knowledge, apple gurus. Thanks!

You can ignore the SUID messages > Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore and that has no effect on speed.
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Click your Apple menu icon top left in your screen.
From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info then select Storage from the menu.
Make sure there's never less than 15% available disk space.

  • Repair permissions with disk utility not showing details

I've recently upgraded from Lion OSX 10.7.5 directly to Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.3.
    1. Now, every time I use the Disk Utility to repair permissions, the details of the repair are missing. Not that I really need to see the repairs but the information confirmed that something was done. Now I see only what appears on the attached screen shot at the end of the repair.
When I had OSX 10.7, I always saw which files were repaired.
    2. Also, the estimated time for repair is off. Under Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.3, the estimate says a fixed "1 minute" and remains so until finished. I just time the repair at 3.5 minutes and the estimate remained at 1 minute.
Under OSX 10.7 the repair time estimate would begin at 23 minutes or so then quickly work itself down in minutes until the repair was completed.
Can anyone tell me what's going with my iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.8.3).

    James --
Over the years, the function or understanding of Repair Permissions has changed drastically.  When I first came here in 2004, lots of people thought RP was the "be all, and end all" of all Mac problems. (Myself included.)  It was right up there with "take two aspirins, and call me in the morning." kind of response.
In fact, the notations you see are not in fact "errors."  They're notations.  And if you run them all day, you will almost always see the same ones over and over.
Every once in a while, if you experiences really wonky problems that seem unexplanable, the option to RP makes sense. Especially after a huge major application installation, especially Adobe apps
RP is not like a regular maintenance procedure.  So, if you're not expelriencing very significant problems with your Mac, repairing permissions is probably not a good use of your time.

  • Repairing Permissions with Disk Utility on PowerPC

I was just wanting to check this.
If I want to repair permissions on a powerpc G5, can I do this from the copy of disk utility installed on the machine or do I need to do it from the Start up disk.
I have unfortunately misplaced the install disk copy of leopard and was also having an issue with the copy I had being read on my superdrive.
I feel need to do a permissions repair to resolve some minor issues.
I have tried using Target Disk Mode with another Powerpc but this does not allow permissions repair but only disk repair.
Any clarification on this would be most helpful.

    Thanks for your response.
I recall reading somewhere that such repairs had to be done from a separate disk which is why for years I have always done it in this manner.
So it turns out then that I can do this from the Disk Utility on the hard drive already, which makes life a lot easier.
Is there any procedure  required to do this  such as shutting down open applications or anything?

  • Repair Permissions in Disk Utility Doesn't Catch This:

If permissions on the folder /System/Library/LaunchDaemons are set to anything other than 755 (e.g. 775) Leopard will not boot past single user mode. Before figuring out the specific permissions problem and fixing it by hand I tried Disk Utility's "Repair Disk Permissions" function. Disk Utility fixes permissions of files inside of the aforementioned folder, but not the folder itself. A verbose boot provided less detail than was needed to troubleshoot the problem.
Question #1) Can I modify Disk Utility's permissions database to include this folder?
Question #2) Can this be issue submitted 'upstream' so that future Leopard users don't have the same problem?
Question #3) Why was there no verbose output as the result of a permissions problem during a verbose boot?
Question #4) Is there any way to make a verbose boot really really verbose?
    Thanks!

this is strictly user to user forum. If you want to communicate with apple you should submit a bug report
    https://bugreport.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/RadarWeb.woa/wa/signIn
That folder is a system folder and should definitely be covered by the repair permissions process so there should be no need to add it to the permissions database. I have no idea why it's not fixing the folder itself. I can confirm that the things you describe happen on my computer as well.

  • After I repair permissions via Disk Utility, my HP1012 doesn't work. I get a message that permissions have to be repaired and do I want to do so. Yes, then it works again.

    Annoying, but not serious

I'm not sure of the value of this, but it won't take long to try and might help. Have you tried repairing disk permissions whilst booted from the Recovery HD rather than whilst you are normally booted.
Restart holding down Command + r and from the screen with four choices select Disk Utility. Choose it and repair disk permissions. Restart as normal from the Apple menu and test.
If that doesn't help, try once again resetting the printing system, but before adding the printer back in go to Macintosh HD>Library>Printers and move the HP folder to the desktop. Log out and back in again (or restart) and try to set up the printer afresh. Hopefully this will initiate a fresh install of the software. If this solves it you can trash the HP folder on your desktop.

  • Can you work while you repair permissions with disk utility?

I had read somewhere that it was fine to repair permissions while you run Safari and other apps on your Mac at the same time. Obviously, everything runs slower while you are doing this, but other than that are there any ill side effects from doing this? (i.e., are things not repaired for apps you are running, etc.?)
I've been searching all over the place for an answer on this and would appreciate an educated answer from the pros here. My assumption from what I know of permissions repair is that it's harmless, but I'd like an expert explanation.
    Thanks!
By the way, I'm running 10.5.8 if that makes any difference.

Not that I'm aware of. It would be implied by the fact that you should repair permissions while booted into your normal system. Since hundreds of processes are already running apparently repairing permissions is not affected by them. Then again if you know what's involved in repairing permissions you would learn that it is simply a matter of reading information on a file and comparing it to the contents of a database. If there's a difference then fix the file information in the directory. This is not an operation that requires one to quit all open programs because the program data are not involved in the repair process. And having done this for 20 years I know there isn't a problem.
Hopefully you're now convinced it's OK.

  • Repair permissions with disk utility

I have tried all the suggestions about permissions repair and have recently reinstalled the combo upgrade to x.5.2 twice. I am still unable to repair permissions with the disk utility. It stalls at one minute for 20 minutes and completes after at least an hour repeating the usual messages, as reported in other posts,

Another possibility... the first time I ran Disk Utility after the upgrade it ran easily for an hour before finishing. Now it takes a few minutes, with the usual "ACL found not found" garbage.
Try leaving your computer on overnight. Most of the Cocktail functions replicate the standard Mac clean up functions that occur in the early hours of the morning. The next day, restart, run Disk Utility - Verify. If that comes up clean, try Permissions again. Let it run until it finishes even if that is well over an hour. BTW... make sure that your machine is updated to 10.5.2, disconnect any external drives, USB or Firewire devices and make sure that there are no programs open. You may even have to check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items to see if something is running in the background that can be temporarily turned off.

  • HT2963 When I repair permissions, get one reading that can't be repaired.  "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired."  What does this mean?

When I repair permissions in disk untilities, I get one result that cannot be repaired:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
I recently had a new hard drive installed by Apple, after mine failed.  The permissions seem to get out of whack quite often, and I get the message above.
Can you please tell me what may be going on?
