Slim Keyboard special keys non-functional

Picked up one of the awesome new keyboards tonight, installed keyboard update, rebooted, but the special keys (itunes, dashboard, etc) don't work.
I can assign fn-key to say dashboard, that works, but in non-fn key mode, they do nothing.
Any ideas?

I have the same issue. Basically, after installing "Keyboard Update 1.1" the special keys above F1-F4 (Brightness, Expose and Dashboard) do not work. I have the keyboard plugged into a MacBook Pro and I expected the brightness keys to change the brightness on the MacBook Pro LCD. The iTunes play/pause and the volume keys work fine, but the previously mentioned ones do not.
You should not have to change the keyboard shortcuts (keyboard pref pane) to get this to work, because if you do, then when you unplug the keyboard (as laptop users do frequently) the buttons will be off compared to the laptop keyboard.
I went into the store today to find out if anyone has noticed this, and all the keyboards attached to the new iMac machines work fine. This must be something with the MacBook Pro's

  • Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard: Special Keys Don't Work

The keyboard has function keys that are programmed to perform special operations. The Apple website explicitly states:
“The extended layout has a full complement of keys, including document navigation controls, a numeric keypad, and special function keys for Mac features such as brightness, volume, eject, play/pause, Exposé, and more.”
Unfortunately, two of these keys don’t work, even after a special software update is installed:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/keyboardsoftwareupdate11.html
The manual that comes with the keyboard provides instructions on how to program the keyboard, but those instructions either don’t work or are incorrect.
I've posted more about this and other keyboard issues here:
    http://web.mac.com/resourcesforlife/journal/writings/Entries/2007/8/21Apple_Aluminum_WiredKeyboard.html

I am using a PowerMac Dual 2.5 GHz G5 system and had trouble with the F3 and F4 function keys. The various suggestions and instructions as provided on several of the discussion threads didn't work for me.
Here's what worked for me to resolve the problem:
    1. Go here and download the Pacifist utility which helps in exploring installation packages:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743
    2. Go here and download the Apple OSX update for PowerPC:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdateppc.html
OR... get the version for Intel found here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx10410comboupdatev11intel.html
    3. Using the Pacifist utility, open the OSX Update dmg file you just downloaded. You will be able to navigate to /System/Library/Core Services. Click on Dock.app and click the install button. When it's uncompressed, it will ask if you would like to update or replace. Click replace. There is an option to repeat this response for all files. Complete the process and then exit the Pacifist utility program.
    4. Go here and download the Apple Keyboard Software Update:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/firmware_hardware/keyboardsoftwareup date11.html
    5. Install the Keyboard update and all functions should automatically work.
If the above steps resolve the problem for you, please click on the "Solved" button above. Thanks.

  • My A1243 keyboard special keys don't function

I have a Mac Pro and I just switched out my old wired keyboard (the one with the clear plastic casing) for the newer A1243 model, all sleek and aluminum and stuff. This includes the special functions for the function keys (volume control, expose, spaces, etc.) However, these don't work. They still do what I set them to do (F12 is dashboard, F11 All windows Exposé, etc.). And, before you say it, I've checked system preferences, and the box next to "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is UNCHECKED. This isn't too much of a problem, except that I currently can't change my volume from the keyboard. Any way to solve the problem? Happy to give more info.

Alright, so assuming that for whatever reason there's no way I can make the Volume keys on my keyboard work to change the volume. How can I assign the unassigned function keys (so, f16, 17, 18, and 19) to be increase volume, decrease volume, and mute? I've found in the "Keyboard SHortcuts" section of the Keyboard and Mouse preference pane where you can assign new shortcuts, but I need the "exact name of the menu command" in order to do so. What can I put in there to be able to change the volume? I've tried "Increase Volume" "Increase System Volume" and "Mute" to no effect.
    Thanks.

  • HT3226 keyboard problems: space bar/ forward and backward keys non functioning

I have a iMac and bluetooth keyboard  purchased last year.
Yesterday my keyboard demonstrated the above problems.
    All other keys work perfectly.
I have checked that my keyboard has been paired with iMac and is connected. Battery condition good.
Can any in the Apple Support Communities help me please?

If you have access to a USB keyboard to test that the system is responding properly and it does, then your keyboard broke.

  • All keyboard shortcut keys not functioning

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place for this...
I have installed OSX 10.6, everything runs great...but I cannot use any shortcut keys, not even the simple select and copy functions work. I can still do these things through the edit menu, but it's a pain!
I have checked the keyboard information under systems preferences and everything seems normal.
Any help and or advice greatly appreciated!

You may have more luck getting a response in the Using Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard forum.

  • 8330 keys non-functional

    Greetings,
I'm a new user to these Blackberry's (berries?), and I have a problem that must be corrected.
Here is how it happened.  I am a recreational cyclist, a college student and a pilot in training, and when I go cycling alone, I take my phone with me, in the event of an accident, ect.  I was told that my 8330 would be able to withstand ambient moisture, i.e. sweat, while in the jersey pocket.  Unfortunately, yesterdays ride seem to have been the killing blow, and now, not a single key works on the phone.  The mute button, camera, blackberry, call/exit, back, or trackball click, or anything on the keypad will not work at all.  The trackball works, but not the clicking function.
I have performed a hard restart by removing the battery a number of times, but this has yet to work.  I'm tempted to take a hair dryer to it, in the hopes of evaporating any moisture possibly still present.
Since my cellphone providers store is not open (it's sunday), otherwise, I will have gone there to get it looked at, what are some of my other options?
I thought about using the memory wipe process, with backing up the info on the computer with the blackberry program, but I'm to nervous to try it out.
Other suggestions?  I really need this thing to work.
    Thanks,
    SaabPilot
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, I put the hairdryer to it, with no avail.  I do have insurance on the phone, thank God, but this is definitely something that I'm disappointed in the BB with.  I went cycling lots of time during the summer (summer=more sweat), and my last phone functioned just fine, until I damaged the screen somehow.  For something that is used extensively by US government officials, Fortune 500 companies and other bigwigs of global industry, and tons of college students, I find it disappointing and disconcerting that such a device is ruined by the possibility of an amateur cyclists' sweat.
So is a direct replacement the only solution to this problem?  I've only had it since September of this year!
I guess I need to put it in a plastic sack from now on, and get a better holster as well.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard brightness keys not functioning since 10.8.4

    Hey all,
since the new update, I've been experiencing several malfunctions, among which the two brightness keys on the Apple Wireless Keyboard. Every other key seems to be working as usual.
I tried resetting the P-Ram, but nothing changed.
    Any hints?
    Thanks,
    Z
    Setup:
MacBook Pro 13", Apple Thunderbolt Display, Apple Wireless Keyboard, Apple Trackpad

    Reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, reinstall OS X 10.8.4 through the Combo edition > http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1659 This will reinstall everything which was updated in 10.8.4, so it should fix this issue

  • Special keys/buttons on enhanced HP keyboard no longer do anything

The special keys/buttons on my keyboard no longer do anything. ALL ,except for the Mute and Volume Up/Down buttons, do nothing when pressed. The Eject 1 and Eject 2 buttons used to Open/Close upper and lower the drive trays, but now do not.  I tried downloading the drivers from teh HP website but they are older than the ones I got with the computer. I tried installing them anyways but the install keeps crashing with error "If (OSLangDec=="1028" || OSLangDec=="2052" || OSLangDec=="3076") Then".
Any idea why these special keyboard buttons are non-functional at this point?

Hi mikenowo, sry I haven't got any more ideas on this one.
In an effort to bump this back up toward the top of the list, here's a couple more questions for you:  Is ur Vista current with updates i.e. SP1 and/or SP2?  And have you, by chance, disabled the "kbd" services from start up?  (KBD.exe runs the special buttons on the keyboard.  Needs to have a check mark next to it, like this.)
And an observation:  I googled ur error message and, from my brief survey, this oslangdec thing appears to be an hp specific issue with windows operating systems, both xp and vista, a compatability/emulation conflict of some type?  I even found one thread where someone posted a pic almost identical to the one u posted.   Here's the link to that forum thread.   And here's the pic *he* posted (almost two yrs ago).  You will see in that thread that he's not even talking about keyboards; he is having a problem with audio drivers.   This tells me that the problem is not specific to the keyboard driver - but to certain 3rd party driver installation in general?  Unfortuantely noone every followed up with any solution either in this thread or any others I found.  But I bring it up now in case someone else in these forums has any idears.
    Good luck.

  • Keyboard's key repeat feature doesn't work in Audition

For Audition CS6, I've reassigned zoom-in and -out to the keys "R" and "T" (like on Pro Tools).  It does zoom.  However, when holding down a key to zoom in or out (R or T), the key repeat function doesn't work.  I don't think the key repeat function works at al within Audition CS6.  Is this so?
My keyboard's keys DO repeat in all other programs though.  I like to zoom in quickly to either the playhead or to the IN or OUT of a selection.  Unfortunately, the end result is a mere one-zoom instance per one key click (down then up)  instead of what our PC/Mac's keyboard's key repeat function could do  (when using Pro Tools): allowing you to zoom in or out quickly by utilizing the computer system's keyboard key repeat function. As it is, I'm much slower having to "tap-tap-tap-tap-tap..." to zoom in and out.  Intolerable!
The mouse scroll wheel DOES zoom in/out smoothly though, oddly enough.

I just checked for the option to "zoom in on the play head," but couldn't
find anything.  I'm on the latest version of CS6 (5.0.2 build 7).  I see
"Synchronize selection, zoom level, and playhead *across files *in the
    Waveform Editor."
I just tried checking and unchecking that, trying it on a single piece of
audio in the Waveform view.  But the scroll wheel zoom feature seems to
have a mind of its own.  I want to always be able to zoom directly to the
playhead*.  *That is, say I zoom out quickly via my scroll wheel.  Great.
That works fast and well.  I go to zoom back in to where the playhead is
moving (playing).  And say, then, my cursor a couple of inches before it in
the full zoomed-out view.  Mouse cursor is in the general area of the
playhead zoomed fully out as I am, but when I scroll back in, it zooms in
not to where the playhead is, but waaaay out in front.

  • Slim Keyboard Sound Functions Now Expose?

    Hi.
I have a Slim Keyboard (Bluetooth) for a MP 10.5.5. One day my sound functions (F10-F12) worked fine but today they (i.e., F10-F12) are now Expose functions. Any thought on what happened and how to fix this? I just want my F10-F12 to be the speaker functions (like the button pictures show).
    Thanks,
    KK

In Keyboard & Mouse Preferences, under Keyboard, be sure the box is checked or unchecked, as the case may be for your requirements, "Use all F1 .... as standard functions keys"

I don't have the same version of OS X here but try System Preferences>Keyboard. Is there an option similar to "Use the F1, etc, keys as standard function keys"?
If so, and it has a checkmark, uncheck it & see if that does the trick.

  • New wired keyboard, swapped key functionality?

    hi -
I just replaced my keyboard for my iMac Intel Core Duo 10.6.8, 2GHz with the standard wired one. The aluminum keyboard is v 0.74, Apple made. The orignal died.
I used a Dell board for a bit, and used Sys Prefs > Keyboard to swap the OPT & CMD keys. Now I have a new wired Apple keyboard, and the system won't recognize it as an Apple board, and the OPT / CMD keys will not return to heir original roles.
    I did these things:
    1) sys prefs: reset default for keyboard command keys
    2) sys prefs: swapped OPT & CMD key functions, didn't respond.
    3) repaired disk permissions
I don't know what to toss as preferences that will influence the keyboard.
    Any suggestions, please?
    thanks.

thanks, but it didn't change anything.
I've also tried restarting after removing the system preference .plist as well as the keyboard layout .plist. Neither of these worked.
I tried swapping out the keyboard and mouse with a friend's and that did not change anything.
I've updated all OS software and repaired all permissions using Disk Utility.
Perhaps something is creating a conflict, but I haven't a clue as to what at this point.

  • Is non-functioning key repair possible and practical?

I have a 2008 MacAir. The shift key on the right side and the return key either don't work or don't work reliably. Is it possible and practical to have them fixed?

The device does report a IP address, and the 'Internet' indicator lights solid, but it appears that it cannot communicate out.  The Power LED blinks three times, repeated, indicating that it cannot connect to the Vonage server.
Linksys EasyLink Advisor does not detect it being on the network.
I also contacted Vonage Support, and they declared that my device is 'non-functional', so I am proceeding with a new device.
    Thanks for your help!
