Slim "restart" after ctl_alt_bksp desktop exit refuses to work...

I've tried adding the following to /etc/inittab:
x:5:respawn:/usr/bin/slim >& /dev/null
as the wiki says, but SLiM will not restart after exiting the desktop via ctl/alt/bksp.
I get a blank screen with a mouse cursor, but nothing seems to actually be working in said screen... I made sure to remove SLiM from the daemon array before adding it to innttab... but it doesn't seem to work with inittab, unless the actual code needs to be updated now...  I'd like to further troubleshoot this if no one has successfully gotten SLiM to work in this method.  Just ask me for more info and I will gladly post whatever is needed.  I'm not sure what other info would be needed at this point so i ask the community to question me so I can properly flesh this problem out and be done with it.

I am fairly familiar with SLiM... I helped one of the devs over at Unity Linux create a custom configuration for it and I've tweaked a few themes for it...  I'll take it out of the daemon array again and check to see if it's running on my next reboot... This issue has only happened so far on Arch Linux... never experienced it on PCLinuxOS, Unity Linux of Mint... so I'm not sure what the issue is ATM... sincerely hoping to figure it out though... I wanna continue playing with Arch...

  • Desktop sharing refuses to work.

I switched from iPhoto to Aperture 3 and found out that the Desktop sharing does not work. The Aperture library and project structure does show in the Desktop section of the System Prefs, but none of the actual files are there. I did repair Aperture permissions etc., and of course in the Aperture prefs I allow sharing with iLife. All my photos have previews (which I made to be same size as my screen). I am surprised by this lack of integration between Apple products. Any advice?

    Hi,
I am running out of ideas and need more clues
How did you import from iPhoto? Is your library referenced or managed? Did you leave the master files inside iPhoto? Is your library located in a shared folder - that may cause problems.
Can other iLife applications see the Aperture images (Pages, iWeb) or does the problem occur with all applications?
Is it restricted to your main user account or does it work from other accounts? e.g. the Guest account?
Is it restricted to your main user library, or can you see the images in the Media Browser, if you create a small test library?
    Cheers
    Léonie
P.S. added: Did you install anything else lately, that might have modified the iLife frameworks?
I imported the 17,500 pics from iPhoto by moving everything into the Aperture library, after a clean install of Aperture 3 and update to 3.2.2. I then emptied the iPhoto library from within iPhoto. The Aperture library is inside the Pictures folder.
Re other iLife apps: I fired up Keynote and here's what happens --- it sees the Aperture library structure hierarchy, but only shows movies --- none of the stills. Importing a movie into Keynote works fine!
I don't have a guest account on my laptop.
As you suggested, I created a small new library (with 8 pics), then exited Aperture. When I went to System Prefs then, I could see it and use its images for desktop!! However, when I reopened Aperture and switched back to the big library, it was back to the old problem: I see all the projects and folders, but no pics.
I have not installed anything else after installing Aperture.
Thanks again for taking time to help me out!!

  • I have recently re-built my PC and downloaded Firefox again. I have appeared to have done this successfully, but the desktop icon refuses to work. I have tried opening firefox from everywhere on my pc. Do i need to turn on anything to get this to work?

Other info....My OS is windows Vista. I can give you full spec of PC, however not sure that will help here. The desk top icon that appears after downloading Firefox 5 appears to be dead when i double click it. I do not get an egg timer or anything. I have tried to access this through programme files but it does the same.

Thanks.  I have followed all the instructions as recommended and nothing has worked so it looks like the restore/update may have been interrupted - would loss of internet connection do this?
Yes it would, possibly even brick it.
Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.
Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data.  Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!
Good luck, but if you expect miracle from that call good luck again.

  • Hello! i downloaded OS X Mavericks on my mac .since then my computer didn't restart properly. My desktop image doesn't appear after logging in and i'm unable to shut it down.

Hello! I downloaded OS X Mavericks on my Mac and my pc didn't restart properly.my desktop image doesn't appear and i can't shut down my pc. what can i do ?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
☞ When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

Ok, I was able to workaround parts of the bug:
I changed slim.conf and and set daemon = true (so slim runs as a daemon). Furthermore changed the slim.service file for systemd:
    [Service]
    Type = forking
    PIDFile = /var/lock/slim.lock
    ExecStart=/usr/bin/slim
Now I can log in and out as often as I want. Seems to work. However, nm-applet only shows up in odd numbers of logins:
    1st login --> nm-applet is shown
2nd login --> nm-applet is not shown (but running --> htop)
    3rd login --> nm-applet is shown
4th login --> nm-applet is not shown (but running --> htop)
    ...and so on...
I search the web, it seems to be a problem with dbus and the order how the services get started. Don't know if that is true...any ideas from anyone?

  • Slim freezes after entering login information

I have a strange problem with Slim. I've used it for a while and everything has always worked fine (indeed, a different computer with similar setup is still fine), but two weeks ago I couldn't log in. The problem did not develop after an update of slim. I haven't found any similar symptoms described in the forums or wiki.
I start slim through the inittab method, and I usually boot into awesome, but sometimes into openbox, so I followed the instructions for setting up slim for multiple environments. Booting into either worked fine previously.
Now when booting, I can get to slim fine. If I immediately enter my user info and then hit "enter" to start the default WM (which is awesome), then slim just freezes. The user and password box disappear, but the background remains, and nothing else happens. I need to use ctl-alt-F1 to login again from tty and reboot. The strange thing is that if after booting, I enter my user info into slim and then hit "F1" then I can select awesome and boot normally. But just hitting enter after user and password (which should boot the default WM, which is awesome) without selecting awesome from F1 causes the freeze. Also, if I use F1 to select openbox, I get the same freeze.
I have tried modifying my .xinitrc just to open awesome rather than using the multiple-environment setup (see below), and with this .xinitrc, I still got the freezing problem, but obviously couldn't get around it by using F1.
Finally, if I get into awesome using the F1 method and then logout of awesome to go back to slim, then logging in to either awesome without hitting F1 or even logging in to openbox work fine. Very strange.
My slim.log has absolutely nothing useful in it. Here are the last lines from the last 7 boots (the ones where it says "Slim: unexpected signal 15" are the ones where I had to use tty to reboot, the others are where I've booted successfully).
slim: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections.

Here's my .xinitrc. When testing whether the multiple-environment setup was the problem, I commented everything except the last line (which I uncommented) and still had the same problem.

I'm having a very similar problem.   My post is in the newbie corner forum.  So far, I have not found a solution.

I solved my problem - slim was not the last daemon I started in rc.conf.  By moving it to the end, I get password auto-focus and everything works.
    Now my rc.conf looks like
    # DAEMONS
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus acpid @network @wicd @openntpd @cupsd @crond slim)
I found this recommendation in the Display Manager wiki page while researching the problem:
Ensure you start the display manager last in the DAEMONS array, otherwise X will later allocate a tty device which was previously claimed by Getty (see /etc/inittab). Not placing the display manager at the end can cause X crashes, and is therefore unsupported.
I'd just been lucky before that there wasn't a conflict.
There is a "flicker" during login where I'm shown the XFCE splash, then the SLIM splash again, then the XFCE desktop.  Not sure what's going on there, but it's no big deal.

  • Not able to recover and restore Lenovo V100 ; restarts after hanging at line mup.sys in safe mode.

Not able to recover and restore Lenovo V100 (WinXP professional) ; restarts after hanging at line mup.sys in safe mode.
Problem started occurring suddenly after restart of the laptop.
Windows XP start page (With dots moving) came up and I tried to restart the laptop in Safe mode.
It stopped at a line mup.sys and after a while restarted automatically.
Tried with inbuilt lenovo recovery and restore option.. but in vain...
each screen is very very slow.. I tried patiently (With restore back to factory settings options) but finally I got message that restore failed.
Can any body please help to me to resolve the Issue. I'm new to Tokyo and dont know any servicing center here :-(...
Any body from Tokyo ? can you tell me where the service center is here in Shinagawa?
    Thanks in Advance....

  • OS 8.6 won't quit or restart after hard shutdown

While testing a G3 266MHz beige mini tower running OS 8.6, the system hung and refused to shut down even when the power button was pressed and held, so I literally had to pull the plug. The operation it hung on was opening a folder containing a large number of files (several thousand) on a mounted volume from an OS 10.4.8 machine. Disk utility and DiskWarrior reported no damage after restarting the machine, however the machine now seems to have a problem: it refuses to shut down or restart from "Special" menu and still refuses to turn off from the power button. I can change the startup disk to a utility volume and run repairs from it, which I just did even though no damage reported, but when booted from the original disk problem is still there. Any ideas as to what's causing this behavior?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

Seems to be working OK after several restarts from utility volume. Maybe "auto restart after power failure" in Energy saver server settings had something to do with it.

  • MBP only restarts after rest

    Folks,
I'm re-posting this here from another thread in the hope that I'll get a better response. It's a compilation of my observations to date.
    Situation:
My MBP has begun to refuse to start on first attempt. This AM it started fine. I then shut it down & tried again a few minutes later. Nothing. Would not restart.
I removed the battery/mag-safe & held the power button down for 5 seconds. I also cleared the PRAM. Yesterday I tried holding the power button down while inserting the power cord. It started. Today I could not replicate this. However, after about 10 tries it finally turned on. Battery is fully charged.
Once booted it runs perfectly. Yesterday, just in case, I made an image of both my Mac & BootCamp partitions. No problem.
This has me stumped. Bad power switch? Loose power switch connection? I'm perfectly willing to fix this myself if somebody can point me in the right direction.
    Update:
I went to my local Apple Store & spoke with one of their techs. Very professional.
He suggested I replace the upper case. I can do that.
However, after I came home I had a thought (rare enough), so I tried a little experiment. I discovered that, if I leave the machine off for 18 minutes or more, it starts just fine. Every time.
Could this be a temperature/heat related matter? And, if so, what could the heat be affecting??
    Update #2:
I haven't heard a word from anyone as to the possible cause of this phenomenon; except to try installing a new $300 upper case.
I'm becoming concerned that I may have no choice but to ship this rig back to Apple. I'd hate to do that. I don't want to be without it for the weeks it would take to maybe find the problem & maybe fix it. I'll fix it myself, if only I can isolate the culprit.
So, here's what I've done since the last entry:
1.) I timed how long it takes for it to "recover" so that it will power up after being shut down. It was between 18 & 20 minutes.
2.) I ran Tech Tool Pro 4. It passed every test, including memory.
3.) CPU temp at rest is somewhere around low 40's to mid 50's Celsius. That's about 5 degrees higher than my new iMac at work, but this is a Core Duo MBP & they tend to run warm.
4.) I ran Software Update last night. It updated and rebooted fine. But, that didn't involve using the power button.
My next test will be to see if it will do a hard shut down immediately after boot; before the unit has had a chance to get hot. But, hopefully someone will have a suggestion in the meantime.
    Update #3:
This AM I pressed the power button & started the boot process. I then, after about 15 second pressed & held the button down to see if it would power down. It did.
I then rebooted & allowed it to fully load. Then, after about 2 minutes, I tried a hard shutdown. No go.
Therefore, it would seem that either heat, or some "full" electrical charge (?) is preventing the power button shutdown or startup after it has been allowed to completely boot.
After about 20 minutes, after the heat or charge has dissipated, it works just fine.
If I have to send this machine to Apple so be it. But, my growing concern is that this problem is so obscure that I might be without my computer for a considerable period of time.
At this point any and all comments are more than welcome. I'm desperate.
    Thanks,
    Jack

    S.U. &/or anyone else,
O.K., I'm back to square one.
    History:
1.) I discovered that my MBP would only restart after a rest period of somewhere around 20 minutes. I assumed a heat/power button issue. My local Apple Store tech suggested that upper case needed replacement.
2.) On a whim If discovered that if I pressed the TYGH keys fairly hard the machine would restart immediately, without the waiting period mentioned in #1 above. Since the keyboard cable to logic board connector is right under these keys I assumed that the connector was loose. I ordered some Kapton tape and planned to reseat the keyboard connector and retape it more securely.
3.) While waiting for the tape to arrive I kept using the TYGH key combo if I needed a fast resart. But, after 2-3 days of doing this I noticed that it didn't always immediately work; that I would need to repeat the process. Then after the machine booted I noticed that some keys began to refuse to work. If I pressed randomly around the board eventually they would come to life, but not always stay alive. It seemed to be getting worse, so to prevent further damage I retired the MBP & grabbed my old iBook G3.
4.) The tape arrived. Yesterday I opened the case, examine the keyboard cable plug & logic board socket under a magnifier. Both looked undamaged. I then reseated the connector and taped it down securely. Everything looked perfect.
5.) I reassembled the machine, slowly & carefully. I then pushed the power button. Nothing. So, I tried the TYGH combo. The machine started. But, many keys refused to work.
So, here is where it stands. I'm going to assume that I have a keyboard or keyboard cable malfunction; not a power button problem.
Question: I'll get a keyboard from iFixit & install myself if the general consensus is that the keyboard is the problem. But, does the keyboard come with the cable? I see no reason to replace the upper case, since it doesn't come with the keyboard, only the power button & trackpad. and, that doesn't seem to be the problem.
Any further suggestion in this situation are more than welcome.

  • I-Tunes Auto-Restart After Closing Program

My i-Tunes began automatically restarting when I close the window on my desktop. It is pretty annoying.
It only restarts after I have had it open. If I have not opened i-tunes it behaves. But, if I open i-Tunes to listen to music on by desktop, and then close the program when I am done, it will restart within 10-seconds.
    I am using Windows 7  and i-Tunes 10.2.2.12
I can't find a solution and sfter 15-minutes of trying to find a link to submit a help request, I gave up and am trying this avenue.
    Thanks

PS: In the Product selection below, i-Tunes is not one of them. Hope this gets where it needs to go.

Yes. FATFS.NLM tries to mount all FAT partitions it finds, not just the
boot partition. So any problem FAT partition may cause trouble.
    >I tried the "FORMAT D: /s /x" command but it display the "Bad track in

This sounds like your disk is physically broken. As a short term solution,
you can probably delete the DOS partition on D: but not create it again.
That way, FATFS.NLM will not try to fix the broken part of your disk. Of
course, you should as soon as possible replace your disk.
For this, you should first create and copy your DOS partition manually on
the new disk and then start your server and use NSSMU.NLM to manage the
    mirroring of the NetWare partition(s).

  • Apache2 crashes on restart after enabling ssl

I do not undestand very well this log. I think the problem come from the library libapr-1.0, which is a symbolic link to:
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 578656 Nov 19 22:28 libapr-1.0.2.7.dylib

    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 20 May 19 2009 libapr-1.dylib -> libapr-1.0.2.7.dylib
And the Apache log for information (after redisabling ssl):
[Fri Nov 20 11:13:47 2009] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
    [Fri Nov 20 11:14:31 2009] [notice] Apache/2.2.13 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.2.13 OpenSSL/0.9.7l DAV/2 PHP/5.2.11 configured -- resumin

I have tried some manipulations to resolve this problem but with no success. I have also searched on Apple support and the Internet and I have found nothing about this or a similar problem.
    Any Idea?
    Thanks in advance.

Similar problem here. I installed the latest security update via software update. It rebooted twice and then the Aqua "starting Mac OS X" splash screen appears, the progress bar jumps to 100% very quickly and then the system goes into what looks like sleep mode (the power buttons dim like when it's asleep). It won't wake up after that or restart by holding the power button. Have to unplug it!
At first, I tried a couple times using the OPT key to try and boot from another disk and it ignored it and went to sleep as above. Then, I tried using the SHIFT key to try and boot into safe mode and the screen stayed black and it didn't seem to be doing anything. After that, I tried OPT again and it booted successfully. Now it seems to be booting normally again. Try booting with SHIFT key held down and then reboot normally to see if that works.
This is very, very bad. I am afraid.

  • IMac G4 will not restart after OS X 10.4.6 upgrade

I have manually upgraded my iMac G4 with downloaded upgrades from 10.4.1 up to 10.4.6 PPC. Each upgrade I sucessfully restarted the computer. After the 10.4.6 upgrade the computer now comes up with the grey/blue screen with the apple image in the centre and the little circle of lines going around ... endlessly!!
Does anyone have any suggestions. I know the remaining memory space is low.

    Hi there...
Well, you need to make free space on the computer's hard disk drive.
And it would help if you could get that large 10.4.11 Combo download
and then consider wiping everything off the computer so as to install
a fresh new complete system on a zeroed and reformatted hard disk
drive. An archive of all the stuff in your computer, to an external would
be a plus. A clone could be helpful, so as to contain all the stuff at once.
But you are a bit beyond that at this point... prevention is always best!
Between software updates, upgrades, installs; etc. it is good to restart
the computer (as it will prompt you to, and you often have little choice)
and also run 'repair disk permissions' from the System's Disk Utility.
Each time. Often, I restart a computer or start it up, and hold the Shift
key down in order to get it to SafeBoot. Then log in, and choose Disk
Utility in the Utilities folder, from GO in the Finder menu. Launch D.U.
and choose 'repair disk permissions' and after it runs, quit that & restart.
At this time, you may need to see if you can start up the computer from
the Mac OS X 10.4 installer disc and in the second Installer screen,
when a main Installer Menu bar appears, choose from the top bar to
get Utilities, and run Disk Utility from there. Run 'repair disk' until you
get a clean report; and then run 'repair disk permissions' too. Then
you can also see if SMART reports the status of the hard disk drive
as pass or satisfactory, or some bad message indicating failure.
Exit Disk Utility (in the booted 10.4 installer's disc) and choose from
the same menu in the header's menubar to select Startup Disk; use
this to try and see if the computer's system can run the computer.
At this point, I've also invoked SafeBoot and when the computer
finally restarts (after using utility from boot disc) and again use the
Disk Utility on the computer's system to 'repair disk permissions'
and then quit D.U. and restart again. You can remove the boot
installer disc any time possible, once you are done trying to repair
the hard disk drive and the basic permissions. A mouse-button held
on startup can force that Installer disc out.
Hopefully these ideas, out of sequence a little, aren't confusing.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Mac Pro Mid 2010 keeps restarting after installing OSX Mavericks

    Hello,
my Mac Pro Mid 2010 started quitting and restarting after installing the Mavericks OSX. I was thinking about wiping out the drive and reinstalling OS X Mountain Lion but thought I should see if anyone else is experiencing these issues before going that route.
It just intermittently restarts and it tries to restart multiple times before it will actually start up again. It's not issuing a crash report. It just quits out and restarts. It started doing this just at initial startup. It now will quit and restart at any given time and it will take multiple times attempting to start before it actually starts up. I've even had to shut it down because it would going through that startup sequence without starting. No perceivable pattern as to why this is occurring. No specific programs that it occurs in. The only thing I know for certain is that it started happening after installing Mavericks OSX – OSX Mountain Lion was fine. I also made sure to unistall Mountain Lion before installing Mavericks with those potential issues of trying to install one operating system over another. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Specs for Mac Pro Mid 2010:
    - 2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    - 14 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
    - ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
    - OS X 10.9.2

    Hello Linc,
I followed your instructions. I have information for the BOOT_TIME and for SYSTEM DIAGNOSTICS sections. I've included all within one post with heading separators between the two sections. I wasn't sure if you needed this posted as two separate posts or not. If this isn't correct, please let me know and I'll do again. Hopefully I didn't pull too much content for the BOOT_TIME section. I was trying to search for enough diverse content that would clearly represent what might be occurring. It was also challenging to choose content for the BOOT_TIME section though because there was no time-stamped content close to the time of BOOT_TIME time stamp. The last time I restarted my system was hours before I attempted your exercise. And, I haven't experienced "crashing"  more than it just automatically restarts in the middle of things. I wonder if that's why there were no .crash reports? There was only a list of .panic reports so that's what I provided. Thanks for your help Linc.
