Slim + Systemd requires restarting as root?

Hello!
When I boot up and in to Slim using systemd, logging in yields nothing. I don't even think it runs my .xinitrc, or the login_cmd for that matter. Running 'sudo killall slim && sudo slim' in a tty kind of fixes it but leaves me without consolekit. Anybody else have this problem?

I believe [at least in my case] this was a problem of my own making.  Knowing that systemd started at 'pid 1' in place of init, it assumes control over virtually everything.  Had to enable slim.service manually, I also thought I would have to make references to console-kit-daemon in /etc/systemd/system.  That apparently is too much.  AFAIK slim gets permission from systemd to manage console-kit without any further assistance.
@Jookia : what is output of systemctl | grep console- ?
Does /etc/systemd/system/slim.service exist?
Is there a link in /etc/systemd/system/graphical.target.wants to slim.service in /usr/lib/systemd/system ?
There should be no references to console-kit.

  • Iphone mail app regularly requires restart to get mail flowing???

Anyone seeing this issue?  Advice re how to fix?
My iphone mail app regularly requires restart to get mail flowing.  That is it is running (doesn't crash) but will at time just stop getting email updates.  I then have to force close the mail app (i.e. kill it) and then restart it.  After restarting it the mail flows again.
    Notes:
    a) I do connect to Gmail for my mail - I'm using the IMAP facility for gmail currently (i.e. not the "Exchange" method)
    b) I do also have the Google "Gmail" app running on my device too
    c) on iPhone 3GS, latest version of IOS

I have this same problem too.  I have both a hotmail and work Microsoft Exchange account setup on my iPhone and have intermitent issues with both.  Sometimes the hotmail push works, but my work email doesn't push, other times it's backwards, and sometimes neither work.  I can't figure it out.  Usually restarting the app (closing out of the multitasking bar), and/or going into settings and disabling the affected mail account works.  And to top it, I have an iPad, I'll hear the mail chime go off on my iPad, expecting it to go off on my phone....and it never does, not until I manually fetch it.
    Very frustrating.

  • Powerbook Requires Restart Often

My 15" powerbook has been having problems for about a month. When I start it up, the screen freezes and has a message to hold down the power button for several seconds to shut down and restart my computer. Then, if I wake it up from sleeping or start it the first time in the morning, the mouse gets stuck and will hardly move. I have to then shut off my computer and restart it. Then the mouse works fine.
I don't have apple care and the powerbook is about 1 1/2 yrs. old. I don't have a lot saved on it--just photos and music. No big files.
Any suggestions would help. I did try to clear out the PRAM, following instructions from another person having another problem. That slowed down the frequency of required "restarts" but it hasn't solved it.

  • Commit changes at deadline or during a maintenance window (requires restarts)?

What happens in an application deployment if I uncheck "Commit changes at deadline or during a maintenance window (requires restarts)"?  If I have an application deployed to a collection with a maintenance window with a scheduled to be available
now with an installation deadline of one week, what would happed?  What about if the application was deployed to a collection that did not have a maintenance window and there were no maintenance windows defined in any other collection the member clients
    were in?

This is for Embdedded devices, like ThinClients.
That means write filter commits either at deadline or during a maintenance window.
Your application still installs as you schedule it, available now and install week from now. If you have maintenance window and selected to not install or reboot outside of maintenance window, then everything happens within maintenance window. If you don't
check that box for write filter, then your app or setting you have just pushed does not get saved when device is rebooted.
Same scenario with no maintenance windows. If you don't have maintenance window then your app downloads and installs as you schedule the dates. Write filter would not commit these changes and everything would go away after reboot.

  • Bumblebeed requires restart every time to work properly

    Hello all,
I am having an awkward issue with bumblebee. Often it refuses to run due to the following error (systemctl status bumblebeed):
    bumblebeed.service - Bumblebee C Daemon
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/bumblebeed.service; enabled)
Active: active (running) since mer 2013-11-13 07:15:15 CET; 36min ago

The odd thing is that if I restart bumblebee, it usually works perfectly. Then I exit the game and, if I start it again, bumblebeed fails again and I have to restart it again.
    In dmesg I see:

    Anybody has a hint?

OK--then you likely have a different graphics chip. But you could still have an intermittently malfunctioning graphics chip.
Have you tried running the extended version of the Apple Hardware test?
Do you get the same graphics artifact on an external display? If so, it would tend to imply a graphics chip problem. If you have good video on an external display, the problem is more likely to be with the internal display or its connections.
And if Apple's repair did not resolve the issue, you may have some recourse with them, depending on how long ago you had the repair done and how long their warranty is on it.
Even though this sounds like a hardware problem to me, it may also be worth reinstalling the OS, just to eliminate the possibility of a software cause.
    Good luck!

  • OS X Updates that Require Restarts

One thing I've been noticing is when you have a OS X update that requires a restart, it finishes installing and then prompts you to either shut down or restart.
My question is . . . . why is there not an option to restart later (or restart my computer when I feel like it)?
Microsoft Windows provides this feature . . . . it's very handy as when I need to do updates I'm right in the middle of doing something, and I can either restart it right then and there or leave Software Update running in the background with that prompt waiting for me to decide.
Just seems odd that Apple has not given that option.

    Hi, Matthew.
There are a variety of reasons why an update could require a restart. For example:
    • The update may replace an application, e.g. QuickTime or Safari, as well as underlying frameworks, kernel extensions, and the like. If you were to launch the application, and it depends on these changes, it would not work as the necessary new bits were not loaded. Necessary kernel extensions are loaded at startup.
    • Kernel extension cache files are also regularly rebuilt as part of the restart following an Update that changes kernel extensions.
    • The installer may have set up a temporary Startup Item that is executed after the restart, and then removed, in order to complete certain installation-related tasks after the Mac OS X Installer has loaded the new software.
To avoid some of the common problems people can encounter after installing Updates, consider the advice in my "Installing Software Updates" FAQ.
If you think the Mac vs. Windows approach is an important issue, I suggest you submit a Mac OS X Feedback.
    Good luck!

  • [SOLVED] Launching systemd service as non-root user

I need to launch a systemd service as a non-root user. I've looked at this but I'm fairly confused. I don't have xorg or any desktop environment installed (this is a remote server I SSH into) but when I run

  • Mac Server VPN Requires Restart When Waking from Sleep

I am running OS 10.9.4 and Server 3.1.2.
I had a L2TP VPN configured and working well.  I suspect the 10.9.4 update caused the following issue.
ISSUE: After waking from sleep, the VPN service requires a restart in order to accept connections.  Clients timeout and receive an error message saying the server is not accepting connections.  A quick OFF/ON toggle in the Server GUI fixes the problem.
Any advice or do I need to wait this one out?

If the server is asleep there is nothing awake to answer the clients VPN connection request. As such there is nothing to fix because you are 'holding it wrong'
The nearest solution is to first issue a 'wake on LAN' packet which wakes a sleeping computer, then once it is awake it should answer the request. Except Wake on LAN is designed to only work locally on the same LAN and is aimed more at waking sleeping client devices not sleeping servers.
As both Strontium90 and myself indicated servers are not designed to sleep. They normally have to be running all the time so they are always ready to answer client requests.
A Mac mini acting as a server especially if you use an SSD drive or perhaps as I suggested limit it to just sleeping the hard drive uses a tiny amount of power. You can turn off the monitor as well.

  • Trivial configuration changes require restart !*#$?

Why do TC's require a complete system restart for trivial configuration changes? Specifically, adding another account to the disk access list seems simple enough that an entire reboot shouldn't be required.
    Chris D.

This has been experience with all wireless routers. Not saying it's normal (I've only owned 4 in the past 6 years) but it's certainly not "Apple only." To be honest, I've found TC reboots to be far quicker than any of my other routers.

  • MacPro requires Restart alot

Ok;   my Mac Pro, INTEL  I bought 4 .5 years ago.  It recently does this-  if I leave the computer for 40 minutes or so...my power button starts blinking..and everything freezes up.  Not even Command/Option/ESCAPE will  'wake up the computer.   I'm required to 'press and hold power button to SHUT down...then, re-start.   Never did this before.   Only the last 6 weeks, and it's annoying. Someone at a Mac store said this could be a 'hardware issue-- is it?      I've done 'disc Utility..and Repair Disc and all that- it's all fine. But WHY the restart constantly?? thanks! L in NYC    oh btw; I'm on Snow Leapord  11. something.

You ran the full AHT test and the probelm didn't appear while running it?  Do I assume then it took less than your 30 minutes to run AHT?  Is that a "reliable" 30 minutes? If so perhaps wait long enough before starting the test (answering its prompts) so that the tests are running across that 30 minute mark.
Maybe something is overheating.  You might want to add one of the temperature monitor utilities.
    Hardware Monitor
    iStat Menus
    Temperature Monitor
    iStat Pro
iStat Menus and Hardware Monitor is particularly useful in that they will also show you power consumption (watts, volts, amps) of various components.  If your power supply is going then perhaps these readings would reflect that.  FWIW, my personal preference is IStat Menus.
