Slingbox working with Airport Express but now Back To My Mac broken

I had Back To My Mac working a couple of months ago. I have a Mac Mini connected to a Time Capsule on my Roadrunner cable modem network, and I had a Slingbox Pro (SBP) connected to my DSL Airport Extreme(n) network. I carry a MacBook Air with me on trips.
I wanted to move the DSL Airport Extreme to another room and needed an ethernet connection for the Slingbox, so I bought the Airport Express, plugged it in, and configured it to extend the Roadrunner network. I plugged the SBP into the Airport Express and configured the AE for port forwarding. So my two networks look like this:
Roadrunner ---> Time Capsule ---> Mini (via ethernet), and
Roadrunner ---> Time Capsule ---> Airport Express(n) (wirelessly) ---> SBP (ethernet)
DSL ----> Airport Extreme ----> wireless network 2
Now when the MBA is configured on the Roadrunner wireless network I can see and access the Mini. When I change networks, either using my own DSL network or out of town on a hotel network, the computers cannot see each other and BTMM will not work. Does anyone have any ideas on how I can configure either computer or the network components to get this working again? Thanks. I will also post this in the .Mac forum.

The Slingbox Pro connection works because Slingbox has its own system for keeping track of the WAN IP address of the Time Capsule.
Unless your Time Capsule has an assigned static WAN IP address, you need to set up your own system to do this for the purpose of file sharing from the MBA to the Mac mini from the DSL network or from the Internet. You can use a DNS hosting service such as DynDNS for this purpose. See: http://www.dyndns.com/
You can set up a free account with DynDNS and install client software on your Mac mini that notifies the DynDNS server whenever the WAN IP address on your Time Capsule changes. You assign a static LAN IP address to the Mac mini and forward UDP and TCP port 548 from the Time Capsule to the LAN IP address of the Mac mini.
When you want to file share to the Mac mini, you can use the Connect to Server... function in the Finder using this address (as an example):
afp://xxx.dyndns.info
The DynDNS server converts the "xxx.dyndns.info" placeholder to the current WAN IP address of your Time Capsule, and you end up connecting to the Mac mini—either from the other network or from the Internet.
You also may be able to use the Back to My Mac function with a .Mac account, but I am unfamiliar with it and have never tried to use it.

  • Mac OS X not working with Airport Express but Win XP is ok on the same iMac

    Hello everyone,
as the message says I am having troubles with Airport Express.
To say it quickly, I live in a house share in London, and everyone in the house enjoys the wifi without troubles. I do as well with my macbook from every point of the house.
The troubles are with the big iMac: with mac os the internet signal won't just work at all, pages take minutes to load with both safari and firefox, and most of the times the loading times out.
I thought it was a signal power problem, but the weirdest thing of them all is that... when I switch to Windows XP on the same iMac (and right now I am writing from that!) the internet works perfectly!
Then I switch to mac os again... and slow internet again!
Anyone has an idea of what could this be?
    Many thanks for the support

Yes, I just discovered this problem on my own machine.
I just wanted to check some settings and discovered that the behaviour of the GUI of Server Admin was somewhat "erratic": First this "no services are configured" message. Some of the configured servers were marked with the usual green "up and running" bullet, others dark grey - those were normally configured and running and clicking the appropriate line seemed to force Server Admin to check the actual state and then turned also green. But sometimes configuration pages were "greyed out", or while switching through the tabs Server Admin claimed that where were "unsaved changes" which should be saved (or discarded).
And then SMB: this was light grey, as usual when a service is not running and clicking on it I browsed through the configuration tabs - everything seemed ok (all my settings were correctly shown, configured as PDC with right domain name etc.) - and I started the service. Then suddenly the configuration settings changed to the default settings - no more PDC, but a "standalone server" with workgroup name "WORKGROUP"...
Looks for me, as if Server Admin lost it's "source" file for the configuration (the file in /var/db/smb.conf says, that it is automatically generated -- does somebody were the source file is stored?)...

  • Does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

does airport extreme 802.11a/c work with airport express 802.11n

"You can use the AirPort Express to extend the signal provided by the new AirPort, but the Express will not extend "ac" wireless since it does not have that capability. The Express will extend an "n" wireless signal if that helps."
This is what I am trying to understand.
So AXTRM w/ sep SSID for 2.4 (b/g/n) - call it SSID1 - and 5GHz (ac) call it SSID2 - WiFi Explorer confirms AC mode on 5G.
Using an AXPRESS to extend - I have the option of SSID1 b/g/n *and* the 5GHz ac SSID2 in the pulldown (it sees both?) --> if I select SSID1, it also extends this same SSID in 5GHz (both showing b/g/n) >> so I now have 3 signals on SSID1 (XTRM 2.4G, XPRS 2.4G and XPRS 5G) b/g/n and one signal on SSID2 (XTRM 5G AC) ac
    If I select the 5Ghz ac SSID2 to extend - it prompts me "do you also want to extend (the 2.4GHz SSID1)?" --> select yes and I now have 2 signals for SSID (XTRM 2.4G & XPRS 2.4G) b/g/n and 2 signals on SSID2 (XTRM 5G 802.11ac & XPRS 5G 802.11 a//n)
Is the 5G SSID2 actually being extended from the Airport Extreme to the Express?
The reason I bring this up is I am having a lot of issues since iOS8 came out (especially on iPhone 6). Everything I am reading is pointing to when people have 2 AP's set to use the same SSID. When you walk to a part of the house where 5G 802.11 ac signal marginalizes, the phone does not immediately hand over to the 5G 802.11 a/n Airport Express.
My thought was separate the SSID's but to me, if the Express can't extend 5Ghz from the Extreme, it's taking a step backwards. I am better off getting a more powerful router like an ASUS and going with one AP, drop the WiFi roaming altogether
    Any thoughts?

  • We have a Lexmark Pinnacle Pro901 and cannot get the printer to work with airport express - any suggestions?

Can anyone give us suggestions on how to get our Lexmark Pinnacle Pro 901 to work with airport express? We cannot get airport express to recognize the printer.

Refresh all your devices before reconfiguring printer to connect to your computer.
    a Shutdown computer
b Pull out printer power cord from the socket. Let it stay for at least 30 seconds then plug it back.
c Powercycle your router (unplug your router for at least 30 then plug it back. This will not change the settings of the router. This will just refresh the device)
d Once router is ready , put back brick at the back of the printer to turn it on
    e Wait one minute
    f Turn on computer

  • HP DeskJet F380 won't work with Airport Express

    Hello,
I just purchased a HP DeskJet F380 AIO printer to use with my PBook G4 12". It works fine when connected directly to the PBook through USB, but when I try to use it with Airport Express it won't work. The printer setup utility recognizes the printer as a Bonjour printer but then the specific model won't show up in the pull-down menu. I've tried picking other HP printer models, but when I try to print the printer won't do anything at all. I asked HP support and they basically threw up their hands and gave no assistance.
How can I make this printer work with Airport?
    Thanks!
    PowerBook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Hi and welcome to the Discussions
    Try the process outlined here:
HP Printers (and others) not on compatibility list and Airport Extreme Printing
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1300.html
If the supplied HP driver won't work (and as there are no third party alternatives available) then no it won't work with Airport.

Is your Touch running iOS 5.n? If so, you can administer the AX with the AirPort Utility which you can download directly from the Apple App Store.

  • Speakers that work with airport express?

    Hello all
Can anyone recommend small wall mounted speakers that work with airport express?
    Thanks in advance

I would recommend just about anything from either Bose or Audioengine that are self-powered and provide either analog or digital audio inputs. One example would be the Audioengine A2+ speakers.

I spoke with Apple Support this morning and they believe anything MobileMe related is due to the conversion over to iCloud that's taking place.
As for other email clients, check with your host to see if settings have changed on their end. I use inmotionhosting.com and over the weekend the updated their outgoing requirements so that a password authentication is now needed.
Hope that helps get some on the right path to resolving their issues!

  • Does Apple list available printers that work with AirPort Express?

Just bought an AirPort Express hoping that I could print wirelessly with my HP 1350 All-in-One, and it won't work. Found out after the fact that my printer doesn't support USB wireless printing.
I'm looking for a basic color printer to work with AirPort Express for wireless printing by other family members, and I'll continue to use my HP 1350 with USB for scanning and OCR functions.
Does Apple provide a list of recommended printers that will work with AirPort Express?

    No Apple doesn't any more.
I have been maintaining a community created list.
    http://tech.ifelix.net/1013.html
This is an unofficial list of USB printers which are are compatible with the AirPort Extreme Base Station and Airport Express. Printers in bold have been added to the original list that Apple provided.
Printers in dark red are in fact the only printers I have personally tested.
Please also note that due to changes in the firmware of both the Airport Extreme base station and the introduction of the Airport Express some printers which are in this list may no longer in fact be compatible.

If you have an iPad, you might want to concentrate on printers that are AirPrint compatible, so that you can print from the iPad.
