Slooooooooooooow DSL

No problems until about a week ago.  Takes 2 hours to download something that use to take at most 20 minutes.  Did a speed test (upload 0.142 Mbps) (download 0.148 Mbps) I don't know what that means.  The modem speed is 768 kbps?
The problems started about the time I had to have Verizon support remove and reinstall Security Suite w/McAfee).  I have done virus scans, disk cleanup and internet options clearing.  I have no game console but I do download computer games from Big Fish, but with problems.  While downloading it stops often and I get an Error message.  The modem is a Westell DSL2+ router.

As the Vista computer is working fine...I would suggest you to recheck the Xp computer and disable the firewall and anti-virus on the computer and try...On the router you can try by changing the Wireless channel..Also keep the network mode in mixed mode.

  • DSL modem no longer recognized by computer

I am on dial-up right now, because I can no longer connect to the internet with my Verizon DSL ever since Windows Vista failed to update a driver a couple of weeks ago, during regular Windows Updates. I have done extensive troubleshooting and all the tests boil down to something being wrong with the modem. The modem was working just fine, but now Windows does not recognize the device because it cannot update the drivers. It suggested going to the manufacturer's website. I found an update on the Verizon website, but the computer still does not recognize the modem.
I have a Westell 2110 DSL modem. I downloaded the upgrade from Verizon's website:  B90-210015WebLoad_VER_01_00_35
The computer says I am connected to the internet via Verizon, but I have limited connectivity to the local area connection. Therefore, my computer cannot connect to the internet.
In summary, my computer no longer interfaces with my dsl modem, and yet has failed to update new drivers. Is this an example of Windows Vista not working with old hardware? Is there a way to fix this? Or do I have to buy a new modem? (expensive)
And would it happen with a new modem? I can't use the installation CD that came with the modem because it does not work with Windows Vista.
Please help! I don't want to waste money doing something that doesn't work or won't last.
    Thank you

My DSL modem was doing similar problems and I couldn't figure out why, but one day I had a friend come over with his computer and it worked just fine on his computer. I still haven't found out the cause why my computer that is running vista is not working just that its not vista his computer has vista to. Have you tried another computer? Im no expert in this, but when my computer went out I was downloading the new Verizon Security Suite so I could keep the virus protection they offered. Im not certain that this was my problem but I do think my problem could be the same problem as you.

  • I had a failure of a dsl modem which inturn destroyed my ethernet port of non isight imac G5.  In attempt to solve the problem I did a clean install of leopard 10.5.4. I am unable to upate to 10.6,.7  or .8 without freezing system network preferences

Dsl modem failure caused malfunction of ethernet port.  In attempt to solve problem I did a clean instillation of  Leopard 10.5.4 and then update to 10.5.5 with access to internet through apple usb to ethernet adapter.  If I attempt to update software to 10.5.6, .7 or .8 it freezes my network system preferences and computer will no longer shut down.  The network connection assistant also no longer sees a connection to the internet throught the usb/ethernet adapter.  I have checked they systerm Tech tool deluxe which shows no problems and also used hard drive utility on instillation disk which found no problems.  Permissions were also checked as well and no problems noted.  Any thoughts as I really like my imac G5.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
If all the above fails, then it appears to be time for a relatively painless Archive & Install, which gives you a new/old OS, but can preserve all your files, pics, music, settings, etc., as long as you have plenty of free disk space and no Disk corruption, and is relatively quick & painless...

Just be sure to select Preserve Users & Settings.

  • How do I change my airport extreme from dsl to cable?

I have recently changed my ISP from AT&T dsl to Comcast cable and don't know how to change the settings to my Airport Extreme. Please help.

Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
Click on the AirPort Extreme, then click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the window
Click the Wireless Options tab near the bottom of the window
Select the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels that you want to use
Click Update to save the new settings
Assuming that the AirPort Extreme is functioning correctly, the router will automatically scan to find the best available 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels to use.
It is possible that you might be able to guess as well as the utility, but you may not be able to guess better unless your scanning equipment will reveal "hidden" networks in your area.

  • How do i add my airport extreme to my DSL WIFI Modem to expand my network

I have a DSL MODEM with WIFI. It replaced my Airport Extreme as a router.
How can I use the Airport Extreme in conjunction to expand my wifi service through out my house.
    AIRPORT EXTREME MODELA 1354
    Modem is a Qwest PK5000z
    WPA-WPA2 PERSONAL
    MAC BOOK PRO 2011
    OS 10.9.5

Ok, the Airport Utility Program NOW shows the globe, a green light next to the word internet
below, there is a now a yellow triangle next to AirPort Extreme with an ! in it. """the messase to the right says
Diveic Not Found:Airport Extremem was previously part of your net work Check that is still in range of you network
(it is it's right next to the PK5000) it's plugged in. Forgetting this device removes it from this network."""
    AND NOW
Bob, I can now see where I missed the fact that to do this the Airport had to be Wired_via ethernet,
I was looking for it to be a boost wirelessly, not tethered.
I’m not at liberty to modify the living space I am living in, holes and such and have cable run up exposed.
Again, ignorance on my #1 status. This has been very informative but I do see where I can't accomplish what I wanted to do, have a booster in another room wirelessly.
I think what I need to do is restore the Airport to factory setting and sit on it, not literally.
I can't thank you enough for taking all this time with me. I trust you understand what I wanted and you did your best to provide.
So I guess that's it for now.
I'll look to you in the future, you really know your stuff
All the best to you from MN

  • How do I configure my time capsule to DHCP mode?  I had to replace my DSL router, had a network set up before.

I recently had to replace my DSL router.  My provider, Earthlink, walked me through the setup and I do have internet access if I connect directly to my Mac.  When I tried to use my time capsule, it would not work.  The Earthlink tech said I needed to reconfigure my time capsule to DHCP mode.  I tried the set up manual and could not make sense of it.  My 90 free service is long gone.

and the text in the router mode box came up DHCP and NAT, but the lettering was in a lighter shade than elsewhere and I could not open the drop down box.
You would have had to change some other settings on the AirPort to be able make changes in the drop down Router Mode box.
Your AirPort is already configured as Earthlink suggests.
Try powering off the entire network...all devices....in any order you want
    Wait a few minutes
Start the Earthlink modem first and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Start the Time Capsule and let it run a full minute
Keep starting other devices the same way until everything is powered back up
    Check the network
If still no improvement, I think you need to let Earthlink know that you have done as they asked, and ask for more steps to try.
Hopefully, another Earthlink user will see this post and offer any special information or tips that only they would know.

  • I don't have a DSL or cable modem to access the Internet ... just a mobile WiFi (there is no cable available at our house). How do I connect my Time Capsule to the Internet via the mobile WiFi?

I don't have a DSL or cable modem to access the Internet ... just a mobile WiFi (there is no cable available at our house and the mobile WiFi is our only option). How do I connect my Time Capsule to the Internet via the mobile WiFi?

    LOL!!
I am in Australia and the ISP... I think both the main ones would fit your description to a T.. big T in particular.
Your router is really unsuitable.. if it is only wireless and no ethernet.. just buy an ethernet one.
Do a search on ebay.. 3g router.
But you can get the TC to join a wireless network.
It is a non-standard setup that Apple will not support.. the option is hidden.
If you are on Lion download the 5.6 utility. Go to the wireless set up page and hold down the option key whilst selecting wireless mode.. a new option, join will appear. You can then put in the ssid and passkey of the 3g router.
But please note the end result of this setup..
very slow speed. The TC is now a second wireless hop from your clients.. this will halve the speed.
In this mode the ethernet are deactived.. for reasons only Apple know, they decided you should not use ethernet when doing this.

  • I tried to add sf2 instruments.  I put them in the audio/banks file but they do not show up in the DSL instruments on Garage Band.  Why not?

How can I get sf2 intruments that I've downloaded to use in my GarageBand?  I have downloaded them and have put them both in the GarageBand instruments folder and the Audio/Banks folder of my Library, but they do not show up in GarageBand on the DSL instruments as they should.  I have some instruments in that category that I must have put in before, but can't find them in the audio/banks folder or the GarageBand instruments folder and cannot locate them with a my computer finder anywhere.  They are listed in the DSL instruments on GarageBand when I open the program.  Is there another library that this version of GarageBand can be using??  I have GarageBand '11 (version 6.0.4)d, which was updated a while back.  I had the previous version of GarageBand with a diffent system quite a bit earlier.  I've look in the "previous system" folder as well, and cannot find the instruments, or an audio/banks folder at all.

Mortimer,  iTunes does not know when you restore a file.  After you restore the file, you need to re-add the file to iTunes.
If you know exactly which files you restores, re-add them using File > Add File to LIbrary.
Otherwise, lre-add the folders.  iTunes has certain safeguards to reduce duplicates when you do this, which are not perfect but are better than nothing.  Start with a few small folders and see if you are happy with the results.

  • Internet Outages with DSL Service

    Hello,
Below is my experience over the past month with Verizon and my DSL problems.  If anyone has any ideas on the next path I can take it would be appreciated.
Around mid-May started having problem of internet light going out and being unable to connect to the internet.
May 22nd – A technician, {edited for privacy} came out and tested all connections and wiring to the house.  The light was on during his tests.  Gave the signal an A grade and said things looked great.  He said to try and connect with him when the light went out so he or the right team could run some tests.  We were never able to connect and the following week he was in training for 3 weeks so he advised me to call his supervisor {edited for privacy}.
June 8th - In the meantime scheduled a second service call since the problem was not resolved.  A technician, {edited for privacy}, came to the house.  I informed him of everything to date and he spent about 30 minute at the central box running tests.  He confirmed that he could see a problem in the network / wiring coming from the main office and that the signal was spotty and cutting out.  He said he could not fix it, but that we would pass the information on to the right team and they would be in the field in a day or two to get it resolved.  He also said {edited for privacy} would be the person to speak with if it was not fixed.
June 9th – Received a recorded message that it was fixed, but the issue was still occurring.
June 13th – Was able to contact {edited for privacy} who reviewed the information and that that he would get his “slick” team out on it in the next day or two and that should resolve the problem.  He said he would follow up once there was a plan or resolution but to date have never received a call.
June 15th – June 23rd – Was out of town on vacation.
June 24th – The internet light cut out again.
June 25th – Called Verizon support to request a new modem to see if that was the issue.  In reviewing the case and discussing with the technical team they could confirm that the issue was not resolved and there was a problem in the network.  They said that the issue would be escalated to the network team and would be resolved in 24 to 48 hours. This was the third or fourth time we received the same canned answer to date.

We have not heard a response back on the private support board we have been working with you on. Should you need additional help please create a new post for us to help.

  • Issue with 2wire dsl router when connecting power pc g4 via ethernet

Issue with 2wire dsl router when connecting power pc g4 via ethernet. The 2wire will keep resetting. When I connect my macbook pro via ethernet to the 2wire all is ok, but as soon as i connect the power pc. . . .reset. I have emailed 2wire support. They recommended using a different patch cable. Tried that.. .. anyone else having this issue???? Any help would be appreciated. . .

Search the discussions for issues with 2wire dsl routers. This has come up before in a discussion I've been involved with, but probably not to do with the MDD. I do remember it being a design issue with the router, something that was done to it before dispatch.
Let us know if you can't find it and we'll have a look.
If you afford it, bin the 2wire and go buy something decent like a Netgear.

  • HT4623 I have followed the directions and my iphone is not installing the iOS 7.0.2.  My iphone is plugged into my lap top that has the most recent version of itunes.  It is a dsl connection.  Is that my problem?

I have followed the directions and my iphone is not installing the iOS 7.0.2.  I have the most recent version of itunes on my laptop commuter.  my iphone is attached to my laptop via usb port.  The laptop uses dsl not wifi.  Is that my problem?

Exactly what version of iTunes are you running? And DON'T say 'the latest version'... CHECK the version number. You need to be running 11.1 or higher.

  • Airport Extreme Network - Changing from Verizon DSL to Fios (with TV)

I am currently using Verizon DSL for internet access. My present network is stable with an Airport Extreme Base (New version) and two Airport Express running MDS for range extension, providing wireless access for a Macbook and a PC laptop (my wife's connection to her office/Exchange server via VPN). Two G4 desktop Macs are occasionally connected to the network. One AE provides network access to a shared printer. I routinely use Back to My Mac. The network also provides remote (internet) access to an old model iSight camera and to an inexpensive wireless camera which are served by Evocam software.
I have ordered Verizon Fios bundled services (TV-Internet-Phone) for installation on October 18. The service make sense for many reasons, BUT! A multitude of posts on various boards are telling horror stories about setup problems and failure of certain services to work with Fios, particularly in newer installations that include TV.
My question is this: Am I about to step into an inescapable swamp? Should I cancel the order.

Yup, this is expected behavior.  What printer model? What operating system?
Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.
    I am employed by HP

  • As Requested New Thread DSL low speeds and drop outs ref: Anthorny Verizon.

Please see post by Jerrold concerning the form for information requested, I have never been able to fill this out. Note also I had to sign in three times just to access your private letter to me today.
Here is a summary of problem:
When my line was first installed line speed was always between 9 to 12 Mps, which is fine for a 15 Mps line, sometimes would even go higher, so line was ok.
In October 2012 my line speed dropped to about 5 to 7 Mps, I contacted support and repairs were attemped, but did not correct the problem in fact problem became worst.  My line speed dropped to about 2 to 3 Mps.
Now from October to end of November, all repairs did not correct problem.  I was told by chat tech support that the problem was being worked on and there was an open ticket.
In December my line speed returned to normal speed was between 9 to about 13 Mps.  No one had contacted me about this so I again contacted chat tech support who said my line had been fixed and there were no open tickets so have a nice day.  I accepted this at face value and accepted that my line was now ok.
In January 2013, My line speed dropped again to 2 to 3 Mps.  I contacted chat tech support who tested line and put in a repair request.  No one had responded back to me and a week later my line started to drop in and out losing the connection completely.  I again contacted tech support who told me they had no open tickets on my account, they tested line and while we were talking on voice connection my phone started to have heavy static, both my DSL and Phone dropped out at that point.  Tech support called me back and said he was putting a repair request and that my line had problems. That night Tuesday January 29 my Phone and DSL both died, no dial tone on phone and DSL showed only power light on.  Contacted tech support by a friends cell phone and informed them of this, was told ok it would be fixed by open ticket for next day.
Repair was to be made on Wednesday January 30, no one showed up, called tech support and told repair would be made on Thursday.  Thursday late repair person showed up around 4:30 or 5:00pm, landlord gave access to building.  I did not know they were here at all, when he told me( my landlord) I tested my DSL and found it running at 1.7 Mps or below that.  When I attempted to call tech support found my phone was still dead, no dial tone at all.  Contacted chat tech support who told me ticket was still open and would be fixed by Friday, or Monday.
On Monday, phone still dead, DSL running at 1.7 Mps contacted chat support who had me take a phone to the junction box outside of building, plugged in two phones to this no dial tone at junction box (both phones work ok checked using a neighbors phone jack)  should note that on the outside of building there are two junction boxes, but one has lock on it so could not use that one.  Anyway told that DSL could not be fixed until phone is repaired.  Tried contacting phone repair and all I get is auto wait then line drops using a neighbors phone and pay phone my is dead.
Tuesday again contacted chat support now told to bad, until phone is fixed cannot help me ( was'nt that suppose to be done in first repair, fix phone and DSL given both were reported dead).
So why am I upset well look at history I now sit with No Phone service, DSL running way below what I pay for and a tech support who has said to bad not our problem.  I also do not want to hear that my line does not and cannot support the speed I pay for ( it has shown to support that speed at beginning of install up to October and again in December).
Well anyway your letter did not say where to start new thread should I do that here, or in open forum?
Oh, auto phone repair has given me a date for phone service as this Friday, I hope that at least gets done I cannot contact them any other way it seems.
You may also ref: my thread on ping rates over 600 on long distants calls for any other history, but as per your request here is new thread.  Please note as of today I have No Phone so can only be contacted by email or here.  Untill phone is repaired that's all there is.

  • No wireless Internet access - DSL PPPoE modem

I have seen a few threads in the forum related to similar issues but have been unable to fully resolve my problem. I am trying to set up my Airport Express with a DSL router that runs PPPoE. When I attempt to set up the connection, my Express cannot locate the PPPoE server.
From what I understand, I need to disable PPPoE. I have done this on the Airport Express in the System Preferences (Network) but cannot figure out how to disable it on the Built-in Ethernet connection while running OSX 10.5.1.
The Airport Express indicator is solid green but I am unable to get through to the Internet. It just keeps looking for the connection but has yet to grab it.
I have used the device successfully with a DHCP set-up without any trouble but am visiting family with a different type of service. Any suggestions?
Right now I'm using an Alcatel Speed Touch broadband modem and have a Dynex Ethernet Switch that's splitting the connection between my family's PC and my Airport Express. If I hook up an Ethernet cable to my MacBook Pro and connect with the Built-in Ethernet connection, I have no trouble. So it's obviously something with my Airport Express settings.
Here's a summary of the Airport Express set-up:
    Running firmware 6.3
Internet connection: Connect using PPPoE (Service Name left blank)
    PPPoE: Connection always on
    Wireless Security: WEP 128 bit
Any advice is more than welcome.

  • Issues with vpn connection thru ATT DSL

Hi I hope someone can help me out...
At work we use Cysco VPN Client Verstion 4.8.02.0010
Everyone (about 18 people) can connect to it from their homes. For some reason I am the only member who can not connect.
I am tryihg to connect Via ATT DSL and Cysco VPN Client shows that I am connected, however,
I have no access to any of the networks from work.
I have tried connecting using Cox Cable from a friend's home and it connects just fine.
I have read many threads online that indicate that this is a common occurance with ATT DSL users but I have not found
    the fix.
    I am using modem/router type 2701 HG-B
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
