Slooooow performance in Keynote

Working in Keynote 09 on an iMac, I frequently see the spinning color wheel and have to wait and wait and wait. For no apparent reason.

Several Q's:
Is this new behaviour, or was it always true?
Only with KN, or other apps as well?
Any other strange behaviour on your Mac?
What's your hardware - CPU speed, how much RAM?
What kind of maintenance do you do regularly, and have done to try to correct this problem?
Do you have any theories? As a computer graphics/website pro, you're probably pretty well-equipped, and well-versed in this stuff, so what you've thought of, tried, and already found to be unsuccessful is useful information.

  • Slow performance of Keynote 6.0.1

Shortly after upgrading to Mavericks I started experiencing performance problems with Keynote.  Here's a description of the behavior:
I create a new document and begin drawing with the standard Keynote shapes and text tool.  At some point performance takes a noticable decline and performing simple operations like using the text tool or selecting and moving an object gets painfully slow.  For example, if I were to type, "The quick brown fox" (which would take about 2 seconds), it would take upwards of 30 seconds to render on the screen.  If I copy and past the same text, it appears within a second.
I believe the slowness has something to do with the number of objects on the slide.  The slides I'm creating typically have 200-1000 objects in nested groups. The slowness doesn't appear to be linear (the more objects the slower it gets), but rather once I cross some threshold it gets slow.  I can't seem to find anyone else experiencing the same problem, so it's not clear if there's something unique about my setup, or the way I'm using Keynote, or something else.
I've tried a number of things to isolate the problem: created a new document with only one (basic) typeface, no raster images or effects, moved the file from iCloud to my local HDD.  In each case I've still experienced the problems. This is really the only application that is causing problems, and so I doubt it has anything to do with my hardware (iMac 2.93GHz, 32 GB RAM).  I monitor CPU and the amount of free RAM and so those aren't the issue. There's almost 2TB free on my HDD and the app is running from a SSD boot drive.  I don't know much about the Console utility, but I don't see any messages that might be related.
Anybody have any ideas on how to correct or better isolate the problem?

I should also note that I discovered this older article https://discussions.apple.com/message/2748043#2748043 regarding similar text performance problems with Pages.
One commenter lists these potential causes:
    1. Do you have any PostScript Fonts installed? Some people have reported problems with some PostScript Fonts.
    2. Do you have any missing fonts? When you open the document, does Pages complain that it cannot find one or several fonts?
    3. Do you have corrupt fonts? Open FontBook, select all fonts and then File > Validate Fonts.
    4. Corrupt pictures, songs and movies in your home folder's Movies, Music and Pictures folders can slow down the product through the Media Browser. AVI films in the Movie folder can slow things down, as QT usually cannot play them.
    5. Go to View > Hide > Layout. For some reason the layout slows things down.
    6. Don't view Thumbnails.
    7. Use the Text Fit option "follow contour" instead of "follow a square" in the bottom section of the wrap inspector. (Or was it the other way round? Anyone?)
    8. If an object is set to wrap, and a wrapped side squeezes out any possibility of text wrapping along that side - such as extending a text box to the margin, the extreme slowdown will occur. So don't.
    9. Use as few objects as possible Fixed on Page. Instead use Moves with Text.
    1. I do have postscript fonts, but none are being used.
2,3. No missing or corrupt fonts.
    4. Problems are not related to media files.
5,6. Layouts and hiding thumbnails have no effect.
7,8. No text options seem to have an effect.
    9. There are many objects -- could that be the problem?

  • Absolutely Disgusted with the performance of Keynote 6.0

After looking forward to some performance and visual upgrades from apple with the arrival of mavericks, I was shocked at how it has affected a lot of my presentations for work on the new Keynote 6.0. Not only do I now have to go through each and every slide show and re-arrange the text, I have to do it on a very short time budget. Editing text is a nightmare, changing the layout of my slides is a nightmare, and whats worse is the app seems to disregard pretty much everything i ask it to do. I dont have time to fix this. It would have been nice to at least be given some notice of the changes, or at least to convert them much more smoothly accross to the new version.
I am definitely not happy. How is everyone else doing with the update?

  • Performance of Keynote 3

Ok, its been a couple weeks now and I can easily say that the performance (I'm talking speed of the application) is much slower than KN2 was. There aren't that many new features that one would expect bloat to be the cause, right?
I'm using a dual 2GHz G5 with 3GB of RAM and it is significantly more lethargic than it should be when it comes to opening, saving, creating new slides, scrolling, etc. This also seems to be true on my Powerbook (1.5GHz).
I noticed a hit in the performance of Pages v2 also, so I am wondering, could the reason for this be because new applications from Apple are universal binaries, allowing them to run on either PPC or Intel x86?
I'm curious, because if that is the case then the future of my Powermac looks a little shorter than I had once thought. Rosetta may not be kind to it.
      Mac OS X (10.4.4)
      Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I just upgraded to Keynote 3 from Keynote 2, and am blown away by how much slower it is on my G4 iMac with 768 MB RAM (10.4.4). Although the new features are certainly welcome, it is so sluggish now that I may just go back to PowerPoint. Too bad, because otherwise it looks fantastic. Maybe there will be a speed increase with a minor update (please!)?

  • After 3 weeks with MS Tier 2 on the phone, the CPU is often 100%, memory 2.5 gigs, slooooow performance. Everything has been uninstalled, reinstalled, wiped cle

I have been letting a MS techie try everything to stop my laptop from choking on 100% cpu usage and a gradually rising memory, slowing the computer to a standstill. Even with no internet access, the cpu usage swings wildly and eventually ends up at max, stopping the computer. Complete malware scans, disc clean up, registry cleanup, complete uninstall/reinstall of addons, Firefox (incl registry keys), disc defrag, almost nothing left to throw out and then reinstall. A reboot does not always help,. several times, it rebooted at 100% cpu usage. But the sysinternals performance monitor shows the largest drain on cpu is Firefox. MS has taken large files twice now to analyze the problem, will report back in a week. IE runs better but I want to continue using FX. If I can.

Did you check which programs and services are started?
Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
If it works in Windows Safe mode then you have a problem with other software, likely security software or a system driver, that is running on your computer.<br />
Make sure that you have the latest updates of your security software and major hardware drivers.
You can use the MSConfig program or the Autoruns utility to see which software and services are getting started.

  • Keynote Performance on Mac Mini (General Question)

I'm hoping the awesome community of Apple users can provide some much needed insight for a guy who's been out of the Apple scene since 2005. I am looking to purchase a Mac Mini 2.3GHz quad-core i7 for the sole purpose of running Keynote on Sunday's at my church. Currently, we have on loan a 15" MacBook Pro (not sure the specs, but I believe it was purchased last year) and it runs Keynote like a champ! That being said, my reasoning for choosing Mac Mini is cost. Any insight into the performance of Keynote running on a vanilla Mac Mini 2.3GHz quad-core i7 would be much appreciated! Also, it would be running on multiple displays.
    Thanks
    1upmshrm

Keynote will run perfectly well on any new model of Mac. For good performance, adding additional RAM to the basic spec is advisable, a minimum of 8GB RAM should be fine.
We run a basic Mac MIni i5 with 8GB at an international conference centre running 8 hours every day.

  • I can't use Keynote with Lion; the wheel is always running., I can't use Keynote with Lion; the wheel is always running.

I can't use kyenote for my presentations with Lion. I did not have any problem before using Lion.
I am yhinking to leave Lion.

I had this problem.  Performance of Keynote 5.1 under Lion was unacceptable; it freezed for several seconds with spinning beachball every time I made a change to a slide.  There are many blog discussions about the problem, which might be related to Lion's implementation of autosave/Versions.  I used the solution described in this discussion (page 22) for downgrading Keynote from version 5.1 to version 5.05 (which doesn't support the Lion Versions implementation):
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3199161?start=315&tstart=0
This completely restored normal responsiveness to Keynote.  Note that you need your original iWork '09 install DVD, and the script recommended to remove iWork takes several minutes to run.  You also need to be careful not to let Software Update reinstall the 5.1 update.
It seems clear that Apple needs to release an update to Keynote to address this problem, hopefully soon.

  • Is Keynote iPhone Remote disabled in the trial version?

After reading all of the info here on how to use the iPhone remote, I still can not connect. The checkbox in Keynote Preferences is greyed out. I have tried setting up a computer-to-computer network too and that still is greyed out.
One question on this computer-to-computer network, on the iPhone I select this network as my wifi network, it tells me I am connected but the display at the top of the phone shows 3G and the Keynote Remote app tells me I am not on a wifi network. What's up with that?
    thanks,
    Michael

After a little fooling around I was able to get it to work. Basically, I had not gone through the registration process when I started Keynote for the first time - I launched it by dragging a powerpoint file to its icon. All I did was shut down Keynote and launch it. This time I got the opening Trial dialog and registered my trial. Now the remote is active and I was able to pair my iPhone and control the presentation.
Also, my iMac is wired to my TimeCapsule (not on airport for performance reasons), Keynote Remote works fine in this configuration since my iPhone is on my local WIFI net hosted by the TimeCapsule.

  • Frequent Freezes

I posted this same problem before without any rectification. I experience frequent freezes and finally located a problem in crash reporter when the report noted "unrecoverable usb crash on port 20." I have two usb mouses, Kensington turbo that is hard wired; a Logitech wireless (bluetooth) and an application called Maximice. I use the Kensington when I do work at home and use the logitech when I perform using Keynote (I use it to go from one slide to another during the presentation). I thought originally that the kensington was the culprit but couldn't prove it. When I go to Activity Monitor, I notice that two mouse applications plus MaxiMice (a scrolling curser app) are all loaded. I'm beginning to wonder if they are all conflicting. I still believe that the Kensington is the problem since I had the problem before I loaded Logitech. It doesn't happen in any particular application and it has happened during playback of a DVD. Any Ideas?

Just had the same. Using Camino browser and then crash. But this was different. All my app locked up one after another and I had to use the power off to restart.

  • If you have not bought iLife 06 - DON'T...

... Not until Apple fixes many problems (I and others in this forum experience) with iMovie - that's my opinion. My two biggest problems are continue crashing with 'themes' feaure and SLOOOOOW performance. And if those are not show-stoppers then I don't know what is.

Don't buy iLife 06, are you mad.........
I could spend £ 150.00 (cheap seat) on a ticket to see the Rolling Stones and get stuck behind some guy with a big hat and be entertained for an hour and a half, or spend half as much and get a family pack iLife 06.
Have you any idea how much pleasure people with little experience of digital media get from producing an near proffesional quality edit of a video shot by a complete novice and then putting it on a DVD with motion menu's etc and giving it to thier friends and family or publishing it with iWeb.
Most people still watch thier video straight from the miniDV tape or even worse one of those silly DVD handy cam things. 3 weeks ago my son was in a play at school, we can't video these events anymore, (political correctness and the protection of minors etc), so we had to make do with a DVD the school sold us for £ 5.00. Load the DVD, I get a play button (nothing else) which I hit in order to watch 45 minutes of unedited video, complete with retakes and the back of the man in front for 15 seconds while he gets up to visit the washroom.
Get it into prospective man, don't go telling everyone not to buy iLife, your not qualified. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a complete novice, nor am I anywhere near a pro, there are a few things in iMovie I think could be better, but as for value, I give it top marks.
(Apple, when do we get the spell checker back in discussions - I need it)
EDIT......... Actually I'm getting the Rolling Stones ticket anyway, but if it was a choice, I'd choose iLife.

  • Slow when building slideshow, pauses

When I'm working with Keynote in iWork 2008, many of the times I switch to another slide to work on it, I get the spinning beach-ball and a few second pause. This is annoying as I can't just jump around to look at different slides. This delay can be a few seconds to 10-15 seconds. A lot of the time this is related to slides with movies but not always. I did not get this with Keynote 2.
Additionally, it seems that my CPU spikes during this time. I run top on the terminal and even it freezes. Once the machine unfreezes, top sometimes reports something like 700% CPU usage. It does not appear to be swapping much to or from disk during this time. It does not seem to be memory constrained either as I thought that would be a problem. Additionally, the movies are not always resized which I thought might be a delay (having to resize the movies or images on the fly).
    Any advice?
So far, I have unsuccessfully tried:
    * rebooting machine
    * deleting Keynote settings in ~/Library
    * running as a different user
    Of note:
    * I have had Keynote 1 and 2 on this machine but 1 has been deleted and 2 still is on it in iWork.
Are there other settings I can delete from older Keynote versions that are not in the ~/Library directory? Should I delete the older iWork? I hate to delete the older iWork in case I have to go back to it (and finding the DVD again might take time as I moved recently).

I've also been disappointed by the performance of Keynote, even though I am running Keynote 4.0.3 on OS X 10.5.2. What is really frustrating is that the spinning beach ball does not only affect Keynote—it causes the whole machine to go unresponsive for a number of seconds. In most other applications, when a spinning beach ball comes up, one can switch to another application and do something else while the beach ball resolves itself, but not in this case.
This has happened especially in presentations with slides containing QuickTime movies.
    Suggestions appreciated.

  • Poor keynote performance when presenting with an MBP 2.16

    Hi,
I've been using Keynote extensively to make scientific presentations ever since it came out, first on a Powerbook G4 and then recently on an MBP 2.16. One of the reasons I got a new MacBook Pro was in fact to improve (= speed up, smooth) animations when presenting: This was acceptable on the Powerbook, but choppy on occasions, and I like my presentations to be perfect. I naturally expected a considerable improvement on the MBP.
To my dismay, it's just the reverse: Performance is in fact absolutely horrible when presenting (that is, with the computer connected via the DVI-to-VGA connector to a projector; using the projector as a second screen): Quicktime movies embedded in the presentation are choppy, slide transitions that playted fine before now often exhibit hiccups (e.g., page flip systematically hiccups), several somewhat complex animations (such as "spinning" a large image") totally fail (instead of the cool spinning, I now get a long pause followed by the all-at-once appearance of the image!) ; it sometimes takes ages (4-5 seconds) long to "build" the next slide, leading to confusion as to whether you have requested the next slide to be displayed or not and the ensuing chaos as you make additional keypresses &c.
Why is this? I've considered possibilites such as I am running Keynote in Rosetta (not the case), I don't have the correct OpenGL drivers after a recent upgrade snafu (the drivers are the correct version), &c. &c. Keep in mind too that this is a 1G trouble-free 2 months old machine with 10.4.7 and nothing too exotic on it. How can a faster machine with loads more VRAM run Keynote so poorly, and disappointgly much less well than my two-year-old PB G4???
    Any tips or insights appreciated.
    -- axel c.

Thanks for your message. I've never had any trouble working with Keynote and testing out presentations on the MBP's own screen; only when projecting and displaying the presentation itself on a secondary screen. I've just ordered an extra G of RAM hoping this would perhaps help alleviate the issues, but your experience (with your 2G machine) suggests it won't change much.
Unfortunately I deleted the demo version right away, but the fact that it works properly suggests some issue with preferences, caches or the like perhaps?
We're not progressing much on this problem.

  • Macbook Air and Keynote performance

I'm very happy with my Macbook Air so far (except for the trackpad button that seems to be unresponsive at times).
BUT. I chose the Air to use it for Keynote presentations. I'm a little bit upset to see that some Keynote effects that I like such as convergence seem to be sluggish. This is just not right for a computer of that price and with dedicated apps from Apple!
Is it specific to the Macbook Air? Any chance for improvements in software updates?
I'm aware that the Air is not the most powerful machine earth, but I did expect Keynote to run flawlessly.

There is an effect of the same name for shapes/graphics as opposed to text. I created a simple shape from the selection in the tool bar. Used as the Build In transition, it creates two copies of the shape that converge to the position of the original shape (from top and bottom). This effect does kind of stutter so badly when the two copies are merged, that it actually becomes unusable. This same effect runs very smoothly on my MacBook, leading me to believe that it is a problem in the driver for the MBA's onboard graphics, since the MacBook uses the older Intel onboard graphics.

  • Can you automatically downsample images in Keynote without cropping?

    Hello All,
I am trying to get Keynote to perform what I think is a pretty basic task, but can't figure out how to make it happen.  I am an art teacher and frequently show my students slide shows made from a large database of .jpgs I have amassed.  Most of the .jpgs were scanned at high resolutions - roughly 2500px on the long edge.  They are made at this size to anticipate improvements in projector resolution in the future.  The slideshows I make are at XGA (1024x768) because this is the native resolution of the school's projectors.
I want to be able to drop large numbers of slides into a slideshow and have Keynote to automatically downsample them to fit on an XGA slide without cropping the image. I currently have "Reduce placed images to fit on slides" checked in the General Preferences.  This does downsample the images, but does so in a way that fills the slide with the image and crops on one dimension depending on the aspect ratio of the image.  So for example, with the two Kertesz images below, the top and bottom is cropped off the first one and the sides off of the second one.  Keynote scales it down so that the image fills the entire slide rather than scaling down so the entire image can fit on the slide.
    FIG 1a
    FIG 2a
I can then go in and resize the image manually in the metrics tab of the inspector so that the full image is represented in each slide (Fig 1b and 2b below).  I have to type in the dimension that is being cropped (768 in Fig 1, 1024 in Fig 2).  This further downsamples the image fitting the entire image on the slide which is desired.  Doing this for each slide can be burdensome though if I am showing slideshows of 100 or so images.  My question is if there is a way to get the results below automatically.  I would like to drop multiple images into my slideshow and have it be downsampled so that the entire image fits on the slide.  Does anyone know how to make Keynote do this?  Thanks.

In the layer of interest make sure the vector mask is selected. Then in the Masks panel adjust the feather slider to an amount that looks right.
