  • FCPX is sooo sloooowwww !!!!

    Hello everyone,
I have a quad core 15" Mac Book Pro with 500gb HDD and *gb RAM.(Bought it last April)
I bought FCPX, Motion 5 and Compressor.
i quickly figured out that if you want to make videos that are full HD at 60 fps, to expect life to move very slowly.
So I reduced the resolution - but even at 1280 x 720 x 30fps my machine just chugs with the beach ball of death sitting there for minutes on end every time i click in my project to move a single clip. Surely this was meant to be a fast computer and the software said in all the previews that it was fast to work work - sorry guys, not happenin ghere.
Any tips for speedin up the performance of this beastie ??
(Moption 5 and Compressor seem ok - I repeat - my 2m:13s clip using Quick Time Animation in comresoor made an 8Gb file.... took a loooooooong time... ie: 12 hours to render and export....)
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Regards,
    Craig

Thanks very much for this - I'm trying it (proxy media) out now. Seems like a very clever feature.
The aspect ratio thing is a hassle for me. If I may indulge in my story todate:
I recorded a nature show off free to air tv to my panasonic blu-ray pvr.
I burned the title to a dvd (I'm relatively unsure of the format, as it finalised a dvd as part of the process).(.vob files etc).
I have imported the dvd using a video converter program (aimersoft) with 1980x1080 resolution - .mov format.
The thing is - the imported file looks more like a square than a rectangel. Even when I change the spatial conform setting (there is only a choice of fit, fill or none) I can't see any immediate difference.
Is there anything obvious in my process that you might recommend me re-visiting ?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Ios 4.3.1 makes my iphone 4 run ridiculously sloooowwww

Its running so slow its amazing. Restoring as a new phone doesn't work. It was fine before. This is ridiculous... wish i never updated.
EVERYTHING stutters and lags. opening an app, closing an app, opening a folder, scrolling, opening multitasking pane.
    Using never Jailbroken iphone 4

May need to take to Apple store if restoring to new doesn't work. Also, can you go backwards to previous version?
No i cant, could they at the apple store, or would they just replace it do you think?

  • Wifi on my iPhone 5 incredibly sloooowwww

Something is wrong with the wifi on my new iPhone 5. It's very very very very very.....very slow. I've kinda stopped using it because LTE is so much faster and seems to have pretty good coverage here in SF. BUT! I'm running into problems when I need to download an app that is is over 50MB. My app store says I need to be connected to a wifi signal in order to download apps that big. But when I do turn on Wifi, whether its at work or at home or anywhere where there is a wifi connection, the connection is so slow that I either can't connect to the app store or it takes literally forever. I've tried to do a side by side speed test with my old iPhone 4 to make sure it's not the wifi signal. I will load websites simultaniously with my two phones and the old iPhone 4 beats the 5 everytime, by a lot. Sometimes the iPhone 5 can't load the page when the 4 loads it in a zip.
is there something wrong with the aentenna maybe? Do I need to have a Genius look at it?
Like I said. I've tried this on a few differnt wifi networks and it's all the same. Slow slow slow.
    Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions?

  • HT2305 I am using an Iomega Home Network Media Server Cloud Edition. I need to know to how to install Bonjour to the Iomega so that it will run my TiVo Desktop Program to transfer media files to/from the TiVo units to/from the Home Network Drive.  Help ?

TiVo support has already advised me that Bonjour Browser is needed so that the TiVo can communicate with the Iomega.  The Iomega already has installed Apples' AFP protocol.
The only way that I can currently transfer or access any files on the Iomega Home Network Cloud Drive with TiVo is if the folder on the Iomega Drive is listed in the TiVo Desktop Plus software that runs the TiVo server. This means that my laptop has to be continually running non-stop for files to transfer or for me to access them.
I am looking for a way where TiVo will recognize the Iomega Home Network Server just as it recognizes the other TiVo unit on my home network.  TiVo menus have a place for adding an app that is TiVo compatiable; however, I have not been able to find any.
Can someone please help?  TiVo has advised me that there 3rd Party software out in tech world that is capable of running the Tivo Desktop Server better than the TiVo Desktop Server Plus program itself but I have been unable to locate it..
    Thanks

Just had a look at this: http://www.ufsexplorer.com/inf_xfs_nas.php and decided it's more hassle than it's worth so going to restore my files the sloooowwww way. Anyone know a good way to sync data to the new drive?

  • Windows 7 Gadgets slow to respond, 50% CPU utilisation with gadgets that "move"

I have a fresh installation of Windows 7 RC and everything was fine. I have no idea what may have caused this, but on day 2 of using Windows 7 RC, any desktop gadgets that move (like the CPU meter or the clock with its second hand enabled) cause the sidebar.exe process to go to 50% CPU utilisation (which is 100% of one core on my dual core CPU).
These gadgets then just become unresponsive and I have to close them. I can only keep the Weather gadget on because it doesn't have any animations. I have all Windows updates and the latest NVIDIA driver from Windows Update and even their own website doesn't help. There is something wrong with my gadgets. I have never installed any extra gadgets.
    What could it be?

Same issue, but after Vista x64 Home Prem upgrade to Win7 Home Prem x64.  ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card, Quad Core & can't even change the settings of the Clock if I set the seconds hand.  The clock takes up a continuous full core (25% of overall CPU) while the seconds hand is running; if the seconds hand is off then CPU utilization is 0% between minute updates.  Other gadgets are similar, but many such as Calendar, Weather, and some non-MS gadgets work perfectly fine.  Must be some kind of javascript issue.  I have Avira Antivir before & after upgrade to Win7, so AVG isn't the issue for me - I even tried with Antivir and Comodo Firewall turned off. UAC on.
This machine is FAST & it can't handle a little gadget.  (7.2/7.3 Windows Experience subscores on all but hard disk, which is 5.9)  Didn't have this issue in Vista x64 Home Prem.
    edit:
Checked the Win7 Resource Monitor CPU tab:
sidebar.exe - While not under heavy CPU load, "Analyze Wait Chain..." from context menu continually shows "One or more threads of sidebar.exe are waiting to finish network I/O", and indicates thread 4140 which is WinInet.dll (Internet Extensions for Win32 application extension.)  Under heavy CPU load, several other threads starting from sidebar.exe were indicated from the same message from "Analyze Wait Chain..." as well.
All other non-sidebar processes indicate "running normally" from "Analyze Wait Chain..."
Another clue:  If I login using the "Administrator" account, there is *** no performance problem ***!  The sidebar.exe shows as "running normally" from "Analyze Wait Chain..."
    So I also tried:
    - w/UAC turned off on the normal user (administrator rights) account (no fix)
    - tried creating a *new* normal user (administrator rights) account; still sloooowwww (also try this one w/o UAC, still bad)
-Problem Status:  normal User Accounts have the sidebar performance problem, Administrator account runs fine.
    Edit: 12/31/09
    SOLVED!!!!
After digging into the sidebar.exe output from Sysinternals Process Monitor, I noticed a peculiar difference between the output for the properly functioning Administrator account & my User accounts.  The admin acct showed the monitor profile for a good number of operations, while the User accts showed the wsRGB.cdmp value for the same operations, which was peculiar because I had my User accounts configured to use the system defaults, the same way I had the admin acct configured.
Going into the Windows Color Management, Advanced tab, I found that if I chose either of the "virtual device model profile" choices for the "Device Profile" setting, the performance hit was instant.  If I used any of the "normal" icm profiles, performance was good.  So I changed my system default Device Profile from "sRGB virtual device model profile" to the std sRGB.icm profile & everything is working great!
Note: In addition to the Gadgets, this also impacted the Windows Media Center Internet TV listings performance, which was also back to good performance after this WCM setting change.  I'd expect there are numerous other apps that could be affected by the "virtual device model profile" handling.  Googling "virtual device model profile" seems to bear that out, as I see others who ran into app problems when using that in the WCM applet.

  • Adobe AIR 3 Performance Issues and Code Signing Certificate Problem

I recently updated to Adobe AIR 3.0 SDK (and runtime) doing HTML/Javascript development using Dreamweaver CS5.5 in a Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit).
The AIR app I'm developing runs well from within Dreamweaver. But when I create/package the AIR app and install it on my machine:
    1. The app literally CRAWLS running it in my Windows 7 12G RAM machine (especially when I use the mouse to mouse over a 19-by-21 set of hyperlinks on a grid) --- IT IS THAT SLOOOOWWWW...
    2. The app runs fine in my Mac OS X 10.6.8 with 4G RAM, also using the Adobe AIR 3 runtime.
About the Code Signing Certificate problem:
When I try to package the AIR app with ADT using AIR's temporary certificate feature, I get the error message "Could not generate timestamp: handshake alert: unrecognized_name".
I found some discussions on this problem in an Adobe AIR Google Groups forum, but no one has yet offered any resolution to the issue. Someone said Adobe is using the Geotrust timestamping service --- located at https://timestamp.geotrust.com/tsa --- but going to this page produces a "404 --- Page not found" error.

  • Placebo ? Tried x86_64 arch and it seems to be faster than i686

I don't know if it was placebo effect but when I've tried yesterday arch64 with exactly same packages installed and kernel too (modules and daemons same too) I've had a feeling that all programs loads faster. Today when I switched back to i686 on this machine (C2D T5600 2GB RAM nvidia 7600GO) I'm in pain that everything is so sloooowwww. I think it's a placebo effect but I'm sure - when flash and all a few apps will be ported to x86_64 I'll switch.
What do you think ? Is it possible to see the difference ?
The biggest advance was time to load app - especially firefox / amarok / openoffice...

some stuff does move faster in arch64 & some a little slower
if youre waiting for flashplugin for 64bit youll be waiting a long time
but you can use nspluginwrapper see here

what other apps you looking for there maybe some equivilent or workaround

  • App store not working in mavericks

Having a torrid time with Mavericks. App store, Mail, Calendar, Preview, Terminal and others, nothing seems to work. I can;t even download a fresh install because App Store won't open. The gloss is coming off my long term Apple fun and I'm not happy. It shouldn't be this difficult to sort this out but it's blind alley central. Can't make a usb boot stick, imac runs sloooowwww and RAM (12gb) is gobbled up by Safari on tickover.
If I had wanted a crap computer I'd have bought a PC
    Anyone got a solution?

If this happened to me, I would check System Preferences > Date & Time and System Preferences > Lanugage & Region to make sure I was pointed to the right store.

  • GarageBand won't start

I'm trying to open GarageBand, but as long as I'm trying to open a previous project, it crashes while initializing. Can someone help me, please? I really need to get it to work so I can fix something before a deadline of sorts.
I would try to open it on a different computer, but the other Mac in the family is an iBook that only has GarageBand 2.
Mac Mini Core Solo   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   no upgraded hardware components are installed

I recently re-installed GB, and clean install of 3 after screwing up my GB2 install, and have seen similar sloooowwww startup issues. The first time I launched GB3 took a long time (possibly while the Apple Loops were being indexed?) and the first time I selected some software instruments it also took a very long time to be ready (another internal indexing or config thing?) And, when I open an existing GB2 project in GB3 for the first time, things likewise seem to take quite a while on occasion (possibly a format conversion thing?).
How long do you see the spinning beach ball for? I've seen it occasion for plenty long enough to make me think GB has crashed and got hung up, but then, if I let it keep on keeping on, it grinds through in the end. This sort of thing seems to be happening to me less frequently, so I'm kind of crossing my fingers and hoping that GB3 is resolving whatever issues its finding with my stuff Have you checked the Activity Monitor to see whether GB has just died completely or whether there's just mighty CPU thrashing goin on in the background?

  • USB ports excruciatingly slow.

I have about a 2008 Mac Pro and the USB ports are giving transfer speeds that are SOOO SLOOOOWWWW.
Yes, all of them - front and back.
I'm talking about simple file transfers are taking for-ever.
    Any ideas? Help!

Open the System Profiler in Apple menu -> About This Mac.   Look under hardware -> USB.   Should tell you what's slower than the standerd 480 Mbps that might be slowing you down.  Every "bus" slows down to the slowest device on it.

  • Outage in Baltimore, MD - 3G is CRAWLING and 4G is still down completely.

    So much for Verizon's dependability.

Long story short I'm having the same issue in a different zip code. Phone works fine pretty much anywhere until I get near my house and connect to the tower about 0.5 miles away. It's fast until about 8am and sporadic throughout the day. Then awful all afternoon and night until about 11pm. They're sending a new SIM card (yawn!) and did let me talk to a network guru. They just need to admit some towers are saturated. Any network engineer has the software and expertise to figure out when things are maxed out. When I realized I was having the issue I started speed testing in different locations of my city. At baseball games, fast, golfing, fast, early in the morning at home, fast, out of town, fast, same time each and every day near my home SLOOOOWWWW. I'm not a rocket scientist, but I'm noticing a trend here. Sad they don't have the software to see their towers are swamped. Or is it that they just pretend they don't know? Honesty is the best policy, in my opinion, at least then customers know where they stand and don't get frustrated. I'd rather get, "yes, a tower in that area is swamped during these hours and we will be upgrading within the next few months" rather than "oh, we know nothing of it!" And I shouldn't have to ask for the manager's, manager's, manager's, manager's, manager to get that info, either.

  • Any way to speed up the toolbar?

I like working in fullscreen, but the timing on the toolbar dropdown is sloooowwww... Any way to speed it up?

No, that does not sound right at all.  ( 5 is a lot of movies to cart around on your pad.....)
Hopefully you are doing this on your home wifi set up, and trying to use cell, or Starbucks.
Is your home system normally that slow?
You can test your system speed by download one of many speed apps available like 'speed test'. And if you are any sort of decent service, you should get a speed of at least 2 mbps, and potentially as hig as 20 Mbps .
If your connection is fine, then something else is going on.  Suggest you cancel the download, and try again.  It may be you are getting hung up at the server end.
If your connection, however, is real slow, there is nothing you can do about it except to find a faster wifi spot.  ( the speed test app will let you test)

  • Getting a little better but the crashes keep coming

Hey guys, I'm back after several days of intense editing. Have really learned the value of saving under a new name FREQUENTLY, and hard drives, BIG hard drives. I added another 1/2 TB SATA because the 50 gig digital files I was generating filled my other one and another 320GB. Turns out that compiling mini chapters and saving them as uncompressed AVI files REALLY speeds up the final compile and eliminates a lot of interim surprises (like lost work in a crash). That's the good news, along with my mastering cuts and tweaks, I' m almost having fun with this!
But then there are the crashes. Geeze...these are annoying. Especially with bigger files. You get that "you're running out of system memory, the system may become unstable and you need to save your work......" Then, before you can make a keystroke, program's gone. And sometimes takes your working file with it, though less often after the latest upgrade. I started watching the Performance field of the Task Manager, and it is very telling. CLEARLY 2GB of RAM is not enough. Unfortunately, I have a hyperthreaded machine and with 2GB, It's full. It sits between 1,1 -1.4GB during ops, then if it goes over that, you're headed to never-never land in a big hurry. Clearly Adobe has some serious memory management issues. It gets away from them a lot and there are a lot of 2GB machines out there. I wish I could spring for something better but I just cant do it now.
Problem 2. Sometimes the system gets into a mode where PREVIEW PLAY won't stop. In fact once playing, the computer responds to no commands or mouse action at all....VERY annoying. Must play thru entire video to end before stopping and returning your control. The video and audio timeline move to the left but the time scale above it is stuck. Cant change zoom and often the video preview is doing nothing and just audio is playing. A real time waster, only solved by shut down and that sloooowwww restart of PRe8.
Problem 3. If you zoom in on a timeline then drag the position indicator at the bottom even a little above slowly, BOOM. You get that memory warning and crash all within about 2 seconds....pretty reliably, maybe every time. I am a CAD person and used to zipping around a drawing, usually so fast most people cant figure out what I'm doing. Boy, have I had to temper THAT behavior in video editing!
And the most annoying one....That the video playback doesn't track audio, skips frames and (even with PRe8 processing priority pushed to Hi, which helps some) makes it really hard to avoid test burns to see if your timing is right. As said earlier, I am doing BMP animations mixed with video and audio clips. I would say this 20 minute project has 300 between audio and video, could be more. I am actually quite pleased with my results but it is a very painful process.
Any way to tab from cut to cut?
It would make finding gaps a lot easier in my zillion cut video.
I know arrows step frames but neet cut skipping.
I'll be working thru another weekend so hope someone sees this!

I'm not sure why you're using uncompressed video, but that actually could be contributing to your issues. Premiere Elements uses a DV-AVI workflow, and that, rather than uncompressed AVI, is the ideal format to work with in this program. Uncompressed video is actually ungainly -- a good five times the size of DV video -- and most computers choke trying to work with it.
Besides, it gives  you no advantage in Premiere Elements since, because of the way the program works, whatever you put into it gets turned into DV-AVIs before the program can work with it anyway. That's why you're likely having to render your video all the time and why you're seeing so much lugging and crashing.
You want to use a video format that, when you add it to your timeline, has neither a red nor green line above it on the timeline. DV-AVIs in a project set up for DV has no lines above it until you add an effect or transition to it, and the program uses it very efficiently.
As for the little "flag" or flap or shade on the upper corner of some of your videos, if you're describing what I think you're describing, that's an indicator that your video is completely untrimmed. If you trim off a bit of the end of your video, this corner flap will disappear. If you untrim your video clip all the way, it will return.
I've worked for the past several years to provide lots of information on this program, if you're at all interested, where. • OS 10.3.7 update and Safari https

I have a G5 at work and a G4 and G3 at home. I ran the automatic 10.3.7 update through software update on the G5 and G4 then noticed them both having the same problem. No matter what browser I use (i.e. Safari, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Mozilla) I can't connect to secure sites, any sites with https.
On the G5 I have a WAN internet connection and at home on the G4 and G3 I just got Direcway satellite internet service. Both computers were accessing the internet just fine until I ran the OS update. Direcway was able to bypass the problem but now my (very expensive) satellite internet access is sooooo sloooowwww at home. I can't even connect through Safari at work. I am running 10.3.2 on the G3 at home and it connects to the secure sites but is slower than it was before.
I am running the most up-to-date Java and cleared the cache as the "safari is super slow" posts suggested. However I haven't re-installed the update yet. Please help! I would greatly appreciate any suggestions.
I noticed "Our House" user is also on Direcway, how is your service?

After delving deeper into this issue, I've narrowed it down to some problem with how Safari is querying DNS when opening an HTTPS web page. If I use the "host" command to determine the IP address, and then type https://12.8.192.15 (or whatever is appropriate) the page will load at near normal speeds. Of course, I get a security warning that the identity can't be verified.
I also ran "tcpdump" and compared http/https while opening the same site. Regular http will make one basic DNS query to my primary ISP server, gets a result, and then starts loading the page. Https, makes many different queries to all three of my ISP DNS servers, some appear to work and some seem to fail and then it finally loads the page. Several make reference to AAAA records which usually means IPv6 is involved. This was disabled on my network interface based on other thread suggestions. I don't really understand why Safari would perform different DNS resolution based on the protocol.
The final piece that may have significance is I know the sites with problems have some type of load balancing. This usually means a CNAME record is returned by the first DNS query. Again, I don't know why the difference in protocol would affect this, the browser should just get the address and run with it.
