Sloooww

Hello all,
over the past month my BB speed has dropped to around 1Mbps. I was getting around 4 before then. Now, I'm unable to use iPlayer on my BTVision box.
I have a NTe5a mastersocket and, connected to the test socket on this I am seeing similar speeds.
I have moved my router recently but was getting slow speeds before I moved it. My contract is up in 6 months and I am thinking of moving to Virgin as I work from home and this slowness is really making me less efficient.
All comments welcome. Will call support too for any help.

Hmm, just checked my router stats this morning and my up connection time is marked as 7 hours. Which means that it the router must have gone down/disconnected when everyone was in bed. Any thoughts?

  • Sloooww and also Export Query

Hello World, I really appreciate you going to the trouble of reading this. Please forgive my wordiness but I have tried to include all the information in one go without needing to be prompted for the rest of the story.......
iPhoto5, 20GB free space on my 80GB HDD, 110,000 pictures total 3.3GB. takes 1/2 min to open iPhoto or close it and every operation involves the spinning pinwheel. It's very tedious. From looking at other "slow" discussions it seems iPhoto5 Is naturally slow and an upgrade would speed things up. I dont really want the whole iLife08 suite, and I don't know if my "old" G5 would run it.Would it?
    Is iPhoto6 available standalone?
Can I have multiple Libraries? That would fix it for me. Putting the whole Library on an external HD sounds like a very inconvenient fix.
My other query is this: The file sizes of my new camera go from 640 to 2048 (and then upwards). Generally for happy snaps I found 1024 was all i needed from my old camera but now finding the file sizes now too big for most things. So I Export a batch, reduce the file size to 1024 but when I Add to Library the reduced files have lost their original time and date, information I rely on. Is there another way to reduce file size but retain the old time/date?
Thank you for reading thus far. Wojjer reckon?

iLife08 suite, and I don't know if my "old" G5 would run it.Would it?
    It would. See
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/systemrequirements.html
    for details.
    Is iPhoto6 available standalone?
No version is available as a stand alone.
    Can I have multiple Libraries
You can with later versions very easily. For v5 try using iPhoto Library Manager.
Putting the whole Library on an external HD sounds like a very inconvenient fix.
Why? Takes a couple of seconds and you never need think about it again.
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library Folder as an entity from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
So I Export a batch, reduce the file size to 1024 but when I Add to Library the reduced files
It's a while since I used v5, but I know this is certainly not an issue with v7. Mind you it's a great way to defeat the lossless editing feature. And explains how you got 110k photos into 3.3 gigs. They really cannot be more than thumbnails.

  • Firefox 4 & 5 have become intollerably sloooww! VERY much slower than IE9 & Google Chrome.

Firefox 4 developed an 8 - 10 sleep-time. I do not know to what to attribute it. I was hopeful that v5.0 would resolve whatever it was: No Joy. Long delays: "Not Responding."

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • MacPro is sloooww...

I'm not sure what's going on, but in the last couple months or so my MacPro has been running slow slow slow (see specs in sig).
I've been digging through the system trying to isolate the problem, but I've come up empty.
I've seen situations before where disk errors would cause a machine to act slowly, but there are no disk errors reported either in the RAID Utility or system.log when the machine acts up.
I've got iostat running in a terminal window to try to find some correlation between disk and/or CPU activity, but so far I can't find any patterns.
Some symptoms of my problems are SBOD's in Safari doing something as simple as clicking on a link or scrolling down a page.
Mail sometimes has a habit of being unresponsive as well, for example if I have a Safari window in the foreground and Mail in the background, if I click on Mail, it doesn't come forward for a few seconds and if I don't click on mail but instead scroll on it when it's in the background, it doesn't scroll for a few seconds.
More recently, when I started to write out this post, I would type but the keystrokes wouldn't register for a few seconds. Around the same time, I opened up a terminal window and entered a couple of commands and it took about 10 seconds for the commands to display any output (commands were 'w' and 'iostat 1' for example).
I ran the whole suite of Onyx tools (Maintenance and Cleaning tab options), which did nothing.
I suppose the next thing I'm going to try is to disconnect all my connected storage (Firewire arrays and iDisk) and see if I can narrow down the problem, but in the meantime I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions.
Another thing I'll try is safe mode. Maybe it's VMWare, my Cisco IPSec client or the Presonus Firebox driver that's acting up - otherwise I don't know what kext's I have in my system that could cause this behavior.
Also, I seem to recall this under 10.5.4, so the 10.5.5 update didn't correct it and if I recall I tried to re-install the 10.5.5 Combo updater as well, but maybe I'll try that again too.
Anyway, any thoughts or suggestions welcome.

    Tons of free space:
    $ df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity Mounted on
    /dev/disk2s2 2.4Ti 943Gi 1.5Ti 39% /
    devfs 111Ki 111Ki 0Bi 100% /dev
    fdesc 1.0Ki 1.0Ki 0Bi 100% /dev
    map -hosts 0Bi 0Bi 0Bi 100% /net
    map auto_home 0Bi 0Bi 0Bi 100% /home
Further to my initial post, I disconnected all the externally connected storage, and it still freezes up. When it freeze up and iostat is responsive, there are no excessive data transfers or CPU spikes reported in iostat's output. On the rare occasion when iostat does in fact freeze up when the computer also freezes up, there are no excessive data transfers or CPU spikes reported by iostat when it comes back to life and barfs out everything it was buffering for the few seconds it had frozen up.

  • Safari 5 way to sloooww

I had a plug in problem then flash player, downloaded 10.5.8 combo and it seemed good. Now iPhoto runs way slow and internet loads way slow. any suggestions??
what if I upgrade to Snow will that solve the woes of #5?
    Currently running 10.5.8 on G5
MBP runs great w/Snow and 10.6.3.
    what do you think???

    anthony --
If it were me, I'd try really hard to fix the problem before updating.
Sometimes that helps, but if there's an underlying problem, it will just get worse, IMHO.
So, your problems now on 10.5.8 are:
    iPhoto too slow
    Internet slow
How much space do you have available on your hard drive?
    Go here to find out:
Hard Drive icon (upper right corner)
Select that, and press the Apple/Command along with the letter "i" key.
    How much space is used?

  • Sloooww Battery Charging

    Hi,
I've tried just about everything I can think of with my MacBook Pro 15" (late 2008 - replaceable battery).
It starts off charging fairly quickly - saying it would take 2hrs to charge the battery fully (from nearly empty). Sounds great - Amperage is 2100mA into battery.
But, it does - it keeps slowing down and taking longer and longer to charge. Eventually to 2hrs just to charge the last 10-15% at 300mA. It means I spend 6hrs or longer fully charging my battery.
Is this for real? Is this expected?
I've reset the SMC, I've tried going back to 10.5 and a clean install from the MBP discs.
    Any other suggestions?
    thanks,
    j.

Before you noticed the slow battery charge time, how long did it take to charge the battery?

  • SLOOOWW  Wireless Connection

I just got my ibook last night. I was able to connect to my home wireless network (linksys WRT54G router). I did have to make a call to linksys for help determining my network password, but that was easy.
My problem is the internet through my ibook is WAY slow to the point it is unbearable. The connection occasionally gets dropped altogether. I was expecting a much better and faster performance.
I haven't plugged the ethernet directly into my ibook yet, I've only done a wireless connection.
The airport icon shows the connection is fine.
Any ideas on things to check for?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
What exactly is slow? Is it browsing to a specific website? Is it checking mail with a specific mail program? What browser are you using if it is a website that is slow, and what website? What e-mail program are you using? What kind of internet connection do you have, and have you tested a direct connection to the internet without wireless to see if the problem is the router and not the internet connection itself?

  • Why yahoo/gmail retrieval and facebook app so so slow when in WIFI. But using the internet to check for emails and facebook is fast using the same WIFI connection??

Why yahoo/gmail retrieval and facebook app so so slow when in WIFI. But using the internet to check for emails and facebook is fast using the same WIFI connection??

    Hi SandyS_VZW,
Yes tried resetting the wifi connection and problem still persist.
Here it is...to make it clear. Connected thru the same wifi at home...
-> emails (yahoo/gmail) and facebook WEBSITES are working fine and fast when using/accessing thru a browser (chrome/samsung browser) - no problem with this.
-> emails (yahoo/gmail) and facebook APP is soooooo sloooww (thru the App). Slow I mean comparing it to using their browser/websites... news feeds/emails refreshing so quickly but not when using the APP installed in Samsung Galaxy Note 4. Slow like - It will take around 5-10minutes just to get your emails and news feed refreshed.
THIS HAPPENS ONLY WHEN CONNECTED THRU A WIFI which has a speed of 10-20mb. It is not happening when connected to the network data/plan.
My wife has the same Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (coming from different provider at&t) - same setup (emails, fb app), same wifi connection, but she's not experiencing anything like it.
Not sure why, I dont want to believe that while connected to a WIFI, Verizon is restricting anything and ******* me off to make me switch to my data plan connection everytime - which is Unfair!
Was there a known issue similar about this case?
    thanks,

  • Issues re-installing Snow Leopard

Guys.. Just recently my Mac gained some issues. It wont boot up. I can only sometimes get it to boot up in safe mode. And when it does that, it runs really sloooww..... So I was going to do "Archive and Install" on it. But it seems there is no such thing on Snow Leopard. I am an amateur photographer and need to keep my photos. How can I mange this at my current situation?
Yes, I already ran disk utility like five times.. I reset the PRAM... I have done everything I know to do. Help?

    mmm...
Looks like you are in real trouble...
Do you have a External Drive? If you do, put all your important files in it and reinstall. The best is to set up Time Machine.
If you don't have a External Drive, you can run your safe mode (I didn't know there is one!) and copy important things on a removable "thing" (anything- SD, Flash etc).
Perhaps you should get a technical guy and replace the drive.
Please tell me more information as I didn't quite know exactly what happened.

  • Powermac G4 as media file server/storage?

    Hello everyone,
Long time reader, first time poster.
I currently run a 15" Pbook G4 1.67g with 2 GB of RAM and 100GB HD, hooked up to an 80GB and 250GB external FW drives. I've slowly been transferring all my DVDs and CDs to the drives, not to mention video footage and all the photos I've been taking. Right now I've got maybe 3 or 4 GB free between the 3 drives.
I'm greedy. I want to keep going. I don't want to trim back. I have this dream of getting ALL of my music and movies onto HD storage, so I can digitally access any of my media at any time.
I run iTunes off my Pbook to access my library (which is stored on the 250GB external), but it runs SOOO SLOOOWW. iTunes is extremely sluggish and slow to react. Batch editing files (I'm extremely anal about the tags and album art) takes FOREVER. I hate it.
I blame the external drives. Maybe they're slow? (The 250GB FW is a Maxtor OneTouch drive).
I do have an old Powermac G4 dual 533mhz with a nearly-dead 80GB HD in it. I was wondering if there was a simple way to load that machine up with the maximum amount of HD storage, and hook it up to the Pbook for my super-optimal-dream-media-storage solution.
I'd prefer the cheapest and fastest (in terms of access/transfer speed) solution possible. I know I can set up the Powermac as a file server (but I don't know HOW), and I know I could set up the Powermac as a FW target drive and just plug it in (is that really optimal? Also, I have sold the monitor for it ... all I have is the keyboard and mouse.. is there a way to hook up the MacG4 to the Pbook as a monitor? and how much of a headache would it be to repeatedly connect/disconnect to the MacG4 without a monitor?)
Anyway. I'm also open to solutions which would make the Powermac a wireless storage solution, since I live in a small apartment and love toting the Pbook around to surf and blog in bed, at the table, in the kitchen, etc.. except with my current setup I have to disconnect it from the music storage. So I can't have my Pbook in the kitchen and play wirelessly off iTunes...
Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? I know I'm asking like a million questions in one post, but I appreciate all the help in advance.

    Hi, jzn omg!

Your hard drives are severely overloaded. I try to maintain at least 10-15% or more available space on a drive, particularly on a startup drive. I'm not surprised that the applications are "beachballing" - your system hasn't been given sufficient hard drive space from which it can effectively operate. Moreover, your drive data is likely to be significantly fragmented with the system working "overtime" to constantly search for and piece together files before it can use them and execute the next command.

  • What to do with Power Mac G4 Sawtooth

I have an Eleven year old Power Mac G4 - Sawtooh. (1999)
I have the GigaHrzt 1.4 ghz processor upgrade inside. It rips along !!
I have 1.2 GB of Ram
I have Two 160 GB drives ( the poor mac thinks they are 127 gb )
I have Two 200 GB Drives in a ATTO Stripe raid = one Drive about 400GB.
    I have a DVD Burner
I have the Original DVD-RAM drive as well.
I have the Internal Modem - rmember the screaking noise for log in ?
I love this computer !! I can edit in Final Cut Pro 4.5 and it still rips along !!
BUT - alas.... along comes HD and I can no longer get this G4 to import or edit any of that JD, in close to real time...imagine 20 minute wait just to watch a cut !
I was thinking of turming it into a BIG back up hard drive - or a server....?
So I am looking for Ideas ! I hate to see my old friend go - sell her off on Craigs List for $50.... But She is SOOOO LOUD compared to my new Mac Pro tower !
    And soooOOO SLoooww in comparision.
And I need the Mac Pro to rip through the HD video stuff !!
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks

    I've even got a 56 K modem inside !
    I'm still looking for ideas...??
If your internet service provider makes dial-up service available, you can use the internal modem of your G4 Sawtooth to connect to the Internet on those occasions when high-speed service to your location gets interrupted. Albeit, the dial-up service won't be very fast, but sometimes it can be helpful while a high-speed service interruption is being remedied.
Also, you can then share that dial-up connection with another computer by connecting them with a FireWire cable.
    In OS X 10.4.11 Tiger:
In System Preferences > Sharing, click on the Services tab. Then click to put a check mark in the check box to the left of Personal Web Sharing. Then click on the Start button. Next, click on the Firewall tab. In the Allow box, there should be another check mark in a check box to the left of Personal Web Sharing, if the Firewall is on. Then click on the Internet tab. To the right of "Share your connection from:", select Internal Modem from the drop-down menu. Under "To computers using:" click to put a check mark in the check box to the left of Built-in Firewire. Then click on the Start button. When asked whether you want to turn on Internet Sharing, click on the additional Start button.
    In OS X 10.5.8 Leopard:
In System Preferences > Sharing, do not yet click to put a check mark in the check box to the left of Internet Sharing, but rather click on the words "Internet Sharing" to highlight that option. To the right of "Share your connection from:" select Internal Modem from the drop-down menu. To the right of "To computers using:" click to put a check mark in the check box to the left of Firewire. Next, click to put a check mark in the check box to the left of Internet Sharing. Then, when asked whether you want to turn on Internet Sharing, click on the Start button.
It might take some time before the second computer is able to access the Internet. I'm not sure how long it might take. Maybe it will be immediate, maybe it will be a few seconds, or maybe longer. Also, the Internet connection might get dropped occasionally, although maybe it won't either. If it does get dropped, stopping and restarting Internet Sharing has eventually worked for me.
In summary, your G4 can be used as a back-up means of connecting to the Internet in case of high speed service outages.

  • Transferring iphoto content to timecapsule, transferring iphoto content to timecapsule, transferring iphoto content to timecapsule, transferring iphoto content to timecapsule

I want to free up some space on my mac book pro as it's getting very sloooww! The 2 obvious things to go are photos and music. Should I transfer these to my timecapsule? If so, how?
Any advice would be much appreciated
    thanks
    L

This is a difficult problem and one for which there may not be a solution apart from redirecting each alias manually for each photo.
When you run a Referenced Library iPhoto makes an alias to the actual location of the file. Aliases are quite good when the files are on the same volume. However, once they are on another volume, particularly one not formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled), like a NAS, aliases will not follow the file when the file is moved. It will not update the path to the file.
iPhoto has no file management tools to force the db to recognise the new location of the files.
So, you need to find an app that will examine those aliases and try reconnect them with the new location of the files. Some folks have had success with [FileBuddy|http://www.skytag.com/filebuddy> others haven't. Give it a try.
If that fails your options are
    1. Reconnect each photo to the alias manually.
    2. Convert the Library to a Managed Library - AliasHerder is an application that will replace these aliases with the actual files, and so preserve your Library and all your work in it. As always: back up first.
I note that you plan to use a Time Capsule for storing the photos. This is not a designed use for the product, and you'll still be in a position with the Library on one volume and the photos stored on another.

  • Mac Half of Partitioned FlashDrive Doesn't Show

    Greetings!
I have 900Mhz G3 ibook running 10.4.10 and have a 1gig flashdrive partitioned into DOS and Mac halves. While both flashdrive partitions appear on the desktop, only the DOS partition appears in the Sidebar. Both do appear in the sidebar of my 10.4.10 1gHz eMac, so is it a G3 thing or what?
    Thanks for any hint!

Thanks, I knew that. It's just that formatted all DOS makes the flash drive so SLOOOWW! I mean, loading in 20 minutes what tales 30 seconds on the Mac formatted size! For really large video files you might as well take two aspirins and go to bed!

  • Slow Wifi when using Slingbox/how to check?

Well after reading a few of the posts here I think the Airport Extreme's update maybe the issue. I use a Slingbox with my Macbook and have had excellent Wifi speeds anywhere in my house. I would run upwards of 4000k+ and the HD feed looked great. Now I am stuck at 900 +/- kb and the feed from my Slingbox is grainy and slow.
I have double checked every hardware connection, rebooted the Airport, checked all settings and nothing seems to speed it up. Bottom line... is there a way to roll back the firmware or how would I check to see if the Airport is using the "n" networking for my Wifi signal.
    Thanks
