Slot-loaded optical drive make hissing noise without any disc inside

I got the MBP 15" (mid-2010) two months ago. Recently I found the optical drive made hissing noise even when there was no disc inside. It sounds like trying to mount or eject the disc. I am not sure it is hardware-related or software-releated problems. Can someone help me?

  • Slot loading optical drive not recognized.

Recently I replaced a none functioning optical drive in my 15" 1.67 HS PB with 2.0g ram 160hdd. On reboot it will show a grey screen or a ? folder. I have tried everything ( and I mean everything) 2x over. This is what I find:
    1) The PB will boot up fine if only either the od or the hdd is connected to the mother board. But not with both drive connected.
    2) The PB will boot up with an external PB2 in target disk mode with only the od drive connected. I mentioned this because this allow me to use apple HW test that described the hdd as ID-0.
    3) The od is a UJ85J-B panasonic/masushita from owc. Exchanged x2 thinking its defective.
I believe this is a master/slave issue. my question is will the following article apply to my situation.

Is ther anything else I can do or use the od as an external?
Will very much appreciate any in put.

We have 3 right now having problems. 1 just went into the ITech store to have a CD removed. 1 will not even accept a CD anymore and the other just makes awful noises and scratches the CD. These have been minimally used also. They said the Optical Drive is bad on the 1st one. Of course, we are 1 month past our warranty! I think Apple should be backing this but when I called about it they didn't want to help me. Even saying I had not registered them even though I had documentation from them saying I had. I know the feeling of being ripped off. Our company has purchased 20 of these in the last 1 1/2 years. You think we would get a little bit of help from Apple being we have purchased so many of their products in the last 20 years.

  • Optical drive makes weird noise when CD/DVD is inserted, won't play

OK so...When I put a CD or a DVD into the optical drive, it makes this weird consistant sound that, while i feel like an idiot typing it out, sounds something like: eee ooh ooh eee ooh ohh eee ooh ooh.
It does this for a couple minutes until it responds to me pushing the eject button.
    Anyone know what this is?

    Anyone know what this is?
I would guess a hardware failure.

  • Optical Drive makes noise when lid closed

    Hello all.
When ever my wife closes her MacBook the optical drive makes the noise as if it is being awken from sleep. The problem is that it does this over and over. The only way to stop it is to power down the computer. It does not do this when the computer is active, only when the lid is closed. Has this happened to anyone or does anyone know what the problem is and/or how to fix it?
    Thanks
    rx

    rx,
I am having this exact same problem with my Macbook as well. I am very frustrated. My computer will be 2 yrs old in August. Within the last few months, I have had the battery replaced for burning up the computer (June '07), the optical drive replaced (Nov 07), and the hard drive replaced (Feb '08). It appears I am going to have to take it back to the mac store to get this fixed. This has been going on for a month and I have tried everything including Disk First Aid to try to get it stop! Please post if you find something else! Meanwhile, I will say the apple care warranty was a better investment then the computer itself. I have been VERY DISAPPOINTED with the product and I have had Mac products for years (Mac Performa, iMac, eMac, iPodmini).

  • Optical Drive makes funny sound?

I have Toast 10 loaded on my macbook, which I sometimes use to load .dmg's (as in to MOUNT a CD)
however I've noticed ever since I started doing this whenever my macbook starts up OR wakes up from sleep the optical drive make a "whirring" sound, the same sound as when I start up the App Toast, almost as if its NOW looking for optical media (to burn or otherwise) whether its there or not...
Is this sound not a good thing?

I found THIS...heres what some folks had to say about a self test, I think Toast instigates this self test and now it does it all the time...
These folks said not to worry...?

  • My CD/DVD drive keeps making noises with no disc inserted

My computer's CD/DVD drive makes the noise of it trying to pull in a disc whenver my computer is sat down or squeezed slightly from being picked up. I'm not sure why it keeps doing this. Is there anything wrong with it? Or is it just a little too sensitive?

Yes and no, the computer is obviously physically triggering the disk catch which may mean it's got a loose screw or something similar. It's advisable one way or the other to have it looked at or look at it yourself, the mechanism for the drive should be visible by removing the keyboard.

You could purchase any commonly available external USB DVD/CD writer, such as the excellent LG brand units sold on Amazon, for about $30 US.  I've used an LG writer for years to save wear and tear on my older Superdrive.

  • Super Drive makes bad noise/is loud on initial load

    Hey There,
Just got an MB with the super drive and i have noticed an extremely loud noise when you first load a cd/dvd. Anyone else get this? The media mounts fine and when the disc spins up, the drive is quite, but when you first load it, there are 2-3 loud cranks coming from the drive

    Compare it to this...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305478
Mine makes loud noises as well, but I think that comes w/ the territory since it's such a skinny drive, and it's a slot-loader.

  • Optical drive makes noises when waking up

Every time I turn the machine on or wake it up from sleep, the optical drives lets out a little whine, as if checking if there's a CD in the drive. I find that very disturbing. Is there a solution?

    Dushkin,
its normal behavior-basically, as you said, the OS
checking to see if there is a disc in the drive when
it starts or wakes up. What I find more annoying is
accidentally hitting the eject key all the time and
    hearing the same noise.
ugh the mis-hitting the eject button drives me nuts. cuse i do it so often when going to hit delete while typing. sometimes it doesnt even make the eject sound(if ive already hit it a number of times i think it knows there is no disk to eject)
im still looking for a software program that can disable the eject button on the keyboard, but obviously dont want to do irrepairable harm to my computer so it looks like i will just deal with the mis-hits

  • Optical Drive makes noise twice on startup

    Hi all,
This problem first appeared when I first changed my RAM from 4GB to 8GB last year.
After a year, the RAM broke down, failed the hardware test.
I replaced it and though the hardware test is passed, the optical drive noise issue persists.
The problem now is: upon startup, it's normal to have the optical drive noise ONCE, but my machine produces a second noise when it can't show up the Apple logo within 3 seconds, i.e. the optical drive searches for the hard drive again. (for a total of 2 times, it lets out the optical drive search noise)
To be more specific, when I restart it after a weird startup, it's normal again with just one optical drive noise (Only occuring upon the first startup).
I'm afraid it might be a repeat of history and the RAM breaks down after one year...
    Thanks in advance.

  • My disc drive will not load up just makes a noise

hi thanks for the advice i think i may need a new drive was this has not help. but worth a try. however since doing this it sounds like a big fan has come on in my machine and will not go off.
    Reset the SMC multiple times.

  • Optical drive is making noise

The noise that it is making, sounds like its reading the disc and then makes eject noises and it repeats the process twice and stop. But it won't let me insert a disk in, is it broken or jammed. this problem just started two days ago when I was inserting a disk and then it ejects, i have tired inserting a dvd, cd, software program and then result to making the noise. so I restart the computer it started to make the noise describe before. so every time It wakes up it makes the noise.
I dont want to have to take it to an apple store, to get it resolved. I want to know if theres a way first before taking it in.

When ever a problem has to do with a "hardware" situation, i ALWAYS suggest bringing it into the apple store. The only thing i can think of is that it is jammed. If you have recently dropped your MacPro then its a possibility its  broken. I would suggest not trying to insert anything into the slot drive ever!   Even if you opened your mac you cant get to the optical drive. The only solution would to take it in.
         Hope this alittle.     - Nate

  • Machine will not boot; hard drive makes clicking noise

My G4 will not boot up.
    Here are the symptoms:
    It passed the hardware test;
    Will not perform a safe start - so cannot run disk utility;
Hard drive makes a clicking noise.
I'd appreciate any advice about how to proceed.

    Yes, as mentioned backup now. best not to use your Mac till you do. The drive may fail for good. Here's some tips on replacing your drive (they are pretty inexpensive now);
    This is by SDMacuser,
Even if you have never installed nor pulled a HD from a Powermac...... trust me....it is not all that difficult.
I can actually switch internal HD's among 3 separate G4 Towers I own in a matter of minutes (often less than 10 minutes).
Simply power the system down and ground yourself (a grounding strap is recommended or at the very least touching the metal frame to discharge any potential static electricity prior to actually touching the HD or any internal components on your system).
Disconnect the power cable to the back of the HD, then the long ide connector on the back of the HD / cable (pull straight back while grasping the black connector with 2 fingers ... do not yank the actual ribbon cable).
All of my HD's are mounted or bolted to their own metal sleds (either single sled or a dual sled) with 4 screws.
Unscrew the small screw (philips) holding the sled in place on position one below the ide connector or cable. And gently remove the sled & HD from the Powermac without bumping / damaging other internal components.
Remove the 4 screws from the sled itself holding the HD in place. Be careful not to allow the drive to fall once all screws have been removed.
Install the new HD (and make sure to address proper jumpers on the back of the HD itself.)
Now reverse this process with new HD for proper installation into the G4 Powermac.
    Any questions just post back.
btw ... there are a few QT demos on apples web sites showing how to do this.
     Cheers! DALE

  • CD/Drive makes strange noises

    Hi there
I've a 24' iMac (the first one out, white), and very often, it makes a lot of noise when I insert some CDs/DVDs. I recorded that. You can listen it here --> http://jerometonnelier.free.fr/_Divers/CD.mp4
Of courses, theses CDs (which are fine and clean BTW) are ejected a few seconds after.
Any idea what could it be?
    thx

I have the same machine with the same problem. Apple didn't want me traveling 90 miles to the nearest store so they sent someone to the house to replace the optical drive. This one seems OK. Took less than an hour and I got to see the inside of the machine which I would never attempt to open myself. All AppleCare covered.
