Slot loading DVD/CD-rw drive?

My dad has a sony digital camera that uses the little 210mb cd-rw's. Can I put those in the slot loading drive or is that a no no. Thought I should ask before trying it.
Thanks

iMac G3 DV Slot Loaded DVD 400Mhz.384RAM 10GB Hard Drive OS 9.2.2 - Tiger Install
Ok, I am getting Tiger Disks this week. I want to know the procedure for installing it, from beginning to end. I'm currently running OS 9.2.2 (latest updates) & I have the latest 4.1 Firmware Update. On this model, will I have to first Partition the Drive as suggested with the Tray Loaders ? Also, I read somewhere that I can upgrade to 1GB Ram on this model. Is this correct ? Help!!

There are some CD versions of tiger.

You could buy an external DVD drive. It needs to be firewire and bootable by Mac OS. If you have another PPC with firewire, you could try target Disk mode and installed tiger that way.
You need to figure out the level of your firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
Figuring out what level of firmware you have?
    1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.
    Apple -> Apple System Profiler
    2) Mac OS X, use the System Profiler.
    Apple -> About This Mac
click on the More Info... tab
    click on Hardware
    read the Boot ROM Version
    3) Open Firmware, boot into Open Firmware.
Power on your iMac while holding down commandoption+of
The first output line contains the firmware level. Mine reads:
    Apple PowerMac4,1 4.1.9f1 BootRom built on 09/14/01 at 13.18.04
    Copyright 1994-2001 Apple Computer Inc.
Some machine may not contain the firmware level but some other number which can be translated to the firmware level.
On my machine, I have 4.1.9f1.
    What firmware do you need?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
For a slot loading iMac, this article indicates that you need to be running 9.1.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75130
"The iMac Firmware Update 4.1.9 will only run on iMac computers with lot-loading CD or DVD drives running Mac OS 9.1 or later from a local drive. If you are using Mac OS X you must boot from a local Mac OS 9.1 or later writeable partition (not a CD, or network disk) prior to following the update instructions."
You can download the updates from the Apple site.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1387?viewlocale=en_US
For tiger, you need 256meg of memory. For panther, you need 128 meg of memory.
Also, I read somewhere that I can upgrade to 1GB Ram on this model. Is this correct ? Help!!
    Yes.

  • Slot-Loading DVD/CD player Booting during Sleep

    Hello Everyone,
I'm writing because I am currently experiencing an issue with my brand new MacBook. I noticed today that after I closed the lid on it to put it to sleep, it was trying to "boot" the DVD/CD player. Add to this the fact that it didn't just happen once, but every 15 seconds while it was in sleep mode, it would try this. It would cause the "Apple" on the back of the lid to light up only momentarily, and I would hear the disk drive gears as if it was trying to pull a CD into the slot.
This sits by itself. There is nothing "touching" the DVD/CD slot. The last thing I did was viewed an HTML file which I have been building on my desktop, from a Flash Drive. However, this was done several hours before the issue began.
Can anyone help me with this?

Do you have any peripherals connected to the machine via USB, like a mouse or something like that? The hard drive will make the same sound it does when the machine wakes up If you have something connected via USB and unplug it... even if you have a wireless mouse connected and move it. This has happened to me...

  • How to clean DVD/CD-ROM (slot-loading)?

I have a +*MacBook Pro*+ with a slot-loading DVD/CD-ROM. I have a DVD that won't play certain parts. I repaired and cleaned it and now it looks much better and the part that was not playing in the movie is now playing. However, now there are other parts that aren't playing. I used someone else's computer to see what might be wrong. The DVD played fine on theirs, everything played. This person suggested that my *lens might be dirty*. I don't know *how to clean it if it is a slot-load or where to find the cleaning supplies*. If anyone knows how to clean the DVD/CD-ROM, please let me know. *Thank you!*

Haven't had the need to clean my newest, but in previous MBPs have had much success with the brush-type drive cleaners sold by various makers. These have 2 or 3 really soft, small and flexible brushes attached to the working side of a CD, plus a content track that leads you on how to play the thing so the brushes get a good go over the lens.
In my now-deceased Feb'08 MBP, one of them enabled me to resuscitate the drive and let it play CDs and DVDs it was consistently spitting out.

  • How to clean slot-load drive?

I have a small issues that appears to not be software related. I am not exactly tech-savvy when it comes to apple products, thus I have had a hard time finding a solution.
Basically, I have problems ejecting discs. Firstly, no matter what method of ejecting I attempt, it will not eject fully.
After many attempts, it finally jutts out, but then gets pulled back in again. I have to contiuously eject until finally I can grab the disc and pull it out.
Sometimes running my thumbnail across the "dust flap" helps, sometimes it doesn't. When I look, it appears pretty dusty.
My Macbook Pro IS second hand. So it seems it came to me pretty dusty already.
So after all those pointers, I came to the conclusion that either the dust flap was dirty or sticky, and, maybe, the slot load DVD drive needs cleaning.
If not, can anyone point me to a permanent solution?
Otherwise, can anyone tell me how to safely clean the dust flap and/or slot load drive.

  • Changing / swopping my slot loading CD-RW for a DVD/CD-RW combi drive

Can anyone explain to me how I can change my slot loading CD-RW for a DVD/CD-RW Combi drive??
I know it's something to do with the IDE cable but if someone could give me a idiot's walkthru guide I would apreciate it.

You're better off posting this in the iMac G3 forum. This is the iMac Core Duo (Intel) forum. You might get lucky and find and answer here, but you'll likely find one much quicker in the proper forum. Best of luck.

  • 1.46 GB DVD-R in slot load drive??

I was just wondering if anyone knows if these small 1.46GB disks work in the slot loading drive of the new iBook. I have a recording I need played, but I am unable to watch on my computer because I do not want it to get stuck. Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks

Hello I bought an ibook in december so it should be under warranty. But i have placed one of these mini dvds into my ibook g4. Its stuck, not recognised by the computer what can i do to get it out? I'm in Egypt also so I dont know how to contact apple for help with out running up a massive bill? Can you help at all?
Mini DVDs don't work in a slot-loading drive, and you
may damage the drive by inserting one.

  • Using side loading dvd drive with mini dvds

I am setting up a holiday project for my neices and nephew to make video christmas cards using photos and video from all year. The video is stored on the mini dvds that my sister uses in her Sony video camera. I have never tried to load a mini dvd into the imac since it doesn't have a tray. Has anyone ever done this?
    Please advise.

You should not use the mini-DVs or mini-CDs in a slot loading iMac. If you do insert one of those discs you may have to disassemble the iMac and the drive to get the disc out.
BTW, this is the discussion area for the iMac G4.
    The iMac G4 has a tray-loading drive.
If your iMac doesn't have a tray it is not an iMac G4.

  • Upgrading iMac G3 400 DVD slot-loader to Tiger

My iMac's hard drive is dying and have purchased a brand new Seagate Barracuda 7200 8MB cache 120GB ATA IDE hard drive on eBay to replace it (haven't received it yet). Also am going to replace the PRAM battery and add 256MB of RAM. The Mac currently only has 64MB of RAM in it!! Will add more RAM when I can afford to...
I have checked the System Profile before the hard drive gives up the ghost and the firmware will need updated. The Mac has OS 9.0 on it. Had to buy a OS 9.0 full version disk on eBay (to install on the new drive) and happened to find the 9.2.1 update CD at a garage sale last year! Have downloaded the 9.2.2 update from the Apple website.
After I replace the hard drive and install OS 9.0, the 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates and the firmware update, here is my question:
Can Tiger be installed after the above installations, or would I have to install Jaguar (that's the other version of OS X I have on hand) before Tiger can be installed?
I want to use the iMac as an "all-in-one" DVD player for the most part. Tried playing a DVD on it before the factory hard drive started messing up again, but it couldn't find the video card or something. Am sure the hard drive is losing files as it's slowly dying...
    Thanks.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It's far better to start your own thread then resurrect one from the end of last year - if you do you'll get several opinions.
10.2.8 is a useable OS and if you have no legacy OS9 applications then you don't need to keep the OS 9 System Folder or Applications (the former of which allows OS X to run Classic mode). Just delete them. Before you delete OS 9 boot in to it ( Apple Menu > System Preferences... > Startup Disk ) and ensure that you have installed this firmware update (link). Technically it is required prior to OS X but will cause serious harm if you go above 10.2.8 without it. After that you can delete OS 9.
This iMac is going to be a pretty lean and not so mean iMovie machine. You might wish to consider giving her the full 1Gb of RAM and 128Gb Hard Drive.

  • DVD slot-loading not working

    Guys,
    Please help me.
Tried to insert a DVD but slot-loading failed to suck in the disc. I was worried that the disc might clog or be stuck up inside. Its a good thing a portion(very tiny) of the disc is protruding from the slot. I carefully(using pliers) to extract the disc and I did. Now, I don't want to insert any disc inside. Hence, I can't watch any DVD on my MacBook.
    Please help. Thanks.

Hi there, I would recommend scheduling a visit, provided that you have access to an Apple store and don't mind waiting for a little while for help.
I had the same problem with my MacBook over the summer. Whenever I would play a DVD, the drive would make a strange noise and often shut down completely. I was an idiot and got a DVD stuck in the drive; took it it the Apple Genius Bar and they had to remove it for me. It turns out that my optical drive has to be completely replaced and it is not under warranty. It's about $350 to fix, according to the 'Genius Bar guy.' I would really recommend getting it looked at before it gets worse.
    Good Luck!

  • DVD -R not accepted in slot load- HELP PLEASE

I am trying to burn an iMovie onto a DVD. I put a Memorex DVD -R into the slot load drive and it powers up and then spits it back out. I am able to burn CDs but have not yet tried to play a real DVD movie. PLEASE help. Is this a hardware problem or am I putting in the wrong type of DVD to burn? Thanks.

As long as your PB is equipped with a Superdrive and not with a Combodrive DVD -R media are th correct choice.
    You might want to check:
Your Drive's capabilities through System Profiler.
If burned/pressed DVDs are also refused.
Try another brand like Apple or Verbatim.

  • How can i load a 8cm dvd into my drive ??

    Hi
I am i being a little thick .... I have a sony handycam and it has 8cm dvd that i record onto.
How can i load these dvd's into my macbook pro, notebook ??
    Please help
    Many thanks
    Michelle

You can't. The MBP's slot-loading optical drive doesn't support nonstandard-sized discs at all.
If the camcorder has a USB or FireWire output, you may be able to use that to transfer videos from it to the computer. Alternatives include buying a tray-loading external optical drive that can handle the oddball discs, or transferring the videos to a computer that has an internal tray-loader, then transferring them to the Mac from the other computer wirelessly, via a USB flash drive or external hard drive, or via a burned standard-sized disc.

  • Help! My slot-loading drive will not take discs/d-drive not being read.

    I have a Toshiba Satellite U505-S2975.
When I try to insert a disc into my slot-loading disc drive, the drive will not grip onto the cd and suck it in. Nothing happens at all. Also, I noticed that the d-drive was not showing up under my computer. Does anyone have any possible solutions to this problem?

I tried the solution and it didn't work also, I have windows 7.

  • Optical Drive/slot loading drive not recognized by imac G5. HELP US!!!!!

We have an imac G5 that is maybe 14 months old. I know for a fact that the slot loading optical drive on the side has been used for three things in the entire time we've owned it. That's THREE TIMES in 14 months and now it's as if the drive doesn't exist on the computer. I've gone into the system profiler, it says there is no drive, try to put in a cd, no resistance, no noise and it doesn't even try to suck in any disc. Has anyone else experienced this? Have you figured out what to do? I can replace the drive myself, it's not hard but can someone recommend a good quality drive cause I'm not paying through the nose for parts from apple only to have them crap out on me.
    I feel ripped off!

We have 3 right now having problems. 1 just went into the ITech store to have a CD removed. 1 will not even accept a CD anymore and the other just makes awful noises and scratches the CD. These have been minimally used also. They said the Optical Drive is bad on the 1st one. Of course, we are 1 month past our warranty! I think Apple should be backing this but when I called about it they didn't want to help me. Even saying I had not registered them even though I had documentation from them saying I had. I know the feeling of being ripped off. Our company has purchased 20 of these in the last 1 1/2 years. You think we would get a little bit of help from Apple being we have purchased so many of their products in the last 20 years.
