Slow Airport Extreme 5th Gen Data Transfer

Airport Extreme Slow Data Transfer
When transferring files between PC – Nas, Nas – PC, & PC – PC my speeds are extremely slow (1.3 – 3.3mbps).  Files range in size from 350mbps to 4gb. Here is my set-up:
Acer Aspire 5532 Win 7 x64 (internal 5ghz nic)
Toshiba Toshiba Satellite C655 Ubuntu 12.04 (internal 5ghz nic)
Gateway GT5418E Win 7 x64 (USB 2ghz nic)
Iomega 2TB Nas
Seagate GoFlex Home 3TB Nas
5th Generation Airport Extreme
Firmware Version: 7.6.3
Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal
Channel: 149 (automatic), 11 Automatic
Radio Mode: 80211.n Only (5ghz) – 80211n Only (2.4ghz)
Multicast Rate: High (also tried low and medium)
Use Wide Channels: Checked
2nd Generation Airport Extreme 5ghz extended network
It doesn’t seem to make a difference if I am using the extended network or sitting 5 feet from the primary (either band) with the extended disabled. I ran a LAN Speed test: averaging 12 – 16mbps write and 20+ read.  Any advice would be helpful!
Thanks!

Is the original iPad capable of configuring the AirPort Extreme 5th Gen?
Yes, using AirPort Utility for the iPad.
AirPort Utility for iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad on the iTunes App Store
How to set up hdd with airport exreme with iPad
You do not set up a hard drive with the iPad, you set up a hard drive using Disk Utility on your Mac. Make sure that the hard drive is formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before you connect it to the USB port on the AirPort Extreme.
If you want to access data on the hard drive from the iPad, you will need an App like Filebrowser.

  • Usb hard drive connected to AirPort Extreme 5th gen not detectable

    hello
I connected a exFAT formatted HD via USB to my AirPort Extreme 5th gen.
I'd like to have access to it via my iMac as well as my gf's win laptop.
I only can se the drive in Airport utility but am not able to use it (copy files, read files I put on directly connected to my iMac).
    so what could I do?
    thank you in advance!
    cheers Chris

    Thank you!
That was a great hint. I can now access the external HD via my iMac.
on the other hand I'm no longer able to go online with my gf's win laptop.
there's no way to get an internet connection working.
I can see the wlan of the airport extreme but I am not able to log in...
    I have no glue!
    any help is highly appreciated.

  • Can't print from iPad to HP via Airport Extreme (5th gen)

I have an HP Deskjet 5900 connected to an Airport Extreme (5th gen), via the USB port. I'm currently running 10.6.8 and have succesfully setup the printer such that I can print wirelessly from my MacBooks, as well as directly from my MacPro desktop (which is connected to the AEB through the network).
What I can't do is AirPrint from my iPad or iPhone.
I've skimmed through quite a few questions on here, but haven't come across this specific scenerio. The closest one refers to printers that are AirPrint compatible, but I believe that only applies to wireless printers that are being connected on their own (without an AEB).
I really hope I don't have to download an app for this... it's built right into the iOS!
    Thanks for the help.
    Stephen

To use AirPrint directly from your iPad, you will need a printer that is AirPrint-compatible. Currently, the HP Deskjet 9500 is not one of them. There a few workarounds, but they will require obtaining an App.

  • I will have an AirPort Extreme 5th gen in a few days.....

I will have an AirPort Extreme 5th gen in a few days. I have an older model and when playing with settings, I found out that my Epson wireless printer can only see 2.4 ghz 802.11n networks.....
but I want to use the 5Ghz wireless.....is there anyway to bridge the 2 networks or connect to both for AirPrint's sake?
    Any suggestions?

but I want to use the 5Ghz wireless.....is there anyway to bridge the 2 networks or connect to both for AirPrint's sake?
If the printer can only support the 2.4 GHz radio band then, even if you could bridge the two (not possible), the printer would still not be able to connect ... and this is true for any wireless client whether it is a printer, computer, etc.
Wireless clients that support both bands can connect to one or the other typically based on received signal strength. They don't connect to both simultaneously.

  • Multiple WPA2 passwords on Airport Extreme (5th Gen)?

I have just purchased an Airport Extreme (5th Gen) and would like to set up each radio with a different WPA2 password. Is this possible?

Unfortunately, Apple does not provide this option.

  • Airport Extreme (5th gen) Buzzing / Hissing

I have a 5th generation airport extreme that I am using with Sky fibre broadband in the UK.  It is working fine I am however experiencing an issue that I have never seen with a router before which is that it making a hissing or buzzing sound under certain conditions.
It is not really loud and I have to be pretty close to hear it, I have not done any extensive testing however it seems to only be happening when connected to my Macbook Pro over 5GHZ wifi and some activity such as copying a file is taking place.  I have owned an airport extreme (5th gen too) previously and never noticed this then although I could have just missed it.
I have found similar cases searching online but these mostly seem to indicate that they had the router replaced only to experience the same thing on the replacement!  I have a genius appointment at the weekend but as I live a fair way from the store I’d rather not go in if this turns out to be normal behaviour, especially as it is (at the moment) really not that loud. Likewise however any kind of hissing or fizzing from a router just does not seem right to me and I’d also worry that it could maybe get worse.
    Anybody else experienced this?

An Extreme should be completely silent but a buzzing or sizzling noise can emanate from components in its power supply. It may change depending on the Extreme's power demands; a function of your wireless environment.
If it were new I'd want to exchange it for another because the noise can be annoying, but if it's out of warranty I wouldn't be concerned. It does not necessarily indicate an impending failure.

  • Airport Extreme 5th gen overheating

Lately we've had some very hot weather, and my AirPort Extreme (5th gen) has been dropping out in a weird way.
It drops all connections, the other connected AirPorts flash orange, but the Extreme just sits there with a green light like nothing is wrong.
Only unplugging and plugging in again fixes it. When this happens, it feels quite warm on the top, which makes me think it might be overheating.
Setup is basically AirPort Extreme handling PPPoE login bridged to a DSL modem, two AirPort Expresses wirelessly extending and bridging the network to Ethernet, no direct Ethernet connections on the Extreme. Latest firmware.
Worth taking it to the Apple store? Bought it in August 2012.

Well it is out of warranty unless you have applecare on a computer or ATV, that is current.
I would say the latest firmware is fairly bad for this setup.
Return it and the express units (I know less about them) to 7.6.1 firmware and do a factory reset and start over.
Ignore any future request for upgrade of firmware.
What airport utility are you running?
Downgrade is very easy from v6.. hold in option key and click the existing version number.. and a selection of firmware will be presented dependent on the model.
In very hot weather.. Like 4 days of over 40deg we just had in Melbourne.. you would find the top of the TC 15deg above ambient.. it is pretty hot.. more than 20 is serious.

  • AirPort Extreme (5th Gen) WiFi access point disappears but wired ethernet is ok

My AirPort Extreme SSID and access point "disappear" randomly from available WiFi networks. I had a 1st gen AirPort Extreme and never had this problem until earlier this year. I thought it might be a failing radio in the 1st gen unit so I used it as a good excuse to get a 5th gen AirPort extreme about 3 months ago. Same problem has been occuring; unfortunately it is random and I cannot get a handle on what/when/why it is happening.
For example, my iPhone 4S was connected to the network at about 1700 today and when I next checked the phone around 2115, no wifi connection and my network was not listed in the WiFi connections. The base station is away from other wireless devices (mouse, keyboard) and is about 10 feet from the nearest PC and monitor. Both printers are accessed via ethernet, not wifi. The strange and puzzling thing is that the PC, which is connected by ethernet to the AirPort Extreme, is still connected to the internet (I can browse, check email, newsgroups, etc.).
When I run the AirPort Utility, the base station is identified (AirPort Extreme 802.11n 5th Generation), there is an appropriate IP address, Version 7.6 firmware, and MAC address is listed. However, when I attempt to Continue or do a Manual Setup, I'm prompted for the admin password, the progress bar moves during 'reading from the Apple wireless device. Please wait...,' and then the utility reports "An error occured while tryong to access the Apple wireless device. Make sure your network connection is valid and try again. Error -6722.
If I unplug, wait, and reattach the power to the base station, WiFi becomes available again. When the WiFi connection "disappears", the LED light is solid green.
Any insights are appreciated; please let me know other helpful information I can provide.
    Scott

I have the exact same problem and it's driving me nuts.
I bought an airport extreme n last week and plugged it in, hooked it up to my adsl router by Ethernet, configured it to set up a new wifi network and got the green light. I use an iPhone 4, iPad 2, and Windows 7 PC with an N wifi adaptor.
The airport works fine for about 2 hours before the wireless network disappears without a trace. Green light remains on the base station and I can connect fine by Ethernet.
    "it just don't make sense"
    I hope it's not a windows-7-only thing, Apple.
PS. Updated firmware to the newest version, no difference.
Airport is near to a wireless phone so I set a specific wireless channel and frequency to prevent a clash. No change.

  • Extend my wired Airport Extreme (5th Gen) with a 2nd Wired Airport Extreme (also 5th Gen)

I have a 5th Generation Airport Extreme in my house hard wired directly from my fiber optic provider
Then I have that 5th Generation Airport Extreme hard wired directly to my Desktop Computer in a separate building in my back yard (using an Ethernet Cable run through an underground conduit).
Using that setup, I DO get Wi-Fi for my iPhone 4S & iPad 3 in that separate building in my back yard, but it is sometimes so weak, it really is not useable.
To improve the Wi-Fi signal for my iPhone 4S & iPad 3, I plan on adding a 2nd 5th Generation Airport Extreme in the separate building in my back yard.
I will disconnect the Ethernet Cable that is currently plugged directly into my Desktop computer & plug it into the 2nd Airport Extreme.
Then, I will use a short Ethernet Cable to directly connect my Desktop Computer to the 2nd Airport Extreme.
The desktop computer is an older Dell Dimension 9200 running Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3
With this set-up, will the strong Wi-Fi signal I now get in my house from the 1st Airport Extreme NOT be reduced?
And since the separate building is only 300 square feet, I assume the Wi-Fi signal there will also be as strong with the 2nd Airport Extreme being so close to everything?
Could someone point me to SPECIFIC instructions on how to CORRECTLY set this up so that the 2nd Airport Extreme will EXTEND my home network?

So, I should unplug the 1st Airport Extreme from the outlet before doing anything?
    Yes.
Since the 2 Airport Extremes will be in 2 separate locations, which do I plug into the outlet first?
I would suggest plugging the one in the house first, then the second one in the backyard building. Be sure to connect the Ethernet coming from the first into the second before power-on either base station.
Could I connect the Ethernet both to the 2nd Airport Extreme & then to the desktop, then plug in the current Airport Extreme in the house, then run out & plug in the 2nd Airport Extreme in the separate building?
The key is to leave everything powered-off; connect the Ethernet cables, and then, start by powering up the house unit, then the backyard unit, and then, the PC. Make sense?
P.S. I have the Version 5.5.3 of Airport Utility for Windows (using Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 3)
There does NOT seem to be a later version than that.
That worked great for the installation of the 1st Airport Extreme several months ago, so I shouldn't have any problems, should I?
There is a later version (5.6.1) for Windows, but required Windows 7 to run on. Since you can already administer the 1st 5th gen Extreme with the version you have now, you shouldn't have any issues continuing to use it for the second unit.

  • How do i remote access my parents Airport Extreme 5th gen

i am giving my 5th gen airport extreme to my parents who live 10 miles away,
is there a way i can remote into it when its at their house, to change settings, reboot it ?
    thx, jay
    -- added --
and can i do it from my chromebook, or do i need to use my macbook ?

i completly understand what you mean, and i scratched the idea..
    on another note,
when you say id have to remote in and then control a mac inside my parents house, (they dont even own a mac) , are you telling me that the airport extreme does not have a web interface ?
    for example.
now my parents do not have a static ip, so i can remote into their linksys router (providing the ip hasn't changed) and i go right to the web interface of the router and make changes. Note that all their computers are off while im doing this. their linksys is the computer..
the airport extreme that i would give them, one of the settings is "allow setup over WAN" ,, doesnt that enable a "web interface" so i can treat it EXACTLY like the linksys.
(( by the way the reason for the router swap is to update them from G to N ))
    thx, jay

  • Ethernet connectivity problem appleTV 3rd gen to airport extreme 5th gen

I have an airport extreme connected with Tivo via a Trendnet ethernet plugin adapter via electrical outlet, and it works fine.  When trying to connect my AppleTV 3rd gen to another ethernet port of airport extreme with another faster (85mbps) Trendnet ethernet adapter via a different electrical outlet, my extreme goes from green light to flashing amber light and my wifi stops working.  Only when I disconnect the ethernet and start using wifi for my appleTV, will the airport extreme start working again.  It's driving me nuts.
My setup is ethernet (no cable modem or DSL modem) with the ethernet cable that supplies internet to my house coming through a router device (I think it is?) that is plugged into my airport extreme.  However, I do have a double NAT setup as my ethernet service has its own NAT too.  I tried switching from DHCP and NAT on the airport extreme to bridging mode as recommended, but then my internet doesn't work and I get a flashing amber light.  So I went back to DHCP and NAT on my extreme and am ignoring the double NAT, and so the wifi works fine now.
I have done multiple hard resets of all devices involved including the appleTV, airport extreme (I have set up my network at least 10 times) and have unplugged my router device and disconnected the ethernet cable supplying internet to the house as well.  Nothing seems to work.  I called tech support, and originally thought that my 3rd ethernet port wasn't working, so they mailed me another unit, which doesn't work as well (in fact, I keep getting a message to unplug my cable or DSL modem or disconnect the battery pack to cycle it no matter what I do but that is for another time).
Would greatly appreciate any help.  Thanks.

If the Apple TV was originally setup for WiFi, I suggest that you reset the device back to default settings and then configure it again with Ethernet plugged in. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Settings
As a test,  connect a spare Ethernet cable of any length (that you know is working) from the LAN <-> port on the AirPort Extreme to the Apple TV for the setup.
Setup the ATV again and double check to make sure that it is operating correctly
Change the location of the ATV back to the desired location on the network behind the powerline adapters
If you have a problem now, the first thing to check is the powerline adapter and or wiring

  • I bought an airport extreme (5th gen) and have set it up today. However I am having troubles getting it to co-excist with my already set up ethernet connections which are necessary due to the size of the house.

Please let me know how I can set it up so it works along with my ethernet cables and downstairs network. I have several ethernet connections that I need to use as they are out of range of the network.

  • Solution: Airport Extreme (5th gen) and Comcast

Recentlty, I had a nightmare trying to install a new Airport Extreme (fifth generation) into a plain jane Comcast-iMac hardwire setup. Applicaton was to provide secure net for video streaming to Xbox and for printing as well as guest network for, uh, guests. After a struggle, I found both the problem and the fix.
Comcast modem direct wire to iMac was solid, but modem to Extreme WAN was no go with either wireless or wired connection between iMac and Extreme. After a few choice words hurled at the obviously incorrect "Ethernet cable not connected" message reported by the Extreme, it finally dawned on me to listen to what I was being told.
If the Airport Extreme couldn't see the cable going from its WAN port to the Comcast modem, then either my cable was bad or the two devices were "failing to communicate." I knew the cable was good (I tried both known good Cat 5E and Cat 6 ones), so it had to be the devices. Then, I remembered they first had to do a little dance (autonegotiation) to decide at which Ethernet speed (10/100/1000Mbs) to talk to each other. I found the settings page that controlled this process and switched it from Autonegotiate to 100Mbs Full Duplex and voila!
Comcast modem was Ubee DDM3513 (standard equipment for Comcast basic hardwire installation).
    Hope this helps someone else.

    +1
Thanks for the info. This sure helped me out.
I have CableVision Optimum Broadband, and was experiencing the same problems.
Changed from autonegotiate to 100Mbs and boom, internet.
I wonder if it will be faster work with 1000Mbs...

  • Airport Extreme (5th Gen) slows down my internet

I'm currently on 8mbps internet service. It's been giving good stable connections months ago, only until recently I noticed the drop in speed.
At first I checked with my ISP, they asked me to directly connect to my modem, and it's good (7.79Mb/s on speedtest). Then I tried to WAN back to my AE, connect on Ethernet, it slows down to 4Mb/s. On WiFi, the graphs on speedtest went up and down, the quite the same speed like I got from AE Ethernet.
So I guess this is be my AE problem?
By the way, I'm using CAT5e cable for WAN connection; using Airport Firmware 7.6.3, then tried downgrading to 7.6.1 (no improvement).

Sorry I missed you already put that in your opening post.
This problem has occasionally happened and there is no very clear reason for it.. the AE is more than fast enough to handle the full network speed of 100mbps fibre.. but some people hit this problem and seem not able to get around it.
Can you please reset the AE to factory and redo the seutp.
Use the 5.6 utility to do the setup. See below..
From 5.6 utility you can actually set the wan speed of the ethernet wan port.
Set it to 100mbit full duplex.
Make sure the ethernet cable is good.. maybe swap to be sure.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
