Slow album art import performance on new iTunes library

Hi-
I am experiencing very slow performance when importing album artwork on a recently migrated iTunes library. First some background:
I am running iTunes 7.5.0.20 on WinXP although the exact problem I am experiencing was happening on 7.4 prior to me upgrading.
I have just added a new internal HD to my PC for additional storage. I currently have 2 iTunes libraries on my machine. My original library on the old HD and a new library on the new HD. For the time being, I have an exact copy of all my music files on both my old and new HD which the old and new iTunes libraries reference repsectively. I can toggle between the two libraries no problem by using the hold down shift key method when starting iTunes. I am planning on migrating to the new library/drive (and deleting all music off the old drive) as soon as I feel confident that everything is working correctly on the new drive.
As a side note, I like to manage my own file naming/structure so I do not have the "Keep iTunes Music Folder organized" option checked and I have not consolodated my entire music library under the iTunes folder.
I am experiencing 2 oddities:
1. Whenever I manually import/paste album artwork for an album on the new drive, I get 2 dialog/status boxes for each track. One that says, "Writing ID tags..." and the next says "<Track name>". It takes a good 90 seconds to add album art for 10-12 songs.
On the old drive, if I import the exact same album art for the other copy of the same album, I only get the "<Track name>" dialog box and it completes 4-5 times faster than on the new drive.
2. Everytime I shut down iTunes on the new hard drive/library I get a "Saving iTunes Library..." dialog regardless of if I modify any tags, listen to music, or don't do anything at all.
On the old drive, I only rarely get this dialog, and only after I make obvious changes to the library.
I am really only concerned about issue #1, although my hunch is that these two issues are related. I have attempted to troubleshoot this a ton of different ways to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated.
thanks!

Just RIGHT click the song, and near the bottom of the drop-down menu, hit "get album artwork".

  • Automatic ipod album art import?

I have a ton of songs (over 30GB worth) already on my ipod without artwork, because at the time I loaded them on my version of iTunes did not yet have the "get album artwork" functionality...
Now that the new version of iTunes does, however, I've found that you cannot update the album art automatically on the iPod, but I don't understand why not?
I've read other places that this is because "apple is trying to protect getting art for music you did not buy or acquired illegally" BUT I think that is bogus/ludicrous because nearly all the music on my ipod is ripped from CDs I own, so there's no reason I shouldn't be able to get artwork for them if I want to...
So, is there a way to get album art imported onto the ipod automatically, instead of doing it manually by downloading individual albums and then dragging it into the art window in iTunes? Seeing as I have almost 40GB of tunes this would take about 10 years that I don't want to waste. Any third part programs or pug-ins to help with this?
    Thanks,
    William

i've downloaded a few manually and they do show on the ipod.
anyway, is there really no other application that can help with this?
i UNDERSTAND that itunes cannot do this...i'm asking about anything else out there that could help. it seems so stupid that itunes doesn't have this function...even for simplicity sake, if people forgot to put artwork on files in the beginning and then wanted to add them later...

  • My iPod 4G, after reset and iOS 6 install, now has only some album art after syncing music. Even music directly downloaded from iTunes is missing album art. (I'm using iTunes 11.0.1 on Windows Vista)

My iPod 4G, after a reset and iOS6 install, after I recopied and synced music, is missing most album art. Even songs directly downloaded from iTunes are missing album art. I'm using iTunes 11.0.1 on Windows Vista. My iPod isn't full. Whenever I go to "On This iPod" and add album art and sync, nothing happens. Please help :/

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Cover flow into album art and how to control iTunes from another app.

Hi all 2 areas of concen, one is coverflow/ album art and the other is itunes controller:
I have searched but cannot find the answer to this:
    1) I have some songs with album info already, and I used iTunes to get the album art for coverflow etc. ... some songs from the same album did not have the album category filled in, I go back and fill it in: now how do I get iTunes to recognize the album art so it shows up for the newly corrected songs?
    2) In coverflow, iTunes picked the wrong album cover, can I manually fix it/pick the right one?
    3) will coverflow only show album art for those albums recognized by iTunes, or will it use album art that I get from other sources and add manually? And what will show up in my ipod?
    and lastly
4), is there anyway to control iTunes without switching apps (if I am working in Word or safari and want to skip a song, etc)...is there an overlay controller?
    TIA

Copy the entire folder from one drive to the other, change the path that iTunes is using to access the library.

  • Album art synching incorrectly on new computer

I recently moved my iTunes library to a new computer. After some initial issues, I had iTunes loaded to my satisfaction. By this I mean that all of my songs were there, and most of my album covers were there (some were there after reloading the library, and others were there after using the menu option to "get album artwork"). I have now been in and out of iTunes several times, and the artwork there looks good. I then synched to my device (the first one I tried was my iPhone 4S). When synching for the first time, since this was a new computer for the device, iTunes asked me if I wanted to replace the tunes based on the contents of the new iTunes library location, and I responded in the affirmative. The synch worked in terms of all of the requested music being there and associated with the correct albums and playlists, but the associated art work was all over the place - some was correct and some was incorrect. There was no logic to what artwork was associated with what album. I then resynched, and a couple of albums corrected but not many. I then tried the same process with my iPad, and the results were similar (interestingly, the associations were different, i.e. different artwork was associated with the albums). Again, some albums were correct and others weren't. The information on iTunes is still correct (right art with every album).
How can I correct this? I want to get it correct before synching with other devices (my iTouch and my old "master" iPod -- an 80 gig model which has all of my tunes which is now relegated to being a master backup device).
    Thanks for any solutions/suggestions, etc.

Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.

  • Please help - how do I import music from my ipod into a new itunes library?

    Hello
I would very much appreciate it if someone could tell me how to get the music from my old ipod mini into the new itunes library on my new laptop.
The mini was previously sync'd with my old PC which died so my files are only present on the ipod. Upon loading itunes, the software is only letting my sync the ipod providing I wipe it (obviously not desirable...)
    Thanks for any support, Andy

Connect your iPod to your computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" as you already know will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod to a computer
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    SharePod Windows Only
    iRepo Mac and Windows
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums
... I assumed that if I played the 1st track, it would continue to play the rest of the album (as iTunes does on my Macs and PCs),...
You assumed correctly, and it should continue to play the rest of the album in order. Does this happen to all your albums. Have you tried restarting the tv.

  • How to burn songs from one itunes account to import into a new itunes acct

I have set up seperate playlists for my children under my itunes account. However, my son is now older and receiving itunes gift cards and we want to set up his own itunes account but don't want to loose the songs we have purchased for him under my itunes account. We want these songs to still be available for him to sync to his ipod so we think we need to burn the songs to a disk so they can then be imported into his new itunes account. He doesn't want to loose track of his itunes money nor do I want him to be able to purchase songs using my itunes acct credit card info without my knowledge, therefore, we think we need to set up a new itunes account for his personal use. Any guidance would be appreciated!

Not necessary. If you want to copy song files to a new computer, copy them to a USB flash drive, and then from the flash drive to the new computer.
we think we need to set up a new itunes account for his personal use. Any guidance would be appreciated!
He should definitely have his own iTunes library, be it on the shared computer or on his own computer. As for a separate account in the iTunes Store, that is really up to you, depending how the family shares.

  • How do you import songs into a new iTunes library from a Touch?

I downloaded iTunes on a new PC laptop but, I'm unable to import the songs that are on the Touch, to the new iTunes library.
The songs that are on the Touch are all iTunes purchased songs and these songs are based in a iTunes library that is on the old laptop that no longer works. iTunes on the old laptop cannot be accessed and there was no cd-dvd back up done for this library.
When the Touch is connected to iTunes on the new laptop, the songs on the Touch do appear in a music folder under the device heading which is fine but, because these songs can't be imported into the new library, they cannot be backed up as far as I know.
Otherwise, everything regarding iTunes is working as it should be on the new laptop.
Since I'm dealing only with iTunes purchased songs, iTunes, and a Apple device, there must be some way of adding the songs from the Touch into the new library.
I've done a Google search about this and any of the suggestions I've tried, haven't worked.
The OS on the new laptop, is Windows 7.
If someone can offer some help on this, it would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Your suggestions worked.
Had to do the authorize step first and then I was able to re-download the songs into the new library.

  • I created a new iTunes library and now cannot find the original one, which has a thousand albums on it!  What happened?

I created a new iTunes library to put speciald songs into, using the instructions on the Help section of iTunes.  NOW - I cannot locate my original iTunes library, which has a zillion tunes on it!  When I open iTunes to "select a library" the only choise I am given is th one I just created, which only has one album on it.  What happened to the original iTunes that I just got the way I wanted it, with millions of tunes on it??????

    Hello b dean jones,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  I found an article that lists the default locations for iTunes files:
Where are my iTunes files located?

If you looked in the default locations and are still having trouble finding the files, I recommend following the steps in this article:

How do I consolidate a song into an album, each purchased separately, in my iTunes library? iMac OS X 10.8.5. iTunes Help has been no help.

However, my troubleshooting issue is that I also want the songs in my concert playlists to go in order of how they were performed at the concerts.
    Give them a track number.
Each time I number them within the playlists the song's number also changes within the Library Music list.
And?  I'm not seeing the problem.
However, I can not figure out how to make true copy. I've already tried dragging the song to my desktop, then dragging the new copy back into iTunes. I've even tried renaming the duplicate copy and dragging it into iTunes. Why won't my iTunes make an individual duplicate copy of a song?
How do you have iTunes manage your music?  If you drag a song to the desktop it may just be moving the file to the desktop.
Command+R to reveal the file in Finder.  Command+D to duplicate the file in Finder. Drag the duplicate to iTunes to add the second copy.  Not that I totally understand where the issues lie and feel this is likely not the best remedy...

  • Can't sync iPad or iPhone - new iTunes library wants to erase contents!

    Hi,
I have an iPhone, iPad & iPod touch & all are synced using my iMac. I have the latest version of iTunes and for some reason, I am unable to sync my devices because I'm getting a pop up window that says that the devices are synced with another iTunes library. I can sync with the current library but the contents of the device will be erased.
I looked in my iTunes folder: User ->music -> iTunes and found the following folders: Album Artwork, iTunes Music, Previous iTunes Libraries (imported to this iMac from my other 20" iMac but both library folders indicate they were created on Dec 8 2010 ... bought the iMac in Sept) & iTunes Media.
There are also a couple of icons in the iTunes folder: iTunes Library, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb and iTunes Music Library.xml.
Everything synced just fine until recently. I added a couple of mv4 format movies to iTunes and can watch them in iTunes. I'd like to transfer them to my iPad so my kids can watch the movies while travelling. The syncing issues started AFTER the movies were added to iTunes so I don't know if this did anything to the original library. In the summary panel in iTunes (when looking at the info of the device connected) I have generally had the box checked off to manually manage music & videos. The box is no longer checked. Any attempt to check it and apply the change also results in the prompt that I'm dealing with a new library.
I don't have a lot of photos, music, apps on my devices so if I have to start over using the new library fine ... just can't figure out where things went wrong.
Is there a way to let me revert back to my old settings/library without messing things up????
    Thanks for your help.
    Brent

Thanks for the suggestion on the Time Machine ... it's on my list of items to get.
I've noticed under my iTunes preferences -> advanced that the iTunes Media Folder Location window has both boxes checked (Keep iTunes Media folder organized & Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library) and the file path is users/name/music/iTunes/iTunes Media. Also, in the preferences -> general window the library name is the default name ... there's no other iTunes library that I can see so I have no idea as to where this "new" library is located.
I really don't want to lose any music, apps or photos by going with a new library. All my other settings in my iPad have been preserved & my music in iTunes on my iMac is fine and I can even watch the blasted movies that I added to iTunes ... just can't seem to get anything to sync without having to use this new iTunes Library ... getting frustrated here.
    Take care,
    Brent

  • How best to add music to new iTunes library on external hard drive?

I just created a new iTunes library on my external hard drive and would like to add songs that I already have stored in a folder on the external hard drive. Should I simply select all of the songs and drag them over the iTunes library folder or drag them into a specific part of the library folder? Or, should I open the new iTunes library and use the import function? I do not want to get the two libraries (powerbook and external hard drive) intermingled.
Also, should I "keep iTunes library organized" turned on?
    Many thanks!
    RB

You could leave keep library orginised selected - all it does is rename and reorganize files in your music directory to artist-album-track#-songname format.
Since you want to do this, and still keep your libraries separate, here is one option.
Change the itunes music library to a directory on your external disk.
Then anything new you add will go into the library on the external disk.
When you want to add something to your laptop disk, just change the
music library location back to where it was.
iTunes can be a little confusing. There is the itunes "library" file, which is actually more like a catalog file. Then there is the itunes "music library"
which is where itunes puts music if you have "copy to library" selected.

  • ITunes keeps creating a new iTunes Library instead of going to my actual iTunes Library on my external drive.

    My old computer died.
Luckily, my iTunes library is stored on an external drive.
My new machine is Windows 8 and my old machine was Vista, but I don't think that should cause any problem.
When I run iTunes, it comes up like a fresh install on a new machine... every time. By default, it creates an iTunes folder in my local drive and as such, has no music in and is a 100% blank slate.
When I point it to my external drive, and then import the library, it does it. All my music shows up -- after a long time, but it all shows up.
If I shut down iTunes or reboot, everything goes back to zero again.
The most disturbing thing about this is that I can't back up properly, because -- although in Preferences it's pointed at my external drive -- it's backing up my iPhone 5 to the local drive in Windows.
Any idea what's going on here?
I've gone through this process 5 times already and it's always the same.

There are two main components to the iTunes library. The media folder which you can adjust via Edit > Preferences > Advanced, and the database file iTunes Library.itl which is normally found in <User's Music>\iTunes. You can choose or create a new iTunes library by holding down shift as you launch iTunes.
In some cases third party software can interfere with the way iTunes updates its files meaning that either iTunes forgets the previously chosen location, or that the active database is deleted. AVG anti-virus and Sony VIAO Entertainment Platform typically interfere with the database. McAfee has been implicated in the corruption of iTunesPrefs.plist.
See Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash for more details on how you might recover after the library vanishes.
You may get some improvment by hosting your entire library on the external drive not just the media. E.g. Create a library at X:\iTunes where X: is the drive letter, then move the media into X:\iTunes\iTunes Media before adding it to the library. This will make it easier to backup the library to a second drive and move it between computers when the time comes.
