Slow and Erratic Finder with Bad Folder Dates

I have an old PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.5.8. It was recently started with a bad date (January 2, 1970) and run without reseting Date & Time. Now the Finder takes 20-30 seconds just to open a single folder and way too long for other Finder related activities. Applications seem to run okay, once they finally launch.
Any suggestions on how to remedy the problem would be greatly appreciated.

It does that with my Powerbook when I let the battery run out fully. Go into Date and Time, and if the 'Set date & time automatically' is already ticked, untick it and then retick it. If it isn't already ticked, tick it and set it to wherever your time zone is. Then restart your computer.

Is there a list of the files and/or folders that contain Settings and Preferences which can be copied from the old system to the new?

with your cc apps you should try to use the sync feature.  that's never worked consistently for me, but when it does work, it's helpful.
there are preference folders and presets and settings that you could copy but you're better off installing fresh because a common problem for people with adobe program issues is a settings issue.

  • Internet too slow and erratic to update software

I have had an iMac G5 at home for about one year. The problem is my internet connection (DSL) is too slow and erratic to download files bigger than 10 mb. Can I get software updates on a CD? Or is there another way to get those downloaded files? Zipped, maybe?

Hi & a warm welcome to the forums!
Quite often getting them direct is far better than SU, this works on my Dialup asccount most times...

  • Safari extremely slow and pages load with errors

Not sure if this is related to other Safari posts, but when I try to load a page from many sites, including this one, the speed is extremely slow and there are invariably errors reported on the bottom status bar. I'm on a new Mac Pro, and I haven't added any add-ons to Safari or changed system settings. My internet connection is DSL on ethernet, and there are no problems with email or on my old G4 using Explorer 5.1. At this point G4's Explorer is light years faster than Safari on this machine. I'm going to try Mozilla Firefox, but is there any hope for Safari?
    Thanks,
    Peggy

    Hi Peggy
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Try this to speed up Safari.
First, make sure you are not using Rosetta. Go to Safari's info panel (Application folder>Safari.app>Single click>Apple Key I). If Rosetta is selected, uncheck it.
    Network Connection
Go to the System Preferences>Network panel
    - Location - set up a personal location by clicking on the drop down menu and selecting "add a location". Use a name familiar to you. Once established, select "apply".
    - Next, click on the "Show" drop down menu and select Network Port Configurations. Only Ethernet ought to be checked. Move it to the top of the list (you can drag it). Select "apply".
    - Back to the "Show" menu, depending on your connection select "Ethernet". Click on the TCP panel. There, enter 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 (separate lines) in the DNS servers box and select "apply".
Creating a personal location, plus adding the DNS codes seems to speed things up. Otherwise, the "automatic" function has a tendency to "search" for available locations.
In the Finder, go to your Utilities folder and select "Terminal". Once the screen is open enter lookupd -flushcache and press return. This clears out the DNS cache. Once done, quit Terminal.

    Hi Lethal,
I would agree with you, except for one problem: my MacBook under Leopard does not have this problem. The Spotlight search box moves lightning fast, right along with my natural typing speed (of avg. 80WPM).
My wife's iBook G4 does the same thing as my iBook G4, responding with laggy results. By the way, I should have had myself type in TextEdit beside the search window to show the huge difference in response. The kind of laggy response is what I'd expect of a system bogged-down with too much stuff open at once; it's indicative of an over-taxing a system, insufficient RAM, or an inefficiently designed software package.
Which of those is the answer, I'm not sure. I learn more towards an inefficiently designed software (OS feature, in this case). To be honest, I'd rather have the old Spotlight than the new one at this rate.
But, like I said, MacBook seems to work fine, and speeds along with me in the search box (under Leopard and Tiger). MacBook is currently running Tiger, though, so I can't make another video comparing them. I do a lot of video editing on my MacBook, so Leopard is just a handicap; that's why I downgraded to Tiger.

  • MDX - how to calculate the sales between a certain period and the currentmember with a max date

    Hi all,
1)I need to calculate the sales between W1 and the currentmember, but the max date should be W20. How can I solve this in MDX?
MEMBER [Measures].[Q1 act.period to date sales] AS
    Sum(
    [Date invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].[Bonus week of year].&[2015]&[1]
    [Date invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].Currentmember
    *[CurrentSalesPeriod]
    ,[Measures].[Sales amount]
This is the measure I have, I need to add the max date is W20.
2)Also, when I calculate the sales between [Date invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].[Bonus week of year].&[2015]&[40] and the currentmember, for example being [Date invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].[Bonus week of year].&[2015]&[20],
he calculated the sales between this period. However, in theory this is not possible because W20 < 40. Is there any way I can put a constraint on this that he only calculates the sales if the currentmember is > the start period?
    Thanks in advance!

Y, you can put a check on to determine if currentmember > start period.
Firstly, your period keys are composite of year and period (indicated by the two ampersands in the fully qualified date above). If your period keys were non-composite (eg 201501) it would be a simple matter of
    IIF([Date invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].Currentmember.properties("key") > [Date
    invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].[Bonus week of year].&[2015]&[1].properties("key"),[Measures].[Sales
    amount],null)
There are advantages of having two period attributes on the dimension, one with a fully unique
key and the other with just the period of fy, but that's digressing.
With your composite keys, you could use a calc like the following for the SUM()
    Sum(
    [Date invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].[Bonus week of year].&[2015]&[1]
    [Date invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].Currentmember
    *[CurrentSalesPeriod]
    ,IIF([Date
    invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].Currentmember.parent.properties("key") +[Date
    invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].Currentmember.properties("key") > [Date
    invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].[Bonus week of year].&[2015]&[1].parent.properties("key")+[Date
    invoice].[Bonus calendar - Week].[Bonus week of year].&[2015]&[1].properties("key"),[Measures].[Sales
    amount],null))

  • Creative Cloud and  remote places with bad internet.

Adobe should take note that some of us travel to places with bad internet.  Constant Creative App update that cannot be cancelled are very annoying. Also, not being able to just download the program as you could before makes it very hard to use creative cloud sometimes.
    Solutions?

a month to month cc subscription needs an internet connection once every 30 days, not a constant connection.
an annual subscription will work without a connection for 99 days.

  • Why is Safari 5.1.2 so slow and freezing constantly with Lion???

After the last software update, Safari has been acting strange. It slowed down enormously (I keep on getting the colored beach ball) and it freezes many times for lots of seconds. I've tried other browsers and they don't have the same problem.

First, if your system is up to date, you should have Safari 5.1.3 and Mac OS 10.7.3.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
As Guest, launch the application(s) and test. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on some Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.) Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Restart and flashing finder with a question mark

    Hi,
My mac just died and now i am using my sisters computer. I was typing up some documents and listening to music. The computer then proceeded to freeze which brought up the spinning beachball. After a few minutes of waiting for the computer to do its thing, nothing occured to i did a hard start up. Upon restart i came to a dark grey screen and a flashing finder logo and a question mark. i waited some more and got nothing. Ive managed to lose my rescue disc and im not quite sure what to do. is there anything i can do before i resort to apple services?

Oh that's not good. Is the other Mac also PowerPC based? I'm not sure about "compatibility" with those since I've never used an Intel-based Mac yet. At least, don't own one.
The Target Disk Mode-enabled computer should automatically show up as an external drive, whether it is bootable or not.
If it doesn't, then there must be some serious damage to the data on the drive, since it isn't being recognized by the other Mac.
I think your next step would be to use DiskWarrior if you have it, or borrow it from someone who does. It works wonders. I don't have it, but a colleague does, and I used it on a failing drive, and wow. I was able to save my data. I was able to successfully boot once after the repair, but on second boot, it failed again. So at least I was able to get my things off of the drive.
That would be the most important thing right now.
Also, because a drive doesn't boot (and Mac doesn't recognize it) doesn't necessarily mean the drive is bad. It just can't find the "commands" and data to let it start up and run the things on your drive. This is from experience. I have had a drive that would never boot, but the drive was fine. I had to reformat it thought and start from scratch in that instance. But the drive was not damaged. It had a bad block or partition in it.

  • Mavericks slow and erratic

    My Mavericks experience so far:
Slower launch and response times (to the point of annoyance) for several applications e.g. Mail, Safari, System Preferences.
Erratic dock behavior (freeze) and appearance (random changes between monitors) when using multiple monitors.
I thought only Microsoft could mess up OS launches... Great job Apple!

What font are you using? Does the same thing happen when you use the keyboard directly?
You might try trashing the .plist in Home/Library/Preferences which has Keyboardviewer in its name.
Personally I've never had any problem with Keyboard Viewer like you describe. There is no alternative that I know of.

  • Cursor slow and erratic

Is anyone else having problems with their cursor being slow, erratic or jumping to another place on a line or even skipping to another line? If so, can
this be corrected? This happens half the time and I am always correcting.
When using yahoo or google search, I may want to add a word between the words I already have but as soon as I do, the cursor jumps
to the end of the line and I have to delete and start from scratch.
I'd love to know if this is a common problem.
    Thank you,

    4 Gb Ram and an AMD athlon 2600.  By the way, I got those cpu usages from KDE4's display. If I use htop  they are as follows;
    kwin      4%
    X           1%
    firefox    8%
    thunderbird 5%.
The KDE4 display is accessded through the 'Run' utility.
These seem more appropriate.  I don't think it's a hardware issue as I've had episodes of this in the past.  I think it has to do with the packages that were upgraded.  I just can't believe that I'm the only one experiencing this.

  • Image MF4350d Scanner slow and erratic

My mf4350d has suddenly started scanning slowly and the scanner starts and stops when scanning . This occurs with the document feeder or  or when scanning from the platen glass. The  scanning using the mf tool box 4.9 or using program called paper port. Both programs have worked successfully in the past. In addition I have a epson scanner/printer which does not have any problem scanning at a acceptable speed.
Any Ideas whether this is software or hardware?

    Hi Vis.
I know that slow scan speeds can be frustrating.  This issue could be caused by a few things, such as TWAIN conflicts, USB hubs or switches, or faulty USB cables.  The items I recommend checking, first, would be the length of the USB cable.  We recommend that the length be 10' or less.  If you're using a USB cable for the Epson, try connecting the cable between the MF4350d and the computer, or if you have another cable handy, swap it with the current cable.  If you have the units connected over a hub or switch, remove the MF4350d from the device and connect it directly.  Also, try connecting to a different USB port on the computer.
Should the above troubleshooting steps not resolve the issue, we recommend that you Contact us for further assistance.

  • Cold Hard Disk - iPod won't boot with bad folder icon.

I have a 5G iPod, and after a couple months of use, I found that the iPod will start to refuse to boot if it's anything less than 60ºF. I use it a lot, and right now it's cold out, around 40ºF.
We're a poor little white family up in costal Maine where the temperatures are low in the winter, around 20-40ºF. When I drive around in my Jeep Grand Cherokee, I have the heat turned up so that I'm comfortably warm, but my iPod isn't. It will play music fine when it's warmer than room temperature, but I will notice when driving, sometimes the music will just stop -- I look at the iPod and notice that the whole thing is just frozen up - no controls work, the lock doesn't show/disappear when i turn on/off the hold switch, and when I reboot it it will show that silver apple, then light the screen with a grayscale image of a 'Folder with exclamation point' icon, seemingly not finding the iPod Operating System on its hard disk. The unit will refuse to work again unless i bring it to higher temperatures. When it does work, I have to keep it under my leg when I'm driving, and that sometimes doesn't work.
It will work fine indoors, unless it's been in my bedroom overnight, which gets down to 55-60º at night (i have a room thermometer in here), which is normal for us.
Also, if I hook up the iPod to my computer, even if I force it into Disk Mode (grayscale DO NOT DISCONNECT logo), the computer has a hard time mounting it.
I can't imagine that the hard disk wasn't designed to operate in such a normal temperature range for us distant poor Maine residents. There must be something wrong with it. Will I need to send it away?
