Slow and problems opening programs

Just installed Lion 3 days ago and its loads and runs very slow.  Don't understand why.
Secondly when i go to Safari it will not go to the home page when I open, it goes to the last page I was in when i was browsing.  Same with with Excel, word, etc.  It opens the last document I close when i load the program

  • Seeing extreme slowness and problems opening some files

    Hi,
    Starting about a week ago (and I can't recollect any coincident update or something I might have done), Java is real slow to start.  This is true for any Java programs that I click on and even from the shell in an xtrem.  In the latter case, the command "java -version" can take up to 4 or 5 minutes to execute. Right after that, however, it runs quickly.  So only the first invokation of Java after startup exhibits this problem.  After that, Java runs just fine, full speed, etc, etc.
    The other problem is more general.  When I click on the hard disk icon, the dialogue window open and displays and then locks up for a minute or two with the little busy icon form of th cursor.  Basically, the finder is locked up.  This lockup does not affect any running program so I can do something else while the finder is taking its time (if you look in Force Quit, it will tell you the finder is not responding).  Over this past week while I was at a conference, I downloaded several large *.tgz (zipped tar archives) which is a very normal thing for me to do.  When I clicked on any one of them, the finder hung.  Trying to restart the finder failed and I would have to reboot the machine.  Using the shell inside an xterm, I tried simply "file filename" which should instantly return the filetype.  But the command hung instead.  And "kill -KILL" from the command line wouldn't kill it.  But what I discovered is that if I just let it be, after something greater than 5 minutes and in some cases 10 minutes, it would return with a correct response.  After that I could untar the file without any problem.
    I don't think I've been infected with any kind of malware.  I have Sophos' free Mac scanner.  I updated it profile do I had all the newest signatures and then let it scan my whole disk which pretty much takes over night.  It found nothing.
    So, any ideas at all?

    Exact same problem with my 2010 MBP 2.4ghz 4gb ram 10.6.8. iTunes said update was needed, Software Update ran with various updates including a security update, truthfully didn't pay much attention, I always install the Apple updates. After the restart it took 3-4 times longer than normal to get to the login screen, same to get to the desktop but I'm familiar with that occurring on update restarts. Unfortunately it got worse from there. Performed a full shutdown and startup. Same long boot.  After the desktop finally loads every mouse button press received a 2 minute beachball. I use menu-meters and both processors are under 10%. Waited a few minutes for disk utilities to launch, repair permissions estimates 3 hours for a typical <10 minute process. Activity monitor shows nothing over 10% CPU most of the time however ReportCrash pops to the top often. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. BTW zero problems until this update.

    Have you checked that you are opening the new version? To check this, open a Finder window, select Applications in the sidebar and open the Pages app with the new icon, so you will get the new version.
    Your problem is caused because Apple decided to keep the old iWork applications version after installing the new one. The only thing you have to do is to open it from the Applications folder, or drag the new version to the Dock, so you can access to it quickly

    I bought 2 months ago Mac book pro 8,2  intel core i7 2760 QM  CPU@ 2,4 ghz 8 core,  I installed boot camp, 64 bit , and everything is running verry slow, boots up verry slow, programs, browser runs very slow, and i have a problem with my wirless connection, i get , after a wile of usage "Limited Connection" and i have to reconnect to network ( on other notebooks i dont have this issue) .
    My computer runs slow because of my Hard drive 5400 rpm? 
    And how can i preserve my battery, are there Spare batteries on the internet for this macbook.
    Sometimes when i play alot, my computer gets very hot. What cooler do you recomend for macbok pro, i heared that fan coolers aren't verry good.
    If i use my macbook pro alot , it can break or something?
    <EDIT> I forgot to tell, i cannot update to my lates graphic card software, i can''t update anything. I download the update and it tells me that its not compatible with the hardware. (and yes, it is the right version 100% compatible)

  • Error message when publishing and problems opening output file

    I have 5 projects linked together. When I publish one, I get a message that the files listed below are linked to the open project, and one or more of these projects may require exporting. I have tried to open these files and choose File | Export | Project to | but the options in the list (Flash 8 and Flash CS3) are both grayed out--on every one of these files. I'm publishing to Flash 9.
    I didn't think much about this message until a few reviewers said they can't open the project, or when they do, they don't see my playbar on the skin.
    One more thing--when an IT person was trying to help one reviewer open the output file, the IT person said "Oh, there's a problem with the code in line 25." I guess that's the html code? I'm not a programmer, but I can look at html code. What should I be seeing there in line 25?
    Is their problem opening the output file(s) related to my message about possibly needing to export files? Why might they be having problems getting the output file to open?

    Hi Sam
    It depends on a number of things. Are you certain you uploaded all the files involved? If not, there will be problems.
    The message about the linked files is quite simply advising you that you have links from that particular movie that will expect to find the files being linked to.
    If a person isn't seeing playback controls and you have included them, it's likely you haven't provided the correct link for them to open and play the file. Typically you provide a link to the HTML page Captivate creates. As long as all the output files are in the same place on the server, you should be good to go.

  • Problem opening program and opening a photo and saving a photo

    I am continally getting the message "cannot open \device\hardisk\DR4"
    I am lost as to how to fix this.
    At this point I am ready to delete the program and reload it, but I am concerned that even if I do that, I will still get the same problem.
    I have given up on trying to contact Adobe.

    This happens to me when I leave a card-reader plugged into a USB slot without a memory card in it.  The solution for my situation is to either unplug the reader or put a memory card in the reader.  If your computer has a built-in slot then I’m less sure how it works.

  • Mountian Lion really slow and all the programs (itunes, skype, FaceTime) take an age to open or they don't open at all

    Just installed Mountain Lion on my iMac runned smootly for the first 3 days and now everything is blocked, the only programs that works are mail safari and apple store, all the rest uses 3-4 min to open like skype and itunes or they don't open at all.

  • Computer running slow, and problems downloading new software

    i have a powerbook g4 and it running slow at times. my dad bought a new one and gave me this one and my powerbook runs half of the speed of his. this is my 1st mac and i am trying to figure it out. my mac tends to freeze up sometimes when i am online. my cursor indicates that it is loading, but it takes a long time to load. most of the times i just force quit safari and try it again. also, when i try to install software off of the net, it ask me to pick a software to use to open it. i have tried almost every software on the computer and i have yet to run the installer. my email account is on hotmail, and my mac will not allow me to go straight to hotmail.com to retrieve emails. hotmail tells me that i have to download new software to be able to retrieve my mail, and that brings me to the above problem with downloading software. my mac runs on mac OS X version 10.3.9 if that is any help to you, thanks

    Welcome! You bring up a lot of issues but most suggest simply a need for some routine file maintenance. One of the best resources is here:

    It would be helpful to know a little more about your PB, like the processor speed and the amount of RAM installed. Both are available by selecting "About the Mac..." from the blue Apple menu at the let end of the menubar.

  • Problem opening programs/documents

    Whenever I try to open something on my laptop(toshiba satellite L355), there is a box that pops up asking what program I would like to use to open whatever it may be( word, pdf's, itunes, notepad, etc..). Most of the time, I dont know what to use to open it, so i cannot use or access alot of things i need to. Is there any universal program that will open everything or is there a way i can reset it so it knows what to use to open it automatically?

    1. Which Satellite L355? There is a label on the bottom.
    2. Make sure that file extensions are visible in Windows Explorer so that we can communicate.
       Show or hide file name extensions
    3. Attach a picture of a typical message to your replay and tell us the name of the file that you attempted to open.

    I purchased Adobe Creative Cloud 5: Design Standard on disk and when I transferred everything to my new computer my adobe products wouldn't open. I remember to register my product and can now get the serial code, but I can't find the disk to download the product. Is there anywhere I can go to get this download or is there something special I need to do? I appreciate any help you can possibly give me!

  • Computer freezes 9/10 times on start up, running slow, and a lot of error messages

    Hi guys,
    Im new tot his site, but am trying to find someone that can help resolvemy computer issues.
    it started off running really slow and freezing during programs, and then i started getting error messages every time ibooted the computer, and now 9 out of 10 times i try to bootup orrestartthe computer will freeze and just shows a black screen. only 
    computer is a HP pavilion tx2000 (notebook)
    i have used a forum website called spyware ware warrior to try and resolve the issues, which they help check for malware but were unable to resolve what is wrong...
    i would apreciate any help you can give.

    Hi Steve,
    I think the most likely answer to solve this problem would be to reinstall the operating system using your Recovery Discs ( not the Recovery Partition on the Hard Drive ) as there are probably corrupt Windows files caused by the malware infection that the system file check cannot detect or repair.
    I realise reinstalling the OS can be a pain, so you may want to try the following first.
    Start the notebook and let Windows fully load.  Hold down the Windows key and press R.  In to the Run box type msconfig and hit enter.  In the following window, click the Start up tab, remove the tick next to each start up item and then click Apply to make the change.  Reboot the notebook and see if it now starts and runs normally.  If it does, re-enable one start up item at a time, click Apply and reboot to check if it still runs ok.  Keep doing this until you encounter the problem again and you will know the last program you set to start is causing the issue.
    If the above process doesn't help, the best option left would be to reinstall the OS - Make sure to backup all your personal files etc first.  If you don't have your Recovery Discs, you can order a replacement set of using the link below - these are around $30 in the US.

    Since installing LTR 5.4, which I've now upgraded to 5.6, I've encountered repeated slowness and malfunctions in operations, especially when using the Compare View function and the Tab key to open and close the right and left side panels.  Such problems never arose during two years of using LTR-4 and nothing else has changed on my computer.  I have a pretty simple system with only a few plug-ins, which are usually not in operation.  I have 12GB of RAM in my Windows 7 PC.  I could illustrate these problems with screen shots if you would tell me how to submit screen shots.  Otherwise I will try to describe the problems in words.
    The problem is clearly cumulative, growing worse as usage time passes.  Compare View feature gradually slows down and eventually seems to choke as my work session proceeds. If I Exit LTR and re-enter and start all over, things will work normally for maybe 30 minutes, but then the Compare View feature begins to become very slow to respond.   In a recent example with my screen full of thumbnails in Library mode I highlighted two images to compare. LTR started to open the Compare View screen by first having the top row of thumbnails disappear to be replaced by the "SELECT" and "CANDIDATE" words in their spaces  (but no images), but Compare View never succeeded in gaining control of the screen. After some seconds the top row of thumbnails reasserted its position and the Compare View windows disappeared. But LTR kept trying to bring them back. Again the top row of thumbnails would go away, Select and candidate would reappear, try again, and give up. This went on for at least 2-3 minutes before I tried to choose File and Exit, but even that did not initially want to respond. It doesn't like to accept other commands when it's trying to open Compare View. Finally it allowed me to exit.
    To experiment I created a new catalog of 1100 images.  After 30-40 minutes, the Compare View function began to operate very slowly. With left and right side panels visible and two thumbnails highlighted, hitting Compare View can take half a minute before the two mid-size  images open in their respective SELECT and CANDIDATE windows. When the side panels are open and two images are in the Select/Candidate spaces, hitting the Tab button to close the side panels produces a very delayed response--25-30 seconds to close them, a few more seconds to enlarge the two images to full size. To reverse the process (i.e., to recall the two side panels), hitting Tab would make the two sides of the screen go black for up to a minute, with no words visible.     I've got the same issue and it affects all my adobe software.  You are not alone as I have seen several postings looking for the answer to this help request.
