Slow as dirt

I'm using CS5.5 on a 12 core MAC with 64 gb memory on a RAID 0 with Western Digital Black Caviar drives 2 TB.  The video is 1920x1080i my menus are photoshop layered and have never been an issue before, but this 12 core MAC is rendering the menus like it was a comadore 64.  2 days to render a menu?  I just can't help but think I am doing something wrong or my settings are screwed up.  Any thoughts?  Thanks

I do not know Mac's, but do have some questions:
For those Menus, what are their pixel x pixel dimensions, 1920 x 1080?
You state that those are PSD's. Do you have any Motion Background on them?
I do agree that the time to Render the Menus is not even close to what should be expected. My guess is that something is wrong. If you were on a PC, I'd have a few more questions on the computer's setup, but do not think that any of those things would apply to a Mac, and for that OS, I would not really even know how to ask them.
Someone else will very likely have some useful thoughts, and the answers to those two questions might be helpful to them.
Good luck,
Hunt

  • Imac 27" is slow as dirt

    I have a 2011 27" iMac 3.4 GHz
    Intel Core i7
    16GB 1333 MHz DDR3
I'm trying to export a 40 minute video, no effects, color correction or even edits and it is taking hours upon hours to export.
i look at the activity monitor and CPU looks like this:
    % User: 56
    % System: 1
    % Idle: 42
    System Memory:
    Free: 11GB
    Active: 2.22 GB
Graphics card: AMD Radeon HD 6970M
All while Final cut is exporting. Am I doing something wrong? Is it supposed to go this slow? The codec I'm exporting to is h.264.
I've tried switching from doing this on external Firewire 800 drives to my ssd internal drive to my hhd internal drive. All have the same results, same speed.
Also, I don't know what this means but under the Disk Activity the writes out/sec is 0 and the Data written/sec is 0, sometimes switching to 512 kb.
    Please help!

My SSD has 150.44 GB Free and 99.7 GB utilized
Final Cut Pro X is the only application running.
No antivirus software. No mackeeper. I have Onyx and MemoryKeeper and Memory Clean but I installed those after the fact and I have them set so they only run when I go in manually. They're not running in the background.
I just read an article by Larry Jordan on how to speed up exports by using optimized media on import into FCPX and then to export to a separate hard drive at Apple Pro Res 422(same as optimized media) and it ran 10 times faster than when I was trying to do it with H.264.
But I looked at activity moniter and even though the Apple Pro Res 422 is a 10 times bigger file it was only using up half the CPU. But even still why can't Final Cut use more CPU to really crank this thing out? It took 45 minutes to import to optimized media then export as apple proRes 422 a 40  minute clip.
Attached are some screen shots of Activity monitor while it was exporting a master file.

  • Blackberry Pearl- Why it's the worst phone ever made

Here's why I think the Blackberry Pearl is the worst phone ever made.
    1. I can't get photo's off of it. My G1 takes a few seconds. I've worked with this Pear for hours upon hours cannot get my photo's off of it. The Desktop manager really bites too no help there. I really dislike this phone. The software just as bad. I guess they were on the move when Desktop manager was getting written.
    2. The phone on occasions would lock on letters instead of numbers. There wasn't an intuitive way to get it unlocked. I found it more intuitive to get a my return from the IRS than it was to get the phone back to dialing numbers.
I'm having my kids dress up as a Blackberry Pearl for Halloween. I'm going to make a Halloween Movie Freddy Kruger attacks people with Blackberry Pearl the topper scene features unsuspecting Pearl user getting tied up and has them attempt to copy their photos off to a PC and the video gets put on Youtube for Christmas.
    Very unsatisfied with your product.
    Don Quixote

I want to join the fun here and list all the different reasons why I'm very unsatisfied with this phone.
The actual phone part of this phone is pretty slow.  It accepts a phone number almost 3 times slower than I can type it in.  Even typing a name on their handy search bar takes forever to get a result.  If I type to fast, it just ignores a couple of my numbers so I have to delete and retype, at the same super slow pace.  I'm guessing that it searches all sorts of contact and history lists to give me cool suggestions, and that's what makes it so slow.  Either way, it irritates me to no end that the basic reason I have this thing is slow as dirt.
All 3rd Party and Blackberry apps require the Blackberry data service.  Even though there's WIFI on this phone, you simply can't connect to anything except the Browser (and even the Browser requires some setting changes to bypass the upsell screen).  This phone CAN do 3rd party services and other applications without the Blackberry data service, but they just don't allow you to.
Sometimes my phone just turns off.  I don't normally mind the 3 minute boot up process, but when I'm in the middle of something and my phone turns off for no reason, it just compounds my frustration.
The keyboard freezes up all the time.  After a good 1-5 minute "please wait clock", I finally get a message saying there was an error and my input application had to be reset.  Sometimes it doesn't quite reset all the way and I have to pull the battery and again wait for the long boot up process.
Its a little unreliable.  Besides the phone turning off at random and the keyboard freezing, I still have problems other problems.  My bluetooth turns off and sometimes doesn't come back.  Once I had to get a new phone sent to me in order to correct that problem.  Pressing buttons doesn't always get a response, especially the green "call" button.  If the phone is bogged down, it just ignored commands, which is pretty frustrating especially if you press a button and accidently double enter a command that is both the "on" and "off" options.  Also, sometimes the screen fades out (like its suppose to) but doesn't come back when you press keys.  Or the external notifications just don't turn on.  It somestimes just doesn't read my memory card.  The zoom feature on my camera also got stuck.
Other small gripes involve having no caps lock, the SureType never learning from my typing ("Hey" always goes out as "Get"), its overall slowness, the looseness of the back casing, the low quality camera, and so much more.
I don't suggest this phone to anyone.

  • VENDOR_MAIN delta replication

    Hi Experts,
Is there any practice how to update vendor changes from ERP to CRM 5.0?
    (Business object: VENDOR_MAIN.)
    Thanks in advance.
    A

    Anzett,
There is no standard BDOC object that does ECC to CRM delta replication.  Honestly I don't know why this wasn't provided as we built a custom BDOC to handle this on CRM 40.
The other programs you mentioned, probably will have to be "copied" and modified to suit your needs.  However honestly they personally don't work that great and are slower than dirt due to the reading the change document tables on the ERP side.
    Take care,

  • ZV6100 Pavillion RAM Upgrade and user manual

I have an older Pavillion ZV6100 (EC356UA) that has some issues hanging and is slow as dirt.
I have located one 256 MB RAM card and I would like to upgrade it.
I am getting conflicting data on memory websites as to how many slots are available for RAM and how many pins the SoDIMM is. I think it's 200 pin.
When I look at the computer properties it lists the Total Physical Memory as 512 MB, but I can only find the one 256 MB RAM SoDIMM slot.
Researching on HP's website is futile, they don't provide any documentation for the product, instead they substitute a different model. Very frustrating.
Any help would be greatly appreciatted.
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00364919.pdf
According to chapter 1, you can install 2 x 1 GB of PC-2700 memory.
You have to remove the keyboard to see the other 256 MB memory module.
See chapter 5 for accessing that module.

  • Eureka! iPod mini + Mac OS 9 = Virtual PC!

Several months ago my girlfriend bought me an iPod mini as a birthday present. Great gift, except that I am still stuck back in the stone age with as old OS 9 box (beige G3), so compatibility was an issue, as the minis do not support OS 9 or USB 1.1 in any way, shape, or form, purportedly. For a while I was just using her Windows machine to sync my iPod, but I wan't happy with this solution.
I posted a question to this forum about the possibility of running the iPod through Virtual PC with Windows 2000, since that OS is supported. I got a couple of responses that suggested that it wouldn't work, but none of them provided a compelling reason.
Well, to all the naysayers: it works! I finally got up the nerve (and freed up the HD space) to install VPC 5 with Windows 2000 on my old G3. Then, with VPC in the foreground I took a deep breath and plugged in the iPod... and voila! It mounted as a drive in Windows, and I was able to transfer files to it using Anapod Explorer. And it charged the iPod, even though I was using USB 1.1 and received an insufficient power message when I plugged it in with the Mac OS. I was also able to access my iTunes library by setting VPC to mount my Mac volumes as shared volumes for the Windows environment, so I didn't even have to transfer my music to the VPC disk image.
An imperfect solution, to be sure. VPC is still slow as dirt on an old G3, and I experienced several crashes through this process, but I finally achieved a degree of stability that was good enough until I can get a new MacBook. I wasn't able to install iTunes because the version of Win2K I was using needed a massive service update that seemed doomed to failure because of the crashes, but I have no reason to believe that it wouldn't work.
So to anyone else who finds themselves in this situation, I won't make any promises, but this seems to do the trick for me.
Beige G3 Desktop   Mac OS 9.2.x

You can't use an iPod mini with Mac OS 9. First and second generation full-size iPods will work with Mac OS 9's iTunes, as will third generation full-size iPods which are running version 2.0x of the firmware.

  • Chrome - New Message - Corrupt Editor View

I like the Chrome browser. But when in the forums, if I choose "New Message", I get a broken editor view and the toolbar is missing most of the options. This is a snapshot of what I see:
The "font styles", the horizontal line item, and everything after the "Insert Image" option are all missing.
I'm forced to use Internet Explorer when I want to post anything that isn't just plain text.
Now I don't know if this is something wrong with my Chrome installation, but there are no errors thrown anywhere, and Chrome updates itself so frequently that a reinstall is probably pointless.
    Any thoughts on this anyone?
Thoric (CLA, CLED, CTD and LabVIEW Champion)

Not sure if it helps any, but I often see that view for a split second when using Firefox.  That is usually when I am offsite and therefore my computer likes to be slower than dirt.  Maybe Chrome is getting stuck at a point in the loading process?

  • How to Restore Menu Bar Bookmarks with Time Machine

When I woke up this morning, my menu bookmarks had magically changed. I read other support posts, but when I quit Safari and went to Go- Go to Folder, and put in:

ps: My computer has been slow as dirt since I installed Mavericks. And Word 2008 doesn't work with it)

This is the Mac Pro forum, it's pretty much about Mac Pro-specific issues.  You can probably get better answers faster at Mac OS & System Software: Apple Support Communities
"ps: My computer has been slow as dirt since I installed Mavericks. And Word 2008 doesn't work with it"
Many older computers will slow dramatically when saddlerd with a newer OS. My practice has been to only "upgrade" when I need something only the newer OS supports. This keeps my older wraps running and the confusion factor down...
If your system is truly "slower than dirt", maybe you need a (new or used) Mac Pro!

  • Itunes 7 wheel of death slowdown

i opened up itunes today ( yesterday every thing worked fine )
first my lib was corrupt so i had to import every thing again now it is running slow as dirt when i try switching songs or subjects the app hangs for about
30sec to 90sec every time no matter what i try it keeps hanging on me. any clue why!
this happens on my dual g5 since that is the one i use for music.

Yeah, I'm getting the color wheel of death as well, but only when I open certain songs. The weird thing is that it is usually around the same numbered track on each album. (ie. it doesn't ever happen with tracks 1-3, but almost always does on certain tracks. I can also listen to later tracks as well. It's just these middle tracks on albums that the color wheel seems especially attracted to. Any answers yet?

  • Sorting property lists

Okay, I know that you can use the sort() function to
    automatically sort a
property list - damn handy at that. The trick is, this
    function sorts the
list in order of the properties. So i fI want a list of
    records sorted by
Name, then Date, then Amount, I simply have to make sure that
    the properties
for each record are declared in that order. Here's the
    kicker: Say I want
the user to be able to change the sort-order on the fly. Give
    them buttons
to change it to sorting by Date first or Amount first. Or
    make it possible
to have the list sort in reverse order. Are there any easy
    ways of doing
that? (Short of going through each record and rebuilding them
    from scratch
in a different order each time - that would probably work,
    but it'd be slow
as dirt on a large data set.) This sort of feature is built
    into the OS
(both Win and Mac), and even a feature used in Director's own
    Cast window in
List mode, so one would think it'd be available to scripters,
    but I can't
seem to find a way to do it.

    > What do you do with it once it's sorted? Can you just
    display the data in
    > the sorted order but leave it as is in the list?
Yes, as a matter of fact, the original list must remain
    unsorted. (Entries
must stay in the order they're added for cross-referencing
    purposes.) What
I've been doing is copying the master-list to a new list for
sort-and-display purposes. The display list also has a
    variety of filtering
options to only display some of the master-list items by
    type. But my
method for generating the display list copies entire records
    as a whole,
rather than building each record item by item, so I have
    little say over
which order the properties end up in. (Copying the records
    item by item
takes about 5 times as long, processor-wise, I've found.
    While there's a
slight delay when generating and sorting the filtered lists,
    it's still
within the acceptable range. The delay caused by trying to do
    them item by
item is far too long to be acceptable. I'm not sure if
    interfacing with a
database would be better or not, but it sounds like that's
    just getting
overly complex for this purpose. I may have to look into DB
    management for
other reasons, though, so it's not out of the question. I'm
    just surprised
that there isn't an option within the program to do something
    like this,
    like:
    propList.sort(#name)
That would be a really elegant way to handle it - if only, if
    only... Oh
    well.

  • My 5s's data has been running dirt slow! Phone company says it's a hardware issue. Has anyone else had the same problem?

I've had my iphone 5s since Oct. Since I've had it, it will go through these periods where the data just slows to a crawl. So slow that I can't even access the App store until I get back around wi-fi. And this is in areas that I am recieving full signal and it's indicating that I have access to 4G. My wife has the same company, but has an iphone 5 and has not been having this problem. I called the phone comany and they advised me that it's likely a hardware issue. Has anyone had a similar problem with the 5s? If so, what can I do?

As silly as it may seem, I have had success simply turning my phone completely off and then back on again.  I was using an iPhone 5 on Sprint and would run into this issue a couple of times a month.  I would see the data indicator on my phone switching from 3G to 1x and back again several times over a few minutes while just sitting still.  This would happen regardless of whether or not I had a full strength signal or not.  (Remeber that if your signal strength is below 2 bars, dots, etc, you will not get great data speeds).
Try rebooting the phone.  If this does not help, pay close attention to the signal strength meter at the top of the phone.  If you and your wife are on the same carrier and it turns out you get different signal strengths while standing in the same location, you may have a problem with your phones antenna.
If these suggestions do not help, post back to the discussion.

  • Macbook is extremely slow and goes into overdrive when nothing is open

Starting a few weeks ago my MacBook has been acting strange. A few times it will go to sleep, and I am unable to wake it up again. Now, even after running Disc Repair and restarting my computer everything takes a really long time to load (like a few minutes to switch between applications) and the internet is even slow to load (and on my iPhone my connection for internet is just fine). My computer has also been going into overdrive a lot even if I don't have anything open. This is seriously affecting my school work as it takes me 5x as long to do ANYTHING on it. Any suggestions?

By 'overdrive', I assume that you mean the internal fan is running at high speed. You didn't mention the 'spinning beachball'. Does that also show up frequently when you try to switch applications?
Both are symptom of the CPU working at a high % of utilization, and that is often caused by an out-of-control application program process or 'stuck' print job.
    1. With no applications running after restarting your computer, open Activity Monitor, view All Processes, and click on the % CPU column to sort programs running in Highest to Lowest CPU activity. If you have any process using more than about 15% CPU momentarily, or anything showing in red as 'Not Responding', you should Force Quit the process, and restart the computer. Check again to see if there is anything else using a high % CPU. Viewing Flash Video on a web page, such as YouTube often causes my fan to come on and CPU utilization to exceed 25% (I've got an older Core2Duo MacBook.)
    2. Do you use the computer on a soft surface such as a blanket or pillow? That can restrict airflow. If the computer is used in a dusty environment, maybe there is a significant accumulation of dust & dirt inside the case that is restricting the fan and/or airflow.
    3. Check free space on your hard disk. (About This Mac, More Info, Serial-ATA) Less than 15% free (e.g. less than 18Gb free on a 120Gb drive) is likely to cause slow system performance as the hard drive has to keep looking for free space.
    4. How much RAM memory do you have? (About This Mac) If you have 1Gb or less, more RAM will increase apparent performance because processes will not have to write memory contents to hard disk, such as when switching applications. But unless one memory stick has recently gone bad (which should generate a Kernel Panic screen) you're not going to notice a SUDDEN decrease in system performance.
    5. Have you loaded recent Apple software updates? Have you searched Apple Discussions for other 'slow performance' threads for your computer model? I've taken to waiting weeks or longer before installing the latest Apple updates after checking the forums to be sure that any issues reported do not affect my MacBook model and OS combination.

  • My CS4 seems to be running SLOWER on 64-bit.  Any ideas?

    I'm running:
    AMD Phenom 9550 Quad-Core processor 2.20GHz
    4GB Ram
    Windows Vista 64
My graphics card: Dual SLI Geforce 9600 GT (1GB Ram)
I booted up CS4 last night expecting to see an amazing difference, and well I did. It ended up seeing slower redraw rates and it chugs when I pan through big images.
I have a feeling there's some setting that I'm not doing right. I updated my Geforce drivers.
In the Nvidia control panel, there are a ton of settings for the Photoshop CS4 applications that I've been playing with but cant seem to get a favorable solution. Anyone have an Easy Button for this?

That's assuming PS was build to not do it. Scratch disks and display tiles are a fundamental principle of the program and I don't consider them a workaround for anything. You know, over in the video apps forums we poor souls have been begging for years that After Effects would be half as smart as PS in that regard. I also tend to think that your alleged "do it all in RAM" would fall apart as soon as you begin to deal with a number of images and document sizes that exhaust that RAM. One might say that in foreseeable time RAM will be so dirt cheap, that 32GB machines will be commonplace even for home users, but it's not there yet. And then it's the question: Do I burn 1000 Watts of electricity even in idle state just to work on a monster machine with lots of RAM or do I use just 300 Watts on a normal system with a scratch disk and energy saving options. It's the same gag as with multicore processors or those monstrous graphics cards (Quadro CX, anyone?): the marketing may tell you, you need those things, but it must not necessarily do anything for your personal workflow. Those arguments really have no value if this Quadro CX has nothing to do most of the time or of 16 cores only 1 barely even peaks while you paint and likewise you wouldn't need those tons of RAM, if all you ever do is adjusting a few photos from digital cameras. You have to differentiate between "average" users and extreme "power users", but nowhere is it written that 1% of power users must or can dictate what's good for the 99% other users, a dilemma software devs face every day... I would tend to think that 64bit and its possible advantages are in fact very low on the list for those 99% of users, but other things are much more important to them.

In short, no. This is not something that is done. You do not say what Mac you have but indicate OS 10.6.8 so I suspect an older machine. Dirt and dust can accumulate around the fans and exhaust ports and can lead to increase temperature.
Apple genius bar would be able to help you over the counter if it is a continued concern.
You can try a simple SMC reset to see if improves your situation.
