Slow as **** internet

Ok this is my first Macbook....and may be my last.  Straight out of the box this Macbook Pro (15" i7 processor) cant even get internet speeds above 130kbps.  What the ****!!!  Anyone know a solution?  Sometimes it starts out at 2 mps then dips and stays.......my normal PC is fast.

This is a very big topic, and your problem could be anything. To start off, I'd look at this article:
http://thenextweb.com/apple/2010/10/08/what-is-slowing-down-your-mac/
In particular, look at the Measure for Pleasure paragraph. Keep an eye on Activity Monitor, concentrating on Disk Usage and Network for any spikes that look suspicious. A specific application could be robbing your speed.
Some questions you might want to ask:
1. In which situations do you notice the slowdown? When you're not connected to the internet, and using applications? Or when you're using a browser?
2. When you're using Activity Monitor, which activities demand the most attention? What happens when you disable them?
3. How many applications are you using at the same time? One? Three? Ten?
Post your questions and answers here, and we'll get to the bottom of this.

  • Firefox 23 loads slower than Internet Explorer 10

I was doing a speed test between Firefox 23 and Internet Explorer 10. If you visit http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Performance/PenguinMark/ all addons are disable on Firefox 23 and still slower than internet explorer. Why is that?

I don't know how to interpret my results. I got 1 in Firefox (no snow visible) and 8370 in IE (blizzard). Maybe I'm blocking something?

  • Can the wireless card in my mac wear out and slow down internet connection??

can the wireless card in my mac wear out and slow down internet connection??

Yes the WiFi card can wear out but not what you would really call wearing out like a pair of pants do. It can start to fail causing the connection between your computer and your Wifi router to slow down, IE transmit and receive less data in a given time period. And then it will fail completely.
But as to your internet connection being affected by a failing WiFi card no that can't happen.
If you turn the WiFi off and connect the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable does your internet browsing and downloading speed increase? If it does then there may be something wrong with the WiFi card in your computer or the WiFi section of your router. Hard to say which.
If after connecting the computer to your router with an Ethernet cable and your speeds do not increase then it is a problem with the router or on your ISPs end.

  • Slow wireless internet

Ok, so i recently reinstalled my Windows 7 and im having wireless problems now which is didnt have before.
I now takes along time to load pages and my downloads are extremely slow (100KBps). . Im currently sitting on 4 bars which is normal but it is really frustrating because of how slow the internet is. I use the RealTek 8185 extensible 802.11b/g wireless device. My modem is MI424WR for Verizon FiOS.
So since i reinstalled windows i need to re-download my games. Some are downloading at 100KBs when usually its 8-10MBs. This is strange because my internet connection is normal as before the install besides the speed which is wht im trying to fix. When im browsing its slow aswell..infact it sometimes reaching 5 bars which is even better then normal..I have installed most of the windows updates. (been 3 days since i reinstalled)

MrsMark, I'm sorry to say, but you are grossly misinformed as to the nature of IP addressing and NAT as used in home routers.
It really does not matter if someone gets a hold of your external IP address when all it points to is the WAN-facing side of the router. At worst, all they can do is send a denial of service attack your way, but Verizon would block that. They can't figure out who you are or where you live, because Verizon will not release that information without a subpoena (and sometimes, not even then, as illustrated by their actions when the recording industry got thousands of subpoenas trying to identify "John Does" who they had seen sharing music online.)
Knowing internal IP addresses is useless because they simply cannot be seen from outside the home network. That is what routers do; they physically separate the internal network from the external network while still allowing limited communication between them. Besides, nearly everyone has an internal network with addresses in the 192.168.1.x range; that IP address range was specifically reserved for internal networks with no direct access to the Internet. There are only 255 addresses in that range; it would take seconds to ping all of them and find which ones have computers... assuming an attacker could even get inside the network, which they can't
(unless they drive up to your house and access the network over Wi-Fi or something... but if that happens, you're already in a world of trouble.)
If you were a "black hat hacker" and you had my IP address, you still wouldn't be able to track my actions online. You'd have to find a way to infiltrate Verizon's plant and install snooping software there if you wanted to do that. Good luck getting past the multiple levels of security.
To conclude, there is nothing in either of the OPs screenshots that is sensitive in any way. His external IP address is public information. His internal IP is worthless to any attacker (and if they were in a position to need such information, they wouldn't need him to post a screenshot to get it.) His MAC address is equally worthless; we already know he has an ActionTec router, and that's all the MAC address signifies.
In short, he has nothing to worry about from posting those shots, and frankly, it's disingenuous for you to claim otherwise.

  • Why the Safari navigation is getting slow on Internet after using it for a while ?

Hi, If i reset the modem, the Safari navigator is working very fine at the beginning and all the pages are appearing very fast on the screen. But after a while, I can see that the Internet pages appear more slowly and even I need sometime to wait until 10 seconds or more before a page appear on the Safari navigator. I have made all the cleaning possible (Console, Safari preferences, Disk utility, Keychain Access) into the iMac but it seems that something can get into the computer and slow the Internet navigation. Do you have an idea where the problem come from ? I am wondering if there is something wrong into the Console like the ~/Library/Logs or into var/log. Unix ? Terminal ?

    Had the same problem...
Saw some other (ssh) broblems beind discussed and tried the fix for them and it fixed my "You can’t open the application “BovadaPoker.app” because it is not supported on this type of Mac."
    Try this
    cd /Applications/BovadaPoker.app/Contents/
    sudo chmod g+rx BovadaPoker

  • Very slow wireless internet when running on AC power

Since installing Leopard (and then updated to 10.5.5), I have been having really incredibly slow wireless internet access - however it is only like this when the AC power cable is plugged in. If I pull the power lead out and work on the battery, then the internet starts working again almost immediately. The airport signal isn't lost at any point, so I am a bit confused.
I have reset the PRAM, entered new DNS servers (opendns.org ones) and even set my RWIN lower as described here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5670430 but with no noticeable result.
My macbook pro is 2.33ghz Core 2 duo. I'm using a Belkin n1 router with WEP encryption. The idea that the power supply would affect my wireless internet like this seems really bizarre. I would be grateful if anyone has any idea what could be going on here.

Well l.e.o, since no one else is taking a stab: check your System Preferences > Hardware > Energy Saver settings. See if Settings for Power Adapter, Optimization, is not set for "Better Performance." It may be set for "Better Energy Savings," and the settings for Battery are set to Optimized for Better Performance?

  • Slow Wireless Internet (BT homehub)

Hello, I have a problem with slow, wireless internet with the BT Broadband Homehub 2 (black). I am using a 1g Macbook 2 running 10.4.11.
A quick summary of my problem: Recently, there was a fault on my line that was affecting my phone and my broadband. BT quickly repaired the fault and reset the broadband as I complained about the speed. Connection monitors and speed tests all say that everything is running fine although I Firefox and Safari are loading pages extremely slowly; streaming of media is impossible and it sometimes times out before I can even send webmail. When I first got the connection it was lightning fast (so much so that friends commented on it when they came over). I have see that lots of people seem to be having this problem with Macbooks and I am 99.9% certain that the issue is a mac software/hardware issue. I have tried EVERYTHING that has been suggested in other threads
1.I have manually entered different recommended DNS figures
    2. I have changed the wireless channels
    3. I have manually entered the DNS figures supplied by the ISP
    4. I have rebooted with default settings
Nothing seems to work. I'm a little bit out of my depth with this sort of thing but I have noticed that the IP address supplied by my router to airport settings doesn't correspond with the IP address in the
ISP info. I tried changing that but then I couldn't connect at all. Somebody must know what is going on here as I've seen this problem quoted on this and other forums. Is it a problem that apple are aware of? Somebody please help as this is very very frustrating.
    Thanks everyone.

Hi Jocksil, and a warm welcome to the forums!
BDAqua, what does you psot mean?
No idea if it worked for the OP, some never return to tell us what happened.
My suggestion should speed up a lot of connections, and never hurt anything, but not sure what the mentioned problem was, but my suggestion won't likely help connecting in the first place, unless it really is connecting, not just getting anywhere once connected.
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.254.3.183 behind the scenes.
Feel free to start a new topic to attract more helpers to your particular situation, here's a link if as is often the case, it's hard to find out where to do it...

Some of your extensions might be the cause of the problem. Try starting Firefox in Safe Mode then going to Tools--Addons--Extensions to see if one of your extensions is causing a problem.

  • Airport Extreme Slow Ping (Internet) Response

I am having problems with my dual-band airport extreme.  When connecting to the external internet, I'm seeing high ping responses (>500ms) after about 5-10 minutes of resetting (hard reset) the Extreme and initially seeing 15-30ms response times.
    I've tried:
    1.  Moving the router physcially in the house (no improvement)
    2.  Trying different channels on both 2.5 and 5 (some, but inconsistent improvement)
    3.  Multiple hard resets and reconfiguring the Extreme
    4.  Reinstall the firmware (haven't tried going down in firmware)
    5.  There are no cordless phones in the house
    6.  Absolute speed to the internet is strong (above my provider's stated speed)
    7.  If I connect my Macbook pro directly to the cable router, everything (ping + speed) is great.
    8.  Seeing slow ping responses both on my MacBook Pro and a separate PC
Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot?  Seems like it a problem with the wireless connection and/or interference.
    thanks!
    Dale

had a 5th gen Extreme that I bought with 7.5 and immediately upgraded to 7.6.  Saw the exact issue you described.  exchanged it for a 6th gen Extreme, and am experiencing the same behavior again... both with 7.5.2 and 7.6 firmware.
everything is hunky dory when plugged directly into my cable modem.
    third time's a charm, hopefully.

  • Airport Extreme slowing down internet connection to a crawl

    Hi,
    Can anyone explain this one?
Just this afternoon my internet connection slowed to a crawl. Pages would stall loading and I couldn't even collect emails. There was a connection there. A Google search might take a minute or so but anything else would barely flinch.
So I did a few restarts and complete power downs of all my peripherals, computers and network devices but no joy. I called my broadband provider who did a remote test of my cable modem and confirmed it was responding well.
So I removed the Airport Extreme from the network and connected directly to the modem. All was fine, in fact that is how I am working now. But when connecting the Airport Extreme back in I have this extremely slow connection. I have looked at both the Network preferences and Airport Setup Utility. Both claim the connection is good.
I also have an old G4 in another room. It was switched off during all the goings on this afternoon but I powered it up to see if the same problem persisted. Sure enough it does, as it is also connected via the AE. However, the local connection between computers is just fine.
So how do I resolve this? Why would the AE cause such an internet slowdown?
    Thanks,
    Colin

I've had similar symptoms on my network. Here are network details:
    Comcast is the ISP
I have an Extreme and an Express set up as a single wireless network.
Extreme is plugged in to the cable modem. Express is an extension of the Extreme.
Devices that are regularly "on network": Mac Mini (G4), MacBook, Mac Pro, 2 TiVO Series 2.
    All Macs are running 10.4.10.
Symptom: Over the course of 3-6 weeks, wireless access slows to a crawl for the Intel-based MacBook and MacPro, but not the PowerPC Mini. All web sites, email traffic, etc., for the Intel Macs becomes painful: CNN's home page loads in minutes, not seconds, for example. Unplugging and replugging the Express doesn't do anything. Powering off and on the Extreme resolves the issue. For now. There are no pending firmware updates for the Express or Extreme that I'm aware of.

  • 17" MacBook Pro; Slow/Intrmnt Internet

Hey guys. I've done some searching on the internet and so far all I've come up with are discussions relating to this topic when upgrading from a previous apple OS to the current OS but not when it's happening on a brand new computer pre-installed with Lion. I just bought a 17" Macbook Pro i7 Processor and have had no problems besides the internet connection on wifi (haven't really done a lot of troubleshooting on the ethernet direct connection because well, I don't want to sit by my router or have a cord going from-to my computer).
Whether it be safari or google chrome, it's slow! But when it works it's fast. My internet connection per speedtest.net rangest somewhere between 15-20MBPS on the downstream. This is the only computer that has a problem. I've tried two differnet routers. A Linksys (B/G) and a Cisco(B/G/N), what happens on both is pages will take forever to change, load, but in some instances I'll have no problems at all.
Any ideas/suggestions/fixes in the near future? Thanks!

Not sure if I solved my own problem but ..
System Preferences > Network > Click on "Wifi" > Advanced > DNS > Adding custom "DNS Server" 8.8.8.8 (Google) has (so far) improved the performance of my internet drastically. Websites that used to load slow or result in a "page/server not found" error messages have not shown up.

  • LAN file transfer speed much slower than Internet file transfer speed

We have several Macs & windows machines on a Ethernet LAN with an X server. We also have an airport express and a repeater. The LAN will download an 85MB file in about 4 seconds but over the wireless network it takes 31 Minutes for the same file. What's the problem?
A wireless internet speed test yealds 1504 down and 1213 up and is about the same with the LAN connection.
Both the windows laptops and the imacs seem to have this problem. Any ideas?

Do you have any older wireless equipment that may be connecting at 802.11B, which would slow down your wireless network? For best results if you don't have have any 802.11B clients, switch your broadcast mode to 802.11 G only.
    Just a thought.

  • Adobe CS6 installation is very slow if internet access is blocked

    Hi,
I noticed that our Adobe CS6 installations (using an AAMEE package) were surprisingly slow (as in five hours on a fast machine).  I've worked out the cause of the problem, and am posting it here in the hope that it will help someone else experiencing the same issue - also, if anyone from Adobe is reading this, it would be nice to get it fixed, at least for future releases. :-)
The problem is that our machines don't have direct access to web sites on the internet, i.e., port 80 traffic is blocked by the external firewall.  I discovered that the CS6 installer was repeatedly attempting to contact various web sites, including crl.verisign.net, presumably in order to validate digital certificates on files in the install package.  Each such attempt had to time out before the next was made.  Configuring Windows Firewall to block these attempts reduced the install time from five hours to thirty minutes.
On Windows 7, this command can be used to install a firewall rule that will block outgoing port 80 traffic:
    netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="block www" dir=out action=block protocol=tcp remoteport=80
Once installation is finished, this command will remove the rule:
netsh advfirewall firewall delete rule name="block www"

For later versions (Adobe CC and onwards) you need to block port 443 as well as port 80.

  • MacBook Pro is slow on internet

I have three PCs and one MacBook Pro.
All are wireless, and I have a wireless DLink router.
I have all systems networked so I can share files and printer, and internet.
Of all my computers, the MacBook Pro is the slowest on the internet. It takes forever to download videos from the web, or even surfing is slow.
My other PCs, all wirelesslesly networked, are much faster
    on the internet.
Anybody can guess why the MacBook Pro is slowest?

Wireless networking is still a bit of a black art, unfortunately. I've got a MacBook Pro, a Sony Vaio TX650P and a G4 Powerbook. I have a wireless home network using a Linksys router.
Each machine has its own issues with networking. The MacBook Pro is the fastest of the three, but occasionally bogs down for no reason. The Powerbook loses connectivity frequently, even though it finds the base-station again immediately when I manually reconnect. The Vaio will work for weeks without problems, then refuse to connect for days at a time, no matter what I do, only to pick up the network and work again as if nothing had happened.
I used the MPB and the Vaio in various hotels over the past nine months, and my experience was certainly varied. Some places, both worked fine. In others, one or the other machine wouldn't connect at all, while the other one had no problems. In yet others, both would connect, but download speeds would vary widely, with no obvious cause.
On my home network, the Pro is quickest, the Vaio second and the Powerbook slowest. There's no real reason for this, as far as I can see, since each machine's WiFi speed is higher than the 4mbps cable Internet connection I use. The bottleneck should be the Net connection, therefore, not the WiFi.
I'm sorry I can't offer more concrete suggestions for a fix, but I hope my experience gives you some idea about how flaky the whole WiFi thing still is.
