Slow backup process:10mb for 50mins

Dears,
I have a early 2008 macbook pro 15" with snow leopard, and a 500G time-capsule(1st edition,firmware 7.4.1).
They worked fine in the past 3 years.
However I found my backup process became very slow about 2 months ago, I checked the log below and it shown that it took 50mins to backup just 10mb data.

I think it's just because there are some small files make time machine to process, but I have no idea where can I find these files (or logs).
any ideas?

See what the log shows -- if TM was doing a "deep traversal," it's probably normal.

TM is not doing deeptraversal.
I'd say, first, double-check the things you did that seem to have caused the problem.
If it all seems fine, try Verifying your internal HD and Repairing your backups, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, to be sure it isn't some sort of directory problem.
If still no help, a few folks have had a somewhat similar problem (very slow backups with huge file counts) with 10.6.8;  many managed to solve it by reinstalling OSX, but only going back to 10.6.7 via that "combo."  Just why is a mystery, unfortunately.
You are right, I should double-check the problem.
I will try your suggestion, and thank for your reply

Go into preferences and under playback turn off background render. That helped speed things for me when working with large files.

  • SSAS Tabular slow (full) processing when server is up for more than a day

Setup: SQL 2014 CU3. Machine with 2 physical CPUs and 384GB of RAM. Windows 2012R2.
96GB allocated to SQL Server, rest allocated to Vertipaq/Tabular.
Problem: after a restart of Analysis Services (Tabular), processing time for full processing is fine. Processing of the main table runs with 145000 rows/sec for one cube, and 60000 rows/sec for the other.
After a day of uptime, full processing is slower by a factor of 2-3. For the second cube, performance stays at a low ~ 18000 rows/sec for subsequent full processing.
Performance counter says "memory Limit Vertipaq KB" ~ 280GB, "while memory usage KB" ~ 63GB. There should be plenty of free memory.
SQL Queries for the tabular data are fine and extremely simple and high performance.
I can reproduce the effect at will.
    Is this a known bug?

Please try to clear the cache and check if this issue is persists or not.

  • Extremely slow backup for System 4.2 update

It's been some time since I've synched my iPad, so I am updating from 3.2.2 to 4.2. When starting the update via iTunes, it seems that the backup process is taking an excessively long time, i.e. greater than 2 hours and not done yet. (I started over and removed most of the videos from the iPad itself and, even so, the process doesn't seem to be speeding up).
Is this normal behavior? If not, suggestions? I'm just going to let it run all night to see if it completes the system update.

    Hi,
Make sure you are using the USB cable that came with the iPad and try a different USB port.
A backup shouldn't take more than 5 to 10 minutes.
If you can access your apps from the iTunes window with your iPad connected, deselect all the boxes under the Apps tab then click the Sync bottom right side of the iTunes window.
Now restart your iPad. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears.
Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
Restart your Mac. Try updating your iPad now.
If all your apps were running ok in 3.2.2, then one or more may not be compatible with the update.
"iMac Mac OS X (10.6.4)" <-- from your profile on a previous thread.
And, if you are running v10.6.4 on your iMac, there are software updates available from your Apple () menu / Software Update ...

  • Windows XP - Howto Disable the broken backup process

I finally found a source on how to disable the backup process during the iPhone sync. Here's the link. Tried it myself and works great. I plan on removing this XML edit once Apple distributes a proper fix:
    http://www.eidac.de/?p=60
    From the article:"
Disabling the slow iTunes Backup on Windows is a little more tricky, but it works. First of all close ITunes and then follow these steps:
    1. Locate your iTunesPrefs.xml file. It’s usually located in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes or C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes.
Hint: If the folder Application Data does not show up, make sure that hidden files are visible in the Windows Explorer
    2. Backup your iTunesPrefs.xml file
    3. Open iTunesPrefs.xml using a capable text-editor (e.g. Notepad++, Ultraedit, but not MS Notepad)
    4. Search for a section called User Preferences and paste the following snipped into the User Preferences Section after the first <dict>:
    <key>DeviceBackupsDisabled</key>
    <data>
    dHJ1ZQ==
    </data>
After you’ve done that it should exactly look like the screenshot on the left.
    5. Save the file and restart iTunes. Backups should now be disabled. To enable backups again delete the XML Snippet from iTunesPrefs.xml file."

    Hi Nick,
There isn't an easy way to do it via Mac OS X or System Preferences. But I did find this article that looks like it has some pretty good resources.

  • Itunes locked backup without asking for a password

    Hi,
I have installed iTunes 11.4 on a new laptop (windows 7), I connected my iPhone 5 and downloaded iOS8. Before updating the firmware I made a backup of my iPhone and then restored it. After that i tried to restore the previous backup but iTunes asked me for a password (which i hadn't set as long as the related flag was not picked during the backup process), i tried all the password i have (IDApple and so on) but were all incorrect so I am not able to restore all my data!
How could that happen? Is there a default password used by iTunes? I also tried to use softwares to find the password but were not useful.
    I need help please.
    Thanks in advance

This is the iTunes bug that haven't been fixed by Apple so far. Several trials are as follows:
    1. Deleting the apple.com cookies in Safari. The safari settings are linked to the iTunes store brower, enabling the cookies again fixed everything and you can login no problem.
    2. Disconnect your iPhone with computer and sign out of iTunes then sign in gain.
    3. Wait a moment and try again because sometimes this is poor show resulted from busy server.
    4. Use 3rd party tool to unlock iPhone backup password. Recommended here: iPhone Backup Unlocker. This is the only tool to recover password for iTunes as I know.
    Hope they helps somehow.

  • TIme Machine  backup grows too large during backup process

I have been using Time Machine without a problem for several months, backing up my imac - 500GB drive with 350g used. Recently TM failed because the backups had finally filled the external drive - 500GB USB. Since I did not need the older backups, I reformatted the external drive to start from scratch. Now TM tries to do an initial full backup but the size keeps growing as it is backing up, eventually becoming too large for the external drive and TM fails. It will report, say, 200G to back up, then it reaches that point and the "Backing up XXXGB of XXXGB" just keeps getting larger. I have tried excluding more than 100GB of files to get the backup set very small, but it still grows during the backup process. I have deleted plist and cache files as some discussions have suggested, but the same issue occurs each time. What is going on???

    Michael Birtel wrote:
Here is the log for the last failure. As you see it indicates there is enough room 345g needed, 464G available, but then it fails. No. It's sort of a warning, indicating that TM isn't sure what's changed on your internal HD since the previous backup, usually as a result of an abnormal shutdown. But since you just erased your TM disk, it's perfectly normal.
    Starting standard backup
Backing up to: /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb
Ownership is disabled on the backup destination volume. Enabling.

Backup content size: 309.5 GB excluded items size: 22.3 GB for volume Macintosh HD
No pre-backup thinning needed: 345.01 GB requested (including padding), 464.53 GB available
This is a completely normal start to a backup. Just after that last message is when the actual copying begins. Apparently whatever's happening, no messages are being sent to the log, so this may not be an easy one to figure out.
First, let's use Disk Utility to confirm that the disk really is set up properly.
First, select the second line for your internal HD (usually named "Macintosh HD"). Towards the bottom, the Format should be +Mac OS Extended (Journaled),+ although it might be +Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled).+
Next, select the line for your TM partition (indented, with the name). Towards the bottom, the Format must be the same as your internal HD (above). If it isn't, you must erase the partition (not necessarily the whole drive) and reformat it with Disk Utility.
Sometimes when TM formats a drive for you automatically, it sets it to +Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled).+ Do not use this unless your internal HD is also case-sensitive. All drives being backed-up, and your TM volume, should be the same. TM may do backups this way, but you could be in for major problems trying to restore to a mis-matched drive.
Last, select the top line of the TM drive (with the make and size). Towards the bottom, the *Partition Map Scheme* should be GUID (preferred) or +Apple Partition Map+ for an Intel Mac. It must be +Apple Partition Map+ for a PPC Mac.
If any of this is incorrect, that's likely the source of the problem. See item #5 of the Frequently Asked Questions post at the top of this forum for instructions, then try again.
If it's all correct, perhaps there's something else in your logs.
Use the Console app (in your Applications/Utilities folder).
When it starts, click +Show Log List+ in the toolbar, then navigate in the sidebar that opens up to your system.log and select it. Navigate to the +Starting standard backup+ message that you noted above, then see what follows that might indicate some sort of error, failure, termination, exit, etc. (many of the messages there are info for developers, etc.). If in doubt post (a reasonable amount of) the log here.

You have to follow the process outlined here to recover contacts from an iCloud backup: Recovering deleted iCloud contacts from an iCloud backup..  Otherwise, as you have noticed, the recovered contacts are overwritten when your device reconnects to iCloud.

I'm pretty sure something is wrong with the hard drive installed on the iMac at this point. I tried to do a clean install of 10.5.0 from the Leopard retail DVD and that stalled early in the process as well.
Yes, it sure sounds like it. It now sounds like both the TM restore and Erase and Install are unable to erase your internal HD. It's not even getting to your TM backups, or installing OSX.
Let's double-check and try again. Boot from the Install disc again, and completely reformat the internal HD. Be sure to use the GUID Partition Map scheme if it's an Intel Mac, or the +Apple Partition Map+ scheme if it's a PPC. And use the +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ format.
It might be worth taking the time to then do a +Zero Out.+ Select Erase, then +Security Options,+ then +Zero Out Disk+ (the one-pass option is sufficient). That will, obviously, write zeros to the entire disk. If this fails, the disk is dying and likely the cause of the whole mess. If it passes, it isn't necessarily ok, but it's a pretty good sign, and you may be able to proceed with the restore.

I found my old laptop was very slow when processing the hundreds of images I usually take on a weekly basis.  I bought a new faster laptop but when I looked for the cd with the software and serial I could not find it in the Xmas clutter.  I downloaded a trial version of lightroom and got it working on my new laptop. Is there a way to access the serial number from my previously installed version and insert it into the trail version to make it work for me?

    Mea culpa
While i registered all my cs2 thru 6 versions and my lightroom 2 thru 4 versions and recorded the serials and saved the adobe registration emails.  Since this came as a freebee with the camera i neglected this vital step.  I have the instslled version on my old laptop but want to install it on my new one.  Thanks to Jim Hess I got the serial so all is well in my world and I will register it with ADOBE

  • How to stop running Backup process by BRTOOLS ?

    Dear All,
We r using HP-UX -- OS for SAP system. We run backup process by DB13 TC.
once the backup started, we can not log in  till backup process ends.
If we want to stop this process in between then how to stop BACKUP process safely ? We have to use BRTOOLS ?
    Pl' give right method ..............

    Hi,
Just confirm whether you are doing a disk to disk backup or disk to tape backup.
Disk to Disk - It copies the files from oraarch filesystem to logbackup, and sapdata1,2,3... to sapbackup filesystems respectively. This is scheduled through brtools (DB13). This affects the performance tremdrously.
Disk to Tape - This takes all the files from sapbackup and logbackup filesystems to tape. this doesnot affect the performance.
We can kill the backup scheduled by brtools, because there is always a background job is triggered for the backup, the jobs always start with DBA*. Then kill that job, with help of pid from SAP level or OS level. but I doubt that the stopped backup can be used for recovery for future use.

  • ML fall asleep during TM backup process

    Hi,
    is this normal?
Right in the middle of the first backup process using TM my fresh installation of ML put my MBA to sleep while it was pluggid to the wall. I was using a USB HDD to backup. And as I mentioned, it was the initial backup, the first one. When I put my Mac back on it continued where it left off, all seemed fine.
Shouldn't there be something that prevends my Mac from going to sleep while doing a backup? This was the way in Lion, right? So is this a new thing to ML?
More important: Should I be worried about my backup? All works fine, as far as I can tell. Should I do a new one?

I belive it is not supported.
I have had my QNAP NAS working since christmas 2007 until now. With no problems as far as I saw it.
But yesterday it suddently changed. I had a backup running, that I stopped by closing the laptop. (I often do this).
And this morning I woke up and realized that TM could not see the NAS device any longer.
I fixed the device and tried again.
I then tried to re-select the NAS configuration. It was selected, but not stored in the TM profile. TM told me it was unconfigured.
** BIG PROBLEMS ** I could not read the data now, because TM will not accept my NAS any longer.
Therefore I have completely lost trust in the TM product. It seems not to be ready for operations yet.
I then changed to the umbrella backup. Backup 3.1.2. And yes it runs perfect.
I can schedule backups very much like TM
    I can see the savesets
I can see the logs from incremental backups.
I feel trunst in the umbrella-software.
In the umbrella the selection of files, time schedule works, it is realistic. Great.
I understand the save-sets from the umbrella, A great viewer application exists.
My conclusion is that TM is not ready for production yet. It is an early access demo ware. The TM vision and graphics are very nice. But I cannot trust it --- therefore it is too smart for me.
I stop using TM for now.
I am very happy about my decision, because I was starting to loose trust in the entire MacBook Pro and the Leopard.... the bricks was falling apart. But going back to the umbrella is rock-solid.
I think that within the next 24 month the TM might become less buggy, and become trust wordy. But now NO.
