Slow boot after blue screen and system restore

I did the updates (Security 2008-002, Safari 3.1 and others) in Software Updates and then could not get past the blue screen. Tried all the advice on these boards but none worked. So I used Time Machine to restore the system. It worked except that now the booting process pauses (on a blue screen) for about 5 minutes. Then the process completes and everything appears to be fine.
However, this delayed booting does not seem right and never happened before.
Anything I can do?

What kind of incompatibility issues?
How far does the xp installation get?
What do you mean by 'uninstalling the vista bootloader'?
It seems very unusual that you can't boot from the CD anymore. Maybe double check the boot priority again, or have CD as the only boot option?
I can make XP BSOD and Reboot on my V200 by setting the SATA mode to AHCI. *no floppy = no F6 driver installation
I can't recall how VISTA reacted to setting SATA to AHCI.
Let me know how it turns out.

  • Dynadock U3.0 - after use - "Blue Screen" and System Restore required

    Hello,
Everytime after I used my new Dynadock U3.0 and I shut down the computer, a system restore is required when I use the computer again.
I use a Samsung 900X4B. Could it be the Notebook or is something wrong with the Dynadock?
What could be the problem? (I use the latest drivers)
    Thank you for helping.

    Thank you.
I tried to disconnect the Dynadock using the icon on the right side.
I installed the newest driver, including the displaylink softwarev 6.3.
I also dissabled the virus scanner.
However, evertime I restart the notebook the system needs to be repaired or restored.
I did not matter, if I left the USB-link attached or detached it after using the icon on the right side to shut down the dynadock.
    I tried all possible modulations.
Another dockingstation (USB2.0) is working fine. I also can remove or attach during work without problems.
    May be I miss something.
    Thank you.

  • Mac Mini Intel boots to blue screen and gets stuck

Mac Mini running 10.6 Intel won't boot up. I get the chime, then the apple logo, then a blue screen, then nothing but the small rotating circle, which appears and disappears about every 5 seconds (not the color wheel, but the one that just looks like hands on a clock turning.)
Per apple online help, tried starting up in Safe mode. Same result. No boot. Just blue.
Per apple help, I started up in Sinlge User mode and ran Fsck from command line (I don't have the install disk). First run of Fsck said FILE SYSTEM WAS MODFIFED. Ran it again, per apple help. Second time, said volume appeared to be OK. Typed "reboot". Same result. No boot, just blue screen and rotating circle.
Not sure what else to try. Any help?
    Thanks

Sometimes PRAM seems to retain info from a previous startup disk error condition. There is a small chance that resetting the PRAM might help.
You can get a replacement for your original OS X install DVD and any bundled apps from AppleCare (1-800-275-2273) for a shipping and handling fee. You will need to provide your Mac's serial number so they can send the correct DVD(s) for your specific model.

  • Boots to blue screen and won't load os10

when i turn on my computer, it boots only to a blue screen and no farther.
there is the "whirly gig" things that goes around on the blue screen, but it wont load the OS ..........any helps is appreciated!

I'm in pretty much the same boat...
I left a classroom eMac running a bunch of updates. When I came back and hit the restart button, it goes through the grey screen with the apple and then stops at the blue screen. Sometimes with a cursor in the upper left corner, sometimes with the little spinning gear, sometimes both, sometimes neither.
When I boot verbose mode, it launches loginwindow, then does 2 lines of network startup, then stops. Which makes sense -- because the blue screen is supposed to be showing loginwindow.
    I have already:
-- run fsck when booted into single-user mode. It's clean now, but the first time I did it there were errors that were fixed.
-- run disk utility and repaired permissions. Again, the first time there was repair work to be done, and now it's clean.
    -- zapped the pram.
-- tried to boot in safe mode (by hitting the shift key right after the startup tones and holding it down until the blue screen comes up -- which comes up without the loginwindow in safe mode.)
Is there anything else to try before a reinstall?
This is a lab computer, so I'm not sure whether to do an archive/install, or to do a clean install, run migration assistant from another machine, and then fix the machine name. The one time I tried archive/install I ended up with a machine which it's impossible to install print drivers on. (I keep installing the driver over and over, but it never appears on the list of printers in the add printers panel.)
    thanks for any help!

  • Unable to boot after Time Machine full system restore!!

I was having some serious slowdowns with my computer. I did multiple RAM and HD hardware tests, everything seemed to be working fine. I had recently deleted a bunch of files in order to free up some HD space, so I thought that may be the culprit. So I did a Time Machine backup and restored the Powerbook to it's original 10.3 software. All was fine. Then I upgraded back to 10.5 and all was fine. Then I did a Time Machine full system restore overnight and got the message "Your restore was successful, you must now restart your computer" (or something to that effect). Now I get the start-up chime and startup screen (apple logo) but then the computer shuts itself down. I have reset the PMU and PRAM to no effect. I have tried booting up in safe made, also no dice. I have tried starting it up with the time machine HD attached - doesn't help. I guess I'll need to hit the genius bar but wanted to ask the friendly discussion forum folks first. thanks in advance.

    Hi coldengray
Did you try to start from your System-CD? Hold down C-key during startup, start DiskUtility from the menu and verify/repair disk and permissions there.
If the CD is not available you can also connect your TimeMachine-Disk, select it as startup volume in System Preferences/StartupDisk, restart and then run DiskUtility from folder Applications/Utilities
    Good luck P

  • Slow Booting Leopard (Blue Screen)

I was trying to tweak my boot time of leopard. It shows a blue screen for a long time before showing desktop. I checked log and found a few problems and deleted and unloaded various services (I removed machinit_peruser.d and mach_init.d folders and inloaded com.apple.dnbobserver.plist. Finally I think I got the problem in the log but I am not sure of the solution to tweak it.
this is the log which seems culprit to me.
    +08/05/08 4:31:41 PM com.apple.launchctl.System[2] com.openssh.sshd: Already loaded+
+08/05/08 4:31:52 PM org.ntp.ntpd[25] Error : nodename nor servname provided, or not known+
    +08/05/08 4:32:14 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.UserEventAgent-LoginWindow[78]) Exited:Terminated+
So majority of blue screen time (almost 23 seconds) is spend here. Any idea what is is this UserEventAgent thing or org.ntp.ntpd stuff and any suggestions to shut them off.
I am sure many users have the same problem. If someone could find out why is this happening, I am sure it is resolved issue.

    More Updates:
I figured out org.ntp.ntpd is related to time server thing. So disabling auto time updates, i narrowed down to the following log
    +08/05/08 4:59:31 PM com.apple.launchctl.System[2] com.openssh.sshd: Already loaded+
    +08/05/08 5:00:10 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.UserEventAgent-LoginWindow[78]) Exited: Terminated+
    +08/05/08 5:00:13 PM Dock[95] _DESCRegisterDockExtraClient failed 268435459+
+08/05/08 5:00:15 PM [0x0-0xf00f].com.apple.iTunesHelper[107] USBMuxListenerCreate: No such file or directory+
So I guess I am pretty sure, blue screen has something to do with com.apple.UserEventAgent-LoginWindow. Can anyone tell me what it is and can we safely unload it from launch agents and how?

  • Macbook on Snow Leopard Sleep freeze, slow boot time, blue screen, ... etc.

The macbook has the following problems:
    1. When closing the lid or pressing the power button the computer freezes, the fans start spinning fast it stays like that until it drains the battery. This happens every time.
    2. Start-up times are very long, like 3 or 4 minutes. This also happens every time.
    3. Now after a fresh snow leopard install it doesn't even start up completely, as it stays with the blue background and I can hear the music of the introductory animation.
The macbook worked ok with the factory installed Tiger. The SL DVD is OK, as its installation has been tested on another Mac. The machine's advanced hardware test passed successfully. Resetting Pram and similar actions were unsuccessful as solving the problem.
I don't know what else to do... please help.

So mine started doing some of the same things. It freezes when it goes into sleep mode. Then it starts to get really really hot and the drive starts spinning fast. It also takes a very long time to boot up. And it's unresponsive sometimes. I've wiped the drive and reinstalled a few times, but it's still like that. I don't know what's wrong.

  • G5 won't boot after blue screen

My PowerMac G5 won't boot: it passes the grey screen with the apple logo then gets stuck in the blue screen. this is happening since I tried to connect a second display: that time the computer froze.
I have tried safe booting and then it works fine. I've reinstalled 10.4 but it doesn't make a difference.
Does this sound familiar to anybody? Could it be a video card/motherboard/HD problem?
    All tips are very welcome.

  • I have an ibook g4 that boots to blue screen and hangs. Safe mode will boot but hangs after log in. I have reset PRAM, NVRAM, and the PMU. Booted from Diskwarrior and rebuilt and tested the HD, working properly.  Boot from Tiger dvd shows images? no text

The tiger install dvd boots only to show an image of what looks to be two steps, not sure what its showing me.. possibly inserting RAM?  Anyone have any ideas?  Thanks in advance.

Could you get a picture of the screen, load that into your working computer,
and post it into a reply here? There are a few kinds of situations where a
similiar display of that sort may appear.
Given the G4 iBook PPC (which model) is a bit dated now, one has to
assume you have the original 'install-restore' DVD it came with, new.
What was or wasn't it doing, before you chose to try to boot Tiger DVD?
Do you have a second Mac, one w/ FireWire ports; maybe Thunderbolt?
It may be possible to further look into the ailing iBook G4 via FireWire
from a second Mac, and attempt to investigate, or save old data to some
external drive, USB Flash; in case you need to totally wipe the HDD.
An image of the iBook screen may be helpful. Someone else with recent
troubleshooting or extensive use of iBook portables (or other OS X issue)
that presents such a screen instead of a normal progress screen, may
have an immediate idea. Without an image, I am not venturing a guess.
What key did you hold down while trying to boot the computer from DVD?
One set of keys can get you a Startup Manager. Among other options.

If you try all these Steps and you still have issues... Then a Visit to an Apple Store or AASP (Authorized Apple Service Provider) is the Next Step... Be sure to make an appointment first...

  • Computer goes blue screen and comes back slow

I have a 27 inch 2010 imac and evertime i log in my screen goes blue and my mouse has a hard time moving.  Then after a will the screen goes blue again and my computer fine.  Then a will after my computer goes blue screen and it slow again.  And it keeps doing this like 10 times then it just stopes.  I have no clue whats wrong with it??

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free Disk space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

  • MacBook Pro hanging with blue screen and spinner after installing Software Update

Hi I was wondering if someone could help me with this current issue. Just a few hours ago I finished reinstalling Mac OS X Snow Leopard in my MacBook Pro. I performed a clean installation as part of a yearly spring cleaning that I do on all my systems to keep them optimized. So there was I downloading some software updates which included the combo update of OSX 10.6.8 and others. The updates finished downloading and the system logged out to install the updates, when the updates finished installing my MacBook proceeded by logging out into a blue screen and show a gray spinner similar to the one seen when you start your Mac. Here's the problem after 2 hours the system is showing the spinner and the blue screen, I think that my computer has just hanged in the reboot process.
I was wondering what should I do? Do a force restart? Or leave it overnight?
Also, where can I find any information on what error is causing this issue?
I appreciate your responses and help.
By the way, I installed Mac OS X from a USB stick that has the original image of the disk installer that came bundled with my computer.

    Kappy wrote:
Force a shutdown. Do not restart yet, but first do the following:
    Repair the Hard Drive
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Next, boot into Safe Mode then restart normally.
    Hi Kappy,
Checked the hard drive after forcing a shutdown and booting from my Snow Leopard Installer USB Key and the status of the HDD says "Verified". I ran the repair and the volume was repaired successfully. Clicked on "Verify Disk" and it says "Macintosh HD appears to be OK". So I ran a second repair and again no errors were reported.
As suggested I booted back again in Safe Mode and restarted normally. All software appears to have been installed successfully. But I don't understand why my computer hanged and showed the spinner after installing the updates in the blue screen that appears just before rebooting. I am aware that the system shows that spinner after a OS update but the longest it lasts is 30 seconds at the most in my previous cases.

    Hello jared1915
If you are stuck in that loop, the next step would be to restore your iPhone. Check out the article below to get your iPhone into recovery-mode and restore it in iTunes.
