  • OS 10.8 just installed. "Hot Corner" to put new iMac 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5  to sleep mode doesn't work. Have tried cordless and corded mouse with same result. Momentary sleep, immediate wake. Any idea how to fix?

Set "hot corner" to put iMac to sleep.  Doesn't work.  Selecting the corner will momentarily put to sleep, but immediately rewakes.  Have tried all four corners with same result.  Have tried with wireless mouse and with corded mouse with same result.  Any ideas as to how to fix?

You've been so great, I want to thank you for all the help over a very frustrating day.  Last evening, I redownloaded and installed the fresh copy of Mountain Lion.  The problem remained.  After installing the new OS 10.8, any clicks on a web page (Firefox browser) didn't open the page, but instead made a copy of the page on the desktop. Felt it must be hardware  degrading, so I set up a case with Apple support for today.  Early in the diagnostics, I had swapped out for a corded mouse and the problem remained.   As a last try, I changed out my wireless mouse for a different wireless mouse. That seems to have done the trick. My Logitech mouse is incompatible with OS 10.8.
    Thank you again, so much!

  • Leopard general issues (slow boot-Blue screen of tolerance)?

I upgraded it to leopard 10.5.2 a week ago. I thought my old system with tiger (10.4.11) used to boot faster and work faster and I thought I was being cynical. I just checked with my buddy's computer which is completely identical to mine (2GHz intel Core 2 Duo, 2gb ram, 120gb hard disk macbook). She still has tiger 10.4.10. It boots drastically faster. As soon as dark grey apple disappears tiger shows a progress bar showing the log on process and it logs on in less than 5 secs. Overall boot up was around 20secs. First of all I don't know why leopard doesn't have that progress bar. Secondly leopard hangs on a blue screen during startup for another 20 seconds which makes the overall time 40-50 secs.
I deleted all cache everything and unused files while installing. I never got a blue screen of death either. It is almost a clean install. People might suggest erase/install or archive/install but I checked other forums people suffering with this issue has not been successful to eradicate it this way.
I checked my logs. they are pretty clean except some launchctl convert stuff.
I am pretty convinced it is leopard issue.
    I have two questions:
    1) Is Apple aware of this issue (blue screen on startup for 20 sec) and would be address it in next update? or is it not fixable?
    2) Can I somehow have that auto-logon progress bar back?
    3) Sidebar fonts are very small. Tiger sidebar was much easier to use. Is their a way to increase font size.
In general I am quite disappointed with Leopard. It is much slower especially with respect to finder windows. I wish I could downgrade to Tiger but it is to much hassle..taking backup..reinstalling all applications. I kinda like quicklook too. I'll miss it if I downgrade.
I would like to know whether apple addresses such issues in upgrades? I am patient.

    I have two questions:
    Actually I count three questions.
    1) Is Apple aware of this issue (blue screen on startup for 20 sec) and would be address it in next update? or is it not fixable?
Not a problem with OS X. More likely a problem with your installation or setup. I have 5 Macs running Leopard and have no similar problem nor ever have. Although boot times differ with hardware, startupitems, login items, etc. they are not much different. My Mac Pro takes half the time as my laptops typically.
    2) Can I somehow have that auto-logon progress bar back?
No. It's no longer included in OS X.
    3) Sidebar fonts are very small. Tiger sidebar was much easier to use. Is their a way to increase font size.
Not aware of any control over this in Leopard, but if there is someone else may let you know.
If you want to improve performance on your computer then try some maintenance:
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.0 is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.6.1 is Leopard compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. The current version, 1.5.1, is Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.
OS X automatically defrags files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that presently AppleJack is not compatible with Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
    6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
    7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
    8. Data Backup (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
    1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
    2. Toast
    3. Impression
    4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.

  • Slow boot, blue screen, red face

I will make this as short as possible. Today when I turned on my old G5 Power Mac, I thought it was broken. I got the blue screen, and then nothing. I was in the process of hooking it up to my laptop for the Target Disk Mode when I noticed that it had now fully booted.
Here is what I did yesterday:
First, I updated my system, with everything Apple said. I do not remember what all of them were, but there were three updates, and it took a couple hours. After that, when I had a restart message, it was very slow, and I eventually manuaaly turned off the computer and restarted. I also then dowloaded a program from version tracker called "encrypt this", or something like that. When I tried to encrypt a folder, twice, the computer "timed out."
Now it takes a long time to boot (several minutes), but once it is going, I notice no problem with performance. It is not slow at all. Also, I put the dowloaded program in the trash bin, and emptied it, but it is stil very slow to boot. Any thoughts on the problem or solution would be appreciated.

I reinstalled Leopard this evening, and then reloaded everything from Time Machine. Considering the long time the computer took to reboot, I doubt the problem has been solved. Still, I have a new problem from the install. It is now asking for a password, and will not let me in. I have never been asked for a password before, even when I installed Leopard the first time in September. I used the password that I use for Apple (I have two, and I used them both), but each time the little window jiggles and goes back to the password screen. I have no idea what that password might be, and no idea how to learn it since I cannot get the computer up. How can I do this?

  • ONLY screen blending mode doesn't work...?

I have Windows 8, and Photoshop CS6. All of my blending modes work, except for Screen. I don't know why it doesn't, but I do use it somewhat frequently, and it's really holding me back at this point.
Is this related to all the other problems people have been having with Photoshop running on Windows 8? Or is this an issue that I'm going to have to fix myself, somehow?
    Thanks!

Do you see the problem if you disable the [  ] Use Graphics Processor setting entirely (remembering to restart Photoshop before testing)?
What video card (aka graphics adapter) do you have in your system?
What driver version are you running?
Have you looked for alternative versions e.g., on nVidia.com or AMD.com?

  • Sleeping mode doesn't work

When I will wake up the computer by pressing a button of the keyboard the computer turns off and after that it will not start up with the on/off button at the back of the computer (brand new mini mac late 2012 with Mountain Lion). What's wrong?

Yes, I have this problem also.
It has been a problem since I bought it in November. It also has a tendency to shut itself off when it is asleep (before I try and wake it up) and the power button is also not responsive at those times.
"Resetting the SMC" from the support article essentially means unplugging it, waiting a few seconds, plugging it back in and then waiting a few seconds before turning it on which you are probably already doing to get it back on.
I can't offer you much advice. I took it to support at the apple store and they changed the logic board but it did not solve the problem. I have also reinstalled the operating system to no avail. Apple seemed to think that it wasn't a problem with the power supply because it is only shutting down when it is asleep. But I don't really know what to think of that because they were wrong about the logic board. Part of the difficulty I have had is that it is intermittent and it invariably doesn't happen when I take it in.
To be honest this has just been one of many problems I have encountered with this machine. I still have the video blinking out issue which appears on this forum as well as the usb3 wireless interference / shielding issue (solved only by not using usb3 to connect my external drive).
I have therefore learned to live with it as it is only intermittent. It is annoying though as it means that reliable connecting remotely to it when I am away will not be possible.
If you have any luck diagnosing your problems please post back here because you are the only person I have seen with this issue.
    Good luck.

  • HT3529 Message Notifications show up in lock mode when screen is on, but not showing on black screen (sleep mode).

My texts show up on my lock screen, but not on my black screen (sleep mode).  They used to, but not anymore.  I have "show messages in lock screen" turned on, but I don't see any options for sleep mode.  I have banners turned on.  All settings seem to be correct, but in order to see my messages I need to turn on my screen, which is frustrating b/c then I don't see messages when they are first sent.  Any advice?  Thanks.

Thanks for the response, but I've tried that and it doesn't work.  I have friends and family who have their settings exactly the same as mine (including banner) and they get notifications in their sleep screen.  It's all very odd.

  • Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart... please help.

    Hi everyone
Ever since my iphoto library crashed (ran out of space without warning) my mcbook pro has been slow, unresponsive, freezes in sleep mode and won't restart...
I've since backed everything up on an external hard drive, removed the corrupt library, even reinstalled the operating software and there is now hardly anything on the hard drive, it still runs painfully slow. If I close the lid which puts it in sleep mode, it either doesn't go into sleep mode but instead the battery just gets drained and I find it completely empty of power (it won't start again unless plugged in), or it goes into sleep mode but just freezes when I try to reopen.
In iphoto (reinstalled) but even other applications it is painfully slow, not like a mac at all!
I am trying to go to genius bar with it but thinking maybe someone in this forum can help...
    Many thanks
    Andre

Hello. My mac pro early 2008 restarts after sleep mode and it works slower. I tested it with apple hardwear test and it seems to be ok. Thank you.

    Try this:
clone your system and repair it with Disk Warrior instead
Or try a clean test system install on another drive
A must: SmcFanControl 2.2 - a mere 400 rpm extra to keep air cooling up
Try to run w/o externals. MyBook included.
Is that a 7200.11 1TB? they had a lot of issues.
Run AHT off your OEM DVD.
2008 had to have EFI and SMC updates to deal with freezes on wake from sleep, and like all models, high inrush current.  Hopefully you have a UPS and is 1500VA unit.
When you do hard restart from power button, you almost certainly add more directory errors and to files requiring immediate attention to repair and rebuild the directory; and to scan and repair and delete cache and temp files and folders. A must. Invest in bootable backups SuperDuper along with Disk Warrior (or TechTool Pro 6, maybe Drive Genius 3 but I'd rate that #3).
TimeMachine has its own bad habits, especially with Green drives and some externals.
Try to rule out everything and then add back one at a time.
And it may just be time to replace the 8800, very common, a couple threads this week, and it is 3 yrs old.  Might want ATI 5870 or 5770.

    Hi,
Stamina mode doesn't work aparently on my phone. I try all the configurations but the sotware doesn't turn off the wifi and neither the mobile data coming from the operator when i block and turn off the screen of the device. I continue receiving information from all the apps and i haven't done any exception on the stamina configuration. Any idea to solve this?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Looks like you are talking about Low-Battery mode...
First make sure that you have turned it ON. After that just see "Activation" section under Low Battery mode to find at what level it has been set to activate.. By default, Low battery mode gets activated at 20% battery level.
