Slow Boot MBP 2012 SSD on 10.8.3 - Tried several fixes

Hi,
I have a MBP 2012, I upgrade it with Samsung SSD 830 256GB and 16GB RAM.
Boot: 50 seconds
Shut down: 20-30 seconds (uncheck documents on iCloud preferences and seems to shut down on 3 to 5 seconds)
Since the begining I figure how to make it work properly.
I made a backup with SuperDuper! and later, after some time when I want to repair permissions I realize I have lost my Recovery HD, after some Google magic I reinstall ML and solve the problem.
Start up time was too slow, then I do some search and anfer SMC + PRAM (NVRAM) reset everything seems to work fine, for some time.
Every time slow boots and shut downs come back, I do more searchs and find some fixes, but those fixes dont work the sameway for everybody, even on same machines and dont last forever.
Uninstall Little Snitch, Clean Caches, Fonts, Uninstall Parallels, Do some vudu with Cocktail and Onyx, Reinstall Mountain Lion, Update my System to the last 10.8.3 with the Combo Update, Selected my boot drive on system preferences (I just have one disc on my mac, no Fusion Drive so I dont understand why I have ti try this but did it).
I repeat some of the fixes, but always the same result, Boot time always on 50 seconds.
After some research on forums I look at mi Console and found those under BOOT_TIME

There is a  30 some seconds delay after this failed, on every boot I do.
Any clues to help me? I reported slow boots and shut downs on ML, hoping to see it solved some time on the near future, maybe on 10.8.4
This is the only thing "wrong" with my MBP, after boot is fast and love to work with it.
Thanks.
Sorry if I don't search enough, but try everything I found and can't solve it.

Waiting for an answer I decided to start from RecoveryHD, delete my Macintosh HD and Reinstall Mountain Lion.
I have my data safe, I just have to copy my Documents and stuff and reinstall a bunch of apps if everything goes fine.
I would like to solve this other than have to do a Clean Reinstall.
Last night try to do a clean reinstall, but nothing change, still at 50 seconds boot.
Start to thinking if its something related to my disk. Seems to be the in the last firmware available for the SSD 830. TRIM is not enabled at this moment on my mac, and write & read speeds are fine.
After last boot found this:
26/04/13 13:28:09,338 root[109]: /usr/libexec/ntpd-wrapper: scutil key State:/Network/Global/DNS not present after 30 seconds
Google a little an then found this:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4070843?start=0&tstart=0 and decided to try a Hardware Test. The first Test ant fine in less than 5 minutes, now trying a complete test: After 75 minutes everything is fine. Hardware test OK.
I will continue updating this if I can fix it.

  • Slow boot after installing SSD drive + Grub problem + Kernel panicks

    Hey
So i just got a Samsung 840 EVO, and was ready to see my system fly, so i installed Arch on it, the instalation was kinda weird, since im in the middle of some major developing for a startup i couldnt risk to lose time configuring my all system so what i did was this:
Install Arch on the SSD (/root on sdb1) while keeping my  other Arch install (/root on sda5) and sharing the /home and /swap (on sda6 and sda7) between both systems, i installed grub on sdb also because i didnt knew what to do
So now when i boot the laptop i get the grub from sda wich only has Old Arch and windows, if i press f9 at boot and boot from the ssd i go to sdb grub that has Old Arch, New Arch and Windows, since the SSD was instaled via a caddy it doesnt get recognized in the BIOS, but strangely i get 2 Universal Hard Drives (hdd and sdd) when pressing f9
So first question is, should i reeinstall grub on sda or is there a way to put the SDD as primary?
The other problem is that systemd-analyze is giving me worst times than with the hdd, and i dont see a huge improvement with the SSD as i should. Is it because i have /home /swap on the hdd? I have read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Solid_State_Drives and did as told.

You did not share what the kernel panic says, but I guess it has to do with your root file systems not mounted correctly. If it happens like 75% of the time, sounds like you are using /dev/sdax and it gets enumarated differently?  Use UUID's instead.
Your "slow boot" is a seperate problem, see the thread you linked too for how to fix that.
Its a fresh install but i alredy have DE and programs, i used Helmuth script to install all the stuff, just so i didnt forget to install stuff.
No idea what this means, but if it is some third party script downloaded off the internet - use them only if you understand exactly what it does, else the chances are you will run into some problems with no idea how you got there.  For simply keeping a list of packages to install, put them in a text file and pipe them into pacman (see also here.

  • Cannot boot to new SSD

I replaced my existing hard drive with a new Crucial MX100 256GB SSD. Had no problems installing the SSD and installed OS X Yosemite via usb key.
Problem I have is cannot boot to this SSD at all. I tried setting it as the startup disk but it doesn't appear in the list of disks.
But I checked it with Disk Utility and it's mounted. I ran a verify disk and no errors where found. I also erased it and set it to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    But still cannot boot

I created a new parition with a GUID partition table but still doesn't work. Still don't get the option to isntall to my SSD when i boot up with my Yosemite install USB. I also tried to make it the Startup Disk but it doesn't appear in that screen.
Could it be the data cable? Here's a screen shot of what I see in Disk Utility (sorry about the spotlight search bar)

  • Slow boot up on 2012 Mac mini with DIY fusion drive

Hello everyone, I bought a Mac mini (2012) 2 months ago with a stock 500GB HDD.
I added another SSD to make a DIY fusion drive, and everything is working fine, except that I'm experiencing a very slow boot up.
I have confirmed both by information from the OS and some tests with command line tools, that the fusion drive itself is a success and absolutely working fine.
The slow boot up happens on cold boot only (a reboot does not have such problem).
Symptom: the Mac mini is stuck on the gray blank screen for about 40 seconds, and then finally shows up the apple logo.
Everything after this is pretty fast and fine.
I have tried the following methods and none of them seems to help:
    1. Go Preferences -> Startup Disk, select the Machintosh HD. (Suggested by Apple in the Fusion Drive FAQ)
    2. Verify the whole disk along with the partition with Disk Utility.
    3. Reset NVRAM by holding Command+Option+P+R during boot up.
    4. Reset SCM/PMU.
Does anyone have an idea on the cause of my problem?
    Best regards and thank you.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Windows 7 booting time on MBP 2012

    Hello Everyone,
I really hope that someone will be able to help out. I've tried looking for an answer but could not find anything quite similar to my problem...
Yesterday I've equipped my MBP 2012 with SSD with windows 7 installed; I've then used BootCamp 5.X to install all the drivers and that part runs perfect!
My concern is that every time I start up my Mac I can see a white screen that lasts for about 40 seconds, only then it jumps to windows boot logo.
My question is whether everyone with Windows 7 on their Macs experience the same wait time? Is there anything that can be done so that it starts booting windows right away?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks guys!

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Slow Boot Times after installing new SSD and Lion

Can anyone please help interpret why I'm having slow boot times?  I have copied my console printout during the boot and it seems to be doing a repetitive action while booting.
    Thanks

  • Dual-boot on MBP Retina SSD

    Hi!
I've just started university and have been wondering whether to get a Mac or PC (I already own a desktop Windows PC). After much thought, I've decided to go the Mac "ultrabook" way, namely the MBP 13'' Retina (I might still choose the MB Air...).
I know that there are many alternatives to OneNote 2013 (whether special Mac ones or multiplatform like Evernote) but none has been as compelling as OneNote (especially because I have my desktop PC which I would also like to use to edit notes).
So I see two solutions :
    1) Use the OneNote web app during lectures
    2) Set up a OS X/Windows 8(.1) dual-boot
My question is, regarding option 2 : does a dual-boot "hurt" the SSD in some way like reducing it's lifespan? Furthermore, is it worth the effort? Does it work well?
    Thanks in advance!
    Jonas

Don't forget that you don't have to choose to "dual boot" only.  You have the option of runnign Windows in a virtual  machine environment like Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or Virtual Box.  Each of those allows you to create a virtual PC within your Mac, then boot that virtual PC just as if it were a real PC.  At that point, you are then running Windows and can install and run your Windows software on that virtual machine.  I have gone this route with my latest MacBook Pro, which is a Late 2011 model, and it is older and slower than the MacBook Pro with Retina that you are looking to buy...

  • MBP early 2011, slow boot, have tried: PRAM reset, SMC reset, permissions, login items, verbose mode. It stops for 2mins on spinning gear

I've read quite a few similar posts and tried most of the advice given. It seems to me though that it could be a number of things, but I just haven't found the right fix. I understand that getting an SSD would help greatly, but the MBP started doing the slow boots quite suddenly, so I don't think it's because of gradually filling the HDD with stuff. When I startup in verbose mode, it stops at running fsck, and just stays there for a while. Working in Lion is not as slow as the startup, but definitely not as fast as it should be, and shut downs are not slow at all.
I have used about 500gb of the 750gb HDD, and startup times used to be at about 30 secs, and are now over 2 mins, without increasing or decreasing.

Update: also tried Repair Disk and even reinstalling Lion (not clean).

  • MBP retina slow booting after repartitioning and cloning OS X

I bought a Macbook Pro retina 15" (512/16GB) few days back. OS : Mountain Lion 10.8.4
I wanted to partition the SSD to have Windows 7 in Boor Camp (120 GB), then a partition with ExFAT (260 GB) for shared data between Mac and Windows and lastly Mac HD (120 GB) with Mountain Lion OS X.
After searching in the net, I got this link :http://forums.macworld.com/index.php?/topic/139815-successful-setup-os-x-lion-bo otcamp-win7-data-partition/page__st__14 and followed the steps as described the steps in pane # 21.
So to state again what I did,
    1. Used the disk utility to resize the Macintosh HD to 120 GB.
    2. Make another partition of 260 GB in the remaining space. So I now have three partition, the first with Mountain Lion, the second (260 Gb) and the third (120 GB) free.
    3. Booting with the recovery option, cloned the Mac HD from first partition to the last partition.
    4. The system was booting fine with the newly cloned Mac HD (last partition).
    5. Then again booting with the recovery option erased the first partition and formatted with ExFat to make it Bootcamp.
After these steps the system is booting fine with the cloned Mac HD bootable drive but booting is very slow. It takes a minute to show up the apple logo. How can I fix this ?
Should I do a fresh installation of OS X in partition 3 ? Please advise.
    Thanks and best regards,

I solved the problem of slow booting.
Selecting the Mac HD from the start up disk option solved the problem. There was only one option : Mac HD , so I thought it is selected by default. But after selecting it manually and restarting, now boot takes only a few secs. Thanks.

  • Slow boot time on new SSD

I replaced my old hard drive with an SSD, and I'm getting boot times much slower than expected, between 40 and 45 seconds. I have already set my SSD as the startup disk in System Preferences, repaired disk permissions, performed a PRAM reset, and turned on TRIM. Application launching and shut down are extremely fast, so I'm not sure why I'm getting such slow boot times.
I'm running a Macbook Pro 15", early 2011, 2 GHz Intel Core i7 and 8GB RAM. My 256GB SSD still has 160 GB available.

Could it be related to the fact that the SSD is listed as disk two in the EtreCheck report?

  • Optical Drive/s eject on startup - SSD Slow Boot time also

    Hi guys,
Been researching this problem over and over with no avail.
I have installed a 240GB OWC 6GB SSD in this machine:
    Mac Pro MID 2010
    32 GB RAM
    240 SSD
    3 x 1T 7200 RPM Drives (bays 2 - 4)
    8-Core 2.4
    DVD Super drive
    LG BluRay Drive
Sonnet USB 3.0 Card  -  (Nothing plugged in)
Black Magic Intensity Pro -  (Nothing plugged in)
    Stock Graphics Card
    USB Keyboard (mac)
    Trackpad
    Wacom Bamboo Tablet
    Software:
    FCPX / Motion
    Adobe Suite
    Lion 10.7.3 FRESH / CLEAN
I have done a fresh install of lion 10.7.3!
I have selected my SSD as started up disk
    I have reset the PRAM
    I have reset SMC
I have no apps running at startup
    I have trashed the prefs
I have run disk utility and repair permisions on the SSD boot Drive
I have let Onyx do its thing with cleanup etc.
When I boot, the white screen appears for upto 30sec - 1.5mins, once I see the apple logo, it takes about 10sec to give me desktop and all is good. Everything is lightning fast, and I couldn't imagine my machince lacking performance in any way besides boot time. Shutdown is approx 2 seconds.
It appears that it waits for other possible boot drives, then gives up and boots from the SSD.
Sometimes my optical drives open during white screen on boot???
    Any suggestions to solve this?
    Thanks

Me brain-storming & thinking out loud about how I would go about troubleshoot this:
Every time you zap pram you need to reset the default boot volume.
I never use Onyx after looking at it and keeping it around for awhile, I have mixed idea that people are looking for a problem to fix and do I trust it? gets mentioned enough.
LG BR - can you take that out of the picture to test with it not connected?
Wacom Tablet - take it out of the equation for testing
USB3 - CallDigit? that has USB3 + SATA and looks and sounds good.
    Try w/o it also.
Just because there is nothing connected - I've seen a cable that just by being plugged in was the cause of slow boot.
Clone the OS to SSD? sounds like you didn't do that which in the past has had mixed results (sometimes with bad consequences and hard to know why, too many variables) but a clean install should be perfect. One person's though took "ages" to do what should have been very quick.
I assume you would also clone the SSD to backup as image or to another drive.
How does it boot from a 300GB partition off a platter?
3 x 1TB: are these an array? do any of them have a system on it? sounds like you don'[t as it might otherwise choose non-SSD boot drive.
An SSD from restart sometimes is fast(er) but from cold boot the system may not know it is there and how to send a signal to it?
What does OWC say? about SSD, about the USB3 card.
Even having 32GB RAM can take longer to POST.

  • Yosemite slow boot .... most of the time

I use EtreCheck to see what's running on my system.
    One such check showed this:
A little research showed that Warmd 'controls caches used during startup and login.  It is a launch daemon started by launchd during boot and is not mean to be invoked directly.'
Besides this single occurrence, I have not been able to see warmd creating a problem since.  (and I run EntreCheck after any slow startup)
Additionally, my 'slow startup' happens irregularly.  About 95% of the time.  Isn't that weird?!
Most of the time my system (defined below) just hangs at the progress bar for about 1.25 minutes.  Then starts.
Apple, what is your take on this?

  • Slow boot 4 mins +

    Hi guys,
I'm having problems with a very slow boot / shut down time (everytime). Once booted it works like a dream. I have a mid 2009 mbp upgraded RAM to 8gb and the OS to 10.8. Steps I have tried:
    -Safe boot
    -Different user account
    -Repair permissions
-Remove all startup programs in user accounts
I have looked in console to try and see what is hanging the boot and there are a few items that seem to be 10 secs +. However I am new to looking at the boot log and really have no idea what I'm looking for. I was hoping I could find some help decrypting the log / speeding up the boot here.
I will not paste it straight in as I'll wait for someone to throw a suggestion at me and I'm sure you don't need all of it so I'll wait to hear which parts are useful.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jason

I'm posting the console log between 2 boots ending with the most recent boot? I hope I read that right, I really wouldn't know which lines are the important ones. So here it is, sorry if it's more than you needed:
