Slow Boot Since Installing OS X 10.10.3

Hello All
Since installing Yosemite 10.10.3 on my MacBook Pro this morning I noticed that the boot up seems slower than usual. When I press the power button the chime sounds almost straight away then the screen stays black for about 10/15 seconds before the Apple logo appears. At this point the computer boots straight to the login screen. Everything else works fine. Previously there didn't seem to be a black screen between the chime and Apple logo. Any suggestions as to what this could be?
Thanks!

Thanks for asking this. I was a bit discouraged as I just bought a new March 2015 MacBook Pro with Touch Force trackpad. One of the reasons that I got rid of my mid-2009 MacBook Pro was that it took forever and a day to startup (like 3 minutes). After updating to 10.10.3, my new MacBook pro was taking about 5 times or more longer than out of the box to startup ... It restimulated my feelings about the old MacBook restart issues.
It seems that Apple should account for these hiccups and take care of them automatically with each update. How should we know that we need to go into settings and reset the startup disk. I just thought that I was going to have to accept a slower and slower startup with each OSX update.

  • Very slow boot after installing 10.10.3

insanely slow boot after installing 10.10.3, it takes 10times longer compare to 10.10.2, using MBA 2014

Open System Preferences, select Startup Disk, and make sure your internal drive is selected as the startup disk. Then click restart!
This worked for me, personally with the same issue.
    Good luck!

  • Mac mini slow startup since installing yosemite

I have a late 2012 mac mini and before installing Yosemite it would take just a few seconds to start up when I turned it on. Now since installing Yosemite it is a lot slower to start up, and i get a "progress bar" when I turn it on, which I never had when running Mavericks. Any ideas how to fix this?

  • Slow boot after installing SSD drive + Grub problem + Kernel panicks

    Hey
So i just got a Samsung 840 EVO, and was ready to see my system fly, so i installed Arch on it, the instalation was kinda weird, since im in the middle of some major developing for a startup i couldnt risk to lose time configuring my all system so what i did was this:
Install Arch on the SSD (/root on sdb1) while keeping my  other Arch install (/root on sda5) and sharing the /home and /swap (on sda6 and sda7) between both systems, i installed grub on sdb also because i didnt knew what to do
So now when i boot the laptop i get the grub from sda wich only has Old Arch and windows, if i press f9 at boot and boot from the ssd i go to sdb grub that has Old Arch, New Arch and Windows, since the SSD was instaled via a caddy it doesnt get recognized in the BIOS, but strangely i get 2 Universal Hard Drives (hdd and sdd) when pressing f9
So first question is, should i reeinstall grub on sda or is there a way to put the SDD as primary?
The other problem is that systemd-analyze is giving me worst times than with the hdd, and i dont see a huge improvement with the SSD as i should. Is it because i have /home /swap on the hdd? I have read https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Solid_State_Drives and did as told.

You did not share what the kernel panic says, but I guess it has to do with your root file systems not mounted correctly. If it happens like 75% of the time, sounds like you are using /dev/sdax and it gets enumarated differently?  Use UUID's instead.
Your "slow boot" is a seperate problem, see the thread you linked too for how to fix that.
Its a fresh install but i alredy have DE and programs, i used Helmuth script to install all the stuff, just so i didnt forget to install stuff.
No idea what this means, but if it is some third party script downloaded off the internet - use them only if you understand exactly what it does, else the chances are you will run into some problems with no idea how you got there.  For simply keeping a list of packages to install, put them in a text file and pipe them into pacman (see also here.

  • Graphic glitch at boot since installing ML. Any clue why?

Since installing Mountain Lion on my late 2011 MBP I have been experiencing graphic glitches every once and a while.
The one thing that has stayed consistent is the glitch when I boot up. I get big square blocks that come up as I boot. (Pictured above)
Anyone have any idea why my mac would do that? Could it be a hardware problem?

I shut down my Mac overnight and it as I booted today no graphic glitch occured, tried 3 times to see if it would come back and nothing so far. I've never had any issues with overheating and I keep track of it pretty well with iStat Pro. Last night when it was doing it, the temp was around 170 after booting.
I'm going to try to play a game or something to push the temp up a bit and reboot again. I'll update in a few and let you know if thats the prob. I've been running an FC but I've left it at the default 2000 rpm, I'm not sure how that would affect it because it haven't been that hot to begin with.
    Thanks for all the advice.
I'm thinking maybe I better make a stop at an Apple store and see what it says before college starts back up and I don't have my mac.

  • Slow iMac since installing Mavericks

    Hey everyone-
I have been expereincing speed problems ever since installing the new OS.  Prior to Mavericks my iMac ran just fine.  I know it is an older computer.... but it doesn't seem right that a OS upgrade would cause speed problems like this.
I took it into a Apple store, and the Genius poked around for a bit.... he thought the problem might have been coming from the 'Actions server' I had installed.  This is a server that works with an iOS app- I have since deleted that server and all related files, and I am still having speed issues.

  • Slow boot after installing "SAP NetWeaver 7.01 - ABAP Trial Version"

    Hello everyone,
I have successfully installed "_SAP NetWeaver 7.01 - ABAP Trial Version_" on my personal computer, but since, booting is really really slow.
I guess it's because what I installed launchs lots of processes. However, as I don't want to use SAP everyday (it's still my personal computer), I'd like :
    1) to get my performances back without uninstalling SAP
    2) be able to start all those processes when I start SAP.
Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

after reading this thread, I resolved to NOT start services automatically, only when I wanted to run minisap. I am in Vista Home Premium, by the way. I made 3 services (see below) Manual instead of Automatic, and then created a couple of .BAT files to start and stop them. I run the starting BAT before launching minisap, and run the stopping BAT after I have shut minisap down... I have to run them as administrator, of course. Here's my code, which works fine for me:
    StartServices.bat
    NET START XServer
    NET START "SAP DBTech-NSP"
    NET START SAPNSP_00
    StopServices.bat
    NET STOP SAPNSP_00
    NET STOP "SAP DBTech-NSP"
    NET STOP XServer
The order of the commands is important, the middle one takes the longest to start/stop and is launching MaxDB. If the service name contains spaces you need the double quotes!!!

  • Slow booting, Cannot install OS X Mavericks

Hello, i am having problems with my macbook pro mid 2010. The issue started when the computer was taking way too long to boot +15 min. When it finally did boot  it was crawling slow. Literally the mouse cursor was lagging and everything took forever to load. I did a SMC reset and a Pram Reset and nothing. I then tried to boot in in safe mode which was faster still choppy bot not lagging. I saved all my stuff and decided to re-install mavericks. When i try to install mavericks via usb or even with the internet recovery its still way to slow. I am stuck in a grey window with the apple logo and a circle spinning around for about 15-20 min. When i finally get to the installation setup it is again too slow and again the cursor lags a lot. I left the installation for 2 days and it was still not finish did smc reset and pram reset again and same thing. i Have tried installing the os x via usb, internet recovery, and even the cds and i cannot install it. Way too slow. Have tried the usb on another macbook and it works great. I am stuck here any help will be really appreciated it.

OGLETHORPE's suggestion to run diagnostics is a good one. The RAM test can't be considered definitive if it doesn't fail but since you said the computer runs from the Win8 drive I'm not so suspicious of RAM. I am however suspicious of the hard drive. Even if it isn't running the OS the computer will be polling the drive and waiting for information from it which could explain the lag. A couple summers ago I was dealing with a computer that was intermittently slow, started showing beachballs, and passed all diagnostics. After swapping out RAM for a known good set with no results I popped in a new drive and that was it.

  • Slow Speeds since Install. Mods??

Any Mod brave enough to look into this one ????
It's gotten to the point of me not trusting a thing Support say and they don't seem to listen to a word I say.
I was told before signing up "Infinity will never slow down"
"The speed we estimate for your line is the speed you will get"
Since having Infinity Installed 04/04/2011, my speeds during the day are good at 35mb,
but slows down every night, sometimes as low as 4mb.
I reported this to BB support, explaining clearly that the connection is fine during the day,
but seems to be suffering from congestion slowdowns in the evenings.
I've been on the phone constantly since opening another fault report on 7th May.
The first few days consisted of BB Support calling me back in the mornings (when the speed is fine),
telling me they changed something and it should be ok now,
followed by me phoning at night when the speed dropped again.
This was escalated a couple of times to the "engineering dept.", still no change.
I soon realised that if I said my speed was fine at the time they asked, nothing was being done.
    11th May.
An engineer was booked for my home for the 12th 8am-1pm.
I tell them this was probably a waste of time as the problem only appears at night,
and the line is fine during the day.
    12th May.
Engineer calls about noon, very friendly,I explain the problem and we have a nice chat,
line check was good 40/10, no surprise there then.
BB Support phoned me as soon as the engineer had booked off the job,
basically telling me the fault had been fixed as an engineer had been out and found no fault.
I argued that they couldn't say that as the slowdowns only happen at night.
I point out to them I've been using speedtester.bt and ask them to look at the results, they totally ignored this.
Back on phone that night. The vicious circle starts again, another couple of days of callbacks telling me they changed something, and me calling them at night.
    15th May.
Escalated again,I'm told a higher level engineer would visit the exchange and then my home.
    16th May.
The same friendly openreach engineer turns up at 9am, I just smile and tell him he knows where it is.
No faults on the line and he explains he has nothing to do with the exchange.
Callback from BB Support around 3pm asking if my speed was fine now.
I had just finished another speedtest (7.3mb) so, no it wasn't.
Another engineer appointment made for 17th
    17th May.
No engineer. 2 callbacks, go over the same old story. Engineer booked for 18th.
18th May. No engineer. callback that night,by now I know the script by heart. Engineer booked for 19th.
19th May. No engineer. Another booking for 20th.
20th May Engineer calls, we have a chat, I explain the problem, engineer leaves.
By this time I feel sorry for these Openreach guys, sent out to jobs they can't possibly fix.
They could be out connecting other people to this superfast connection that I'm not getting.
Callback in the afternoon, was told the engineer had contacted BT Wholesale, but no further info was given. They asked how my speed was, I ask them to call tomorrow after I log the usual slowdowns with speedtester.

Thanks for your post,  but I've already been through all your points above.
I have taken continual speedtests since the install with speedtester.bt as well as others.
The really slow period is usually from around 8pm till 11pm.
The 3 results above are just from last night.
    I keep records of everything
The problem is that nobody looks at the speedtester results.
If they did, they could see exactly when this was happening and maybe take the proper action,
and save me going over the same sad story when speaking to the Indian call centre.

    Forgot to add
I asked BB Support to have my line monitored as this was happening during peak times,
    they totally ignored this suggestion.

  • Slow performance since installing Mavericks

Our Mac is used by four seperate users with their own log in's.  Since installation of Mavericks the performance for two of the users has slowed dramatically to where they get "beachball" for minutes at a time.
The other two users don't experience any slow down at all.
Where do I begin to look for issues and/or ways to speed things up?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mac running slow, worse since installing Yosemite from Lion

Mac started to run slow every now and then, updated to yosemite and now getting worse, slow to open programmes like iPhoto (getting jammed when using), websites and switching between the two.  Get a coloured wheel often.  More worryingly recently when waking from sleep, the left half of my screen is distorted like an old unturned TV!!  I am a typical user with little knowledge on how macs work, so am nervous to do much.  Have included the etracheck report for info.  Can somebody tell me if i should take it to a mac "shop" or have any advice on fixing myself.  many thanks

Based on the information you need more RAM for what you are running concurrently.
You OS X installation is defective and needs to be reinstalled.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Download and reinstall 10.10.1

  • XP system not booting since installing ITunes

I successfully installed a 2.0 USB card onto my XP box, however the installation of the iPOD drivers and Ituns gernated errors, and sicne then, my PC will not boot in normal mode, even with last known configuration (The iPOD itself, though connected during the entire boot, gives a normal usage display rahter then "do not disconnect" throughout the driver laoding phase, which never finises. It is however, possible to boot the device, and access the USB and iPOD in SafeMode. What should I do?

No dice. The computer is about 3 years old, with USB 1.1 and sound native to the board (Intel board). I installed a 2.0 usb PCI card without incident, but after installing the Ipod software, a conflict seems to have arisen. Boots fine in Safe Mode with Networking. Leading me to think there is some sound driver conflict.

  • Slower bootup since installing iTunes 9

Has anyone else experienced this? I was absolutely stoked at how fast my computer booted up after upgrading to 10.6, but I've noticed at least an additional 15 seconds to boot up time since upgrading to iTunes 9.
Realistically speaking, the computer still probably boots faster than when I had 10.5 on it. I was just a little bummed to see a noticeable difference to boot time after upgrading a program that already existed on the drive.

This question really wasn't answered but I was sick of having it open, apparently nobody really cares.

  • Slow booting after installing SP2

    Hi,
I have been experiencing this problem after istalling SP2 on my Toshiba M30. I istalled SP2 few times before and unistalled it for that same reason. The boot up time is now around 2.5 min istead of 30 sec before istallation. I installed SP2 on a cleaned machine (removed spyware, cleaned registry, defragmented and so on), followed all necessary steps. But still the same. I get the machine loading around 1 min before it gets to wallpaper, before SP2, right after the welcome sound it went to wallpaper, then icons and the bar and I was done. Now, welcome sound, then 30-40 sec, then wallpaper and nothing for 1-1.2 mins and then I get icons, bar and machine becomes operational. Nobody from my fiends have this problem. Please, if anybody knows what to do - let me know. Thank you!

    Hi
As far as I can remember the SP2 installs additional firewall and security settings. Its possible that all this features loads at the beginning. This takes several times.
You could check the background processes and the applications which start at the beginning.
This can be check in the msconfig. Type the command msconfig in the run window and check the startup tab.
The booting procedure takes a little bit longer on my notebook because of the antivirus application which loads at the beginning.

  • SLOW IMAIL SINCE INSTALLING MAVERICK

I have read through several comments and don't see a solution.  My phone will register emails and there's nothing I can do to get it to come into my computer imail, it just comes in slowly on its own.  It is extremely frustrating.

There are settings in Mail that specify how often the Mail Server on the Internet is queried for new Mail:
Yellow on that  Disk Usage display is "Your stuff". Of that, only un-needed old downloads can be modified in any meaningful way.
