First try this...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.
Then...
One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts (Users & Groups in later OSX versions)>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed. Or an errant process eating up RAM.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.
Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

TC slow ethernet speed w/ mac mini, not anti-virus

new TC 1tb, running wireless to one macbook pro, one sony laptop, and ethernet to mac mini. update done to TC, including airport utility. no anti virus.
using it as the primary wireless source, with cable modem.
first backup was awfully slow, both by wireless, then do-over by ethernet.
speed on local network streaming mp4s through ethernet cable is bad to awful. copying files from TC to usb (in mac mini) is awful. searching for songs through itunes is slow (though library is 500gb).
the heat explanation is of course, just laughable. you give me a beautiful flat piece of equipment and you don't expect me to put my mac mini on top? terrible design flaw if true.
also, tried the re-boot and the shortened DCHP time.
no other good explanations that i could find.
So unless there are some great ideas out there, i guess
i should understand from all the threads that this thing just doesn't work as a primary file server. and its not so good at backup either.
its just too slow. please help if anyone has another suggestion, but i think that regardless i have to take it back.

what a waste of my time this has been.

just bought a new 12" Powerbook and it will not connect to my local dial up ISP any faster than 28k. I've had the same ISP for over ten years. I've had the same phone line in my same apartment for over ten years. The G3 iBook I just sold connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 iMac I have at home connects at 56k almost every time. The Performa 6400 I used to have connected at 56k almost every time. The G4 Sawtooth I have in my music studio a couple of blocks away using a different phone line connects at 56k almost every time. Same ISP for over ten years, two different phone lines that work fine with four other Macs, the only Mac I've had that won't connect at 56k is my brand new Powerbook. It won't connect at 56k using OS 10.3.9 or 10.4 or 10.4.4. I tested the connection with CNET's online modem bandwidth test page and the Powerbook modem was connecting at about 26k.
so I took my PowerBook to the Apple store in San Francisco, they sent it to be repaired and when it came back said they replaced the modem, but it still won't connect at 56k when all my other Macs will.
so I took my PowerBook back to the Apple store in San Francisco, and they connected it to a phone line and got a 31k connection and told me, Well the modem connects, so as far as we're concerned it works, and 56k is only the maximum theoretical connection speed and Apple does not guarantee you will actually get that modem baud rate, so we are not going to do anything else about it. I told them that there is nothing theoretical about all my other Macs connecting to the same ISP at higher speeds than the PowerBook and that Apple should be able to test the PowerBook to determine if their own tech guys can get a 56k connection with my PowerBook. The Apple store "genius" called his manager, who refused to do any more work on the computer.

After installing a licensed Windows 8.1 with boot camp on my mac mini (2012,i7,4gb ram) my mac os Mavericks have trouble with starting,and i can't run recovery and safe mode.Another problem-i don't have sound in windows,but windows show me no troubles,and red light apear!!!Please help!

Thank you for the question. It sounds like you are trying to install Windows 8.1 using Boot Camp 5 on your MacBook Pro. Currently, Windows 8.1 is not a supported version of Windows for Boot Camp:

Creating external ssd boot drive on mac mini late 2012

I just bought mac mini (i7) late 2012 and have ordered Lacie rugged 120GB ssd. I would like to create the new ssd as a boot disk. I have already installed quite a few applications on hard drive. What should I do in order to create the external boot disk? I have for instance Adobe Photpshop, Adobe Premiere Elements and o course Apple's video and photo editing software. Should I also transfer the applications (and which) to the new SSD and how should I do it in order to keep activations etc. Detailed instructions are wished, because I am newbie with Mac,

I am not clear why you want to do this, because it sounds to me like you want to make the new drive a complete duplicate of the internal drive. I do not see the point of this. If it is for security reasons, you need only an inexpensive external drive to serve as a Time Machine backup.
However, if that is indeed what you want to do, all you need is a program like Carbon Copy Cloner. Use it to make a copy of the internal drive on the external. CCC will make it bootable.
As far as Adobe activations are concerned, your copies on the same computer will retain their activated status.
Detailed instructions:
1. download CCC
2. connect the external
3. run CCC to duplicate the internal to the external.

External boot disc for MAc Mini

Please forgive the naivety of this question but if some one could confirm this once and for all in simple terms I would be grateful.
I want to have an external hardrive on which I can place OSX so that I can boot from it, rather than the Mini's built in drive, not least so that I can run the disc utility on the built in hardrive. My question is does this external hardrive have to be USB or Firewire or does it not matter? My Mini is an Intel Duo with 2GB RAM running 10.4.9.

That's exactly right, yes. Since it's not a bootable volume as far as your mini is concerned, it won't give it as an option to install MacOS on it.
Incidentally, once GUID partitioned, you don't have to actually INSTALL MacOS if you want to use it in place of your internal drive. You can use CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! to clone the internal to the external as a complete single operation, which will leave you with a bootable external that is an exact duplicate of the internal drive. After that, once the external has been tested out, you can then remove whatever you wish from the internal drive, or use it as a backup for the external.
Either/both CCC and SuperDuper! can be downloaded from www.versiontracker.com.

Mac mini Core Solo is a great deal slower then 1.5ghz mac mini G4??

I have two mac minis, one has a 1.5 Ghz G4 and the other has a 1.5 Ghz Core Solo. Both have 512mb of RAM and OS X 10.4.7. I have the same software installed between them. They both have the latest updates for Office 2004 installed, both have the latest system updates, latest Firefox updates, both have latest Adobe Reader updates, and both have Quark 6.5 installed.
The Core Solo mac mini is WAY slower then the G4, Entourage in particular is almost slow to the point it is unworkable. Is this due to the Rosetta emulation? What can I do to improve this, will increasing the ram to 1 GB clear these speed issues or am I going to have to return this mini and get one with a Core Duo?
The current sluggishness on the Core Solo mini is unbearable, literally my Powerbook G4 667mhz with 768mb of ram is loads faster then this mini is. I'm thinking more RAM will do the trick, but wanted to bounce this off of some other experts here first. Thanks.

Yes, almost certainly. Microsoft Office is not yet Intel-native, so it's gonig to run more slowly than a native edition would. The same will apply to any PowerPC-only software.

I can't say for certain, but other users have reported that increasing the RAM to 1GB (or beyond) has made significant improvements in performance.

Cycling re-boot on my mac mini

My Mac Mini has gone into a cycle of constant re-boots. I've tried the following to fix this:
- Held down shift key to get into single mode (Ignores me)
- Held down 'c' to boot from install disk - tries, then ejects install disk - install disk mounts OK on my macbook pro
- Held down shift to eject install disk (ignores me)
- Held down 'T' for it to be come a mountable disk - this works. I've done a disk repair with disk utility and there are no disk errors. Everything looks OK on the disk.
- Disconnected all USB drives [three of them were 'locked', but the 'chflags nouchg /Volumes/{name}' command seems to unlock them OK.
What can be going on? I can't see why it won't boot from the install disk, or why it is in this constant cycle. What I wanted to do was a non-destructive re-install and re-upgrade to get back to normal, but, without it booting from the Install disk I have a problem!
Is there any way I can do an update and install from my Macbook Pro onto it?

Sorry - just a rider to the previous question.
My suspicion (since everything else looks fine) is that there might be either a corruption of the boot sectors or some permissions problem - I think the latter because it seems to get further than just the first boot since it spends time with the white apple showing and the busy icon below it before re-booting.
Is there a way to repair permissions with Disk Utility on a remote disk, apart from booting from the DVD - because I can't, of course, boot from the DVD?
Of course the worse interpretation is that there's some fundamental hardware flaw preventing booting from both the disk and the DVD. How would I establish that??

Long Boot Time - 2011 Mac Mini, 10.7.4

I'm experiencing a pretty substantial delay when booting my Mac mini; it takes about 70 seconds from power button to desktop. I'm using a newly installed OWC SSD and a fresh install of OS X 10.7.4. After doing performing some basic troubleshooting (repair permissions, clear caches, reset SMC, re-affirm startup disk, etc.), I decided to boot into verbose mode and see where the process was getting delayed
The system boots normally until I see the message "AppleThunderboltNHI::enablePower - turn power off, status = 0x0, result_value = 0x0". The boot process hangs there for 45 seconds before the desktop appears. The kernel.log confirms this:

Any ideas about what's causing this boot delay? Although my SSD performs great once the desktop appears, the boot time leaves much to be desired. My system used to boot faster from my FireWire hard drive!

Sorry for the delay. I tried an experiment, which I think confirms your suspicion about the HDMI monitor. It's actually a DVI monitor using the Apple HDMI->DVI adapter that shipped with the Mac mini. I reinstalled OS X 10.7 (10.7.3) and didn't perform any updates or software installations. This cut down on the log messages, and eliminated some other variables.
Below are the kernel.log entries for two successive reboots. The first boot is a normal one, with the monitor attached. The second boot occurred with the HDMI adapter unplugged; I plugged it back in after several minutes to verify that the "EDID" message is triggered by this action.

Mounting external USB at boot on ppc mac mini 10.4 Tiger

Hello,
I'm trying to find out the best way to mount an external USB HD on boot, on Tiger. The default behaviour of the system is to mount external devices when a specific user logins. That's smart, because in theory we don't need to lose time mounting the device on boot first, and secondly MacOSX will mount the external device using the user's specific permissions to access the data.
My problem is that I don't want to wait for a login, I want to mount the external device as soon as the system starts. The system is a mac mini tiger 10.4.11 with macports installed. I manage it via "Remote Desktop" and (mostly) ssh.
I'm thinking about creating a wrapper and a launchd (plist) file.
Is there another way, using the kinda weird fstab syntax on using cli commands like "automount"?

The iOS simulator runs very slow on my new Mac mini. Any ideas on how to speed it up?

I am trying to demonstrate a new iPhone app using the Mac mini and the iOS Simulator software. It runs, but it runs very slowly -- not acceptable for a presentation. Any ideas so I can make it run faster?

Slow boot up in Mac book Pro

Running Leopard with Latest firmware. Have had increasingly slower boot times over the past 3-5 months. Boot times exceeding 3-4 minutes. I have only a couple of programs that load at boot time, and run in the back ground. And in fact have used them since using Tiger OS with no boot problems to speak of. No compatibility issues, w/ Leopard to my knowledge. Boot times just getting longer, Help?

Duplicate fonts were slowing me down on startup. Give this a try. It seems rather low-tech, but it really did the trick for me.
Open FontBook
- You'll see a bullet next to each of your duplicate fonts
Select All your fonts
Click Edit, Resolve Duplicates
Reboot
Let us know if that works.

How to eject boot disk from mac mini

I have a 1.66/duo mac mini on 10.4.11. I trying to upgrade to 1.5.4, but the installation procedure said that it was impossible on this computer. Now I cant eject de 10.5.4 installation disc

After you get the disk out of your computer, is the disk a grey disk from another Apple system? If yes, you won't be able to use it to upgrade, as you need a black retail disk. The grey disks are locked to the systems they are manufactured for and identified on the label.

Slow sharepoint loading by Mac mini to 10.4.11 Server

My Intel Mac mini 1.66 GHz Core Duo with 2Gb RAM takes almost 30 seconds to connect to sharepoints, but our iMac 17" 1.83 GHz Core Duo with 2Gb RAM connects almost instantaneously. How can I speed up the mini?
At startup I have set our Mac desktops to connect to some sharepoints hosted on our 10.4.11 PowerMac server. Each one connects to the relevant sharepoints on the server and then I run an Apple Script to close the Finder windows that open. This all happens automatically after logging in on the desktop Mac.
I just cannot understand the difference in sharepoint connection performance from two near identical Macs.
Can anyone please suggest some way to reduce the time it takes for the mini to connect to the sharepoints? It is always possible I set things up differently or wrong, but where would I have to go and look to find out? Or is the fact that the iMac has a Graphics card which can draw the Finder windows more quickly the reason? I'm stumped. I actually don't need the Finder windows to open (I'd prefer them not to) but I cannot find any other way to connect the sharepoints at login.

I timed it today more accurately. From pressing Enter after typing my login details it took 20 seconds for OS X to become usable in my user account, then a further 20 seconds for the first sharepoint Finder window to become available, and the sixth one hadn't finished loading until 1m 38s had passed from pressing the Enter key.
This seems rather a long time. Any ideas why this might be?

When i boot up my mac mini on my bedroom TV...

there is no picture on the screen. But if i turn it on then off on my living room tv THEN turn it on connected to my bedrrom tv it works fine, untill I turn it back off again, any suggestions?? Ive just upgraded to Mac OS X Lion, and im using an HDMI cabel.

There seems to be a bug with 10.7 and HDMI handshake with certain models of TVs, I have the same problem, as well as many others. I would AppleCare and report the issue, the more people call the faster they will create a bug fix and push out 10.7.1.
