Slow booting and shut down. How?

I just bought my macbook pro 13" just a month ago, and now the motherboard has crashed. Sent for repair and is useable now, but the booting up and shutting down took longer than before. What should I do?

Hey Joseph! Thanks for your help. Now the shutting down seems to be faster by a bit. But it still shows the blue screen which i hate to see. Starting was as usual slow.
The only program that needs running upon start up was MSN. And it usually doesn't gets signed in by itself even when it's checked at "auto sign in". And I'm not sure if msn itself is having any issue, or has it got something to do with my mac, because sending messages online was kinda terrible. There were many times where I typed a chunk of messages and after 5-10 mins then they told me that it wasn't sent at all. Plus it keeps logging me out. SO ANNOYED.
And lastly, safari web browser KEEPS CRASHING. that i have to force quit it many many times. I wrote to Apple support alr. Hope that they will get back to me soon abt this. It's kinda frustrating to use it when there are so many issues whereby I don't even know the cause of.

  • Extremely slow boot and shut down

I've been experiencing VERY slow boot up and shut down times (in excess of one minute for both booting and shutting down). I've removed everything from my login items and I still have the same problem. I have a late 2007 black MacBook with 10.5.3 on it. Any help would be appreciated!

Try running a cache cleaner and clear out all system and user cache files. Onyx is a good freeware application for this. There are several others of course.

  • Extremely slow boot and shut down process; very stance crashes;

I have re-installed OSX lion three times already. Everytime I carried out a clean install on my Macbook core duo 2 3Gb ram, 500GB hard drive, 2006 model.
All the times the OS appears to be as slow as ever on booting (approx 2 minutes or more).
The apple logo stays on for quite a while then It disappears and the cursor appears on screen then the logo comes back on again for another couple of seconds and then the desktop slowly appears but still i have to wait for another couple fo seconds before I can use it.
Then once the desktop is up and running if I open safari along with Mail both of them stay unresponsive for a while before I can get to do some work.
Not to mention the shut down process; it takes at times up to 2 minutes.
I checked all the processes in the Activity Monitor and there doesn't seem to be any process slowing or taking loads of memory.
The only app that i could think of is Quicksilver which I have promptly removed/unisntalled without any changes in boot times etc.
Is there any other thing/test I could carry out to find out or resolve this issue??
I have also run disk utility Permission check/fix, disk check from Rescue disk but nothing seems to work and I can't find anything to help on the net.

  • MacPRO boots and shuts down in 1 motion

    Evevning forum,
After returning home I have tried to bootup my MacPRO (early 2008) and the machine is acting weird. Before I left all was working fine. It seems as soon as I press the start button the computer tries to power up and shuts down straight away, within in seconds. Could this be a power supply issue as many seem to have fallen fate to this issue. If so wha are the cost of a new one?
    Thanx in advance

    Symptoms
If your Macintosh computer won't turn on, here's how to troubleshoot it. Please keep in mind that although your computer may display similar symptoms that prevent it from showing video, this article discusses what to do if the computer won't turn on, meaning that when you press the power button:
You don't hear a startup chime.
You don't hear any fan or drive noise.
The power button or power indicator doesn't light up at all.
If your computer doesn't display any video, it may display one or more of these similar symptoms when you press the power button:
You may hear a startup chime.
You may hear fan or drive noise.
You may see the power button or power indicator light up.
If any of these conditions occurs, see Troubleshooting: My computer has no video instead.
    Resolution
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Make sure that the power cord is plugged into a working wall outlet, and that it's properly connected to the power adapter. (To check if the wall socket is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.)
Make sure that the power adapter is properly connected to the power port on the side or back of the computer.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged into the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
Reset the computer's PMU, SMC, or PRAM. Refer to the instructions for your model:

  • MacBook Pro won't boot and shut down on its own.

Hi, I am running a Macbook Pro. My problem is that the OS froze during use, and I could not move the cursor. As which point I force shut down by holding the powerswitch. From that point onwards I could not get the machine to boot, it keep getting stuck at the grey screen with Apple icon. After loading at the grey screen for 15-20 mins it shuts down on its own.
I've tried to reset SMC (shift-control-option + power button) and PRAM (Command-Option-P-R) but it dint work. Please help. Thanks.

It appears your problem occured after you upgraded to 10.8.2, but if you did it right after the SSD and RAM switch then it's hard to tell exactly what is causing the issue.
I advise returning back to factory, hold command option r boot and wipe everything and reinstall 10.8
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
If the problem continues, then make a warranty/AppleCare call, hopefully you didn't strip the screw heads or leave any other tell tale damage inside.
If your fine on 10.8.2 for some time, then switch the RAM and do a hardware test extended or Rember or Memtest to make sure the new RAM is not the issue.
If that's fine then Carbon Copy Cloner to the external SSD and hold option key down to boot from it and test that.
Then do the internal SSD switch and test that.
Take your time, Mac's are so finicky and you can't just slap this or that and expect it all to immediatly work like it should.

  • Is Lion slow booting up and shutting down?

After I installed Lion, my macbook pro is slow to boot up and shut down.  How can you turn off "re-open windows when logging back on"?

The beeps on startup are often indicative of RAM problems.  The opening chime is the only normal noise on startup.  Shutdown should be essentially silent.  To the Apple store, PRONTO!
    Ciao.

  • Boot Problem! Slow start up, shut down and wake from sleep mode.

I have a MBP late 2009. I used it a long time whit Snow Leopard, few month ago i did an upgrade to Mavericks.
To start up it takes 30-40 seconds until appear the apple logo. Then 2 minutes more to start up the sistem.
When I wake the machine from sleep mode it takes 40 seconds to be working.
    Shut down 40 seconds.
Even sometime it get frezze using only Safari.
    Things I have tried:
    Reinstall Snow Leopard (clean install)
    Install Mavericks (clean install)
    Replace the HD
    ¿Any idea?
    Sorry for mi poor English

    Chepoka,
have you ensured that all of your installed software is compatible with Mavericks?
If you boot into Safe mode, does it still take 40 seconds to awaken from sleeping, or to shut down? (It will take longer to start up in Safe mode because it will perform “sanity checks” on your boot disk.)
If you have a bootable external disk with Mavericks installed, use Startup Manager to boot from the external disk. Does it take just as long to boot, awaken from sleep, and shut down from the external disk as it does from the internal disk?

  • Recent freezing and shutting down every down 10-15 minutes and hard to log in to internet very slow

My son has 2009 Macbook white version and recently (last week or so) freezing all the time, cannot log on to internet, and shuts down every 10-15 minutes. Is there a download (free hopefully to clean it up for any spyware or maleware). He is a student and very busy in University and cannot be without the computer?

He will need something to back up onto like an external hard drive. The disks are necessary if the hard drive needs to be repaired, you can't repair the boot volume so you need to start up from an install disc and run Disk Utility from there. When you talk to him have him resettle SMC and pram, sometimes unexpected shutdowns can be corrected that way. The freezing is another issue, I'm concerned with the health of his hard drive. Another thing to ask when you talk to him is how much total space and how much free space does his hard drive have?

Hi There is a ghost search bar on my iMac that flashes continually, even during start up and shut down. How can i make this go away? Please help. x

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

How do I merge AppleID accounts and shut down the old one (when I have no password and the security questions aren't working?)

You cannot merge Apple ID accounts, that has never been supported.
You can contact the Apple ID Security folks per the listing in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699 and they can help reset security questions and get the account working.

  • Start up and shut down is slow after erasing free space using disk utility?

I went to Disk Utility, clicked Erase, and then "Erase Free Space." When I saw that it was going to take 1 hour and 30 minutes, I tried closing disk utility. It wouldn't let me exit, so instead I pressed "Skip." But when you hover over the "Skip" button it says, "Erase all data and reformat the disk."
I'm wondering if the fact that I pressed the skip button has anything to do with my computer shutting down/starting up A LOT slower now. If so, what can I do to fix it?
    Thanks!

Just wanted to give an update. I called Apple and apparently, you shouldn't empty the free space using disk utility while you're logged in. I had to insert the Installations CD and press the "C" button while my computer restarted, and used Disk Utility from there. My start up and shut down speed still isn't exactly the way it was before, but this definitely made a difference.
Thank you to those who replied to my question!
