Slow brush in CS5

Hi
Just bought CS5 and the usual problem that so many others are having. The functions work fine but when it comes to paint with a brush it lags a second behind. The bigger the brush the more it lags. Turning off openGL does nothing and changes the setting to basic only gives a slight improvement. It was a big file I was working with (180MB) and so I was able to cut it down (19MB) but nothing changed. I realise this isn't much different from the other posts of it's kind but I'm including my system info to see if anyone can gauge anything from that. Never had this problem with CS2.

I hope they're sending you another, different card.
An anecdote I'm fond of recalling...
A long time ago I had a very expensive nVidia Quadro FX video card.  It cost over $1000 new at the time.
When I moved up to Vista and Aero I was assured that the card could and would handle it.  But it never handled it very well, even though nVidia claimed it should, and even though they released new "unified" drivers that included it.  It was never stable, even though performance was acceptable.  Things were better with the original drivers shipped on the Vista disc, but even with those it didn't work right, and the system would crash from time to time.  With the new driver releases things were actually getting worse.  It became clear that nVidia had left me behind, even though I had given them a lot of $$$ only a year before.
I fought the issue for literally months, and I was beginning to think all the bad hype about Vista was true.
Finally, in exasperation I went down to the local high tech store, and for about a hundred bucks I picked up a VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 4670 with 1GB DDR3.
The difference was NIGHT AND DAY, and I'm still using that card today with Windows 7.
I've never looked back.  The only reason I have a nVidia card on one workstation here is that it's primarily a server and sees no real interactive use (save for some software testing, for which I find it advantageous to have various different video card brands on hand).
If they don't ship you an ATI card, try something like the new 5670 (or even a 4670 if you can find one really cheap).

  • Slow Brushes In Photoshop CS5

    Hi:
I've just started experimenting with the new capabilities of brushes in Photoshop CS5 and I'm having problems with the brush response being abysmally slow.  I'm working on a Mac Pro Quad Core, 2.93 GHz with 8 MB of RAM and a wrireless mouse.  Can anybody tell me what might be contributing to this slowness??
    Herman R.

I've installed the 12 02 update and the latest drivers for the
FX3400 graphics card. Now when CS5 opens it tells me its disabling theGPU enhancements. I have the GL turned off.
It also likes to crash when I run Imagenomics plug ins.
So CS3 did not use GL? Whatever.   So that means that its slow  and crashes now.  I can see in other threads here and elsewhere the retarded brush action is common.   They released CS5 too soon. Its not even half-baked.  Also I want the images to open on the right monitor but with CS5 I have to drag each image over to work on it.
I'm back to using CS3 and they said my refund will be credited to my card the first week of January.  I'll have to monitor to see if they get their application working before I return as I have wasted so much time with this I think they should pay me for helping with their product development.

  • Photoshop CS6 - Very Slow Brush Speeds...

    Hi:
I thought CS5 was bad, but brushing with CS6 all brush strokes are very, very slow. If I make a brush stoke I have literally have to put my hand on my chin and wait for the brush to catch up. I cannot work like this. Any suggestions on what to do to speed up the brushes? Forget about adding anything else to Photoshop, please work on speeding up exisiting functions.

  • MacPro  Running Super slow with Photoshop CS5

My MacPro is running extremely slow with Adobe Photoshop CS5. I have tried uppping the ram usage to over 14 gigs of ram and its still even slower than my macbook pro. the healing brush is the slowest, but even layer masking seems to lag a lot. how can I fix this?

There are dozens of threads, faq, guides, tips on how to configure a Mac especially for CS5. Best places to start.

    Scratch drive or array
    Disable Spotlight on scratch
Move your files to scratch for work and then save as you go and move back to media drive when done
fast system drives. maybe even SSD if you can, or 10K 600GB VR
Upping RAM helps if you work with large images, layers, etc (in some cases 16 or 24 or 32GB, and if you can run in 64-bit mode get a little better).

  • How to get tapered brushes in cs5 photoshop

    Hi,
I have cs5 photoshop and it seems to have a very limited amount of brush styles. Other people with cs5 have a large range of standard styles. I am just after the standard tapered end brush (tapered on both ends)
    Cheers

Go to Window>Brush, click on the words Shape Dynamics and then select Pen Pressure for the Control under Size Jitter.
In the Paths panel (Window>Paths), right click on the path and select Stroke Path.
In the Stroke Path dialog check Simulate Pressure.

  • Problem With Brushes Pressure CS5

    Hello all.
I'm using a Photoshop Cs5 with a Wacom Cintiq 12wx Tablet (I'm using PC with WinXP).
I'm having some problems withe the pressure, it doesn't work on Photoshop, (I tried it on CS3 & CS5), and I did clicked on the Tablet options in PS.
    The pressure just don't responds.
I Think its becuse I can't change the Minimum Diameter in any Brush.
Plus when I change the Control part to Pen Pressure, a little warning sign is appering ( a triangel with an exclamation mark insaid ), how ever when I click on it [to see what the problem is ,nothing happens].
I have to point out that in the Cintiq Tablet Properties it's all fine, the pressure respond(in the meter)
I tried making a different settings for Photoshop, it didn't help. Can any one Pleas help me?

Usually, this is an issue with the wacom driver needing to be updated.
A few people have also found that the Windows tablet settings can also mess things up.

  • 'Adjustment Brush' in CS5 Bridge

The adjustment brush in my CS5 Bridge is no longer working. Can some offer me a solution?

The adjustment brush in my CS5 Bridge is no longer working
This is a tool in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) and ACR is a plug in that works in both Photoshop and Bridge. If you choose to open a file by pointing at it in the Bridge content panel it opens in ACR using Photoshop.
If you choose to Open In Camera Raw it opens in ACR using Bridge.
So first test both options, but it is likely you will get a better answer in the dedicated Camera Raw forum.

  • Can't load tpl brush presets (CS5, Mac OSX 10.5)

    Hi all,
I'm using Photshop CS5.1 on my Mac (OSX 10.5.8) and don't seem to be able to load tpl files.
I put the file in Photoshop's "presets -> tools" folder and tried to open it via the brush presets picker. When I browse for the file, only ABR files are shown, TPLs are greyed out.
Any idea why this could be and what I could do to make the preset work?
    Thanks a lot in advance!

Open them in the tool presets picker, the preset manager, double click them, or drag them to the application icon.

  • Very slow scrolling with CS5

I don't know if other people also have this problem, but I noticed an issue which makes Photoshop CS5 completely useless for me: It is scrolling incredibly slow. With CS4 I am able to scroll much faster and with different speeds. In CS5 it seems like the speed is limited. No matter how much I scroll with my mouse, Photoshop keeps scrolling at the same speed.
It seems like it is not only me: The only website concerning this problem I was able to find is:
    http://macperformanceguide.com/OptimizingPhotoshopCS5-Issues.html
Unacceptable scrolling speed with center button
I use the scroll wheel in the center of the Apple mouse constantly. In CS5, this functionality is now broken, because CS5 scrolls only a small amount, very different from CS4. There is no apparent work-around.
    Reader Joe N agrees:
I saw your posting about CS5 issues, and I want to add another STRONG vote for the Photoshop mouse wheel scrolling speed issue. I use a Magic Mouse, and the scrolling speed is so poor in PS CS5 that it is totally blocking my creative flow. I have scoured the web for a solution and have not found anything yet...
I also use a Magic Mouse and a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. Is there any hope of a fix or a workaround?

Thanks so much for replying, Chris. I've just started using CS5 and only used CS4 for a couple of weeks. There are so many variables. and I don't think it's just Photoshop. I'm wondering if the same problems happen in windows 7 (I switched to the Mac the last time I bought a computer.) Probably it's just that everything gets more complicated along with the improvements. : -(
    Thanks again,
    Peggy

  • How do you load brushes in CS5?

I have jumped from CS2 to CS5. I am using Windows with the Vista operating system.
I can't seem to load brushes.  I have loaded the .abr files in the Adobe>Adobe PhotoshopCs5>Presets>Brushes folder.
When I go to load brushes none (including the preset) of the brushes are are in the window. It says" the folder is empty."  The brushes are listed at the bottom of the brush menu but there are no thumbnails of them under the brush presets.
How do I get them loaded?

You are correct, after hours of playing with this last night I finally figured it out too.  I can't remember the original default path, but I navigated to the folder I had put the brushes into, and they were there. I was able to load them successfully.
I think this is a problem for a lot of people.  I was checking on the web for the answer before I tried Adobe customer service.   The unanswered brush queston is all over the place!!
    Thanks for your help.

  • Problems with "history brush" in CS5.1

I have somehow have activated the history brush in Photoshop CS5.1  Now it appears in all of my files in the history box and I don't know how to de-activate it.  Is there some trick?  Did it get stuck there because I took a snapshot of something?  I tried to re-set preferences and it is still there.  I am thinking about uninstalling Photoshop but would really like someone to help me turn off the history brush.

  • New Roto Brush in CS5. Worth the upgrade?

I'm sure everyone by now has seen presentations of the new AE CS5. Besides native support for 64-bit platforms, they introduced a very appealing feature called Roto Brush. Besides Adobe employees telling "how great it is", did anyone outside Adobe try it? What do you think, is it really that intuitive? And, is it worth $300 for an upgrade?

As for my previous claim about Ps being on the forefront of Adobe's innovations, then take a look, there are so many things that Ps has that AE doesn't, for instance: range of (handy) selection tools, or cloning brushes, or layer grouping would be just a few off the top of my head. So, no offense, but Ps is way ahead of AE in that sense. (Again I understand that I cannot compare two side by side, since they both work with different media. I'm simply pointing out those nifty tools that Ps has, that would be very nice to have in AE.)
So is it just me, or anyone else feels the same?
I think you are getting yourself to worked up over this and not considering many quite specific things. Software engineering is a complex process (which you as a programmer should know) and doesn't mean just linking a few source files and compiling them. There are different APIs at work here and just the addition of time as a concept complicates matters a bazillion times. Or do you think PS selection tools would be of any use if the only produced jittery output because they did no temporal smoothing? Equally, "Groups" can mean a whole lot of differnt things and adding such a feature will have to be carefully weighed against things like rendering order and the whole concept of how AE structures projects. Would groups be just a meta structure to bundle existing property streams? A whole new way of working? Eliminate pre-comping? Please think about this. Blnaket statements as to one program being behind another are neither fair nor are the in any way correct after the fact. and last but not least, do not forget the human resource factor: Only so many people are working on any given program. Compared to a flagship app like Photoshop that keeps 300 people busy, AE with its 50 people (just do an Alt+click on the About to get a list), of which only a part are the actual programmers, has much less resources and I think it's still amazing, that they can manage to maintain the app on 2 platforms and handle of a bazillion media formats. Yes, AE has its flaws, but it's not that you cannot get anything done with it, is it? I also find such discussions insincere in that you are free to choose your tools and if you are unhappy with AE, you can always try Nuke, Fusion, toxik* or whatever.... Nobody is forcing you to work with Adobe programs.

  • Slow brushes in windows 7 64bit

    Hi.
I have photoshop CS5 installed in two machines as we are allowed. One in windows 7 32bit and the other on a 64bit.  On the 32bit machine the brushes work flawlessly but on the 64bit they lag. Now, my photoshop CS3 on the same 64bit machine works fine! The problem is with CS5. I've read a few different posts on this but nobody seems to have an answer. Has adobe come up with anything to solve this problem?
    Thanks.

My first suspicions always fall on the display driver implementation for the particular system...
Have you tried going into Edit - Preferences - Performance, disabling OpenGL drawing, then restarting Photoshop?  This makes Photoshop use functions for display more like what the older versions used (i.e., GDI instead of OpenGL).
If this makes a big difference, then look to the web site of the maker of the video card for an updated driver.  A new video card isn't out of the question if their latest doesn't work very well.
