Slow Brushes In Photoshop CS5

Hi:
I've just started experimenting with the new capabilities of brushes in Photoshop CS5 and I'm having problems with the brush response being abysmally slow.  I'm working on a Mac Pro Quad Core, 2.93 GHz with 8 MB of RAM and a wrireless mouse.  Can anybody tell me what might be contributing to this slowness??
Herman R.

I've installed the 12 02 update and the latest drivers for the
FX3400 graphics card. Now when CS5 opens it tells me its disabling theGPU enhancements. I have the GL turned off.
It also likes to crash when I run Imagenomics plug ins.
So CS3 did not use GL? Whatever.   So that means that its slow  and crashes now.  I can see in other threads here and elsewhere the retarded brush action is common.   They released CS5 too soon. Its not even half-baked.  Also I want the images to open on the right monitor but with CS5 I have to drag each image over to work on it.
I'm back to using CS3 and they said my refund will be credited to my card the first week of January.  I'll have to monitor to see if they get their application working before I return as I have wasted so much time with this I think they should pay me for helping with their product development.

  • Install brushes in Photoshop CS5.1

    Hi
I am attempting to install these brushes to Photoshop CS 5.1
I have previously used them in Photoshop CS4 64 Bit Extended
I went through the same process - put the ABR file into Presets>Brushes but the brushes do not appear in Photoshop even when the computer has been restarted.
Am I doing something wrong, or are the brushes incompatible with the new Photoshop?
    Thanks

I don't think just dropping brushes in a folder is the preferred way to load them.
Have you tried clicking the fly-out menu and choosing Load Brushes?

  • Brush in Photoshop CS5 becomes unintentional rainbow...

    Here is a screenshot:
I would like the color to change between the foreground and the background while painting, but this is happening.
-How do I fix this, and is there a name for it?

Sorry, I guess both Mylenium and I misread your original post...  I thought you were trying to stop it from jittering between different colors.
I'm still not completely clear on what you're trying to accomplish...  You want a brush that paints red and green randomly?
    Is this what you want?

  • MacPro  Running Super slow with Photoshop CS5

My MacPro is running extremely slow with Adobe Photoshop CS5. I have tried uppping the ram usage to over 14 gigs of ram and its still even slower than my macbook pro. the healing brush is the slowest, but even layer masking seems to lag a lot. how can I fix this?

There are dozens of threads, faq, guides, tips on how to configure a Mac especially for CS5. Best places to start.

    Scratch drive or array
    Disable Spotlight on scratch
Move your files to scratch for work and then save as you go and move back to media drive when done
fast system drives. maybe even SSD if you can, or 10K 600GB VR
Upping RAM helps if you work with large images, layers, etc (in some cases 16 or 24 or 32GB, and if you can run in 64-bit mode get a little better).
    Some specs on the setup?

  • Buggy Brush Behavior in Photoshop CS5 / Lion

I have a problem that has suddenly appeared in Photoshop CS5 (current version 12.0.4). Using it on a recent MacBook Pro.
I am running this under Lion, and have been doing so ever since I installed the new system (about a week or two after Lion was released).  Until yesterday, no problems at all.
The problem is with the brush tool.
    I open a new document.
Click on Brush Tool icon (or hit "B" key).
Move my cursor to the document.  The cursor DOES NOT show the outline of the current brush as it should.  Instead, it shows the Move arrow.
    I click on the Trackpad.
The brush paints according to the brush style selected. That, at least, is as it should be (despite the appearance of the wrong cursor)
But I then click on the Brush tool again.... and, this is the weird part. The brush "paints" another dot - kind of next to where the icon is in the toolbox.
Then, WHEREVER I click, I get another brush dot in the document.  Even if I click any of the other tools in the toolbox, each click gives me another dot from the brush.
This makes using CS5 virtually impossible.  CS3 works as it should.
    Any ideas on fixing this.
    Thanks.
    D. Rehr

I also have experienced very erratic and odd behaviour with the brushes in Photoshop CS5.1 (version 12.1) under Lion 10.7.2.
For example, sometimes I am clicking in the toolbox (on the left of the canvas) and the brush is making strokes on the canvas! Unbelievable...
Other odd behaviors include when I am changing the size of the brush with the bracket keys. Sometimes the circle disappears completely, only to come back once I bump up to another size (actually, it is usually a range of sizes that don't work, but it works normally above or below that range. Haven't pinned down the range though.)
Another thing that happens is when I am changing the size of the brush with the bracket keys, the circle around the brush area jumps up to the left, then back to where I had placed it, again, only for a certain range of sizes. The circle itself also disappears at times.
Sometimes ditching the Photoshop preference file appears to work for me, but the problem just comes back again (and I hate resetting all of my preferences for no reason!).
I have tried restarting Photoshop, restarting my Mac, zapping PRAM, and resetting the SMC, all to no avail!
    Please help (Apple, Adobe)!!!
Anybody have any other ideas, fixes?

  • Photoshop CS5 Very Slow Liquify

I've noticed that in Photoshop CS5, Liquify just works terribly slowly. When I click and drag to distort an image, the image gets distorted sometimes even 10 seconds after I've lifted my hand. Sometimes I have to wait 30-40 seconds for the distortions to happen before I can regain control of Photoshop.
Also, panning is a bit more choppy than in CS4, which annoys me a lot, as it was the case with CS4 compared to CS3, etc... I predict that panning in CS7 will look like a slideshow.
And another thing, when you Flick-Pan, and release the mouse, the canvas flies across the screen, and during that flying animation, in CS4, you could still zoom in and out with the keyboard. In CS5, you have to wait until the canvas has slowed down to a stop to be able to zoom. This is also a strange feature.
Adobe said CS5 will have performance improvements, and I can see filters, adjustments and brushes perform a tiny bit better, but basic things like panning, zooming and liquify got MUCH worse and less responsive, and this is not worth the tradeoff for me, since I use these features very frequently, many times a second.
I use a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet most of the time, and I noticed that Liquify is much faster (although still too slow for me to use it) when I use my trackpad instead of the pen.
I'm using the Photoshop CS5 trial now, and I have Photoshop CS3 and CS4 both installed on the same computer, so I can tell that CS3 ran much faster, CS4 was a bit slower and CS5 is a LOT slower. I'm using a late 2008 15 inch Unibody MacBook Pro with 9600M / 9400M graphics, 4GB RAM and 2.53 GHz CPU, and speed gets a bit better when using the 9600M.
    Here are my questions:
Has anyone else had any of these problems, especially Liquify?
Has anyone else used CS5 and noticed that Liquify runs just fine?
Does anyone have any suggestions of what I could try to cure any of these problems?
Is it possible that this is the way Photoshop CS5 should run on my computer, due to my hardware limitations and bloated software?

How long is it going to take to fix this liquify problem?? Come one guys I need it to work now and better than in CS4 not worse!!! Otherwise why did I spend almost 1K to upgrade???
Looking into the problem isn't enough!!! I need a solution since I use the liquify tool for almost 99.9% of my images (fashion/beauty photography retouching).
Is there a temporary fix??? using the CS4 liquify plugin into the CS5 software?????
do  a google search on slow liquify and see what comes up..... still pretty nice and insecure requests for the reason why it is so slow because users think it is their machine (computer) but if I don't get an answer and fi very soon (couple of days at the most) this nice and insecurity will vanish for a HUGE ADOBE *** kicking campaign !!! Since photoshop is known for their arrogantly slow updates for their software and waits till the next big update to correct things....I am not going to wait 18 months for you guys to fix the liquify problem!!!
SO GET TO IT NOW!!!!! So I can do my work and make enough money to keep spending on adobe upgrades!
And as a side note...didn't you "wizzards" have enough time to discover this BIG problem beforehand?? Or were you to busy fighting with Apple about your huge Flash problem??

  • Slow photoshop cs5, mac os x

    Hello.
My photoshop CS5 is not working well recently. It is extremely slow, so slow It is not possible to work on. I have all the Design Premium, and photoshop is the only one making this problem. I uninstall all the CS5 Design Premium from my computer (via adobe uninstaller) and reinstall it, but the same problem still occurred.
I work on Mac OS X Mountain Lion operating system.
I wold like you to help me solve this problem.

  • How to disable anoying and slow stamp brush preview? CS5

    Hello,
i have this problem in Photoshop CS5
as always, with nev version we got new features which nobody needs and slow down the performance... and/or workflow
for example: anoying preview under the stamp brush, which is unbelievably slow and cannot be turned off
next thing is brush shape preview, i often use large brushes and i need to see the whole shape, not just one quarter of the brush, please change that
    thanx

If not for the new features, why upgrade Photoshop?
You have video driver problems.  You are also likely wrong that OpenGL Drawing is turned off on your system, assuming by "stamp brush preview" you mean  the overlay preview inside the brush for the Clone Stamp tool, because with OpenGL disabled you wouldn't be seeing that overlay.  Keep in mind that when you make OpenGL changes in the Edit - Preferences - Performance menu you should close Photoshop and reopen it.
Why do things work differently in CS5?  The simple answer is that Photoshop demands more of the video drivers than its predecessors.  And your computer / software setup isn't up to the task.
Chances are it can work better...  Download the latest driver for your nVidia video card.  http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
By the way, the Clone Stamp overlay (assuming that's what you're describing as the "stamp brush preview") is not "unbelievably slow" on most peoples' systems - it's perfectly interactive and a real help.  To turn off the Clone Stamp overlay, choose Window - Clone Source, then uncheck the [ ] Show Overlay setting.

  • Photoshop CS5 very slow performance, MacBook Pro i7

Hi, I've noticed some posts on slow screen redraw, but my issue seems to be with specific performance with web based files having many layers and layer groups.
A sample file is a 27mb psd. It has lot of layers (525), mostly type layers (limited to 3-4 typefaces in the file) and layer groups. If I select a particularly large layer group and try to move it on the canvas, I get the Adobe throbber cursor icon for at least 20 seconds. Even small layer groups bring up the throbber cursor for a few seconds. Overall, things seem much slower than CS4. Not good! And I'm just speaking of basic operations, not hitting intensive tools or major filters yet.
I've looked at the site below, but not much information except the option to purchase some scripts to 'warm-up' Photoshop. After what I spent on Design Premium, I don't think I should have to purchase third party scripts to warm it up. (I did experiment with the tiles option under performance pref's, but upping that made opening files take 2 minutes, where before opening was achieved in 10-15 seconds.
    http://macperformanceguide.com/index_topics.html#OptimizingPhotoshopCS5
I have a brand new MacBook Pro i7, 8GB, 7200 internal drive. I installed everything from a fresh install of Snow Leopard. CS4 has never been installed on this Mac.
    Any thoughts?

if you have 4GB RAM, the system would need about 1-2GB,
so if you quit all other apps and only run PS, it has 2-3GB RAM left.
you can set RAM-usage in percentage, in the settings menu of photoshop,
i set it to 70%, the rest is for osx.
so lets say PS uses 2GB RAM in your case, the more hires images you open at once and the more layers they have,
and the bigger they are, the 2GB RAM are gone and PS will use the scratch disc for the mentioned images you opened at once, which is also configured in the settings menu. usage of a scratch disc (PS writes data to the scratch disc permanently) will slow down overall performance, it may lagg and everything is slower than before (in my experience). best for scratch disc usage is a separate, fast, internal disc, as huge as possible (50-250GB discsize and empty, no files on it, so that PS can write continously, in order to avoid disc-fragmentation, which would slow down the writing process additionally)
thats the reason i would add 8GB RAM.
RAM is very important for photoshop CS5.
(also processor clock speed and number of cores - in the moment 2 cores are enough
as CS5 isnt optimized yet for more than 4 or 6 cores. more to come soon, i hope...
in my case, i added 24GB RAM, cause i want to avoid usage of a scratch disc at all. this is a huge gain of performance for myself.
i never liked my old scratch disc, as working was terrible slow with it. i also had only 4GB RAM in my last mac, and working was no fun
i work on large format files, 50-100cm at 300dpi and lots of layers, each layer has to be seen like an image itself, so each layer rises RAM consumption.
its a pitty that i never saw adobe delivering some kind of performance guide for photoshop, how to improve performance for professional users, like posting that guide on their main photoshop site, i had to digg for these informations for a long period of time and found it in the end at diglloyd´s comprehensive site. i wonder why adobe makes a secret about photoshop performance, a lot of my friends at work mentioned formerly, that they have had huge lag issues and dont know where to begin solving these problems, which are solvable for sure.... (new hardware, proper settings and so on)
you can read detailed instructions, on how to speed up things in PS here: (where i took it for myself)

  • Photoshop CS5 Spot Healing Brush only blurs

Here's a before and after shot.  I recently upgraded from CS3 and the spot healing brush always worked great.
Now when I use it, whether or not I use content aware fill, it leaves a blurred residue of what I was trying to remove.
As an aside, the Content Aware Fill leaves a similar residue, enough to make it effectively unusable.
I have included a sample photo of the spot healing brush problem.  Left side is before and right side is after.
I just wanted to get rid of the electrical wall socket.  You can see that it's not working.  I am running windows 8 in a 64-bit environtment and running the 64-bit version of Photoshop CS5.5
Any assitance anyone is able to afford me is greatly appreciated.

In my opinion, there's nothing wrong with your choice of Spot Healing Brush for this image. I cropped your screenshot to the "BEFORE" image, removed the "BEFORE" type (with the SHB) and scaled to 600% to match your original document.
A dab of a 0% hardness 500 pixel Spot Healing Brush in Ps CS5.1 on OS X 10.6.8 worked perfectly. However, I would have made a vertical stroke with the brush at about 80% hardness and about 200 pixels, which also works for me.
Maybe your SHB is working in "Create Texture" mode despite specifying "Proximity Match" in Options bar. Try resetting the SHB by right-clicking its icon at left of Options bar and picking "Reset Tool" from the menu that appears.

  • Adobe Photoshop CS5 (Windows 7) Lagging Brushes & Tools

    What I'm Using:
    - Toshiba F60 Qosmio Laptop w/ Windows 7
    - Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 bit)
    Hey Everyone,
I'm having an issue with my new Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 bit) installed on my Brand new Laptop (Toshiba F60 Qosmio). Basically I have optimized via the Edit > Preferences > Performance menu in Photoshop CS5 but Im still having major issues with my Brushes, Patch, etc. Tools lagging while using them. When you enable the tool and use it, it will be atleast 0.5 - 1.0 Seconds behind the movement of the cursor. My Laptop is brand new and fully optimized for graphic design and seems to run every other application seamless. Adobe Photoshop launches quick and smoothly but once using the tools it has the same lag time.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? Its driving me nuts and really cutting into my work schedule.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Darren

    Hi Chris,
I will definitely give that a try. I had a tech set up my computer after i purchased it less than a week ago but it is a possibility that he missed it. I will try and run an update this weekend and see if that increases the speed when OpenGL is enabled. I will get back to you on the issue in the next few days.
Thanks for your insight and helpful suggestion.
    Much appreciated.
    -Darren

  • Brush and Pencil tool not working in Photoshop CS5 trial

I dowloaded the Photoshop CS5 trial yesterday 2 days ago. Everything worked perfectly yesterday. Unfortunately, today...the brush and pencil tool doesn't work. Anyone have any idea why?

We need a few more details like what doesn't work
with the brush or pencil tools.
Provide a screenshot if you feel that would help illustrate the problem.

  • In photoshop CS5, Brush tool doesn't work on an adjustment layer

In photoshop CS5, Brush tool doesn't work on an adjustment layer

I Created an adjustment (Curves) layer and did the curves adjustment.  Then I did an Edit Fill (Normal Mode, 100% Opacity and Use: Black).
I then try to use the brush tool, but it doesn't work.  I've done this hundreds of times before and suddenly it's not working.  Rebooted the system, but that didn't help.
I know how to do a screen shot, but it doesn't paste onto this screen.  How do I get that to you?
    thanks for your help

  • Are the brushes in Photoshop CC faster than CS6 - still need to use CS5 for large files

    Hey,
Are the brushes in Photoshop CC any faster than Photoshop CS6.
Here's my standard large file, which makes the CS6 brushes crawl:
    iPad 3 size - 2048 x 1536
    About 20-100 layers
A combination of vector and bitmap layers
Many of the layers use layer styles
On a file like this there is a hesitation to every brush stroke in CS6. Even a basic round brush has the same hesitation, it doesn't have to be a brush as elaborate as a mixer brush.
This hesitation happens on both the mac and pc, on systems with 16 gb of ram. Many of my coworkers have the same issue.
So, for a complicated file, such as a map with many parts, I ask my coworkers to please work in CS5. If they work in CS6 I ask them to not use any CS6 only features, such as group layer styles. The only reason why one of them might want to use CS6 is because they're working on only a small portion of the map, such as a building. The rest of the layers are flattened in their file.
Just wondering if there has ever been a resolution to this problem...or this is just the way it is.
    Thanks for your help!

If you give complete and detailed information about your setup and the issue at hand,
such as your platform (Mac or Win),
exact versions of your OS, of Photoshop (not just "CS6", but something like CS6v.13.0.6) and of Bridge,
your settings in Photoshop > Preference > Performance
the type of file you were working on,
machine specs, such as total installed RAM, scratch file HDs, total available HD space, video card specs, including total VRAM installed,
what troubleshooting steps you have taken so far,
    what error message(s) you receive,
if having issues opening raw files also the exact camera make and model that generated them,
if you're having printing issues, indicate the exact make and model of your printer, paper size, image dimensions in pixels (so many pixels wide by so many pixels high). if going through a RIP, specify that too.
    etc.,
someone may be able to help you (not necessarily this poster, who is not a Windows user).
a screen shot of your settings or of the image could be very helpful too.

  • PhotoShop Cs5 to Cs3 Brush issue

    Hello.
Previously I was using PhotoShop CS5 for my personal art design, however i had to switch back to CS3 for various reasons. Having devoted a lot of time and care into my CS5, I saved up my
swatches, styles, brushes, etc..... so I wouldn't lose all my work. I spaced, however, and saved the CS5 brushes with the rest of my generic brushes in the process of a mass save. I no longer have access to CS5, and when I attempt to load the .abr into my CS3, it gives an error.
"Could not load the brushes "D:\etc\etc\etc\Brush Set 1.abr" because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop."
Is there anyway to get in there and delete those specific brushes, recover the ones I'm after......or.....anything?
    Thanks

Call Customer Service. You will need Photoshop CS3 media as a start as Adobe no longer provides media for older versions.
