Slow Burn

I came across the Adobe Forums in a Google search concerning how to
burn a disc using Adobe Premiere Pro CS4 (or "transcoding and building"
as I found that Adobe prefers to call it). After finding two very
convoluted methods to accomplish that task, I then wanted to know "why
does it take so long?". I found the post by the guy who was trying to
find out why it was taking him "two days" to transcode Blue-ray h.264 High Def. I'm
not having that extreme of a problem, but as I mentioned in a previous
post, I'm trying to put together an editing system for a local
governments' broadcasts. I'm under a deadline and I noticed that the
transcoding process on our system was taking place at slower than real time,
and this would not be acceptable. I cannot spend between two and three
hours to burn an hour and a half Council meeting to disc. Also, as I
found with another editing program, the file, at the end of the process
will probably be too large to fit on a DVD. Is there a solution to
these two problems?

  • SuperDrive slow burning solution

Hi all. After days of researching and blog hunting, I finally realized that Apple's got an online iMac G5 webchat help (DUH) (http://www.apple.com/support/imac/) and that the technicians are working on this slow burning problem.
Apparently when you upgrade (archive and transfer user data) to a new OS (ie: Panther to Tiger) some of the files in the main Preference folder becomes corrupted, because if you create a new user and restart your computer under that new user and run Disk Utility, you will find that your SuperDrive's maximum burn speeds are restored. So Apple has assertained that the slow burn is a software issue, not hardware.
So what Apple got me to do was to reboot my computer back under the original user account name, then go to the Library folder and take out the original Preferences folder (./Library/Preferences) and place it on your desktop..DON'T TRASH IT. Then restart your computer. Once rebooted, launch Disk Utility and try to burn something with both DVD and CD mediums, and you'll see that their burning speeds will be restored to factory specs (in my case it would be 4X DVD and 16X CD). Quit out of Disk Utility. Drag all the contents of the original Preference folder on your desktop into the newly created Preference folder (./Library/Preference) WITHOUT REPLACING THE NEW FILES. Restart, and everything seems to be fine. Hope this helps.

Having visited the stationary store and paid exhorbitent prices, I have had success with 8x verbatim DVD+R and 8x TDK DVD-R burning at the 4x that my drive is supposed to be capable of. However highly reputeable Imation 8x discs will only go to 2x. As I understand it (I may be wrong so don't quote me on this!) but i think the problem that I am experiencing is that the firmware in my drive does not recognise many brands of disc and so defaults to 2x. If this is the case, there should be a firmware update which has more media added to the list. I understand pioneer do this but Matshita pass the responsibility on to apple. Let's hope there's an update!!!
My order of 50 Imations hasn't shipped yet so hopefully can be changed to verbatim and also on the bright side, my iMac G5 was supposed to be -R, -rw only but it does +R & +RW as well. Go to terminal and type "drutil info" and it is listed there but system profiler only says -r, -rw. I have successfully used +rw discs! So it's not all bad but would have been more convenient had I known which media to use. I have just carried out an actual burn and it took 14mins +lead in/out for a 3.9GB TDK disc. Definitley faster than the 25mins it was taking with the Imations!
My recommendation: For iMac G5 with UJ-825, I haven't tried Apple discs but they really should work. My tests show that Verbatim & TDK go at the right speed whilst Princo and Imation do not.

  • SLOW burning

I've never had this problem before the last two or three itunes updates, but recently i have had a really hard time burning cd's. In the past the burn time was amazingly fast, but now it's so absurdly slow that i can't even stand to wait. It takes about ten min. just to initialize the burning. And this is with no other applications running.
Does anyone else have this problem?
    Help? Please?

Hi all here is test for you all that will determine if it is your files or sometiing else that is causing your slow burn problems... OS X maintains the integrity of files it deals with by checking ownership and permissions before, during and after ... this checking is of no consequence when no problems exist, however not so if files are found locked, wrong ownerships and/or permissions are set... the system will resolve these issues, in due course, most times but it takes time...
The test: check how long it takes to burn two CD's with the setup the way it is...
Then burn the same two CD's after 1st setting all permissions and ownerships correctly and then compare the two times...
Use BatChmod to set correct permissions on your home ~ Music folder
This compact GUI will perform the same tasks as a 'terminal command line'
drag the complete Music folder with libraries and iTunes Music folder inside to the BatChmod Icon and drop....
check path is correct.... tick if not already.... Owner=R W X, Group=R, Others=R,
then tick 'Apply ownership and privileges' tick 'Unlock" ... click Apply...
provide password... all done very quick...
Let's know how you get on ... Take care ... TP

  • Extremely slow burning w/external firewire dvd burner

Received replacement refurb dvd drive from LaCie. Burning is extremely slow. Tried unit on another G4 Dual 867MHz RAM 768 MB and unit runs properly. Second unit has no peripherals. Disconnecting everything from original G4 gives very slight improvement in burn speed. LaCie tech has no ideas.
    Anybody got a thought?

Hmmm, I have a Smsung much like that in my G5...

  • DVD share fails with error message suggesting slower burn rate.

Can't figure out how to change the burn rate to a slower speed. Anyone know? It also suggests changing DVD brands but Verbatims are good and I doubt that's the real problem.  (Mac OS 10.9.1--it's not updating down below.)

Another option you might consider is creating a disk image (output device = hard drive) and burn the disk in Disk Utility. You should be able to choose a burn rate there.

  • Slow burn vs Fast burn (which is better quality) fact or fiction

Ok again I would like to know the official answer to this question because from the response last time, I'm not really confidence with the answer.
IS IT FACT THAT IF YOU USE WAV BURNER AND BURN AT A SLOWER SPEED COMPARED TO FASTER SPEED THE QUALITY BECOMES BETTER BY PROOF?
    IF THIS FACT OR FICTION.
SOMEONE PLEASE PROVIDE SOME LONG YEARS EXPERIENCE PROOF.

Sorry, can't wait until someone clocks what I've said, 'cos I might be going out soon, so thought I'd write it up first...
The difference between the HHB and the Mac burner is... nothing much. The actual tray and laser workings are probably the same in both units. The extra dosh for the HHB covers the casing, functionality and the convertors - it's basically a hardware version of WaveBurner, and we all know hardware versions cost more than software versions.
Therefore, in my alleged test there should only be one of the four that shows any difference, and that's the real time recording via analogue. The other three, all remaining in the digital domain, irrespective of speed, should give the same results, because data is encoded in the same way, no matter how you do it. It would be interesting to see if there is any difference, but I doubt the equipment I've got would be sensitive enough to monitor it (or would allow me to zoom in and see the difference enough to post here). With that in mind, the human ear isn't going to hear it.
The only REAL difference the speed option gives you is reliability of burning. The faster you get, the more prone it is of making an error in the burning process, but this can sometimes come down to the quality of the disc itself. Not all discs are the same, as I guess most people have realised to their horror at some point (data).
Just a final note. I'm working with a voice-over artist for TV and radio, and the stations are happy to receive the files as MP3's via email. Who'd have thought that would happen when MP3 came out?!? Just goes to show people are putting a perspective on the quality standard for final use. But I'm still sending AIFF files though, MP3 makes me shudder as an original! And here we are worrying about CD quality...

  • IDVD slow burn time?

Hi people, just been playing with idvd and have tried burning to a dvd but it seems just a bit slow. The imported movie file is a widescreen MP4 at 699.5 mb with a running time of 1 hour 49 mins. When I bring it into idvd it tells me to change the project info so that it fit's to a dvd. I do this, putting it on the highest quality setting (professional), The other settings are Pal format and widescreen. When it burns it first encodes all the menus, then the film. The last time I tried this it took upwards of 8 hours. I ended up quitting the process. My mac is a brand new mac pro 2 x 2.8 quad core with 2gb ram and atleast 180 gigs of hard drive free. It came with leopard and I have run all the software updates available. All I want to know is if this time scale sounds about right - if it is then cool, it just seemed a bit slow to me.

That sounds a little long for a 109 minute movie. This Macworld article lists a 2 hr project encoded and burned in 3hrs 52 min on a 20" iMac.
The professional quality setting does two passes, one to examine the media to determine which parts can withstand the greatest compression, still or very slow moving parts of the movie, and which cannot, fast panning or action. The second pass then does the encoding.
Instead of burning directly to disk use the File->Save as Disk Image menu option. That separates the encoding from the burning. Once the disk image is created you can play it with DVD player to check out the encoding (and for typos-my biggest issue ). Once your satisfied the disk plays OK on your Mac burn it with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available. Also use good media. Verbatim-R is the most recommended brand here.

  • Slow Burn/Importing Speeds in ITUNES

I am using the most current version of Itunes (updated 11/17/09). It takes longer to import a CD than it does to play it. The most common import/burn speed is less than .1! Usually it shows (.07x). Can't figure how to change the burn speed or speed up importing CD. In the past it used to be super fast and took no time at all. Help! What is wrong??? I have plenty of RAM and lots of storage space. Computer is recently updated and I use AVG.

Look in your iTunes Import settings. If "Error Correction" is turned on, turn it off.
If that does not help, try ripping a CD with another program on the same computer, such as Windows Media Player. If that is also slow, the problem is likely in your CD drive. On the other hand, if WMP rips satisfactorily, simply add the resulting MP3s to your iTunes library.

  • Slow Burning Movies to Blu-Ray with PE8

For several months, I've been converting a collection of old B & W movies from VHS tape to DVD using PE8. I've been burning to DVD-R and DVD+R DL and the process has gone quite well. To try to increase the number of movies/disc I recently installed an LG WH10LS30 Blu-ray burner in my Dell XPS420. This drive burns 3 AVI movie files(55.7 GB total) plus menus to a DVD+R DL 8X disc in 98 minutes which I find quite acceptable although I have no benchmark by which to judge. Burning a Blu-ray disc has turned out to be a totally different story. I have successfully burned 5 movie files(98.4 GB total) plus menus to a BD-RE 2X disc twice, using the same procedure as with DVD's, and it took about 16 hours each time - far longer than I ever would have expected!
The LG drive doesn't appear to be the culprit as I think the actual burning portion of the process took under an hour. It's the encoding/compiling time that's the killer. Lack of experience leaves me in a quandary as to whether my workflow needs overhauling for Blu-ray or my time expectations are too high(low). Hence I'd really appreciate some advice!
My workflow has been as follows:
    (1) Import each movie from VCR through my Sony DV camcorder to PE8 as AVI file, perform basic editing & resave file in AVI form;
    (2) Run Disk Cleanup, defrag HDD's, shut down other programs, non-essential processes & services, disable Internet & security software and set PE8 priority to High before proceeding;
    (3) Assemble multiple AVI files in PE8 timeline, add menu markers, create menus and burn disc using NTSC DolbyDVD preset for DVD & MPEG2 1440 x 1080i NTSCDolby(for testing) for Blu-ray.
My XPS420 has an Intel duo core E8500 processor @ 3.16 GHz, 4GB RAM, a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 240 video card with latest driver, and two 7200 RPM hard drives, each with its own page file. The 320 GB C drive holds the Vista Home Premium OS and programs. It is 53% full. The 640 GB D drive is dedicated to the video files and is 38% full.

If you're using Premiere Elements to burn our videos to BluRay, Donald, you're making a big mistake.
You've got standard definition movies but you're outputting a hi-def video format (BluRay) so you're essentially telling the program to triple the number of pixels. This won't make your movie look hi-def. It just adds pixels to your standard def (720x480) AVI, which will only results in a fuzzy, blown-out video. This is also why the process is taking so long.
So you're essentially taking two to three times as long to create a fuzzier movie. Which is not a good workflow.
I think I know what you're trying to do. It sounds like you're trying to take advantage of the fact that a BluRay holds over 5 times as much data as a DVD. But that only means you can fit 5 times as many movies on a disc if your video is DVD video. In Premiere Elements, the only option for outputting to a BluRay is a hi-def BluRay file.
Even if you use a third-party program to create the kind of hybrid you're trying to create, it probably won't do you much good. Most disc players wouldn't know what to do with DVD files on a BluRay disc -- so you'd probably only be able to play your disc on a computer.
I recommend keeping it simple. Put DVD video on a DVD and put BluRay video on a BluRay.

  • The slow burning issue

    Hi
Like a few other people here I am having issues with the DVD burner (Matshita UJ-846) in my new iMac (+iSight), at the moment the fastest I can get it to burn is at 4x (12-13 minutes for a full disk), using Verbatim 8x disks.
Is anyone burning at full speed? If so what media are you using and how long does an 8x burn take?
    Russell

Is there a reason you don't think LaCie should get his money or are you just offering a cost-saving alternative?
I was surprised when I used iDVD 5 with my LaCie drive connected. iDVD defaulted to the LaCie drive instead of the iMac's Superdrive and even supported DL burning. Also, a MacWorld comparison test this year rated the LaCie drive as the fastest. My LaCie drive shows 16X burn support on my 8X Maxell media. It's not just a DVD drive and a Firewire case: it is also the drive's firmware and device profile.
I do support your recommendation to get a Firewire case and bare drive as a way to save money. It should out-perform the Superdrive and firmware updates likely will be offered more often than any such updates from Apple.

  • Slow burn with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E

Burning of 3.54 GB took over 12 minutes with MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E. Finder allows me to burn with 8X but still the actual speed is far from it. This is extremely disappointing. New firmware is needed or similar.

I have a power book 17 inch and cannot burn either, i get all kinds of window messages, too many to mention. one of the messages i do get sais i have not got the space on my start up disk ( there 2 gig left) but my file of 3.6 gig is on another partition.(with many gigs to spare) what doas my start up disk have to do with this i wonder. if i buy a third party burner its not going to ramble on about my start up disk is it?
Help me please how do i burn a DVD
My drive info says CDR-RW and DVD-RW
are these the disks i have open as options, this info is from the sytstem profiler. can i not use a DVD-R, why not?????
the answer to some of your question is use a DVD- MINUS not +PLUS
As for me help someone. isnt there anyone from apple who can give us some ideas about this.

  • Slow Burn Speed Since Updating to 5.0.1

Has anyone else noticed a weird change in burning speeds since updating to 5.0.1? It seems to have doubled the length of time that it takes for an nour long CD to burn (around 6 minutes).

I have just wasted eight CD's trying to burn a compilation. A message keeps coming up "Burn speed is too fast for the device or the media" and that I need to get into iTunes Preferences to adsjust the speed setting of burning. I've gone from52X down to 4X and APPARENTLY Mit's still too fast! This never happened before I updated to 5.0.1. I have no idea what's going on.

  • Slower Burn speed since iTunes 5.0.1

Was wondering if anyone else has experienced a change in their burn speed since upgrading to iTunes 5.0.1

    hi Samuel!
okay, we've got your CD diagnostics up, so skilled passers-by can comment. we'd better also work through some of the other usual suspects:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93360
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93286
... and these resources might also be helpful:

... and if no joy with that, head here to check for other documentation and to submit your CD diagnostics to Apple:

... but we also had some success (case-by-case basis) with 4000-range errors in 4.x when we tried the MS troubleshooting documents:

Having the same problem, since 7.7 and now 8. Have my library on an external hard drive and used to not have any problems. Took average of 5-6 minutes a CD, now 18 to 19 minutes. Could it be because of a problem with USB and my external? Seems like USB is causing a lot of problems in 8.
