Slow CD burning on iTunes

Hello!
I am using an old but perfectly happy Powermac G4 with OS X 10.3.9 and iTunes 7.2 (the latest that will run on my machine). I have also installed a Pioneer DVD DVR-112D internal optical drive and Patchburn, which works brilliantly with Finder burning (up to 42x) and until recently with iTunes too.
Lately, however, burning audio CDs from iTunes has slowed right down. According to the Console, iTunes requests 8x burning (no matter what is chosen in iTunes preferences) but only actually burns at 4x speed. Previously, iTunes would blast through an 80 minute CD in a couple of minutes at max speed; now it takes up to 20 minutes. I am using the same brand of CDs that I have always used, and I cannot see any reason for the sudden loss of speed...
Any help would be appreciated!
Cheers,
Dave

  • Slow CD Burn on iTunes Version 10.2.2 ???

I have been burning my music library to disc to save them in case I get another computer crash and lose my music again. I have a new HP (about 5 months old) and have been burning discs just fine. All of a sudden, the speed has been slowing down on the burning dramatically (which I burn from the iTunes program). I read quite a while back in Entertainment Weekly that iTunes only allows one to burn a finite amount of discs and then it slows down and finally stops all together. Is this true, and if so...why? Is that why I'm having a problem now, or is it something I can fix? Thank you in advance.

    hi guys,
apologies for hijacking this thread, but i am having similar problems with itunes on the pc.
    itunes burning slow.
i thought it might be my portable plug and play LG drive, but using that in conjunction with a 3rd party burning software app. and it is burning at normal speeds fine.
i also used the same drive with itunes on my mac and it still burns at the correct fast speeds rthat i used to be familiar with.
i have tried different media (hyundai and verbatim cd-r's) with itunes on the pc, no difference.
here is my diagnostic report. i hope someone can help:

I'm burning cd's to itunes on my PC and can't see the albums I've burned in itunes on my ipad or iphone, why?

I can see a extremely slow download of one at a time of the remaining songs.  Very disappointed in iTunes, should not take 24 hours to retrieve songs!!!

  • Audio CD burned from iTunes repetitively plays track 1

I burned several audio CD's from iTunes 7. When I play it on my home stereo and car stereo, it replays the first track endlessly unless I manually advance to the next song. I burned three CD's with the same result (changing the song intervals). Any ideas?? I think its kind of odd...

    I was using CD-R's, though I will try a CD-RW. Yes,
I definitely chose buring an audio CD (not MP3 etc).
I called Apple about it (iTunes support was entirely
unhelpful) and they hadn't heard of this problem
either. I'll post the CD-RW result. Thanks for
    your thoughts!
No, don't use CD-RW's for your test, use different CD-Rs, some cheaper cd-rs are notoriously flaky, or you might have a bad batch of good cd-rs. You might also try slowing your burning speed down and see if that helps.

Willy, the procdedure you describe works perfectly for AppleTV G1. In fact, I frequently play DTS music discs ripped to my iTunes library as Apple Lossless (ALAC) and synched to the ATV. What happens is that, as far as iTunes and the ATV are concerned, a conventional stereo 16/44 audio file is being played; however my reciever detects the DTS data stream, and instead of outputting static, it decodes the 5.1 channels correctly. This process parallels the way DTS discs were designed to be played back: a conventional CD player is connceted, via digital out, to a DTS-aware reciever/pre-amp and the two channels of static are recognized as 6 channels of DTS-encoded audio.
However this process will only work if the player (CD, ATV, PC, etc.) sends a "bit-perfect" 16 bit/44.1 khz data stream to the decoding device. In the case of ATV G2 and G3, as has been discussed elsewhere, the unit resmaples all audio - including 16/44 PCM (Redbook CD)  - to 16/48. While this is not a big deal for conventional audio CDs, MP3s, and AAC files, it mangles the fragile DTS datastream and renders it undecodable. The resulting static that you hear is just like the static you would hear if you played a DTS CD on a non-DTS capable system.
Sadly, I'm not aware of any easy way around this. You could use a program like Foobar (and the DTS plugin) to convert your DTS CDs to 6-ch .wav or .flac file. From there you could transcode the file to AC-3 and then mux it into a video container that ATV supports. You may need add a dummy video track, for iTunes/AppleTV to be ok with the file, though I'm not sure. This may be a lot of work.
Sorry for the bad news. I wish that the iTunes/ATV ecosystem had better multi-channel audio support.

  • I own an eMac. I really enjoy burning my iTunes playlists to a cd. But, now an error message pops up just after iTunes prepares the disc for burning. The message states this: The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred (-3). Any advice?

Hey everyone! So, here is my problem. I own an eMac. I enjoy burning my iTunes playlists to a CD. Any suggestions on how to correct this problen so I can continue burning my playlists???

  • HT201413 when i installed itunes in my old computer it would disable my CD burner and I was only able to burn through itunes. has this problem been resloved or will i have the same problem when i download it into my new computer?

When I installed itunes into my old computer (loaded with Windows Vista) it deleated my CD burner and would only allow me to burn via itunes - I had to go in to Best Buy to have them fis the problem but was told not to download new updates for itunes or it would do the same. with this fix I am not able to burn CDs from itunes which is a bummer.  If I download itunes onto my new  computer (loaded with Windows 7) is it going to do the same thing or has  this problem been resolved?

Copy them from your old computer, or your backuo copy of your old computer. to your new one.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  the exception is itunes purchases.

  • Very slow video downloading from iTunes

I have a FIOS 75Mbit connection (and get can 75Mbit on my N-router and Macbook Pro's WIFI).  But my new 1080p Apple TV is another matter. Two minute trailers take longer than 2 minutes to download. Half hour HD TV shows can take 90 minutes to download! And if I try to watch a movie I rented, Apple TV tells me it'll be ready to watch in "about 5 hours".
So my immediate reaction is ***. Any ideas why my wireless performance is so great with my MBP and so terrible with my AppleTV (just 10 feet away)

I stumbled across this thread looking for help with the same issue...slow to very slow movie downloads from iTunes.
Changing the DNS, both on my iMac as well as my Airport Extreme router helped.
I'm on Comcast and generally get around 33Mbps downloads via speedtest.net.  Based on several Namebench tests Google's Public DNS (8.8.8.8) has always been on top and I've always configured my router and Macs using the top 3 Namebench recommendations with Google at #1 position.  However while downloading movies from iTunes Activity Monitor showed very sharp "Data received/sec" rises and falls...anywhere from 4.40MB/sec to 100KB/sec or sometimes zero.  Most of the time it would start off well, but trail off to very poor and sporatic speeds after about 30 seconds.
Per finaleMile's and other's recommendations elsewhere I removed Google Public DNS from the settings on my router and iMac and things improved with respect to stability.  Although the "top speed" of about 4.40Mbps didn't improve, downloads did smooth out and remain between about 2.30Mbps to 4.10Mbps during the entire download.  Not speedy but a marked improvement in stability and overall download time.
    Thanks for the tip!
BTW, I've found that during regular web surfing, using Google's Public DNS is faster so I re-add it after downloading movies from iTunes.  It's a bit of a PIA, but worth it.  Wish there were a better option though.
FWIW I tend to download rented and purchased movies to iTunes on my iMac and then play them back via my Apple TV3 rather than "stream" them directly from iTunes.  That way if there are external network problems they won't have a negative impact on our viewing experience.

  • CDs burned from iTunes don't play in CD player.

This is a relatively new issue - I've never had this problem before. They appear to burn correctly. Sometimes the CD player will correctly identify the number of tracks but when I hit play the CDs just spin around without playing. Other times it the CD player will not recognize the CD at all. I thought it was the CD player but older CDs play fine. And it's not the CDs; I've tried two different brands. I think the problem is in the "initializing" phase which used to last for perhaps ten seconds and now lasts for perhaps two seconds before burning starts. Anybody else ever have this issue?

  • How do I export as in AIFF file with chapters to burn in iTunes?

I taped a round table discussion which is about an hour long. After editing in FCE, I need to make a CD of the discussion, ideally creating 12 five minute long songs. Is there a way to export an aiff file with chapters which I can then burn in iTunes as 12 separate songs? Please tell me I don't need to make and export 12 separate sequences.

Mark In and Out points in the timeline. Export. MArk new In and Out points and export again. Rpeat 10 more times.

  • Is it possible to burn my iTunes playlist to a SD card?

I cannot seem to transfer (burn) an iTunes playlist to a SD card. I eventually want my entire library on SD cards to free up space on my MacBook Pro and iPhone. My Jeep does not have a CD player. Just Bluetooth and SD card slot. So CD format is not an option.

You should be able to copy via drag and drop to the SD card - I don't have any SD cards to play with, but it works for me going to USB drives.  I don't have any experience in this, but I'd expect problems with syncing your iPhone if you remove songs from your Library.
What you'll need to do is put iTunes into Song view and select the playlist you want.  You'll need to copy the individual songs - Dragging the name of the playlist won't work.
    Good luck

Restore your library from your most recent backup (you do keep regular backups, I hope).  If the hard drive is in any way salvageable it may be possible to mount it in an external enclosure, connect it to your PC, and retrieve data from it even if it is not functioning as a primary OS drive (if you don't have the kit necessary to do this, your local PC repair shop may be able to help).  Failing that, you can always recreate your library by re-importing your CDs.

  • Windows 7 very slowed after I downloaded ITunes. could someone help me?

My PC with Windows 7 is very slowed since I downloaded iTunes. Could someone help me? Thank you

All purchases from the iTunes Store including free and paid apps are included in your purchase history which cannot be deleted. Deleting an app from your iTunes library on your computer or on your iPad or iOS device does not remove the app from your purchase history.
You did use iTunes to download the apps or they wouldn't be incldued in your iTunes Store purchase history.
