Slow/choppy playback - cache buffering issue

On playback, PP6 randomly slows down and plays back choppy on visually complex shots.  It takes repeated stops and starts to clear it out.  I have troubleshot the life out of this, read every relevant thread, and tried everything imaginable to fix it.  Windows 7 pro is fully optimized.  There are no software conflicts (installed a drive with only windows and CS6)  I’ve got plenty of horsepower - 3930K in an asusp9x79pro, gtx 670 w/4mb, 32mb ram, OC to 4.5.  Eric Bowen at ADK has personally tuned the system and done a manual overclock. Memtest confirms the ram is fine. There are no hardware issues. Dropped frame indicator stays green, no dropped frames.  Switching from hardware to software mercury playback does nothing.  Rendering has no effect, nor do any playback settings. It happens with AVCHD and h.264 mp4’s as well, on short clips, not just long ones. It does not happen outside of ppro. Since I have eliminated hardware and software issues, all this leaves is Premiere.
As Eric explains it, it is a cache buffering issue, related to how the nvidia card and ppro interact, and he sees it frequently enough.  I can't do his explanation justice, but he has offered to jump in and provide more detail if need be.
Whatever it is, it’s ridiculous.   It is totally unacceptable to play down a sequence and have it intermittently slow down  on a system with this much power that has been properly set up by a pro.  It’s a shame, because it’s the only thing from keeping ppro/cs6 from being the best platform I’ve edited on in my 12 years as an editor.
I’ve filed a bug report, but gotten no response.  If others are seeing it, and can file a bug report, maybe it will be publicly acknowledged and resolved.

Hi,
I  think I have similair problem. First of all my current specs is:
Asus Sabertooth z77 mainboard with intel i7 2700K processor
32 gb (8*4) ram
120 gb ssd sata3 drive for OS and CS6
500 gb sata3 7200rpm hd for cache files
1 tb sata3 7200rpm hd for source video and audio
and finally Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti with 2gb of memory
Blackmagic shuttle io card etc
This system were combined specially for my endless highend compositing needs and it works like a charm with all applications other than Premiere Pro.
Yesterday I barley finished editing a short (approx 2 minutes) 1080p project that shot with Canon 5D MKII. Without using mercury playback engine application
works fine but once I activate it all playback became really slow and laggy and sometime it freeze if I move playhead quickly.
I only use one video and one audio track in timeline so we can say this editing scenario is a fundamental for production grade NLE application.
My graphic processor has a lot of cuda power but Adobe doesn't support it natively so I have to edit  the famous text file.
On CS5 and CS5.5 I done lots of 1080p project with my old gtx 480 card and I never encountered any similair problem.
I hope my favorite and trusted software company Adobe will find the problem and will fix it soon...
Thanks
M.Maya

  • More choppy playback issues

None of the previous discussions have provided a solution, even though I followed all of their advice.
    I have a new project, started on CC2014 V8.2.0
    OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
    Macbook Pro I7 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB
Working on 1920X1080 sequence, *no* effects, absolutely none
footage and project file  on external thunderbolt 2Gb Western Digital HD
After playing the sequence for a few seconds, it starts to 'hang' and 'stutter' and will not play smoothly.
    I have:
clicked "Maximum Render Quality" in sequence settings
unchecked "Composite in Linear Color" (although it keeps checking itself back on)
cleared all the caches, both within Premier, and using "WhatSize" app
    restarted, rebooted, re-everythinged
Still will not play smoothly.  Any suggestions? Besides going back to FCX that is....

    1. two weeks ago I completed a project with footage from the same camera, on the same computer, with the same drivers, and had no problem, so I have trouble believing it's the Nvidia driver.
    2. I did turn off, then on, then off, then on, etc. the GPU acceleration, no effect
    3. Again, the same project I completed two weeks ago was from the same external HD (You're right, 2Tb, sorry) and again no problem.
    4. I upgraded to Yosemite just a couple of weeks after it came out, long enough ago that I can't remember exactly when, but again have completed many projects since without this problem.
    5. I can play the mp4 files on any other program smoothly, VLC, Quicktime, RealPlayer, etc. so it's not the footage.
I went through the forums and tried every suggestion I  found, and it seems like there were indeed a lot of issues with choppy playback, and a lot of suggestions on how to fix it. None of the steps put forward have helped, and according to at least one of the forums I've read, that person was unable to find a workable solution. Starting from scratch seems pointless, since I just started this project fresh a few days ago.
I really feel like in the latest update from Adobe something else got screwed up and I have no choice but to live with it until they decide to acknowledge it and fix it.

  • ITunes 11 HD video playback slow/choppy/stutter/skipping in OSX

    Hi guys,
I'm running iTunes 11.0.1 in OS 10.8.2 on my 2.66 GHzm, 8 GB RAM MacBook Pro and playback in HD (1080p) movies/TV shows in iTunes is slow, choppy, stuttering and skipping. Can't seem to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I was having this same problem, and found one cause.
I have an extensive library on a Drobo FS.  None of the AppleTV's in the house have any problem streaming full 1080p from it, but my new iMac does.  Choppy / laggy video play.  Movies and TV shows right from the iTunes store.  I can have 3 TV's streaming, and even a 4th laptop, all streaming from the iMac iTunes using the Drobo.  They all have zero issues.  No lag, no choppy, nothing.  iMac has the issue even when nothing else is running.  Every time.
BTW, it's happend on my old iMac and the brand new one, both with iTunes 11.
I was told to try setting up a second account on my iMac, and try playing video there.  It worked.  No problems at all.  Weird.
So I started looking at differences between the new account, and my standard.  I'd already made sure nothing unusual was running, and no processor hogs (not that anything short of Handbrake at full settings has come close to pegging out the processers on the new box).  I found one thing, that made a difference.  I had Timemachine backups, going to the same Drobo FS (though a different partition) turned on on the iMac.
Timemachine was running the whole time, and didn't impact any other streaming from the same machine, but it did make iTunes video playback of 1080p movies skip like my 6 year old daughter on the iMac.  I turned it off.... no more skipping.  I've watched 5 TV shows and 2 movies on that account, and not had another single incident.
Obviously, there is still a problem.  The iMac and Drobo have enough bandwidth that they can do all the work at the same time (or I'd be seeing the problem on the other devices while streaming), but they are not playing well together on the same account.  I've also checked the throughput to the Drobo FS from the iMac... way more than necessary.  If it were a read / write thing on the Drobo, then I'd expect other devices to see the issue when I'm watching something on the iMac that is skipping, but there was still no skipping on any other device at that same time...
But, as I said, I found the root cause in my case.  I can turn off Timemachine backups while I'm watching a movie on the iMac, or I can move where I write the Timemachine backups to (going to try this over the weekend to be sure it works).  If moving the Timemachine backup to a different drive doesn't work, it's a bigger problem.
I'd really love to see Apple fix this and the issue where I have to turn iTunes on in 32bit mode when using an external library (of it gives the funky quicktime error until you delete and readd the movie).
Hope this helps some of you, if not all.

  • Still Getting Buffering Issues and Slow Web Page L...

Since I suspect this issue hasn't gone away - and I/we have been asked to post issues individually rather than clumping into a single tread.
I just got back from Spain and after quizzing family it seems we are still getting Stream Buffering Issues (again)  (requires a refresh restart << I suspect lost packets rather than speed decrease) and webpages sometimes don't load correctly and require a refresh to load all page elements.
Just before I left there was an Openreach engineer working on the CAB and my noise margin doubled (but given my distance from the CAB and no speed issues I think the higher margin is a bonus not a negative << so hard to get uncontradictary posts or guidance on the web about Noise Margins - speeds still ok atm according to BTW but havent been back long enough to monitor thru the day/night.
I can only assume there are still backhaul issues ongoing.
I notice other ISP forums eg Plusnet noting capacity contention issues but BT remains Silent.
It's such a shame BT aren't more forthcoming to their customers and I feel really cheated/mis-sold by the whole Infinity 2 product 'never have to buffer again' - advertising hype. This has been a problem here since mid December - so we're talking a month worth of connection issues.
Since someone will probably ask me for HH stats - here you go - apologies to all those more than 20m from the CAB who are struggling on much slower speeds (I feel for you honest) and in terms of the available speeds etc feel this HAS TO BE a BTW backhaul issue - be it from exchange or in the core.
    I'm all open to comment/solutions

Short answer Ray - nope I only use WiFi on the phone.
Well for the benefit of others as much as myself I am still having issues and gave up on an iPlayer (live stream) due several bursts of buffering again tonight which made me miss the bits I was really interested in.
    So...
Eliminating anything in the home the following tests are done directly into the HH5s Gb port. I normally use a switch in this port to seperate my PC's from iThings and anything else on WiFi  (the kids)(BTFon/X) - never had any issues with my switch tho and it will push pull files to/from my NAS or transfer files around my three PCs at full speed << so no concerns there, but NOT used in these tests.
All wired with industry Grade CAT6 << even ran a checker tool on it and no probs << yip I have such things available.
Following Stats are after a complete shut down :
PC Restarted without Firewall or any AntiVirus - no other network connections active and HH5 WiFi Dissabled. HH5 Power Off and Factory Reset (I've tried previously as suggested by other posters using the Openreach modem but since it didnt solve anything just went back to the HH5 to save a power socket and my HH5 can stay up for 13 or so days without issues so I don't suffer in disconnection issues dept). Ok i could buy another router but I doubt its the problem and im just **bleep** away cash for what would then be a replacement for 'not fit for purpose' supplied equipment.
Quiet Line test = clear << tested master socket with wired phone.
    My Cabinet :
    BTWholesale Speed Test :
Interestingly i'm getting way lower UPLOAD than the minimum even on an impaired line (I'm only about 20m from the cabinet as the cable runs - less if I want to kick it) << this does seem to fluctate a lot.
    TBB Speedtest :
I'm open to suggestions but have just about had enuff...
I still maintain this is a congeston issue but that BT are in total denial to customers about what traffic shaping occurs to maintain the QoS for their YouView and BTSports Customers at the expense of other data under 'abnormal conditions' like lack of capacity.
So unless a MOD wants to jump in and resolve this quickly, I have several letters ready to go to various parts of BT - Customer Complaints/Sales(for misleading claims)/and Legal Dept. Just need the stamps + a cc copy to Ofcom. This is the last phase of having done ALL I CAN BE REASONABLY EXPECTED TO DO through the BTs compaints proceedures. so that I can send a breach of contract notification to escape this madness.
Yours xx, a very dissatisfied customer.

  • ITunes 7.1 choppy playback issue on Leopard

I upgraded to Leopard today and updated my iTunes to 7.1. Unfortunately after doing so, I could not get any song to playback continuously. Some songs would only start after a few seconds or play for a second. Any guesses?
    Thanks,
    Sayaka

I've had choppy playback so much I could puke.
One reason seems to be if memory is filling up. See Activity Monitor and if the green part of memory is going away, that's one reason. Seems the only solution is to reboot as quitting all programs doesn't bring back any green and doesn't solve skipping problems.
Another reason is some other activity. If you're scrolling fast or crunching pixels in Photoshop, that could cause skips in the moment. It shouldn't, but it happens to me, and has been happening for a year or two.
But I think this latest release has some problem. Suddenly there's lots of threads talking about it. ANd I have it skipping with 3gigs of free ram free, and only Safari showing a simple page running on it.
The first song after I reboot, plays ok, but then it stutters, like fifty or a hundred periods of silence per song, scattered around randomly, each 0.1 to 1 second long. All songs finish, if you call that finishing, and they seem to take the correct amount of time to finish.
Maddening. iTunes is my stereo now!! will I have to go back to the old CD player?

  • Premiere choppy playback after update

    Greetings,
I'm having a rather bizarre issue which has just came about recently.
I've been running PPro CC successfully for six months without issue. After the most recent update to 7.2.2 I'm having choppy playback both in the source and program monitors. I'm editing mostly AVCHD from a Panasonic HMC80 camera. The choppy playback occurs regardless of resolution or frame rate. I even tried a standard DV file and that too is playing back not smooth. Changing the playback resolution to 1/2, 1/4 etc.. makes no difference.  Changing from Mercury software to hardware makes no difference. I tried creating a new project as well as clearing cache files, previews, etc.. and still have the problem. As a last effort, I re-installed my OS, and re-installed Creative Cloud and Premiere. The issue is still present. My hardware cannot be the issue as I've been editing successfully before. Nothing has changed except for the Premiere update. I've read elsewhere that others are experiencing the same issue. Any thoughts?
    Windows 7 Home
    Premiere Pro CC 7.2.2
    i7 [email protected]
    8GB RAM
    NVIDIA GT 425M

Im having the same problem. Didnt show up until after the 7.2 update.
Major lag on one specific spot in the timeline, and muting all tracks makes no difference on the lag.
I cleaned my project file, caches, downgraded playback resolution, tried the mercury playback function. Nothing. Now the choppiness seems to bleed into the rest of the project until it is all so slow and unplayable. I'm having a harder time finishing this project as time goes on.

  • Choppy playback in CC, suddenly

Yes, yet another mysterious choppy, jerky playback out-of-the-blue issue.
Premiere Pro CC 7.01, Mac, was working relatively fine for a few weeks on a couple projects. Now, on new project, exact same setup and media as before, I get playback that is fine, then after a few moments or a minute, gets choppy, as my CPU becomes increasingly pegged, as if GPU acceleration becomes disabled with time. Cannot edit when it is like that. I give it a rest for a few moments, can play ok for a minute, then CPU and choppiness creaps up again.
    Premiere Pro CC 7.0.1
    Mac OSx 10.8.2
Nikon D800 and D7000 .mov files, 1920-x1080 23.976fps, High Quality
    Sequence: DSLR 1920x1080x23.976fps
Project: Mercury OpenCL GPU (via AMD Radeon 6770m in Macbook Pro.) No change if switch to Software Only.
Premier Pref/Memory: either Optimize for Performance or Memory, and restart. No effect.
Playback Resolution: 1/2. Always worked before.
No other software running. (Time Machine enabled, not backing up. Crashplan paused or service unloaded did not help.)
When CPU pegs, it is kernal_task and Premiere at top of All Processes/%CPU table in Activity Monitor.
    Macbook Pro, late 2011, quad-core 2.5 GHz i7, 16GB memory. Apogee Duet2 audio output.
Source files and cache files and preview files on Pegaus Raid on Thunderbolt. NEC monitor on Thunderbolt. Premiere on internal drive.
No complex layers, effects. Just straight video and 2-4 tracks of audio. So little to no Previews rendered.  Timeline bar is yellow, which always played fine (via OpenCL.) Rendering Previews of a few minute section does not help.
Happens whether doing multicam sequence or simple cuts.
Cleaned media cache (Premiere/Prefs/Media/clean cache.) No Previews to clean out.
Graphics Switching disabled, so always on Radeon.
Only Changes since it was working -
CC app update (i.e. the menu bar thing, but I usually Quit that anyway.)
Indesign CC, Extension Manager update (but never launched.)
More memory allocated to Crashplan (but if I pause or unload that service no effect. And memory does not seem to be an issue looking at Activity Monitor.)
Checked Files on and rebuilt Thunderbolt raid directory (with DiskWarrior, just as general maintenance.)
Apple Timecapsule firmware updated to 7.6.4.
Maybe Java updated to v7 update 25 during that time.
    Thanks,
    Vincent

Solved. (Possibly only temporarily - I will report back.)
Unfortunately I was in panic mode so I was not using scientific method to fix my problem – more of a shotgun method.
Major variables here so I’ll try to recap.
#1) I started messing round with Lumetri “SpeedLooks” LUTS for the first time directly in Premiere. I have been using the lumetri looks that are in premiere now – but I have never gone and grabbed a lut from somewhere else – which I did when I imported the SpeedLook luts from the Speedgrade program folder. This was the beginning of the end – whatever happened started slowing everything down and started giving me choppy codec/frame rate issue feeling problems ever forward – even when I would play stripped down clips directly from my camera on the source menu.
#2) I started rolling my nvidia driver back and forward while troubleshooting – I ended up in the forward most current position, but who knows.
#3) As mentioned I uninstalled and reinstalled Adobe Cloud and Premiere in order to get to the newest version. Adobe Cloud was lying to me about my apps being up to date. Don’t believe the lies. Terrible lies. Will this keep happening? Is there even support for the Adobe Creative Cloud app itself? On the latest and greatest (ahem) version of both for now.
#4) I was constantly creating a new project for troubleshooting but this time I decided to save it in a completely new folder way out on my root nowhere near where my video projects have been for the past 9 months. Once I relocated the project and the source files to a new distant location I dragged some footage on the timeline and it worked! Then I loaded it with effects (no LUTS, not that brave) and it worked!  I was back to my old self as though my home office was the TARDIS.
So… If it is a weird corrupt file or old cach preview files issue, will these bad vibe files start building up again in this new location and one day out of the blue I’ll suddenly be editing in 1979 on a TRS-80 again? Why did this start happening to my projects to begin with? Did the SpeedLook LUTS create the possibly bad preview/cache files to begin with? Did this happen because I was messing with SpeedLook LUTS inside premiere, with Canon 5D footage on an unbeknownst to me (or Adobe Cloud) old (7.0) version of Premiere thinking I was on the latest version? Dare I try LUTS again now that I'm finally stable?
I’m a paranoid gunshy mess over this.
When it finally worked I literally watched a few clips for a coupla minutes and had to run. I’ll put it through its paces tonight and see if we’re finally back to the future. (But I’ll probably hold off on LUTs until I get some insight/feedback – because I can’t go through this again – I’ll just have to make my contrasty blue and teal magic in 3-Way CoCo until then.

  • Reverse Speed Causing Choppy Playback

I am using CC Premiere Pro 2014 and am getting choppy playback when I reverse the footage. The footage is slow and jumpy. The footage is mp4 shot at 24 fps. I have rendered the clip and still get the same results. Using a new souped up Mac and have cleared the cache so computer isn't the issue. Any way to fix this?

  • Apple TV buffering issues with iPhone 4s and iPad 2

    Hi all,
I just got me an Apple TV 2nd gen (yeah, I know, ordered 2 days before the presentation of the new one). So far so good, the device is up and running, connects just fine to my Airport Express router and all.
However, if I try to stream a video from my iPad (2) or my iPhone (4S), the results are quite horriffic. The iPad videos would buffer for a very long time before they start and then quite fast after that the buffering problems restart. It's pretty impossible to play a video fluently of more than 20 seconds. If I'd try from my iPhone it's even worse with videos being 1080p, the thing just never plays, eventually the preloading process stops on the mirroring mode is cut.
I have to point out, all my devices are in the same room (WiFi) so the signal is the best it can be.
This is honestly quite surprising AND disappointing to be honest, given I bought the device mostly for that, so I can stream videos from my phone and pad.
Tell me, am I doing something wrong, or the video streaming over those devices is just a marketing gimmick with nothing real behind it?
Would it matter if I change my router from Airport express to Airport extreme?
    Thanks!

I have the same issue with ATV3 and iPhone 4S. Everything works properly, no buffering issues when watching netflix, vimeo, youtube BUT when I try mirroring even a small 15sec iPhone movie it stutters and buffers and results to a choppy playback..same with larger mp4 files such as 1-1.5GB, buffers forever and never plays, I just re-encoded the same movie to 700MB and plays perfectly..
Why Apple, why?..so close..I can accept the bigger movie files issue, but not being able to playback properly an iPhone movie is funny..I recorded a movie with lower bitrate through Filmic Pro (Economy mode, up to 16Mbps)
    and plays properly.
Is there an upcoming software update going to solve the problem or is it hardware related and therefore not fixable.
Please don't reply with a network related answer, by 2012 we know how to set up our networks and everything else runs flawlessly.
I'll apreciate a fast answer, we love Apple, but if it can't play an iphone movie (or a high quality movie from iTunes) it's just not up to my standards.
    Thanks again.

  • Choppy Playback when using the PLAYBACK feature in preferences

I've been running into an issue since the PPro CC 7.1 update in October where Premiere will play footage just fine until you tell it to send a signal out to another monitor. Before hand everyhting played fine in the Program and Playback Monitors. Now whenever switched on it plays back choppy constantly. Doesn't matter the footage format.
To further explain -- I have a 3 monitor setup 2 for editing and a thrid for preview playback. All of this runs via my Retina MacBook Pro and has worked fine since PPro 6.0. Never had any slowdown and its been one of my favorite features in PPro.
So when this update came around I ran into the playback issues mentioned above. So I just keep playback switched off and just leave the third monitor barren... figuring it was a bug (?) I waited and saw a few updates, but nothing that fixed said problem. Though with each update and bug fix I've eagerly gone through the same exercise of trying out this feature once more. Again, nothing has changed... However I found out this evening, that when using my three monitors and suffering through the playback, that I can tell monitor to toggle to full screen and instantly my playback monitor has corrected itself and the two play in perfect sync (quick note the program monitor is choppy when not in full screen mode and trying to playback with the third monitor). I can toggle on and off during this playback and when on its fine, the moment its off, its choppy again. Absolutely bizzare. And to some extent makes my playback monitor somewhat useful agian... albeit in a very tedious fashion.
The point is, I'm at my wits end again here. I've seen plenty of choppy playback post, but nothing quite like this. I've tried to clearing caches, and preferences, even did a unistall/reistall tongiht... and I'm coming up with the same issues in the exact same places. But ultimately I am no closer to finding a proper solution to this particular playback issue. Aside from doing a clean install of the OS and all my software, though I'm not sure its worth it just yet. Even if its my last resort.
Has anyone run across playback as bizzare as this? Did you find a solution? Is there a post I've missed? - Thanks

  • Choppy playback/rendering for one camera in a multicam sequence

Any help is appreciated with this weird, specific problem...
I have a sequence (let's call it "MAIN") which contains many separate multicam sequences (let's call them "M1" through "M5").  Each of these multicam sequences is made up of footage from two cameras, a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon C100.  All footage in M1-5 was shot sequentially, and neither camera changed settings, although the cameras recorded with different settings from each other.  The 5DIII recorded at 1080p 23.976fps.  The C100 at 1080i 60Hz.  This footage makes up all the assets in my project panel and they have no special media interpretation.
Here's the problem.  Everything looks/plays fine until I get to M3 in my MAIN sequence.  When I switch to camera 2 (the 5DIII), the playback in the program monitor looks about half the framerate of the original footage and all of my other sequences.  Camera 1 plays smoothly.  Camera 2 in any of the other multicam sequences plays smoothly (while in MAIN).  When I open up M3 in the timeline, it plays smoothly.  When I open up the original video in the source window, it plays smoothly.  Everything plays smoothly but camera 2 in M3 (in MAIN) in the program monitor.
I rendered a clip of MAIN that has M3 cam 1, to cam 2, back to cam 1.  Camera 1 is smooth, while camera 2 plays back at about half frame rate and looks interlaced.  So this is a real problem and not just some display issue.
The interlaced look of the render made me think there's some sequence settings that were off, whether they were in MAIN or M1-M5.  However, the sequence settings of M1-M5 are all identical, and the sequence settings of MAIN are not affecting any of the other multicam sequences.
I tried restarting my computer and deleting my cache.  No dice.

    HP Z820 w/ 2 x Xeon E5-2630
    128GB RAM
    GTX-570
Addendum: After playing around with sequence settings a bit, but after resetting them to be all as they were, now M2 is giving choppy playback on camera 1, while camera 2 plays smoothly.  What in the world is going on here?

The LEDs were reflecting on the book that the GoPro was on but I got it to work with a garbage matte using a frame grab with the lights off and including the book. It worked a treat! But I am going to remember the dark grey matte thing; less is more and all that. Thank you for your input, much appreciated. Ooh and as for multicam syncing I just nested the composite shot and used that as a single camera source.

  • Why am I getting such choppy playback?

Long time reader, first time poster, I'll make this short and sweet. Here are my specs:
    Imac 27"
    3.4 GHz Intel Core i7
    24 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2048 MB
    1TB internal Fusion drive SSD
I am working in a fairly big (1TB footage) 4k mixed with 2k project. It's a 3 simultaneous camera shoot, so I need to multi-cam. I have two external WD Caviar Black 7200rpm drives. I also have a Lacie 1TB Thunderbolt drive available.
Because the final output will be 1080, but possibly 2k in the future, I decided to import all the RED footage natively (as opposed to transcoding to prores 1080). All my sequences are 1920x1080, with multi-cam nesting in 1080 as well. Ram is allocated to 20GB Premiere, 4GB other.
No matter what I've tried, I always get choppy playback in the project...especially with multi-cam activated, even at setting my resolution to 1/4. What I've tried:
All Media on WD 01 drive...Project, Cache, Preview, Scatch on WD 02 drive...Internal SSD for OS and Apps: Terrible performance
All media split between WD 01 and WD 02...Cache, OS and Apps on Internal SSD...project, preview, scratch on WD 01. I also tried the same thing but with the project, preview, and scratch on my Lacie 1TB Thunderbolt and internal SSD: Slightly better than all media on 01 drive.
At this point I feel like I've tried every variation of where the MEDIA, Cache, project, and Scratch/preview files go but nothing seems to give me smooth playback consistently. I'll have brief periods where it's very smooth, but then choppy soon after. I'd understand if I were trying to edit in 2k or 4k, but all my timelines and nests are 1080. Even if I pre-render the sequence, it barely helps. Is it possible I need more RAM, a better GFX card, better external drives? Help?!
EDIT: Premiere 2014 updated to latest version. No big apps running aside from Premiere. All my drives have at least or close to 50% space available.

Recommend you take a look for disc layout & such over at the Tweaker's Page ...
    Tweaker's Page ...
    http://ppbm7.com/index.php/tweakers-page
Basically they recommend just the program file on the system/OS disc ... and then putting things on other drives as per the needs of the "asset" ... some need very fast connects, a couple only mostly fast connections.
Footage is mostly a one-way read-only operation, and export out is mostly a read operation, so those can at need be on somewhat slower connections as long as they aren't on the SAME drive over a slower connection. Such as say one of the PNY 128Gb high-speed USB3 flash-drives into a USG3.0 external port on your computer. I've adapted this from one of the other users, and it works fairly well for my 1080p footage. I export to one of several drives I've got in external boxes connected via USB. It's adequate, though not blazing.
Everything else ... project files, database, previews, cache ... there's a TON of read/write work going on constantly during playback with these. So 7200 or faster "standard" drives or SSD drives, connected internally via SATA-II or better, or external via eSATA-II and Thunderbolt connections are needed. None of the Firewire nor USB2/3 connections available have near adequate sustained read/write speeds to work in the massive testing they've done at the above mentioned site. The "burst" speeds claimed by manufacturers are achieved on the absolute most ideal set-up with the um ... right size? ... of data packets to get the best numbers. They aren't usable numbers for heavy and constant read/write demands like the Adobe DVA's through at the machine.
Remember ... during playback ... PrPro "reads" the source footage including when to jump in & out of every clip, throws in all your instructions for editing, color changes, transistions, effects, EVERYTHING ... and on-the-fly builds the image you see in the playback monitor. It doesn't make something for it to just 'read' from disc, it does this on the fly. Even when you make previews for a section of a timeline, any change you make ... those previews are outdated.
Which is why we all need machines that both have pretty solid hardware off the mobo, AND plenty of high-speed disc connections. Best case is say a 4/5 disc array of 2Tb discs in RAID 0 or 5 for the project files, d-base, cache, & previews ... and that can maybe even have media (original footage) on it.

  • 100 %CPU utilizationis , cache buffers chains and cursor: pin S

    Hi every one ,
we have incident causing system response very slow with very bad response time, below top 5 wait events from AWR (RAC database)
Event Waits Time(s) Avg Wait(ms) % Total Call Time Wait Class
    latch: cache buffers chains 122,492 198,139 1,618 16.8 Concurrency
    gc buffer busy 119,903 83,248 694 7.1 Cluster
    cursor: pin S 18,674,280 72,651 4 6.2 Other
    log file sync 639,867 66,673 104 5.7
    Commit latch free 143,519 54,239 378 4.6 Other
Oracle support clearly identified the issue with latch cache buffer chains as SQL statement executed around 35000 times which is too high based on execution plan . and they suggest to tune SQL statements .
my question is cursor: pin S wait on X and library cache lock related ot it is just a symptoms , and is document 742599.1 applicable to us or not as we have 10.2.0.5 (suggest disable automatic memory management)
As I know high CPU utilization as result of latch: cache buffers chains , the cursor Pin S Wait should not .
    Thank you in advance

    Hi,
All these 4 top events (excluding log file sync) are quite unusual and in your case, if all these are comming atop, these quite well be related. So, you can't say that cursor pin s wait on x should not be dealt saperatly, but, still you can try out suggestion in the note. First find out from v$sgasta about current allocation of shared pool, then after disabling automatic memory management, increase shared_pool significantly as compared to current value, and then monito the system
Definitely you should tune your SQL also, as suggested by support.

    Hi Jdentremont,
Lync client gets user photos by first querying the Address Book Web Query (ABWQ) service on the server, which is exposed through the Distribution List Expansion web service. The client receives
the image file and then copies it to the user's cache to avoid downloading the image each time it needs to be displayed. The attribute values returned from the query are also stored in the cached Address Book Service entry for the user. The Address Book Service
deletes all cached images every 24 hours, which means that it can take up to 24 hours for new user images to be updated in the cache on the server.
To troubleshoot your problem, please follow the steps below:
    1.  Navigate to
     “X:\share\1-WebServices-1\ABfiles\000000000\000000000” folder. (ABS file share)
You should see some photo files in this folder as the following screenshot.
    2. Delete all the files in this folder.
    3. On test PC, delete local cache files.
    %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\[email protected]
    4. Sign-in Lync with the test account.
    5. Go back to the ABS file share, check if there is any Photo file in the folder.
    Best regards,
    Eric

  • HD video has choppy playback on timeline

    Equipment:
    New MacPro 2 X 2.93 GHz 6-Core intel Xeon
    12GBs Ram
Nvidia Quadro 4000 2048 MB video card
    Software 10.7.2
Video Card:  Kona 3 with 9.0.3 driver & 9.01 premier plugin
Videodrive:  7200 RPM 2 TB internal (not the system drive)  remaining space about 750 GB
    Adobe CS 5.5 software
I just switched from FCP 7 to CS5.5 including a new computer which I perceive is optimized for CS 5.5.  In playback my audio is choppy and dropping out some of the time, then if I stop and start the payback it will be fine, or sometimes there is no audio.  doesn't seem to be any consistencey in what will happen the next time I start playback.  On the timeline is a 1080i ProRes file I finished in FCP 7, then imported the video & audio file to Premier to make a couple of last minute changes.  Program is 50 minutes long.  I have the sequence setup as Kona 1080i compressed.  I imagine I have missed something very basic here, but don't have a clue what it could be.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thx...Jim Watt

    John,
I don't really think it's applicable in this particular situation.  I have just switched to PP for FCP-7.  All my FCP 7 shows are mastered in ProRes and this last one of course was too and it's the one I had to make a small change in.  I didn't see anything in the post you referred me to that suggests that PP cannot/will not play back proRes material.
At the moment I'm screening DVCPROHD 1080i material and I'm having the same problem with choppy playback/freezes and lost audio in the viewer.  I saw a post that came from Walter Biscardi for audio setup and followed that, which did seem to help a little, but the problem still exists.  This is what i did...
Audio...set preferences in Premier to "built in output" and also set audio mapping to same, set audio hardware to "built in output"  with caches at 1024
set computer preferences audio output to Kona card...
So I think this is some sort of setup that I have missed since I get identical problem with ProRes and DVCPROHD.  Any other sugestions will be most appreciated.  I'll give AJA a call tomorrow if I can't find a fix on the forum.
    thx...jw
