Slow, choppy video w/ 64-bit Athlon CPU & 32-bit Win XP

Hello all,
My folks have an older computer.
(Please no replies that say "get a new computer." I have an old computer, too - probably older than my folks' - and Flash works just fine on it.)
I seem to recall reading somewhere a while ago that there is a problem with Flash working on a computer that has a 64-bit CPU but using Windows XP 32-bit version. That's the configuration.
What happens is that the audio plays fine, but the video lags behind and is choppy.
This happens in all browsers. It happens in safe mode with networking. It happens with hardware acceleration enabled and disabled. It happens across all Web sites - any site that uses Flash player has this problem on their system.
32-bit Windows XP Pro - Version 2002, Service Pack 3
64-bit AMD Athlon 64 CPU 3000+, 2.0 GHz
2 GB of RAM
Flash version 11,9,900,170 installed
All of the latest updates for the OS, Flash, and all browsers.
I'm happy to provide more specs - just tell me what you need to know.
Also, I notice that in all browers, whenever i play flash videos, the CPU spikes to 100% constantly.
I've been searching the Web in vain for an answer.
Would greatly appreciate any help that anyone could provide.
Thanks in advance.
And Happy Holidays.

I would try rolling back to an older version of flash. I think some if the recent releases of flash have been ultra buggy. I have quite a powerful laptop cpu/gpu and recent versions of flash are a bit choppy for me too. This forum has had a huge increase in posters with problems. Video should pose no problem for a computer even if it is a few years old.

  • Safari 4 exhibiting slow, choppy video playback

Since I've updated Safari on my G5, I can no longer watch videos or flash with it. They all play extremely slow and choppy to where it's impossible to watch. This problem extends to simple flash as well.
    I know it's not my G5 because:
    1) No such problems occurred prior to Safari 4
    2) Right now I can watch the same videos on my G5 in Firefox perfectly which I can't in Safari
I'm just looking for confirmation here, so if anyone else with a non-Intel Mac is experiencing this trouble, please let me know. Also, if this is a known problem, let me know that as well (I didn't see that it was going through the search tool). Finally, if anyone knows a fix for this other than the obvious one of using Firefox instead, please chime in with that info, too.
    Thanks

    Fine, we'll start again!
It may be worth reinstalling FlashPlayer.
The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1ProdVersion=ShockwaveFlash
(You can check here: http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/ to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS.
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_14157
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed the correct version for your Mac of Security Update 2009-001 (and for Tiger only, 2009-002 and 003). (N.B. Security Updates require both a restart and a permission repair.)

  • Super Slow / Choppy Video and Audio / ?

    Hello Helpful Co-Users...
I am a fairly experienced film editor who has, in the last 2 years, begun working on small projects on iMovie. I am currently finishing up the third part of a three part project, and have come up to a problem I can't solve with any of the solutions I've already found on this forum: this 26-minute project is completely slowing my computer down beyond recognition. While the other two parts have, more or less, run fine (at 30:00 and 45:00) this project has recently begun to <really> slow the system down. Lags, choppiness, spinning wheel, the works.
I've done a clean re-install of 10.4.3, run Onyx, cleared iMovie bookmarks, cleared my QT Prefs, deleted preferences, run Disk Utility, done the 'Garage Band' trick I learned in this forum, and while these great tips have really got the machine working great otherwise, squeaky clean, this movie just kills.
Now, HERE's the rub: while the other two projects did use alot of CF/X crops, extracted audio, FX, and transitions, this one uses almost all cropped shots with of audio extraction (it's a sound-heavy piece, and I need reliable cross-fades, and there are lots of slowed down FX as well) that, I'm learning now, is possibly just too heavy of a burden for iMovie. It was working great, but then I just hit a wall. I wade around in the movie for awhile after a fresh restart, and then the wheel starts spinning, and the speed goes down to like
    .1 megahertz. Ouch.
My question is: have I really hit the wall? Is there a chance that I have a corrupted clip that's slowing everything down (something that was hurting a previous project)? If so, how can I best find this corrupted clip?
Is there a way to render these clips, FX, crops and transitions–-while still working in iMovie–-to help it run faster?
Is there a way of salvaging this film, whether by importing it into FCP? Or should I just kill some of the not-completely-necessary audio extractions and re-render the clips?
I invite your comraderie and expertise...I have a feeling there's something I'm missing that 2 days of diligent searching can't get at...
Thanks so much: and thanks for all the solutions that previous posts have helped me to uncover...

    Welcome to the forum, Brandon.
Unfortunately, I don't think anyone has discovered why this slowdown occurs. My guess is -- and it's only a guess -- that lots of extracted audio clips adds to the likelihood of it happening. If so, exporting the audio, then importing it should make the problem go away.
You would share the project to an AIFF sound file, then import that file back into the project and disable your other audio track. To export, choose File>Share>QuickTime > Expert Settings > Sound to AIFF.
Not ideal, for it makes the audio harder to edit. But if that's not an issue it might be a workaround.
This problem appears to be disk-related in some way. Sometimes moving the project to another disk solves the problem. Reformatting the disk has helped too.

You've obviously covered the bases on this. If you discover something that works, please let us know.
This bug is long overdue for squashing.

  • Adobe Captivate Outputting/Rendering Slow, Sluggish, and Choppy Video when ScreenCasting

When I screencast my desktop and then output/render the video that Adobe Captivate recorded, the video is always so choppy, sluggish, and slow.
I set the frames per second to 80 and interval to 1, 5, and 10, and still choppy video.
My system specfications are as follows:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64-bit SP1
    CPU: Intel Core i7 @ 3.40 GHz | Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology
    RAM: 16.0 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon HD 6600 Series
Is there something that I am doing wrong during/after I record?
    Any help would be awesome!
    Thank you!

    Hey Anjaneai,
I mean slow as in my Cursor movements are not as smooth as I expected with this software.
I have chosen the Video Demo recording mode.
I did check the option to show "Actions in Real Time" from Recording and it only applies to Audio. I am speaking of video. I have tried comparing. I tried comparing with Software Demo, but it's impossible to compare, seeing as Adobe Captivate generates the mouse for you.
I thought that the higher the Frame Rates the smoother the experience.
    Thank you!

  • Slow FPS, graphics and choppy video when connected to a Mini-DVI cable to external monitor on Macbook Mid2007 4GB RAM

    Hi,
I have a Mid-2007 Macbook white. I have upgraded its memory to 4GB. Snow Leopard was working great, and I said to myself maybe it's time to upgrade to Lion.
After the upgrade all was well. However, a big problem occurs when I plug in to the Mini-DVI display port with the HDMI adapter, to connect to my Sony LCD HDTV. The whole graphics and video slow down, everything is choppy. Quicktime and VLC video playback is strobe and choppy looks like very low Frame Rate. Cannot watch anything, not HD nor low resolutions. The entire computer is slow when the cable is connected.
    Things I tried:
*VGA adapter seems to work fine - it's the digital display output that probably causes that.
*Running it through a new user.
This never happened on Snow Leopard. i'm considering to go back. However, I am wondering if there is a way to fix this minor problem.

    Update:
We solved the problem. Weird solution but now it seems to work. I plugged a VGA adpater and played with the screen rsolutions to try and watch a movie well on my LCD screen. I changed the screen resolutions but I couldn't revert back to the default settings. Pressing "Detect Displays" didn't do anything.
Here is the interesting part: When I placed back the DVI-HDMI adapter, suddenly everything worked fine!!! There was no choppy videos, no low fps, works prefect.
Something weird is going on here, but I'm happy I managed to get the DVI to HDMI to work because I was about to removie Lion and bring back Snow Leopard.

  • ITunes 11 HD video playback slow/choppy/stutter/skipping in OSX

    Hi guys,
I'm running iTunes 11.0.1 in OS 10.8.2 on my 2.66 GHzm, 8 GB RAM MacBook Pro and playback in HD (1080p) movies/TV shows in iTunes is slow, choppy, stuttering and skipping. Can't seem to fix it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks!

I was having this same problem, and found one cause.
I have an extensive library on a Drobo FS.  None of the AppleTV's in the house have any problem streaming full 1080p from it, but my new iMac does.  Choppy / laggy video play.  Movies and TV shows right from the iTunes store.  I can have 3 TV's streaming, and even a 4th laptop, all streaming from the iMac iTunes using the Drobo.  They all have zero issues.  No lag, no choppy, nothing.  iMac has the issue even when nothing else is running.  Every time.
BTW, it's happend on my old iMac and the brand new one, both with iTunes 11.
I was told to try setting up a second account on my iMac, and try playing video there.  It worked.  No problems at all.  Weird.
So I started looking at differences between the new account, and my standard.  I'd already made sure nothing unusual was running, and no processor hogs (not that anything short of Handbrake at full settings has come close to pegging out the processers on the new box).  I found one thing, that made a difference.  I had Timemachine backups, going to the same Drobo FS (though a different partition) turned on on the iMac.
Timemachine was running the whole time, and didn't impact any other streaming from the same machine, but it did make iTunes video playback of 1080p movies skip like my 6 year old daughter on the iMac.  I turned it off.... no more skipping.  I've watched 5 TV shows and 2 movies on that account, and not had another single incident.
Obviously, there is still a problem.  The iMac and Drobo have enough bandwidth that they can do all the work at the same time (or I'd be seeing the problem on the other devices while streaming), but they are not playing well together on the same account.  I've also checked the throughput to the Drobo FS from the iMac... way more than necessary.  If it were a read / write thing on the Drobo, then I'd expect other devices to see the issue when I'm watching something on the iMac that is skipping, but there was still no skipping on any other device at that same time...
But, as I said, I found the root cause in my case.  I can turn off Timemachine backups while I'm watching a movie on the iMac, or I can move where I write the Timemachine backups to (going to try this over the weekend to be sure it works).  If moving the Timemachine backup to a different drive doesn't work, it's a bigger problem.
I'd really love to see Apple fix this and the issue where I have to turn iTunes on in 32bit mode when using an external library (of it gives the funky quicktime error until you delete and readd the movie).
Hope this helps some of you, if not all.

  • Choppy video playback with airplay from Macbook Pro

I experience very choppy video using airplay towards my Airplay unit (3rd gen).
I am using a Macbook Pro (15" retina, late 2013 version) with these specifications:
    - Intel Core i7 2.7 GHz.
    - 16 GB ram.
    - 768 GB flash/SSD.
...and so on. I have the Mavericks OS installed (10.9.1).
When I duplicate or extend the screen of the computer to my Apple TV it is chopping EXTREMELY much. I am not talking a little bit - but it is not even watchable. I thought that it could be the router itself as the connection is (probably, correct me if I am wrong anyone) is directed from the computer - to the router - and then to the Apple TV, which could make the router like a filter in the process. And if something would prevent the signal from reaching the Apple TV with "full speed" it could prevent the actuall image.
However, when I am using the iPhone 4S and streaming video (both video found in my phone as well as streamed TV from apps such as Magine.com) the image flows completely flawless. There are not even a touch of lagging. It flows perfect, just as watching a movie directly on the TV.
The networking hardware in the phone is slower than in the Macbook Pro retina (late 2013) - both for sending and recieving data. But still... my iPhone works better than the Macbook Pro for the Apple TV. Even though that the processing, memory, graphic and networking power is probably a thousand times faster in the computer... it still performs really bad.
I have followed some discussion threads here (https://discussions.apple.com/message/22051725#22051725 and https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5734226?tstart=0 just as a couple of examples). I have accessed my router (Netgear Gigabit EVG 2000) and increased the Wireless mode to "up to 270 Mbps. I have also followed the previously linked threads and disabled the WMM (in the QoS-section). I felt that this made a little bit of a difference...
...when I am mirroring the screen and scale down the resolution to match the AirPlay screen (full-HD, 1920 x 1080) it works okay, but still chops quite a bit almost all the time. But if I extend the screen and want to watch TV at the same time as I am doing something else on the computer - then it chops so that it is not even possible to watch.
This have to be something either with the Mavericks OS or with my network settings - can anyone help me...? It would mean A LOT!

Curious why you think it would be my network when the same network is being used by the iPad 3rd Gen and iPhone 5 and they both stream without issue. As far as the other items you mentioned, all devices are up-to-date with the latest firmware/software and the latest MacBooks do not have ethernet ports. Speedtests that I have conducted also indicate that bandwidth is not the issue as the results show that the speeds received from the router are quite impressive.

  • My Photoshop CS3 goes very slow/choppy when I have a selection made.

    Hello,
My Photoshop CS3 goes very slow/choppy when I have a selection made, with those little moving lines indicating the selection (the lines that look like walking ants). When I'm adding to the selection, it's fine again, because the "ants" aren't moving, same with when I hit Q to enter Quick Mask Mode--as long as the "ants" aren't moving, my Photoshop isn't slow. Is there any way to fix this? To either speed up Photoshop or to stop the "ants" from moving, and simply allow selections to be indicated by broken lines, but not moving broken lines?
    Thanks

  • Not sure what just happened...everything just slowed/choppy in the middle of my session

I was working on a project and all of a sudden everything with in PS got noteably slow and choppy.  This first happened while using the selection tool (polygonal lasso), which was lagging behind and making late clicks.  I finished my selection and noticed the cursor in general was slow choppy still.  I saved my work, shutdown PS, then reboot my computer.  I reopen my project, the cursor lag seemed to be gone but the brush tool was not working correctly.  Instead of making smooth burst of color with one click (gradient like), it now looks like 256 4 bit (old nintendo style) bursts.  Or you could say it looks like multiple rings getting smaller and darker, like counting the rings of a tree trunk.
This happens instantly after opening a file of any type and size.  I work with CMYK and 300dpi and while working on a page, this just happened out of nowhere.
I have an ASUS G74SX, i7 CPU, GeForce 560M w/2 gig RAM, 8 gig of SDRAM, 3 each SSD 300gigs (this is basically a 6 month old gaming laptop and has been working fine with PS until now).  I have my PS scratch disk set to my F drive for all art and there is nothing more than 2 gigs of space being used right now.  My RAM used in PS prefs was maxed at 5205k as suggested by the program.
I would post a picture but this forum will not allow a big enough image to show exactly what I am describing.
PS CS6 is fully up to date as well as all drivers for my GPU and the rest of my laptop.
    Thanks
    Josh

I personally like to Crop, and then use PNG for my screen-caps. If I need more images, say to show other Palettes, etc., then I do one each for those shots.
We see a lot of full-screen caps posted, where aggressive JPEG is used, and nothing can be read. That is especially true with images, like Adobe Encore's Flow-chart, where there is a lot of text and linking being shown.
    Just my personal preferences.

  • Choppy video on certain sites/flash players only

I bought an Acer laptop just this week. I've been having issues with video appearing rather choppy, as if looking at a poorly done animated gif. It's not constant, only on certain websites. For example I can watch a video on YouTube as smooth as cable tv but if I try to watch a video on Failblog.org I encounter very choppy video. At first I thought it was perhaps the quality of videos themself on these other sites, so i checked them out on my desktop and they play just fine. I tried disabling hardware accelleration, encounter the problem in both Chrome and IE, and have made sure I'm using the most recent version of flash. I'll post information below regarding my system and flash installation.
    System:
Acer Aspire Laptop Model # 7741Z-4643
    Processor: Intel Pentium CPU p6100 @ 2.00GHz 2.00GHz(DUAL CORE) with 3MB L3 Cache

    Flash:
In Google Chrome it states "You have version 10,2,154,12 installed"
In Internet Explorer it states "You have version 10,2,152,26 installed"
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling as well from the control panel > programs > uninstall. The logo on your test/version page plays fine.
    Protection:
    Malware: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Virus: AVG
I've disabled AVG from running in the background and on startup due to conflicts with malwarebytes and general resource hog issues I've had with it in the past. I've last scanned this morning and came up with no infections with both programs. Both have been updated to the latest libraries available for detection.
Any help I can get would be great and I apprecciate your time.

  • Video Lagging/Choppy videos on Macbook Pro

    Hello,
I am having a problem while watching videos online: video lagging/choppy videos. Sometimes the video is stuck in a certain frame although I still have the sound on the background; sometimes the video slows down completely (frame+sound). It started around one month ago, and exists in several different websites, I couldn`t solve it by myself. I am not very good with computers. I tried to uninstall/reinstall flash player, as well as disable hardware acceleration, and the problem is still there. Also somedays the videos are working fine, and somedays they are all bad independent of websites. I tried to use different browsers (chrome/firefox/safari), but the problem persists.
I am using a Macbook Pro and bought it in the beginning of January this year (right now it is running OS X 10.7.4) with flash player version 11.2.202.235.
I would very much appreciate if you can help me.
    Thanks.

mellskucukoglu, uninstall all adobe products then install Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Reader, Adobe Air, Adobe Shockwave Player. Make sure to select the operating system correctly behind the link. Turn off your antivirus till you finish installation as suggested below the webpage. If it still doesn't work check for OS X 10.7.4 updates.
If it still doesn't work then go for Adobe Live chat in this link http://www.adobe.com/support/chat/ivrchat.html . Sometimes they are busy. If they can't help. Think about any changes that you made before this issue like installaling any new apps. Uninstall them. If it still doesn't work then install Adobe Flash Professional CS 6. After installing check for adobe updates and update them all. It should work at this point.  If not ,watch this

  • Common video dimensions and bit rates for dynamic streaming?

I'm going to be converting my videos to flv and am trying to decide what to use for video dimensions and bit rates.  Some of my users have slow computers and connections so I'm thinking 150 on the low end.
Is there a common practice?  What has worked well for you in the past?

    Hello MrWizzer
I am not sure what FMS version you are currently using.
Well, if you look at the sampe vod folder that ships with FMS4.5, it has files encoded @ 150kbps, 500 kbps, 700 kbps, 1000 kbps, 1500 kbps.
I am sure that all of these files stream perfectly fine given the correct bandwidth environment.
Its totally depend upon the FMS hosting service provider depending upon the user base of a particular provider.
You need to judge what kind of BW is available to your viewers and put the files encoded at appropriate bitrates.
You may also look at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashmediaserver/articles/beginning-fms45-pt06.html for refrences.
