Slow client on new DELL 5.1 server installation

Hi
I'm having some performance (speed) problems on a three user netware
system.
Everything was fine until I replaced an old PC running NetWare 5.0 with
a 'proper' Dell power edge server with SCSI disks etc. Their old
server was running 5.0 and I replaced it with 5.1, fully patched - I
used the 5.1 support pack dated Jan 2004, and as I downloaded this in
August I believe it to have had some thorough testing.
The clients on the machine were old (read very reliable?) - from
w95331e.exe, and worked extremely well with their old ad-hoc 5.0 server
(ie, not a real server but just a PC running a novell OS).
I plugged in the new server, like for like. Did a byte for byte copy
of their apps and all data.
Applications then ran slower than the old machine (fox pro and Sage),
some processes taking 10x as long.
I've tried installing the client that came with the 5.1 disks, older
than 331 - still slow?!
I've tried the most recent client, from 34cln95e, but that didn't
change anything!!
The only way I can get any speed out of the system is to use
Microsoft's client for Netware. Hey presto - fast networking !?
(not a good ad for Novell!?)
I now intend to try client contained in w98332e.exe, (Client32 ver 3.32
English for Windows 9x/Millennium), but feel I am wasting my time.
Site called to day and is demanding that I install the MicroSoft Win98
client for netware as this has been tested on their third machine over
the past few day and they now want it on the other two.

PS: I'll ask Dell too, but I don't hold much hope there - it took
them six months just to get the right version of the operating system
to me - they sent me a five user additive licence three times, now
I've got a three user network with 17 spare connections!? Anyone
want to buy a five user netware licence?

As others noted, it could be an IP vs IPX difference. In particular, IPX
is less sensitive to duplex mixmatches on the NICs and switches.
Did you install to traditional NW volumes or NSS volumes? NSS (at least on
5.x, I haven't tested 6.x) is slower than traditional and has higher
latencies, which is most noticeable on client side database applications
such as those written in FoxPro or MS Access.
The most likely source of problems is the client configuration. See this
link for tips and some tools to isolate the problem.

This page has info on maximizing performance of the server and configuring
it for the type of usage you put on it. In particular, the info about RAM
may be relevant.

  • New Crystal Reports 2008 Server Installation - Unable to log on...

    Hi,
For the first time, I installed Crystal Reports 2008 on a Windows 2008, 64bit server.
When I load up the CMC, I end up getting a server not found error.  I proceeded to load up the CCM, and noticed that Apache and the related logon credentials are working fine.  I see a green arrow next  to the server name.
I click on the "Manage Servers" icon and the servername, user name, and authentication is pre-filled.  I enter in the password and receive the following error:
Unable to log on: Could not connect to server servername.  Please check that the server name is correct, and that the server is running.
Can anyone offer suggestions on how to troubleshoot further?
    Thank You,
    Chris

can you access apache root? try hitting http://servername:8080/
If not is tomcat running in the CCM?

it run ,but i dont want to create another one since it was pretty big and took lot of time to design it
Is there any way i can use the same rdl with that report server ,one of my collegue told that i can do in one way (using  catalog of SQL server 2008 Reporting in sql server 2005 report server database i did'nt get that much as iam not aware of that
catalog stuff .and i tried to configure the report server once again and i am getting this new error

    thnaks in advance

GO TO report server configuration and go to Encryption keys and delete encryption keys and try to run the URL again, it works.
I had SSRS2008 two installations, the second one gave this problem, this solution helped resolve it. Thank you.

  • New Dell Server with OpenManage Essentials adds SQL Server 2012 Native Client to existing SQL Server 2008R2 in SBS 2011

Had to upgrade my server to new Dell T320. Support wanted me to install OpenManage Essentials which unfortunately installed SQL Server 2912 native client. Now I have 2 sqlserv apps running at the same time.
Is there a problem with SBS 2011 Standard running two different SQL Server native clients?
I have no idea why Dell OpenManage did not use the existing 2008R2 native client, but that is the way it is.
Can I combine or upgrade the database so they all use one and not both?
    Thanks
    Gerald Fay

    Hi,
I have asked some who similar the SQL product, in general you can install the different version SQL client on the same operation system, but when the OpenManage Essentials
install a SQL instance on your SQL server, it will automatic upgrade same SQL component to the newer version.
For example, if your SQL server is 2008r2, you install the OpenManage Essentials built-in SQL instance which version is higher(such as 2012), by default it will automatic
upgrade the same SQL component to SQL 2012, I don’t similar with the OpenManage Essentials
tool, I think you can ask DELL® support for the further support.
    Thanks.

  • VMware migration of a VM from a whitebox server to a new Dell server

and Yes I am working on our sales team to convince them of the benefits of a real license!!

    Hi all
I have been tasked to migrate a new client's virtual server. The present server is just a white box with a single 1TB sata hard drive. The new server is a new Dell T430 with 4x1TB drives.
Both are running the free version of ESX 5.5.
Besides doing a vmware convert or downloading it to a hard drive and then uploading it to the new server, does anyone have any ideas?
Is there some way of mounting the SATA drive in the new Dell server and having the other ESX server see that storage to do a copy?
I thought about Veeam but not sure if that will work without the storage APIs.

  • New Server Installation, now client computers can't connect to services. Where to go from here?

    Hello.
I recently had to setup a new Mac Mini Server (Mavericks). We had one previously but one of the raided hard drives failed. No backup.
Our office of 6 Apple MacBook Pros used to connect to all file sharing and calendar services, easily.
On the new Server installation, I added the same users with the same passwords etc. The client computers cannot access calendars, file sharing etc. On the clients, I have opened up System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Options > Network Account Server and added the FQDN of the server, but I get an error ' Unable to add server. Connection failed to the directory server. (2100) '
2 of the clients are on Mountain Lion. The rest are on the latest Mavericks.
I'm a bit lost on where to go from here and would appreciate your help before I wipe everything and start from scratch.
    Thanks.

    Hi Strontium90
Ha! There was a time machine backup, but we had a storm here which rendered it and the server useless. We are such a small team without an 'IT' guy, apart form me as I have a vague interest in all things Apple.
What is your DNS name space?
Do you need the name here?
Do the servers and the client agree on this name?
Not sure what you mean. The domain name works as when I type it into a web browser, I can see the 'Welcome to Server' page.
Did you enable an Open Directory Master?
    Yes. Open Directory is running.
Did you grant the users/group access to the service you are offering?
Yes. All services are checked for each user.
Make sure the user/group is permitted to access your enabled services.
    All allowed, too.
Oh, and implement a backup strategy
Will do, once I sort out this problem. Time Machine and off-site, I think.

  • Vm server install on new dell t410 cant find disks

I am trying to install Oracle VM server on a new dell t410 with a raid1 configured (or i have also tried without it configured) and it just does not seem to recognize the drive.
    I tried alt-f2
    lvm
as it says you can in the install guide but lvm does not seem to run
So far nothing is bringing up the drive info
    Thanks

The simplest solution is, as you suggested, creating an LVM volume group, and create one large lv.

  • Why index creation is slower on the new server?

    Hi there,
Here is a bit of background/env info:
Existing prod server (physical): Oracle 10gR2 10.2.0.5.8 on ASM
    RAM: 96GB
    CPUs: 8
    RHEL 5.8 64bit
    Database size around 2TB
    New server:
VMWare VM with Oracle 10gR2 10.2.0.5.8 on ASM
    RAM 128GB
    vCPUs: 16
    RHEL 5.8 64bit
Copy of prod DB (from above server) - all init param are the same
I noticed that Index creation is slower on this server. I ran following query:
    SELECT name c1, cnt c2, DECODE (total, 0, 0, ROUND (cnt * 100 / total)) c3
FROM (SELECT name, VALUE cnt, (SUM (VALUE) OVER ()) total
              FROM v$sysstat
             WHERE name LIKE 'workarea exec%')
    C1
    C2
    C3
    workarea executions - optimal
    100427285
    100
    workarea executions - onepass
    2427
    0
    workarea executions - multipass
    0
    0
Following bitmap index takes around 40mins in prod server while it takes around 2Hrs on the VM.
    CREATE BITMAP INDEX MY_IDX ON
    MY_HIST(PROD_YN)  TABLESPACE TS_IDX PCTFREE 10
    STORAGE(INITIAL 12582912 NEXT 12582912 PCTINCREASE 0 ) NOLOGGING
This index is created during a batch-process and the dev team is complaining of slowness of the batch on new server. I have found this one statement responsible for some of the grief. There may be more and I am investigating.
I know that adding "parallel" option may speedup but I want find out why is it slow on the new server.
I tried creating a simple index on a large table and it took 2min in prod and 3.5min on this VM. So I guess index creation is slower on this VM in general. DMLs (select/insert/delete/update) seem to work with better elapsed time.
Any clues what might be causing this slowness in index creation?
    Best regards

I have been told that the SAN in use by the VM has capacity of 10K IOPS. Not sure of this info helps. I don't know more than this about the storage.
What else do I need to find out? Please let me know - I'll check with my Sys Admin and update the thread.
    Best regards

  • Server 2012 Essentials - very slow to add new user

Eight month old Dell PowerEdge R320 rackmount server, running Windows Server 2012 Essentials. XEON E5-2400 processor, 16 GB RAM, 6 TB of SATA disks( RAID-1).  "Shared resources' on this server are not all that extensive since there are only six
'shared folders' on this server ... And for certain I am NOT any sort of 'guru' as it would pertain to Windows Server 2012 Essentials, but it seems to me that the fact it takes over 35 minutes to add a single
new user to this server is a bit "unusual", to say the least... As I mentioned, there are only six "shared resource" folders on this server being served from the "DATA" disk that users can access with R/W rights, and all other
resources on this server are marked as 'no access' for our twelve (now thirteen) users.  Does this not seem to be an inordinately long time to add a single new user..?  I have just checked and found a few updates (maybe five) that were 'pending'
a reboot (which it is doing now, as I write this), and I will try adding a new user as a 'test' after this reboot, but - am I wrong?  Doesn't this seem to be an extremely long time just to add a single new user..?

    Hi,
    Thanks for your post.
Please wait for the update installed and reboot, then try to add user to check the result.
Adding a new user did not need much time generally.
    Regards.

  • Oracle VM on New Dell Server

    Hi,
we have a new Dell server with 8*300 GB Disk configured on RAID 10. My plan is to install Oracle VM on it. I would like some recommendation on the ideal Raid Stripe Size can be used.
Can you please give some input on this.
    Thanks,
    Blesson

Depends on what you plan to run on your server. Is it going to be part of a pool with other servers, and use shared storage? Then local disk striping is basically irrelevant. Or if this is going to be used as a single server pool, then you configure the striping as you would for the operating system and applications you run in the guests.

  • Deploying Client from new ConfigMgr Server

We did a side by side upgrade of our ConfigMgr Server.  And for some reason we are getting errors when we try to install our clients.  This doesnt happen to all deployed clients just some of them.
OLD-SMS-01 = is our old 2007 ConfigMgr Server
    NEW-SMS-02 = is our new 2012 SP1 ConfigMgr Server
When we go to the ccmsetup.log on a client that had failed, I see this:
Failed to check url https://OLD-SMS-01.domain.com:443/CCM_Client/ccmsetup.cab. Error 0x80072ee7
    ccmsetup 2/6/2014 3:26:38 PM

I looked all through the Administration to see if there was any trace of this and I am not able to see where this data is set.
    Thank you in advance.

Did you get rid of the boundaries for the old site or cleanup the AD System Management container? Boundaries are stored in this AD container. Thus, if you didn't remove them from the old site and haven't cleraned up the container, you need to go do that
    now.

w/ this latest version, getting MANY "the connection was reset" pages, plus VERY VERY VERY slow loading. I'm running Windows 7 on a new Dell. What is up w/ that?
I don't know how else to phrase that. I'm a pretty good user, but after defragging, backing up, and getting rid of a bunch of files that "may" slow down performance of firefox, the fact is, "the connection was reset" comes up five or six times a day--AND the browser is going slow as molasses. I haven't had this much trouble since before I got my new dell.

hello whatagem123, it is never a good idea to stick with outdated versions of firefox just for the sake of addons, as this will put the integrity of your system and your the personal data on it at risk - there are various [https://www.mozilla.org/security/known-vulnerabilities/firefox.html known security vulnerabilities (some of them highly critical)] that were fixed in later versions!
so please [[Update Firefox to the latest version]] & [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/plugincheck/ update your plugins] (your java plugin has security vulnerabilities that are actively and widely exploited on the web).
afterwards i'd recommend resetting firefox - this will keep your bookmarks and passwords but will get rid of most other customizations. this might well fix both the issues you've described in your question...

  • DataInputStream with slow client side connection

I need to stream some data to client. server pushes all messages once connection is established over internet.
but when internet connection is slow (like wireless). i see lot more messages in receive Queue on client side. then for a brief period of time, server stops sending messages (may be due to socket channel is full or something)
so it looks like application is stealth mode. then all of sudden application starts consuming messages (may be when that channel gets empty)
any idea how to fix this slow connection issue? i don't care if client drops certain messages. how can i flush or empty out that socket channel ?
below is the code snippet that i am using...
    try {
           InputStream is = new URL(streamerUrl).openStream();
           ds = new DataInputStream(new BufferedInputStream(is));
           parseBody(ds);
        } catch (IOException ex) {
                        logger.error(ex.getMessage());
        }

My decision was to send acknowledge and if server side can't get to acknowledge it will skip all new messages. If the server can't get an acknowledgment it can only mean that the connection has failed, which will manifest itself to the server as an IOException: 'connection reset' on a write. The acknowledgement adds nothing except latency and more bandwidth usage.
So why not skip message while network lacking.I agree, but why not use what the network is already telling you, rather than adding more messages and more failure modes? Now it's the client that has to look out for connection resets. You've just moved the problem.

  • VI running very slow in a new PC

    Hello,
I recently changed my development PC, and one of my VIs is running much slower in my new PC. This is strange since the new PC is a bit better. In this PC I have an Intel i5 4210M 2.5GHz CPU, 8Gb of RAM and a disk with 7200RPM and 16MB of cache. The PC I was using before had an older intel i5 3210M CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 5400RPM disk.
In the current project I'm working I'm monitoring some production lines. I'm using Labview 2013 and the DSC module's OPC server to connect to the PLCs on the production line.
In the VI that is slower in the new PC I'm reading about 50 shared variables from the OPC server, I'm registering some data in a MySQL database, datalogging data on the Citadel database and registering alarms. On my older PC each iteration on this VI was taking about 1 second and now is taking more than 10 seconds.
I've noticed that when I run that VI the disk usage gets very high (constantly over 90%), but it's strange if the disk is causing this problem since it is better than the one I had on the older PC. The CPU usage is low (arround 5%) and the memory usage stays arround 30-35%.
Does anyone have any idea what could be happening? I'm getting very frustrated with this problem since the PC is brand new and I wasn't expecting to have a problem like this.

With windows 7 I was having the same problem. I installed windows 8.1 because since I was having some problems with drivers compatibility on windows 7 and I tought that maybe this problem in the execution speed could also be caused by that. But on windows 8.1 there was only a slight improvement - it took close to 20 seconds to execute now it takes 15 seconds, but still not the performance I was having on the previous PC (arround 1 second).
Today I brought both PCs and I'm trying to understand what's different. I've noticed on the windows resource monitor that the write speed on my new PC's disk are lot slower when the VI is running. The disk load goes up to 100% but the write speed seems to be limited to 1MB/s. As for the older PC the disk load stays lower (arround 30-40%) and the write speeds goes up to 5MB/s. I've also ran perfmon but I didn't noticed major differences between when I was running that VI and when I wasn't. I've attached some screenshots from the resource monitor of both PCs. The screenshot that is in portuguese is from the older PC but the fields are in the same positions as in the english version.
So I'm thinking that this must be some problem on my disk confgurations something must be limiting my disk speed to 1MB/s. But when I transfer files on the PC it doesn't seem to have that problem. I only noticed it on that VI...
