Slow computers

I pay $50 a month for my internet and it has gotten slower since i got wifi but this past month it has gotten super slow. Tried restarting and nothing helps. Both computers are slow so i know it's not just my computers.


What speed tier do you subscribe to?
Can you run a speedtest here and tell me what you get?

  • Rikaichan (add-on) doesn't work at my office. It gives this error "Javascript application: the index for one or more dictionaries needs to be created. This may take a while on slower computers". And then the PC freezes. What should I do?

    I'm using Firefox 3.6.17, and have installed Rikaichan 2.02. Once I've installed the Japanese-English dictionary, I then click on Rikaichan to get it started, and it always gives a "Javascript Application" error:

    Boot into your Mavericks Recovery partition by hold down the command and R keys whilst booting. You'll see a screen that looks like this:
    Click on the Disk Utility item to open Disk Utility. You should see your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've changed it) in the column on the left of the screen. Select your boot partition and click on the "Verify" button. Let your Mac do it's thing - if you get green text telling you that everything seems to be OK, then your disk should not be damaged. If, however, you get red text telling you that the disk needs to be repaired, click on the "Repair" button. If the disk can be repaired, you should be good to go. If the disk cannot be repaired then the drive is damaged.
    But before you do anything, make certain that you have backups!!!

  • Testing for slow computers

    "Premature optimization is the root of all evil"
    I keep an eye out for performance, but in general I follow this saying. The problem is, I just had my friend run my program on his computer and saw that what was super-fast on my machine was incredibly slow on his and almost unusable.
    Is there some sort of way for me to simulate having a slow cpu and a slow graphics card so that I can prepare for these types of computers?
    Or is the best way for me to just have another, slower computer on hand to test with?

There's a tendency to give developers skookum computers so they can get things done quickly, and that's a good thing. But as you see, those computers aren't necessarily the best things for that kind of testing. You should be able to get an old piece of junk computer very cheaply if you want to test that way.

  • Does anyone have problems with Network Magic slowing computers down?

      Our company has been using Network Magic for several years without too many problems.  The problem is with some of the recent updates, our Norton Program keeps telling us that Network Magic is slowing our system down.  Things are so slow with almost everything it feels like we are back to dial up internet and the sit and wait game to see files on other computers.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • PRAM and slow computers...

    Hey there I'm doing a little recon for my sister,she is often calling me(because I have a mac too) to ask me what she can do to speed up her computer. I was looking around for her and found a few things but I wanted to see them explained a bit...
    What is PRAM and how would I clear it?
    What other things can I suggest for her?
    I have seen MacJanitor Cache Out X and AppleJack are these worth the dl?
    She thinks the slowness is due to extensive use of Photoshop, art student, but since I am far away from her, different province, I can't really diagnose it myself. So what long distance suggestions can you give?

    Hi Mad-elph
    I disagree that repairing disk permissions would be in any way useful. It is a troubleshooting step, not system maintenance.
    Also, if you look at the link provided by the previous poster you will see what information is contained in PRAM and that clearing it won't help (again, another troubleshooting step).
    Something like Macjanitor or Onyx would be a good download - running the automation mode in Onyx (that is the program I am most familiar with) will blow out some of the dust in the system by running the maintenance scripts.
    Be aware that if you do run the automation, and it is set to delete system/user/kernel caches, you will observe a light system slowdown as the caches are rebuilt.
    There are various ways to enhance the performance of your sister's machine, but we would need to know a little more detail about it. If you can obtain the specification from Apple Menu > About This Mac it would be helpful, especially:
    Processor Type/Speed
    RAM
    Hard Disk (total size and free space)
    Graphics Card
    Operating System Version
    Let us know and it will be easier to define specific steps for optimising performance.

  • A Solution to Slow Computers (People with Gmail)

    As many other people, I noticed a HUGE SLOWDOWN when I installed Mavericks.  I have been trying to figure out what is causing it.  I've used the suggestions that many people have made here and none have helped.
    I noticed from the very first installation of Mavericks that my MAIL app was acting strangely.   I  use GMAIL as my primary email source.  From time to time, I would try to quit MAIL and it would not do it.  I would have to do a FORCE QUIT.  I also noticed that a HUGE NUMBER of emails were being downloaded from Gmail's servers to  the MAIL app.
    So, as a last resort, I quit MAIL and have been leaving it OFF.  I just go on it quickly and then QUIT.
    My system is now running almost normally.  I believe that GMAIL in MAIL is causing the slow downs. 
    Even Safari, that was running so slowly and oftentimes not loading sites, is back to normal.
    So, I hope this temporary solution helps others until the 10.9.1 Mavericks Update comes out.  It appears to me that

    I tried it before I read this. I initiated airplane mode, synced at like 12pm...it backed up for almost an hour BUT it's still syncing (It's 4:07pm now) and it's been on calenders for almost an hour! In my options it's set to only sync calenders from a day old and forward!

  • Video playback on older (slower) computers

    I tested a Flex application I've been working on with my old computer and the playback of audio and video using the VideoPlayer component is essentially non-functional, even after waiting for the source to load completely. The computer in question:
    mac OS 10.4.11, 667MHz PowerPC (PowerBook) 1MB L3 cache, with 768 MB SDRAM
    This is undoubtedly an old setup, however it does play most video content that's on the web, so it does raise concern for me. I know there's not a definitive answer, but I'm just looking for some general feedback as to wether or not I should be concerned with this lack of functionality and if so, if there are any suggestions about addressing this issue.

  • Norton anti-virus slows down the start up time in Windows Vista

    Hi,
    please help, i am being driven to distraction by the slow start up time of my laptop.
    I've only had it for a few weeks and don't use it for anything beyond producing word documents etc.
    It has gradually been getting slower on startup and i suspect it has something to do with the Norton anti-virus software on it and the updates for norton that i have downloaded (thinking that this was the right thing to do).
    Looking at the problems and solutions log on the computer the date that it really started to slow down coincides with downloading a norton update, which i have been unable to uninstall to check if this really is the problem.
    Further i have tried doing a System Restore, my laptop was not able to complete.
    I am stuck on the DOS screen for 10 mins with the message:
    PXE-E32 FTFP open timeout
    I have no idea what this means but the Problems and Solutions log says something about a system hang?
    I have looked on the web for other anti-virus software and they all seem to have one problem or another and slow computers down on startup.
    Does anyone know of a solution or do i just have to make a cup of tea when i switch my computer on and lace it with vodka till it has booted up completely!
    I am a novice when it comes to using computers so would welcome any non-technical advice.

    I would like to add some words about my experience using the Symantec Norton Antivirus software.
    I have used this software 3 year long. It was great because it supports one of the best virus filtering options BUT it really slow downs the operating system.
    I didnt use it on with Vista preinstalled notebook but on Win XP and I have to say that the notebook boot process was halted for about 30sec-1min till the whole parts of Norton Antivirus software has started It was very annoying
    However, I switched to AntiVir. This is software described by marina4000 and Im really happy because the boot performance increased.
    So finally I would also recommend removing this Symantec Norton Antivirus software and to switch to the other free AntiVir software ;)

  • LR3.3 Slows Computer...even after closing

    I know there have been a lot of threads about LR3 slowing computers, but none seem to address my specific issue so I thought I would post.
    Here's the deal...when performing a JPEG export my entire system slows down. Web pages load slowly, the mouse jumps around, etc. It essentially makes my computer unusable while the export is happening (which is really unfortunate considering how long it takes to do JPEG exports...and yes...I am aware of doing batch exports to speed things up). But what's even more odd is that once the export is done and Lightroom is closed, my computer is just as slow. I have to restart my system after a JPEG export in order to get it moving at proper speed again.
    A few more details: LR3 works great the rest of the time (up until I start the export). No delays, no sluggishness. No other program causes a problem like I am experiencing...only LR3.

    You don't have to disable your Anti-Virus, just go in and exclude the LR catalog folder, and, if you're comfortable doing it, your image file folders, from the Real-Time protection.  That won't solve it but it will cut down some overhead.
    Another part of the disk activity going on after you shut down LR is due to Windows search indexer.  Go to the properties of the folder where you have the LR catalog and turn indexing off.  If you don't need it, also turn indexing off on the image file folders you are doing any big exports to.
    I found that helps a bit on my Vista 64bit system.
    Beyond that, the suggestion re. Task manager is also a good one, but if you want to dig into this in more detail, download Procmon.exe (Process Monitor) from Microsoft.  It will show you every file and process that is in use.
    Sorry, I don't have any equivalent suggestions for the MAC folks.

  • Slow down while using aperture

    While using aperture the system become very slow.it takes much time to zoom in & out..to open the adjustment menus
    is there any way out??

    Aperture is a heavy pro graphics app that is very demanding of hardware. Your Mac's CPU, GPU, i/o and RAM are all limiting to Aperture so we need to do what we can to optimize. Some steps:
    • Set Previews to only be built manually, and only tell Aperture to build Previews when you are not otherwise editing in Aperture. I suggest setting the size of Previews to be the pixel dimensions of your display.
    • Keep the internal drive underfilled for speed, which sooner or later usually requires using a Referenced-Masters-Library with Masters on external drives. Back up originals before importing into Aperture or any other images app.
    • The Aperture Library should be on an internal drive.
    • Turn off Share Previews with iLife and iWork.
    • Remember that HDs slow as they fill and keep the internal drive underfilled. Approx. 70% full _maximum_ is a good guideline.
    • If page outs increase significantly during operation, max out RAM and/or try to run Aperture by itself. On my C2D MBP with its max of 3 GB RAM I always did a restart prior to a heavy Aperture session to clear any memory leaks and make sure no other apps were open. Browsers in particular will often suck RAM Aperture would otherwise be using.
    IMO all Aperture users who can should routinely bump RAM to at least 8 GB.
    • Some users have observed that it can take a new Aperture installation time (weeks) to stabilize on slow computers. So do not panic; and allow Aperture to continue background work by not fully shutting down the computer.

  • Burns slow, video comes out green

    Hi Folks,
    I'm new to burning DVDS... but I'm not new to computers. When I load everything up on iDVD, it seems fine and normal.
    I burn my DVD (which takes hours to encode) and then turn it on to watch. The title screen plays perfect, but as soon as I play the actual video, it plays an hour of green with no audio.
    They are .avi files I've loaded onto iDVD, if that makes any difference.
    Any ideas?

    4 hours to encode isn't bad - in the early days of iDVD with slower computers, we would let things encode over night.
    I'm very suspicious of your AVI content. AVI is just a 'wrapper' that can contain content encoded by many different means - not all of which are iDVD compatible.
    Open the file with the Apple Quicktime Player and do a WINDOW>SHOW MOVIE INSPECTOR

  • Video/animation is slow on iOS (how can I optimize it?)

    I am trying to put a 15 seconds video with alpha channel in an application for iOS with flash CS5.5, but it is slow.
    I tried with the GPU acceleration, I tried to use the old resolution (420x360) but it is stull slow.
    I tried with an FLV, with a sequence of images, or even with bitmap traced images, but it is still slow.
    Is there a way to make a smooth animation (with alpha channel) from a movie or a sequence of pictures in an app?

    The native controls won't play the video with alpha over your other stage things. GPU would be way too demanding (every frame would be transferred to the GPU). CPU would work, but the frame rate with AIR 2.6 may not be hight enough. If it isn't, try with AIR 2.7 (look around the forum for discussions on how to ge tthat going).
    Don't forget though that playing alpha video is demanding, and devices are like slow computers, you may not get the performance you want.

  • E1500 Using wireless for 3 computers. 1 has superfast internet, the other 2 are superslow

    I have 3 laptops connecting wirelessly to this router.  One is running at 18Mbps, the other two at 0.4Mbps.   the internet setting are the same and the security is the same (WPA2-Personal with AES encryption).  One of the slow computers is brand new and WAY faster than my "fast internet" computer.  The other is about the same as the "fast internet" computer.  I updated the  I connected the new computer to the router tusing an ethernet cable and it had superfast internet.  I redid the Cisco connect on each computer, but it didnt change anything.  
    Why is it so slow wirelessly?    Please help.  Thanks!

  • Problems concerning sonata playlists and freevo cover art

    Hi!
    I'm setting up a media center PC and I'm having some problems with the playlists created by sonata. Another problem I have is not getting freevo to download cover art.
    First: When ever I try to make a playlist through the "Current" tab in Sonata it creates a m3u file with every song that's listed in the current window. I'm used to being able to pick one or a couple of songs and then adding it a specified playlist. Is this impossible in sonata? And if I try to play the m3u file created (the one with every song listed) through freevo I get a message that the directory is empty. What am I doing wrong??
    Second: I'm having big problems getting freevo to download cover art to my music. I can download info on movies from imdb, but info for the music doesn't work. I store the cover art downloaded by sonata in the different album folders and these covers show up in freevo. But if I have to play every new song i download first in sonata to get the cover art working in freevo I'll go crazy. It's supposed to work the same way in freevo as in sonata isn't it???
    It also seems that mplayer can't play m3u files. Using the mentioned sonata made m3u file in mplayer does nothing. Mplayer starts but nothing happens.
    My goal is to be able to make playlists through sonata and then play these lists using freevo. I don't want to get up from the couch.

    It's clearly not impossible, just different than you expect. Create your playlist as you want it to appear in the Current tab (meaning don't dump every single song from your library in there, just the ones you want) and then save the playlist.
