Slow Connection that sometimes drops

Office: I have Airport Extreme BS, sim. dualband -n connected to a modem thorugh Ethernet. Set to create a wireless network
Home: In a 40 meters distance from the office I have placed the Time Machine (also the latest model) that backes up the Mac Mini server a work. There is a visual between the AEBS and the TC.
The TC is set top extend the office wireless network.

The connection does not seem stable. Sometimes the connection drops out, causing the backup to fail.
Would it do any good to buy an outdoor repeater placing it on the roof of the office building?
I have another wireless network at home. Could that be intefering with the first one? -And how can that be prevented?

On which device do you see that value? It's fairly low and doesn't give you much spread over the probable noise level.
Launch AirPort Utility. Put the AirPort Extreme into "manual setup" mode. Pull down the "Base Station" menu and select "Logs and Statistics". Select the "Wireless Clients" tab. Note the values for "Signal" and "Noise" for the Time Capsule, perhaps identified as "Wireless Extender". Use this discussion post to evaluate the quality of the connection:

I'm not familiar with those. You might be able to improve the connect by moving or reorienting either or both stations. You might also try using a different channel or band. In the 5 GHz band try channels 149 and up. In the 2.4 GHz band try channels 1, 6, or 11.

It could be interfering. One of the "stumbler" utilities could help you investigate that. Switching channels can help avoid interference.

Spent hours on with customer service to no help!
FIOS works great and fast exploring and browsing the internet but beginning to today for no apparent reason on every computer on my network using MAC's every download is SLOW. For instance 500mb take 2 hours+ when normally they take 2 minutes to download. Also, every 1 of 2 downloads stop and don't even finish.
Any ideas or suggestion will be incredibly grateful!!!!

Is video streaming from various websites also affected? How about uploads?

    > what kind of forum is this? no help for more then one 1 week , more then 10 days now ?
What are you expecting? This is a user to user forum if someone would like to help you then he will post in your thread.
In most cases such themes has been discussed a lot of time here maybe you should not wait only for someone but should use an advanced search option and could search and read in similar threads for possible solutions
    Regarding your issue:
    > i do have the latest updates and still nobody from you tried to help me to get a fix , why dont you guys belive it? when i said look at google.com and write windows 7 wireless probblem or slow down my wireless, this is a KNOWN issue with windows 7 .
Firsty you said that you are sure it's Win 7 issue
    >i have asked around everywhere and they all say it is NOT windows 7 issue it must be the manufacter driver issue .
Now you are saying it;s notebook issue....
So what is your possition now????
How it could be a manufacturer issue if the speed is faster using WIn XP??? For me it make no sence...
However, I googled a little bit an found this:
Tweaking Windows 7 for Faster Online Connections
    http://www.brighthub.com/computing/windows-platform/articles/58522.aspx
You can also try to speed up the IE 8
For that use the command: regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
This should be typed in RUN
    Then reboot the notebook.

  • Since upgrading to Yosemite I am getting frequently "safari can't open the page (blank) because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection this sometimes occurs when the server is busy. wait and then try again"

Since upgrading to Yosemite on my iMac I am frequently getting "safari can't open the page (blank) because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection this sometimes occurs when the server is busy. wait and then try again". This is with both a WiFi and Ethernet connection. The server is working fine from other devices using WiFi onto it such as iPhones, iPads, MacBook (which is also on Yosemite) so don't believe its an issue with the server.
I am also noticing page load very slowly when this problem is not occurring.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • Mavericks install incomplete. No Apple installers on HD. Will I be able to upgrade to Yosemite and will it fix all that didn't install with Mavericks upgrade? Very slow connection speeds 30 hrs to download Mavericks. Tried re-install; no help/

Ever since upgrade to Mavericks I have been having problems which are too numerous to mention. I finally found a program from a UCBerkley professor called Pacifier which indicated 4000+ of 400,000+ files and folders did not install. I was unable to go further to try to fix everything because Pacifier can't find ANY Apple installers on my HD. It recommended I download the Mavericks installer without reinstalling to continue; however, after having done so (very slow connection; takes 30 hours to download) and although the installer appears in apps while downloading it disappears and NO Apple installer packages can be found on my hard drive. I tried to download Yosemite once and it indicated my system wasn't eligible for the upgrade. Its' download time was similar to Mavericks; 28+ hours.
    I am using a Macbook Pro mid-2012 version OS X 10.9.5 (13F34); Processor 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5; Memory  4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3; Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB.
Regardless of how many files and apps I remove my memory is being eaten up to the point I can hardly do anything at all. There are no civil words for how frustrated I am. Someone please help me.
    Thanks,
    JJ

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

  • Have a MacMini that is dropping NFS Share connections, Using cifs://servername/path however the NFS Share is dropped everyday without fail.

Have a MacMini that is dropping NFS Share connections, Using cifs://servername/path however the NFS Share is dropped everyday without fail.  Is there a better way to setup this share?  I've got 5 other Macs that use the same NFS Share and none of them are dropping the shared connection.  This is on OSX 10.9.x Maverick.

cifs:// is not NFS cifs:// is effectively SMB i.e. Windows filesharing, NFS is Unix filesharing, furthermore cifs:// is a way of forcing Mavericks to use SMB version 1 protocol. Normally you would use smb:// which will default to trying to use SMB version 2 protocol.
Saying all that, SMB version 1, SMB version 2, and NFS should all normally work fine. It is possible that the server may be configured to disconnect idle users although one would expect this to happen with other users as well. It is perhaps more likely that your problem Mavericks Mac maybe going to sleep periodically, while asleep the connection to the server maybe being lost. Apple's own server software has specific cleverness to allow clients to sleep and resume their connection when they wake.
Therefore it might be worth checking your Energy Saver settings on this Mac and disabling computer sleep.

  • TS3274 I have an iPad 2 that was dropped and the glass broke.

I have an iPad 2 that was dropped and the glass broke around Christmas break.  I took it to a local computer repair company and they changed the glass.  However, ever since that time I have had some problems with the wifi.  I do not have the range I once had? For example I can walk out of the room that my verizon jetpack is in and loose connection.  I have also had issues with my Keynote presentations loosing connectivity to Apple TV through the blue tooth.  Q What are my options beside getting a new iPad?

Some iPad users have been able to revive their dropped iPad. Turn the iPad over and give it a HARD SLAP on the back. May take several slaps.

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Yet another BtBroadband user with slow connection....

    Hi all.
I've been having this problem for over a month now. Just before xmas our internet connection went down.
I phoned Bt, went through all the usual tests to be told there was nothing wrong with them and it was my equipment. Ok, no problem, I went out and bought a new router, got it home, plugged it in, still no internet.
Phoned Bt again, spoke to different person at callcenter, went through all the usual tests to be told that, yes, there was a problem with the line and to give it a few days for them to sort out. I gave it a few days and, amazing, the internet came back on. Problem was it was very slow. Ok, I thought, new modem, fixed connection, maybe I need to give it a few days to speed up. It's been a month now and it's gotten slower. So slow infact that when I ran the Bt Speedtester it said that my download speed was 59kps. This was the same speed I was getting back in '97 with my old dial-up modem (ah the memories...).
Anyway, called Bt again, explained all the above and was directed to thier online guide for improving the connection speeds, not very helpfull. Prior to the line problems in december, I was getting speeds up 21000kps. The line was rated for speeds between 4000-21000kps. My property is less than a 1km from the exchange, my router is connected to the main socket and I didn't have any problems prior to the line problems last year.
I have been searching through the previous posts on this forum and can see many other people with similar issues. One post stated that, because of thier line problems Bt had downgraded thier bandwith while the problem was dealt with, but had forgotten to increase it back to normal speed once it had been sorted.
This could be the issue with my connection and if any of the moderators are out there, could this be looked into, it would be deeply appreciated.
My Btspeedtester results and modem stats are as follows:
Download speedachieved during the test was - 59 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 100-250 Kbps.
     Additional Information:
     Your DSL Connection Rate :286 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 888 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
The throughput of Best Efforts (BE) classes achieved during the test is - 0.64:11.33:89.14 (SBE:NBEBE)
These figures represent the ratio while sententiously passing Sub BE, Normal BE and Priority BE marked traffic.
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 728 Kbps
     Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 888 Kbps
    Router:
    Type     Interleave Path
       Status     SHOWTIME
    Downstream     Upstream
          Data rate(Kbps)
    286Kb     888Kb
       Noise Margin
    21     14
       Output power(dBm)
    0     257
       Attenuation(dB)
    21     7
I hope someone can help. Thanks in advance.

"If line instability is shown to stabilise normally the exchange equipment will remove the banding however on some occasions it does not release, and bt can release it manually but they like to see hub stats that show that during the line has been stable for a minimum of 5days but 10 is prefered" I'm not sure whose brainwashed you with this stuff, however. FaCT: BT retail complain to BTw about stuck banded profiles, and yes they can reset the INP, but if the line characteristics don't improve, it goes back to where it was. They also operate to strict protocol, and don't put lightweight preference on whether its seen a fixed rate at 5 days or 10. Truth is if the line is seeing high noise margin and not improving, it has a problem, and often can't be fixed, or take advantage of 21CN. Or sometimes it can be fixed, by the customer, if they choose to, or are capable of. It's not in BT's remit to fix home induced noise, but it is for the line, if its possible. They (BTw) can change any workiing parameter they see fit on DLM, but the main reason for it, is to run in AUTO. In other words, they don't do it for all and sundry, or at the drop of a hat, without good reason. Hence, they don't set "preference" for seeing stable connections. They tend to let the physics do its job.

  • Slow connection speed on new laptop - BT Hub3

    Hello,
i recently bought a new laptop and since i started using the internet on it I have some speed problems. I explain below.
My laptop is new (samsung with windows 7 home premium SP1 64-bit version), i bought it about a month ago and after using it, sometimes I noticed a slow internet connection. Sometimes it got very slow and the pages couldn't be loaded. On a few occasions my connection gets lost for seconds but that doesn't happen to my other old laptops!
I also have 2 other laptops with no connection problems and tried to see what could be the problem.
My wireless router is BT hub3 and seems to be OK and gives to the old 2 laptops its maximum speed about 6-7 mbs.
I then compared the three laptops' settings and what I observed was that my new laptop had a low speed at the connection status window (control panel > netw. & internet > netw. & sharing center > connection status), when i click on the name of my connection and check its status i find that: the speed is usually 18-24 Mbps. It also fluctuates over time, sometimes it gets up to 54 mbps other times down to 11 mbps. I found really strange that my 2 old laptops have a stable speed of 54 mbps when i check the same connection status. With the new laptop my internet doesnt get its maximum speed, when the laptop's speed is down to 18 mbps I run an online speedtest and get 4-5 Mbps instead of 6-7 with the 54 mbps, as the old 2 laptops do.
I used to have connection problems with my old router (BT Hub2) some time ago, so I know about removing any other interference (currently i have no tv on, the microwave is not near the router, i use the least busy wireless channel and tried to place the laptop near the router but it's not much better).
Something else to notice is that I get the same problem when my new laptop is the only one working, with the other two the old ones being switched off. I haven't checked that several times, it might be worse when the new laptop is working along with one of the old ones but i don't really think that matters.
My new laptop uses a network adapter Broadcom 802.11n and the old 2 laptops have an Atheros AR5007EG. At another online forum I asked the same question they told me to try and change the radio type of my router to b/g instead of b/g/n, as the new laptop could be trying to connect on n speed but gets affected by the old ones who connect to the b/g type. I am not sure that could help as my laptop is brand new and should be compatible to the bt hub3 router using the new 802.11n system.
Can someone give some help with my problem? Even if i can't solve the problem I would like to have a feeling of the problem being a laptop problem or just incompatibility of my laptop to the router?? If it's a laptop problem I should consider asking for a replacement or repair.
Thanks very much for any help!

thanks for the answer, coming back to my problem...
I have tried switching to 802.11b/g, i see some improvement but this is happening occasionally. my speed is up to 5 mbs when my old laptops have the proper 7 mbs speed.
what is still happening is my connection status speed on my laptop shows 54 mbps for some time and then drops to 18 mbps. it also generally fluctuates and is not stable at 54 mbps as with my old laptops. when it's down to 18 mbps the speedtest result is 5 mbs. my old laptops (which are older technology after all..) always get to the 7mbs speed which is what I pay for.
i am not sure what the connetion status speed on my laptop should be, why it is not stable as with my old laptops and why I am not getting a stable proper speed of 7 mbs with my new laptop. could it be a hardware issue? What other possible reasons for that problem could be? as I said above no other devices are near my router and I use the inssider software to find the less busy channel.

  • Slow Connection

Hi, i have just recently started experiencing a slow adsl connection. For 5 years i have had no real problems except random diconnections, until recently. For the last week my connection has dropped from a 1500kb/s connection to roughly a 256k connection. All telstra have to say is it seems fine on their end, when clearly it is not on my end. I have swapped modems same problem, checked all settings on he modem, until now has worked all worked fine. Have a speed tested over and over, even ping is higher than usual, in its current state the connection speed is unusable as i am a gamer and latency is too high to enjoy gaming. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. I am using a netgear modem, on an adsl2, 200gb plan.

hi, I am unable to test the phone to hear for a crackle as i do not own one, i only have the modem connected to the line and that is it.I would say the modem is probably at least 2 years old now. And before you ask, cause i asked telstra the same question, it has not been slowed for any reason, not for over usage or un paid bills. I first thought this cause it is running at 256k, which is the slowed speed, but they said they did not slow it. I have spoken to them a few times now, and so far they said they would call me back after 8 hours, which didn't happen, and then they said they are still looking into it.In the past i have had drop out issues, which would occur like every 3 months or so, i would contact telstra and it would fix until it started again. The frustrating thing is every time i call, they always say, seems no problem here must be your end. And everytime they fix it without ever having to visit my premises. So again the connection is also dropping out and is slow, i did try another modem, and it suffered the same slow speeds. So here i am waiting again on telstra to do something.

My connections are always dropping since I bought the router. Even when I am close to the router the connection is still slow. I keep my PC optimized always so I have ruled out the laptop. Are there any setting changes that I might try? I use my wireless connection only for my laptop.
    Here are the stats:
    WRT54GX2 - Firmware 1.01.18
Not sure what version I have (ver2 or ver1)
    Connection Type - PPPoE
    NAT - Yes
    Unique SSID
    G-only
    Channel - 11
    Broadcast - NO
    Security Mode - WPA/WPA2
    MAC filtering - YES
    Basic Rate - set#2
    Trans Rate - AUTO
    Beacon Interval - 100
    DTIM - 1
    Frag Thres - 2346
    RTS Thres - 2347
    Laptop - IBM Thinkpad Z60M w/Atheros card
    Thanks in Advance!

I used to recommend that "SSID Broadcast" be disabled for security reasons.  But newer cracking methods have made this old trick practically worthless.  So set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.  You security comes from using WPA/WPA2 and a strong password.
Windows XP requires a patch to properly run WPA2. Go to Microsoft Knowledge base, article ID=893357 and it will direct you to the patch.
Sadly, the patch is not part of the automatic Windows XP updates, so lots of people are missing the patch.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
If the above does not correct your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If you are still having trouble, download and install (or re-install) the latest firmware for your router.
    Hope this helps.

  • Airport will not turn back on after waking up, slow connections

    So...
Occasionally when I wake my iMac (2.8 GHz aluminum running 10.5.5 and all other updates) up from being asleep my Airport turns off by itself. No matter how many times I click to turn it on it never comes back on. Logging out does nothing, relaunching Finder does nothing. The only way I have found to fix it is to shut down or restart it. Oh, I am connecting to an older b/g Airport Express.
I assumed this was my only issue until I looked at all the reports of slow connection speeds. I realized that things can get very slow sometimes, but my connection bars in the little Airport icon never go down, they stay at a full signal.
And I can't video chat in iChat. With anyone using anything. Go figure.

For the time being I think I'm just going to plug my modem directly into the ethernet port. I can't stand that this ******** is happening with a brand new iMac when I just got done dealing with a fried iMac G5. Is Apple ever going to make another iMac that doesn't have something wrong with it?
If anyone knows of any fixes or other helpful information I would greatly appreciate it.

  • High Packet Loss, High Ping and Slow Connection Ov...

    Hi There,
I have been a customer with the BT unlimited broadband package for a little under two years and up until recently have had no real issues with the service. This was until around 3/4 weeks ago I noticed that the internet was very slow and certain online games or applications like Netflix would lose all of its quality or stop completely. At first I thought nothing of it and simply reset my BT Home hub router, and sure enough everything was back to normal. However after around 2-3 hours of moderate use (gaming online or watching Netflix) the problem surfaced again.
Now I am lucky if I can get the entire way through a 40 minute TV episode before the quality drops and/or the service requires buffering. I have already contacted BT via the helpline and the service lady ran through the obligatory steps (turn off, wait 5 minutes, reset the home hub etc.) but she failed to understand that although rebooting the home hub does alleviate the problem initially, the symptoms of a slow connection, high packet loss and high ping always return within an hour.
Four the last couple of weeks I have been trying to investigate the problem myself and I have done the following things:
Tested the line using the master socket (no difference)
Opened the ports on my firewall within the home hub (no difference)
Directly wired in the computer instead of relying on the wifi (no difference)
Tested for interference from neighbours wifi using inSSIDider office (it wasn’t, operating on different channels)
Switched every device that requires internet off apart from the PC (no difference)
So with all that in mind I am fairly confident that it is nothing within my house that has caused a significant reduction in internet quality.
Now I have tried my best to display the problem I am having by recording the connection quality for the last 24 hours. The table below represents the condition and quality of the connection after leaving it a period of time without resetting:
    ADSL Line Status
    Connection Information
    Line state:
    Connected

And here is a result of the ping and packet loss during this time:
Now I immediately reset the home hub after running that test and ran the test again. These are the results I a achieved within 2 minutes of internet connectivity:

What is causing this poor quality in connection and what can be done to rectify the problem?
Thank you for your response in advanced.

Thank you for you quick reply, I have just moved my hub to the master socket again and re-run the test and I seem to be getting the same results.

I have also checked if the bell wire was attached and it is not. My socket is of the new type with the inclusion of an inductor on the faceplate. My ADSL filters and modem cable already have the middle connecting pins removed so I don’t think it is a wiring problem, at least in my apartment anyway. I have also searched for problems with the exchange and they are showing green for my area. (Liverpool Central)
I have just rang the quiet line and I do not appear to have any noise on the line. However, all I have is a cordless phone and I know that is not ideal for determining noise due to the radio frequency interfering with the phone speaker.
Again thank you for you time on this issue.

  • Very slow connection Airport Extreme

    Hi,
I'm running tiger 10.4.11 on macbook.
I've had major issues with the slow connection on my Airport extreme. based on the speedtest.com (i have time warner cable modem) i have 20meg download, 7ms ping, ang about 500k upload speeds.
But sometimes it takes 20 seconds to load a page like yahoo.com, and at times it just hangs. I updated the driver and admin utility last week, but the same problem persists.
any thoughts or solutions would be much appreciated.

    - i checked under develop menu of my safari, but i dont see the "show network timeline"
Don't dwell on the issue. It would be helpful to know what Safari (or Firefox) is spending so much time to load, but that won't solve the problem. What version of Safari are you running anyway? The latest one works fine with Tiger, in fact it's the fastest version yet. I recommend it. Here's the link: http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
One thing is certain - you ought not to use Airport Admin Utility any more. Download and install Airport Utility. Earlier versions "may not offer expected features or may not be able to configure your hardware properly." You might find Airport Utility will offer a firmware upgrade for your Extreme. Install it.
Once all your equipment and software is updated, then let's find out what's causing your slowness.

  • Very slow connection after phone line repair

I had my phone line repaired yesterday with new cabling and new BT box for phone and computer. My phone is fine, but the hub for my broadband does not appear to be ok.  the phone symbol on the hub did not light up at all  this morning, and after restarting the hub and going back to default settings it is now glowing orange only.  It was ok yesterday after being fixed. Very slow connection now. Should i keep  everything on  to see if it will right itself, or re-start yet again?
I have been looking on BT's options for fixing but can't seem to find anything. the connections in my area are fine so it can't be an outside fault

Which home hub do you have? Did you recently re-contract or change your package, as that will affect your hub phone.
As for the speed issue, it should get better if you leave it alone.
