Slow cpu after new SEcurity UPdate

i installed the newest security update on friday and ever since then my mini has been giving me heck. spinning beachballs abound. almost every app has a distinguished pause before loading. safari is definitely slower at handling incoming images, text, whatever. oh yeah the biggest pauses seem to occur when a program attempts to access a folder on my hard drive.
anybody else experiencing these problems?
any possible fixes? (please do not say repair disks)
any way of taking away this security update? -truthfully i would rather have a well functioning computer than be "secure"-

I am also seeing this, with initial onset of symptoms correlating with installing the latest security update. Boot goes quickly until it gets to "Login window starting", whereupon it stays there for over 2 minutes. It takes 30 seconds to open a finder on the drive and another 30 seconds for that window to display its contents. Switching focus between applications and pulling down menus takes seconds, though the application processing itself appears zippy.
iostat reports the cpu remaining about 98% idle and little disk activity.
This suggests to me that there is some problem in either the window manager or its communication with applications.

• Slow mac after latest security update!!!

So I updated my macbook pro running 10.5.5 to the latest security update and now everything has slowed down! Now I get a beach ball for 5-10 seconds every time I try to open a program, go to a web page, save a file, etc. Is anybody else having this problem???

Hi nerowolfe,
Yes, rest assured you are not alone in your post-update slowdown problems.
I ran back to the steely, solid prowess of Tiger after Leopard indicated it preferred to just sit in the tree sleeping and occasionally falling out. We'll put Leopard down to experience. (The lesson being, if you're embarking on a project, let your developers do the job. Don't re-deploy or scatter your developers mid-way onto more commercial gadgets).
It's a shame but there's now a definite trepidation that comes with OS X software updates. The very rate at which we're being force fed them speaks for itself. Most of the time, I find that they introduce so many other issues that increments in numbers means heartache, searching for fixes, restoration and forgetting the experience. Until the next update, which is the next lap of this downward spiralling track we seem to be on. Do you remember when you could concentrate on your tasks, and not the operating system? (It's becoming difficult).
As for practical solutions nerowolfe, up to now, repairing HD permissions using the OS X inbuilt features or using Onyx has usually done the trick. But neither seem to make a blind bit of difference in the wake of this latest update.
Does anyone else have any practical solutions?
Does anyone know if it's possible to bypass updates or remove installed updates?

• Error: (Ilegal operation on Wrapped Native Prototype Object) after new security update

I have Firefox 22 installed on a HP Presario Quad 64, running Windows 7 Home Version. Firefox had been running and updating well until I received the latest Security Update (20130618035212) released on the 3rd of June, 2013, and it installed today. After installation the Error: Illegal Operation on Wrapped Native Prototype Object) Pops up several times when first opened, and once or twice on every operation I do, on any page thereafter. I don't know what the reason for this error, or what the update may be badly interacting with. I noticed that there seems to be no way of selectively removing a security update from within Firefox it's-self, can I remove it from windows Add/Remove to see if that's the cause instead of removing the Firefox it's self and re-installing. I haven't had a problem with Firefox for such a long time now that I became far too relaxed in my security of it, that I have to admit it caught me off guard. Any help, or information would be fantastic.
Sincerely
Rick M.

Hello,
'''Try Firefox Safe Mode''' to see if the problem goes away. Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
'''''If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one. Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.''
''When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help other users who have the same problem.''
Thank you.

• Trouble sending emails after new security update download

I recently downloaded the newest security update from Apple on to my Macbook PRO and started having trouble sending out emails. I have to shut down my computer and restart everytime I need to send one out. It has also effected Safari and made it incredibly slow. I believe it is that update because I have also just updated my PowerBook G4 at my work and am know experiencing problems there too. I thought my troubles at home were because I had switched from Roadrunner to Verizon for my service. But I haven't changed anything at my work other than that download. Is anyone else having these problems? Does anyone have a solution to fix them?

• Super slow internet after Sept security update for OS 10.4

I updated my computer last week with the Sept security update (for OS 10.4) and now my computer has come to a crawl when using the internet. My wife's PC still zips through the internet without problems. It's not the router causing the problem.

HOLY MOTHER$%&*$& SH*& and other various expletives. I have been pulling my hair out for a week trying to figure this out. I had advice to change my router security from WPA to WEP, turning off the Ipv6 configuration, you name it.. I tried it and this worked like a charm! My internet is blazing again! Come to think of it, could this be the reason that about a month ago I would go to trusted websites I have been using for years and when I would click on links it would redirect me to all kinds of various websites that had nothing to do with what I was looking for. It was to the point where when I would click on a link I would look at the bottom left of the window (firefox) and it would always start with the same IP and I could tell it was doing that redirection thing.
Anyway, BDAqua.... THANK YOU!!!

• All application slow to molasse after Installing Security-Update 2010_007

After installing security update, ALL applications, all commands in X11 had response times ALL key strokes of the order of seconds to minutes with >93% of system CPU idle. Console displays the message below ever 60-70 seconds.
11/11/10 4:25:36 PM updatedyld_sharedcache[12] for arch=i386 failed: read failure copying dylib errno=5 for /System/Library/Frameworks/Accelerate.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/vecLib.fr amework/Versions/A/libLAPACK.dylib while copying /System/Library/Frameworks/Accelerate.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/vecLib.fr amework/Versions/A/libLAPACK.dylib to shared cache
The solution is a modification of this link
http://www.macosxhints.ch/forums/showthread.php?t=15517
Basically, the offending file /System/.../LibLAPACK.dylib is moved from the system directory to a current directory, e.g.,
sudo mv /System/Library/Frameworks/Accelerate.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/vecLib.fr amework/Versions/A/libLAPACK.dylib .
and then back to the original directory, e.g.,
sudo mv libLAPACK.dylib /System/Library/Frameworks/Accelerate.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/vecLib.fr amework/Versions/A/libLAPACK.dylib
Problem solved without reboot as system immediately returns to normal. Why would a security update from Apple cause this?

• After applying Security Update 2006-001 can't launch Office X apps

I noticed that, after applying Security Update 2006-001, I can't launch Microsoft Word nor Excel nor Power Point (Office X, 10.1.6 updated). If I double click the app icon, select and try to open from File menu or try to launch it from the Dock, I get the message "The app has unexpectedly quit". This does not affect Entourage so far. I can open existing files double clicking on their icons and, once the app is running, create new files from menu bar. Repaired permissions, checked for corrupted preferences files or templates but to no avail.
Can anybody help?
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   512 MB RAM

DivX Doctor is a freeware I had downloaded a few days before applying Security Update 2006-01 (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/4683). It certainly was responsible for my problems with Office X apps because, as I said, they completely disappeared as soon as I got rid of it.
I hadn't the memory problems you mentioned (I've applied also Security update 2006-02 without problems).
Don't know if this can help, but you might want to give a try to Disk inventory X (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14393)
Disk Inventory X is a disk usage utility for Mac OS X. It shows the sizes of files and folders in a special graphical way called "treemaps".
If you've ever wondered were all your disk space has gone, Disk Inventory X will help you to answer this question.
Once DiskWarrior fixed a problem with free hard disk space on my machine, even though a small one.

• Applications crashing after latest security update??

So i was prompted to download the new security update and the newest version of iTunes today. i do so, and upon start-up, i open adium and try to chat with a friend. before it could even open the IM window, adium chrashes. I updated adium and it still does the same. I then attempted to see if there were additional updates and the Software Updater also crashes instantly. i havent noticed any problems with other programs yet, but can anyone help me out on this one?
and the problems didn't start until AFTER the security update was installed

Some general advice on updating:
It is worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.8 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_8_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.8 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3606
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.5.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.7 to 10.5.8. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications and turn off energy saving and screensaver.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 4.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
• /Library/InputManagers
• ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

• Tiger going crazy on iBook G4 with new security update and Safari 3

I'm running 10.4.11, 1.42GHz PPC G4 with 1.5GB of SDRAM.
So I ran software update where I noticed new Security Update and Safari update.
I tried to run the new Safari - Nothing, it's dead, no action! ( could hear hard drive but no action)
Today I tried running 'Software Update', it's spinning it's wheels, over and over again.
I'm sure Apple is working on sending me an email, as they got the skinny when the program crashed I forwarded the system message.
So a bit frustrated hear, I'm using Safari and getting to know Camino.
The Biggest frustration is that 'Mail' will not boot up so I use my internet to check mail, bummer.
So lets hope we get some info soon.

If you are operating behind a proxy server, maybe this will help.
With regards to crashes from behind a proxy server, I came up with a work around!
I have been using Automatic proxy configuration using a .pac file. That seems to be causing the error.
After inspecting the .pac file, and following the if, ifelse path, at the very bottom is a proxy address and port for unclassified connections. Mine looks like this
proxy.sun.ac.za Port :####
I have put this into my System Preferences for all connection types, manually. This is found under, System Preferences: Built-in Ethernet: Configure Manually...
Then you need to go through the box on the left and check each box. As you do so, paste the default proxy address and port in the open boxes on the right.
Hope this work around helps. My Quicktime is still not working for my older .avi files.

I was down loading a few new apps/games for my 32gb 4th gen ipod touch using the ipod it's self  last nite 18-9-2011, after they where down loaded i connected my ipod to my computers itunes i went in the back up stage copying the app's/games to my itunes library, after this was done an message poped up on both my computer and ipod touch saying new Security update ipod touch 4th gen it satrting to download and i could not cancel it, now i know my ipod has the 16 digt passcode set up on it so now everytime i link my ipod to any of my auhorised computer it say itunes can not connect to my ipod as its passcoded which i think is an good thing because if i lose it anybody finding it if i lose it can't restore it. but is there any way of my computer been able to know its pass code with out haveing to enter it in to the ipod its self all the time

I looked at the descriptions for the last three update and none said they did anything about entering the passcode.  The Apple documentation says you should only have to enterthe passcode the first time you connect to the computer.  Specifically:
If you protect your iPhone or iPod touch with a passcode, you will be prompted to enter the passcode when you connect to iTunes. Once you successfully enter the passcode, iTunes will recognize that device as authorized and you will not need your passcode to back up or sync.

• G5 Startup Freeze after recent Security Update

Since installing the new Security Update, my G5 2.0 Dual freezes after the status bar in "Starting Mac OS X" reaches the end. I have restarted multiple times – same thing happens. I tried holding down SHift to start without extensions, but no difference. Then I booted from Tiger install disk and ran Disk Utility to repair disk and permissions, then rechecked. All O.K. Same freeze. Tried Single User Mode startup and ran FSCK – disk checked out O.K. I'm so frustrated that I'm entertaining an archive reinstall of Tiger. Does anyone have a solution or idea before I go that far? The Security Update worked fine on my G4 17" 1.0 MHz PowerBook, so I was able to go online to plea for help, but my G5 is my main workhorse and I've got to get back up and running. APPLE – WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME???

Well, I tried Tech Tool Pro and nothing changed. Went to MacFixit and followed all of their suggestions. Next, I made a clone of my H.D. with SuperDuper! before I took the next dramatic step. I finally bit the bullet and did an archive reinstall of Tiger, then applied all updates up to the newest Security Update. First install hung up on startup after updating to 10.4.7, so I did it again. I then spent the whole morning reisnstalling printer drivers, fonts, and third party stuff I had in my original system. All is working well now and I'm able to get back to work. Phew!!! I've been reading everyone else's trials and tribulations with the new S.U. This has never happened to me before with an S.U. Please Apple – don't do this to us who depend on our Macs for our very livelihood! Give us a way to restore to our previous state when an S.U. screws us up!

after last security update mac mini cannot see anymore the new 7200 rpm hddisk which worked like a charm since that…

I can fix permissions via dvd, I can see the mac mini disk if i connet via firewire to another mac,
but cannot boot from it…
tried a kind of tech tool test: it seems that I've got a huge amount of corrupted .plist files…
How could that happen?
does it mean that it's not an hardware issue?
should I reinstall snow?

I thought that erasing was formatting as well;
no, it's not. there is probably something wrong with the partition map of the drive which is why your mac firmware does not recognize it as a boot drive when you restart. simply erasing the drive won't fix it. reformatting might.
anyway I'm reinstalling now, if doesn't work will try reformatting too…
