Slow CS3 / system performance after Snow Leopard install

Since installing 10.6, I've noticed a systemwide slower performance; there's a slight hesitation after everything I do. Even something as simple as changing a filename causes a second or two of hesitation... then it lets me change the name.
This is especially noticeable in CS3 software; painting or editing in Photoshop is very difficult, because there's a second or two of hesitation before things occur. Even clicking menu items takes a second before the item opens.
Anyone else have this? So far, 10.6 (and yes, 10.6.1) have been a definite downgrade to my performance.

I have noticed no hesitation or slowdown, in fact startup and shutdown are noticeably faster, and system wide speed is same or better.
This is only relevant for photoshop, but ...

HP Photosmart C6300 printer/scanner not working after Snow Leopard install
Reinstalling etc does not work - does anyone else have the same problem or a clue as to how to fix this?

    Keith,
I got a C6280 and the scanner does not work anymore. I am for 6 days in contact with HP. The last printer driver install form the apple web site does not open the image of HewlettPackardPrinterDrivers.dmg because of an invalid checksum. The skipping of the validation gives and error in the install.

  • TS3479 quick time not working after snow leopard install?

Made video's on my iphone and loaded them to my imac. Video did not work in iphoto.  No Quick time pop up. what happened? Snow leopard install.

You need to re-install iPhoto because it's missing bits of itself:
    Library not loaded...
    Reason: no suitable image found.
Looking at the missing files it's possible that it's missing from the OS. But start with re-installing iPhoto, and if that fails you'll ned to re-install the OS.
    To re-install iPhoto
    1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
    2. Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name
    3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only...’

  • Text messages in Safari are garbled on Mac Pro after Snow Leopard install

When reading or composing my Yahoo mail text messages in Safari on my Mac Pro after Snow Leopard, the wording is very garbled. Looks like o's, s's, c's, some caps, with lots of spaces intermixed. Messages look ok on Firefox, on same machine. New messages and reading sent messages look ok on my MacBook and MB Air. When cutting and pasting into something else (like this window), the text looks fine. I can compose and send messages that look garbled, but the right words and letters go out. HTML messages look ok. Any clues for solution?

I have this happening in bunch of different HTML pages. Here's a screenshot of the same page in Safari (Version 4.0.3 (6531.9)) and Mac OS X 1.6.1 side by side with Camino:
    https://dl.getdropbox.com/u/362958/miscwebimages/Screen%20shot%202009-09-22%20at%2018.35.47.png
Camino renders the page correctly. Safari is really unusable with this problem. Tried switching to and from 64-bit mode in Safari, didn't help either.

  • Can't get some websites to work after snow leopard install, java maybe?

I'm a day trader. I use TD Ameritrade every day to work on. I believe the real time streamer and level 2 quotes are all java based.
This past weekend I did the Snow Leopard install on my computer. Until this morning it seemed like all was well.
I go to ameritrade and try to log in and it keeps saying it doesn't recognize my log in. I called them and they are able to log into my account so its my computer. I went to the java preferences and there use to be a lot of java types there now there are just 2, could that some how be it?
    Any suggestions?
    Susan

Safari is a 64 bit application, is it worth starting the app in 32 bit mode and testing if it is any better.
use finder and highlight Safari in the applications directory, do a get Info (cmd i) and tick the 32 bit mode box and restart Safari.
If it does not help remember to revert back to 64 bit mode.

  • IPhone 3GS doesn't sync after snow leopard install

Since installing snow leopard, iTunes does not sync with my iPhone when I connect it to the computer. iPhoto automatically opens to sync, but iTunes is dormant, and does not list my phone under the devices menu.....help!!

This same thing happened to me today.  Snow leopard install and now itunes cannot find any of our iphones. It might be nice IF APPLE ADDRESSED THIS ISSUE HERE ON THE THREAD. We also have a brand new iphone and can't even get it synced, which really really *****.
It bothers me that apple is not responding immediately to this issue.

  • Export from FCE extremely slow after Snow leopard install

Instead of increasing my export times from FCE Snow Leopard has made them slower by a factor of ten. It is taking an hour to convert 3 minutes of 1080i to 720p !!!!! On an 8 core machine !!!
I am exporting 1080i to 720p with a bitrate of about 2000 for uploads to Utube. I tried using QT10 for export but I am not happy with the loss of control over my exports, it does work but not directly from FCE. The process called by QT10 is very fast and uses all 8 cores, but that process is not being called by FCE.
So at this point I wish I had never gone for the upgrade.
Lots of crashes with QT 7 during the open file dialogue and also same problem with MPEGStream Clip crashing on the file open dialogue as well after this OS upgrade

I may not be having a snow leopard problem at all.
Going back to an old project in 1080i of an 8 minute length. the estimated time to render is about 50 minutes it says @20% of the way thru. Thats about 6x real time.
Maybe thats what I should expect. I was hoping for a significant speed increase in rendering times with the new OS. What is teh factor averaging for other people ?
I am rendering down to 720p multi pass 2320 kbit rate .MP4 in h.264
Maybe I have a settings problem in project properties in my other project.
I also got inspired and moved the render folders to a separate disk from the source files and put the caches on a 3rd drive. my I/O readings now are at 60 reads/sec.
Thanks for helping me work this issue out with you guys. Will keep you posted.

  • Mac Pro seems to be missing 0.5 GB of ram after Snow Leopard install

I just installed Snow Leopard on my Mac Pro (2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon). The computer has only ever had the default 2 GB of RAM that comes with it from Apple. I know I need more, it's on order. The odd thing that I noticed after installing Snow Leopard is that the computer now only reports 1.5 GB or RAM in the "About This Mac" box. Specifically it says: "1.5 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM". Odd.
Second if I click "More Info..." below is what I see in the memory slots.
Does anyone know what might have caused this, or if its possible to get that 0.5 GB back?
Second I just ordered 8 GB of RAM (MACMEM 4Gx2|KST KTA-MP800K2/8G R). If the above issue doesn't get resolved what do you suggest I do when the new RAM arrives? Should I just add in the new stuff for a total of 9.5 GB, or should I also take out the existing RAM that's reporting odd values? I'm wondering if the missing 0.5 GB is a symptom of other issues, and maybe that RAM is "sick" and could slow things down somehow.
    Thanks for any ideas.
    Jesse

I am running a '07 Mac Pro that has had 7GB RAM since I bought it almost 3 years ago - the original 2x512MB + 6x1GB purchased from Crucial.com. Suddenly, after installing Snow Leopard, only 6GB are being recognized; two of the 1GB DIMM's now read as 512MB in System Profiler, and the Part Number and Serial Number listed for those modules are incorrect.
After searching these forums for ideas, I have tried:
    • Resetting the PRAM -- no change
    • Running Apple Hardware Test -- no problems found
    • Running TechTool Deluxe 3.1.3 (updated for Snow Leopard) -- no problems found
    • Running TechTool Pro 5.1.6 (updated for Snow Leopard) -- no problems found
    • Running system scanner (beta) from Crucial.com - cannot read installed RAM
The only thing I haven't tried is physically reinstalling the modules, but since the computer hasn't moved in months that seems pretty doubtful. If I make any progress I'll post again, otherwise, I'll be contacting Crucial for replacements.

  • RAW CR2 files cause Bridge / PS CS3 to quit after Snow Leopard

    OS: Snow Leopard Fresh Install
    Camera: Canon XTi
    Files: Canon RAW CR2
Issue: Access of ANY kind to a RAW file causes the app(s) to quit.
Detail: Everything was fine in Leopard but for various reasons I did a fresh install of Snow Leopard. Wiped the drive and installed clean. Installed iLife 09 and then did any Apple updates. I then installed CS3 and did all the Adobe updates (Almost 600 MB). Used PS for some graphic stuff with no issue and thought everything was good until today. Went to Bridge and simply tried to navigate to my RAW photos and it quit. Tried opening a RAW in PS... same thing. Checked the ACR version and is was 4.6 but I reinstalled anyway... same. So, I uninstalled the fresh copy of CS3 and reinstalled to be safe... same. OK, now it was testing time. Navigated to the RAW files in Finder and can view them fine. I can quick preview them, open them in preview etc, so the OS raw support is fine. Same thing happens just trying to open the file with PS CS3 since it open using RAW.
I removed the RAW plugin and Bridge stayed open fine and displayed the files as generic thumbs. Put the plugin back and it dies again.
In Leopard the RAW Prefs were set to store the settings in the RAW database instead of sidecar files and I have tried putting the database file in from the pre-snow leopard backup. No luck. I am totally stumped any any ideas are welcome. I am about to restore the Leopard image.
    Thanks in advance,
    Razz

    Thanks for the idea Carolyn.
Unfortunately it did not fix it. I had tried it before and tried it again after your post. Thing is, it can't be the cache since the install of bridge has never been used. As soon as I load it and try to go view my files it quits. I would expect this from an upgraded SL install but an erase & install with fresh CS3 and all the OS and Adobe updates should be smooth. I really don't want to go back to Leopard but have to be able to mess with my photos. Why would removing the raw plugin stop the failure? It is 1 file, the correct version and fresh installed. Not sure what to do except maybe start over and yet that could still fail and takes a LONG time. I hate to upgrade to CS4 since I am not sure where the issues is.
Maybe install SL again over the top as an upgrade?
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks, Razz

  • Degraded Monitor Performance Post Snow Leopard Install

    Hi.
I have noticed substantial degraded Monitor Performance since installing Snow Leopard. The Monitor is an NEC MultiSync 20WMGX2. The picture is "washed out" looking. Any ideas what the problem might be? The Monitor Settings are as followngs:
    Brightness 50.0%
    Contrast 43.0%
    Sharpness 50.0%
    Advanced DV Mode is "on"
DV Mode is set for Text
The Graphics Card is the standard Mac Mini Intel GMA950 with 64MB of shared system memory.
Thanks for any suggestions on how to get the performance back for this monitor.
    Mike

Are you aware that the default display gamma has been switched from 1.8 to the default value of 2.2? If you want to build a 1.8 profile, then you still can. Some interpret the change as degradation.

  • White Screen After Snow Leopard Install

I just installed Snow Leopard on a late 2007 MacBook. Verified the disk before and got all updates after. Now, whenever the machine goes to sleep, it wakes up frozen. Restarting produces a plain white screen. If left, it will eventually show a folder with a question mark, like it can't find the startup disk. It needs to be restarted several times before booting up again. The startup disk has been selected in System Prefs more than once.
I've found several references to this being an old problem, but I have not found a solution. Has this problem been solved?

I suggest that you run the Apple Hardware Test in extended mode to see if it finds anything wrong with the hardware.
Thanks, I'll try that. But I doubt this is a hardware issue. I'm pretty sure this is a Snow Leopard issue, since many others have had this same problem after upgrading.

  • TM backup disk cannot be found after Snow Leopard install

Message from elsewhere re-posted here after helpful advice from Apple Discussions Team.
Just installed Snow Leopard (with TM switched off though not unplugged) and got all the software updates available. I re-installed the TM installation disk. Everything went ok until I wanted to restore from my Time Capsule. I switched the big switch on. TM is continuing to make backups but when I want to locate folders to restore TM won't go back further than the day I installed Snow Leopard. Having selected the TM disk and entered the password the dialogue tells me that the TM backup disk cannot be found and offers me the select disk dialogue again. I have gone through the unplug/plug routine.
Through Migration Assistant I tried the contents of my Pictures folder (including all my iPhoto libraries) but it just supplied an empty folder. Since I didn't migrate at the time of the Snow install I wonder whether it was migrating the earliest backup it had made after the Snow install. This would make sense if "the Time Machine backup disk cannot be found", as the dialogue keeps telling me.
    Anyone any ideas?

I'm not sure just what you did.
Did you reinstall Snow Leopard? Did you do a full restore?
First, just re-select your Time Capsule in TM Preferences.
If that doesn't help, try a "Full Reset" of TM per #A4 of the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
If that doesn't help, see #E2 there.
If still no help, use the Finder to see if you have two sparse bundles on your Time Capsule. If so, try mounting one manually by double-clicking it, then using the Browse option per #E2.

  • MacBook Pro Won't Sleep after Snow Leopard Install

Neither closing the computer, or selecting Sleep from the menu will allow my computer to enter slumber. Shorty after closing its eyes, my computer will make that unsettling grinding noise and wake up.
I've reset the PRAM, the PMU, turned off bluetooth, airport, all running applications. This only started happening after installing 10.6.
I found a thread on MacRumors discussing this problem, but there was no fix yet. So I bring it here. Can anybody guess what's up, or should I just take it in to the Apple store?

Don't bother taking it to the Apple Store. They won't be able to help. This is a bug in Snow Leopard. I don't know of any workaround or any way to make it stop. It doesn't happen all the time. Usually shutting down the machine will fix it. Sometimes, it will fix itself after a while.
It is important that you never assume a machine is going to go to sleep successfully. Always wait for the pulsating light. If it does go to sleep, chances are it will stay that way. I used iLid Preference Pane to make sure that my machine doesn't accidentally wake up while it is in a bag or something.
I've already filed a couple of bug reports about it. You can help you sending your feedback to Apple.

  • How to re-install apps after Snow Leopard install

I went from OS 10.4.11 to Snow leopard 10.6 OS, I have not Updated versions yet.
I used SupperDupper to back all of my hard drive of 10.4.11, prior to install of 10.6 OS.
I sort of thought that my applications and all of my settings would still be in place, that Snow Leopard would carry them over to it's new OS.
What a disappointment. No personal computer stuff from my old OS is present.
No System setup information is present, no Air port settings, No e-mail settings, no network settings, what a pain in the ........ well you know.
I got a basic OS right now and nothing else.
I do have the whole hard drive back up on an external though. how can I have MAC take the settings and third party applications and place them on the new OS without making problems for the new OS. Don't want to replace new MAC app files, with old ones.
if I use drag and drop then I have to spend a day and a half rebuilding network connections and then registering everything again.
How do I protect the integrity of 10.6 but still get my applications working without re-loading and without re-regeistering everything again application, by application.
    Thanks for you replies
    Randy

Alright, Superduper app on the backup drive allows me to launch SD, however, when I select the copy from drive (my backup) to copy to the copy to drive, the laptop HD, I find that the Laptop HD is grayed out.
I dragged and dropped SD to the Laptop and then launched and received the same result, the Laptop HD is still grayed out.
My SD says at the bottom of the window, Unregistered, but it was registered on my laptop before the OS install.
So i am I right that I have to get my network working, then register SuperDuper again, then see if I can select the Laptop HD as the destination drive for moving the apps over to?

  • Can't Print After Snow Leopard Install?

My network includes iMac(2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo), a Compaq laptop and Ativa router (AWGR54 Wireless G v01)(Belkin),Brother MFC6490CW (all-in-one wireless). All working fine together.
Added a brand new Macbook running Snow Leopard which connects to internet/email just fine, but WOULD NOT PRINT to Brother MFC6490CW printer. When I upgraded iMac from Leopard to Snow Leopard 10.6 it also stopped printing wirelessly to Brother MFC6490CW. So now both iMac and Macbook won't print unless wired.
    Any ideas?

When I upgraded iMac from Leopard to Snow Leopard 10.6 it also stopped printing wirelessly to Brother MFC6490CW.
I thought I had this same issue with my Epson printer when wireless printing. Actually, in SL, wireless printing is very slow at least with an Epson. Takes about 5 minutes or so for wireless print to even start. When checking the printing status app, it will start out saying "printer ready." Then after a few minutes it will say "looking for printer." A few minutes later it will say "printing."
When I go into the next room where the printer is, the green light is "flashing" letting me know that "printing" has started.
So I guess what I am trying to say is to check the printing status app after you click "print." It's possible "Brother" is just as slow as "Epson."
