Slow dialing, too many contacts

Problem:
When I manually dial a phone number, the iPhone checks my 2300+ contacts list after each press of a number and tries to tell me who i'm calling. This slows things down a lot.
Example 1:
- Phone app
- Dial
- start dialing:
(area code)
5
1
4
*everything hangs for about 6-7 seconds, even if i continue dialing*
all the other numbers i dialed appear suddenly.
Example 2:
- Phone
- Dial
- Start dialing
(area code)
5
1
4
- I wait and stop feeding any more numbers to the dialer
- 6-7 sec later, below my "514" is written somethins like "john smith and 1590 others"
- I input the rest of the phone number: no lag.
Solution ?
Last thing I could care about is the iPhone giving me possibilities of who I'm calling. To my understanding, thats what is slowing things down: having to check in my huge contact list who matches the number i'm dialing.
Question:
Is there a way to not have the iPhone try to tell me who I'm dialing so I get no lag while manually dialing a phone number ?
PS: sorry for the bad english, frenchy here.

Thx for the help so far guys, not done yet though.
iPhone 3G 8GB running firmware 2.2.1.
Fresh restore just finished. i didnt sync anything.
Tried dialing, A1. no lag at all.
I sync'd my addressbook via iTunes (my addressbook is pretty straightforward: no groups, no LDAP, 2359 cards, about 400 are company cards, about 20 contacts with pictures, nothing fancy).
Tried dialing, same problem as before, lag kicks in after the area code "random name and 900ish more".
0 additional app installed.
a bad contact ?
bad phone number formatting ?
In my AddressBook prefs, under "Phone", "Automatically format phone numbers" is checked and the format used is "+1 (123) 456-7890".
Any clue ?

  • BB Q10 is troublesome for my bluetooth car stereo due to too many contacts

In the past my various blackberrys have had no problem connecting via bluetooth to my car stereos or various hands free units. I do have 9,000+ contacts on my blackberry. Typically a car hands free unit will only take the fist few hundred or thousand. This has never bothered me as i dial manually from my backberry phone. However on the Q10 it seems to keep feeding contacts to my Kenwood car stereo, result being that my stereo displays continuously the message "downloading" over any other display - which is frustrating to say the least. I have spoken at length with Kenwood support, and they seem unable to help, but keep leading back to trying to find a way for the Q10 to connect on the bluetooth for voice / calls, but turn off sharing of contacts or data. The kenwood product does not have any control on this unfortunately. The Q10 also seems to support phone book auto synchronisation. I know others have had issues on the bluetooth car connection for the Q 10, but no one seem to have the same issue i do - of too many contacts, or not that i have seen. The phone works fine via the bluetooth connection, it is simply a pain that i cannot see my tracks or radio station on the stereo because it is "downloading". Does anyone have a solution for this issue from the blackberry side, if not is there likely to be one in the future? I have been impressed by the fact that blackberry have made other changes recently such as resolution size of photographs etc, wonder if we can expect other tweaks.

In Italy we have some Radio Sender which can be connected to the iPhone and send the music to the FM receiver.
They are practically useless. Even if you can tune in to find a range free from Radio sender it is stable only for 1 Mile. Then you get a strong radio over your music.
BT should be more stable but I do not believe it will give you a stronger signal compared to a direct cable connection.
    You really need an amplifier.

  • How to slow down too many deliveries of daily return_job?

Does anyone know how to slow down too many deliveries of dail return_job at 00:30?
    I'm using following version.
    $ /opt/SUNWmsgsr/sbin/imsimta version
    Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.3-5.02 (built Oct 12 2007; 32bit)
    libimta.so 6.3-5.02 (built 17:15:31, Oct 12 2007; 32bit)
SunOS hostname 5.9 Generic_122300-13 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Fire-480RAbout 7,000 delivery notification messages was created by return_job in 1 minute
and then the smarthost could not process these messages and froze.

    Thanks, Shane.
So, I want to control the transmission rate to smarthost, especially mails created by return_job.You can throttle back the rate at which Messaging Server attempts to send emails to the smarthost by decreasing the maxjobs setting from 7 to say 2 and increasing the threaddepth to say 32. This will reduce the number of simultaneous active connections and also the rate at which new delivery jobs are created.
    http://msg.wikidoc.info/index.php/Threaddepth_Channel_Option
Also since you are using the daemon keyword you may want to try the multiple option (instead of single_sys).
    http://msg.wikidoc.info/index.php/Multiple%2C_addrsperfile%2C_single%2C_single_sys_Channel_Options
So these combined give you the following channel definition:
    ! tcp_local
tcp_local smtp nomx daemon smarthost.example.com multiple remotehost inner switchchannel identnonenumeric subdirs 20 maxjobs 2 pool SMTP_POOL maytlsserver maysaslserver saslswitchchannel tcp_auth missingrecipientpolicy 0 loopcheck threaddepth 32
    tcp-daemonRegards,
    Shane.

I received a message about having too many contacts?  Not sure what this means, didn't know there limitations on contacts.  Can you tell me about fixing this problem?

What were you doing when you received the message?
I have seen reports on these forums where there is a limit to how many contacts you can have in the "to" field of a text message. That is the only thing I can think of where someone has reported getting a warning about too many contacts.

  • Mail slow down; too many messages?

Mail (4.4) has slowed down a bunch here. I click on an unread message and it takes a good 5 seconds (or more) to show the message and any pics in it. (most of the time it seems to display the wrong message for a quick spell, then go and wait on the correct message)
I do have 9 accounts (and 3 dead ones) Most IMAP and some POP. I do sync and also keep/move a bunch to the On My Mac section.
Is there a way to find the total # of messages in Mail? (not just a selected folder)
I might just go the mailSteward route and keep Apple Mail lean and mean.

I wish I could offer a solution ... I'm posting because I'm also suffering from brutally slow search in Apple Mail. I have multiple mailboxes with lots of messages using IMAP and POP with Gmail but must it really take (literally) a minute to type something into the box and get results? Even more frustrating, typing into the box is slow ... each letter takes 5-10 seconds to apppear!
I tried "vacuuming" my mailbox according to instructions I found online. That made it a little smaller but didn't help noticeably. My sense is that the indexing is screwed up or I simply have too many messages and it's choking on it.
I'd love anyone's input! I'm a recent convert (back) to Mac OS and I'm just not sure how to begin fixing this problem.

  • If you cannot sync contacts this might be the problem...too many contact groups

I have a Centro and MAC book and was trying to use ISync and then Missing Sync to sync data. In both programs the contacts would not sync but all else did just fine. I have many contacts but did not need all of them on my phone so I organized them into groups in the address book, with one group being a list of the current contacts I wanted on my phone. With MissingSync the program will only sync a certain number of groups, although I had more than that number I didn't think it mattered because I was only trying to sync the one group. It matters. Even though in the Missing Sync conduit setting the group was listed and I only checked that group off to sync - nothing would sync.
The solution was to save a back up of my address book and then delete all my contact groups except the one I wanted to sync. POOF! It worked. I am not sure exactly how many groups would work but if the priority is to get a certain number of contacts, not all, on your phone and you have a lot of groups, maybe this strategy will work for you. If you are using ISync, since the problem was the same for both programs, maybe this would also be the solution in ISync.
What led to this ah-ha moment was a forum moderator at MissingSync suggesting I create another user on my computer with administrative capability, create a few test contacts and then try to sync. This did work, the contacts did sync.
I hope this may be of help to someone and possibly save you a lot of time.  Good luck!

  • Am I trying to print too many Contacts at once?

I have over 2000 contacts in my Address Book, and when I try to print I get the "Preparing" window forever. I can break it down to smaller groups, but I'm wondering if there's a limit to how many contacts Address Book can print in one pass. Any ideas?

You really can't. Try downloading them on your computer and sync. Next try restoring from backup.

  • Too many contacts = sms problems

Hi, i bought and 16GB iPhone last week and i'm having some problems with SMS.
When I click on the SMS, it takes about 40 seconds to open (when it opens, because normally just returns to the home screen), everything is really slow (opening conversations, writing/reading messages..). The problem only occur when my big list of contacts its in the phone (+- 4000 names).
My sister bought and 16GB in the same day, everything is equal, but she only have 100 contacts and her iPhone work perfectly. I already tried restoring my iPhone and reseting, but after syncing my contacts, the SMSs just stop working right. When i sync MY contacts in HERs iPhone, the SMSs of hers phone also starts having problems.
I feel like if it wasnt prepared for that ammount of data. What should i do? Does the iPhone has limitations regarding the number of contacts?
    Thanks in advance.

My life would be a lot easier if the iPhone had a spotlight, but in the time been, my fingers are getting stronger from all the scrolling...
I cant delete contacts because most of them are business relations/ hotels/ restaurants/ tennis partners... My contacts are my office on the road. But thanks for trying to help...
Anyone have a solution for my SMS problem?

  • Too many contacts

I have far more contacts in outlook than I want to keep on my iPhone. I would like to select a smaller group of contacts to sync, but iTunes wont let me change from all contacts to selected groups. What's the solution to this?

Beware...it is no fun transferring contacts from a PC to a Mac - at best you will lose your assigned categories. Microsoft does not want you to leave the PC. There is third party software that makes it easier, but not easy.

  • Does iPhoto slow with too many photos?

I have approx 2600 4-6 megapixel totaling 4.9GB. Opening iPhoto is slooooooooooowwwwwwwwww and closing sloooooowwwwwwweeeeeerrrrrrrrrr.
Is it the library size? or what? If I archive most will it speed up?
    OR
is it a big 10.4.4 update conspiracy to slow down our iLoife '05 apps so we upgrade to '06?

How does one split thier photo library into 1GB chunks?
Not easy… you have to duplicate your library in the Finder (I call them Library A + B).
Then you start iPhoto with the alt key pressed. iPhoto asks you to choose
    a library.
You choose A and erase all photos older than (for ex.) 1.1.2004.
Quit iPhoto, restart with alt key, choose B and delete alls photos newer than 1.1.2004.
If you want more smaller libraries start again (with Library C, D, etc.).

  • Is Siri confused by too many contacts?

I just got an iPhone 4S, primarily because of the raves about Siri. However, no matter what I say to Siri, it seems to want to call up someone on my contact list. I have about 3000 contacts. Is there a way around this? Can I segment my contacts into the much smaller subset I am likely to call, and the the much larger number which I would like it to ignore? Thanks, Jim

    Hi,
I am having exactly the same problem, with a bit over 3.500 contacts, it take long, and mostly it finds the wrong contact. Easiest would be a way to point Siri at a contact list only, our to prioritze the favorits.

  • Too Many Contacts Sync'd Over Each Other!!

I just got a 4s on Sprint (Never had an iPhone before, but had an iPad and a MacBook Pro), and I sync'd my contacts with my Google, Exchange, MobileMe, iCloud accounts, and now I have a ridiculous amount of duplicates. I spent at least 4 or 5 hours going through my contacts on my iPhone and 'linking' all the duplicates together, but whenever I use Siri to call/text/email a contact, it always says "you have 15 entries for John Doe" etc. So annoying!
How do I get rid of all the un-needed data? Once I have it all on my phone, does it all sync to iCloud? If I un-sync my google account, will everything still be there? If I go through individually and delete contacts, will it all end up deleting on the cloud, or will it stay on the cloud and just delete on my phone?
    Thanks for the help!

The side button on Apple Watch gives you quick access to people you stay in touch with the most. Press the side button, pick a friend, then call, send a message, or use Digital Touch. But frst, add your friends to Apple Watch.
Add friends to Apple Watch on iPhone. Apple Watch automatically adds up to 12 of your favorite contacts from iPhone. To change the list of friends that appears on Apple Watch, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, then tap Friends. In the Friends list, tap Add Friend, then tap your friend in the list of contacts that appears. If your friend isn’t in the list, open the Contacts app on iPhone and add them, then try again.
See friends on Apple Watch. Press the side button to see up to 12 of your friends. Turn the Digital Crown to highlight each friend. Tap a friend’s picture or initials, then choose how you want to get in touch.

  • Sync's too many contacts

I have several contact lists in Outlook. Before 1.1.3 it sync'd up the main "Contacts" ignoring all the others. Now it has sync'd ALL the lists on to the phone.
I know you can select which contacts to sync, but the main "Contacts" isn't listed, only the other ones, which I don't want!
Any help? Why doesn't it list all my contact lists? I only have 6.

  • How do I stop unwanted and too many friend request...

I started receiving way too many contact requests from unknown men, usually all military, Which I have been consistently blocking, but I want to know if my account has been jacked or what is going on and how to stop this, please. Anyone???

just some clarifications changing your privacy settings will only prevent unwanted calls and/or IMs from people who are not in your contact list.  It will not prevent other users, both legitimate and potential scammers/spammers, from sending your contact requests.

I spent a LONG time on gmail going through my list of contacts. There were about 400 and I got it down to about 90. When I went to sync my new phone, ALL 400 synced.
