Slow disk writes VM 3.1

I know I must have something configured wrong but I can't figure it out.
I have tested disk write access on my VM servers in V2.2 and V3.1, using these commands:
hdparm -tT /dev/mapper/<lun>
and
dd if=/dev/zero of=output.img bs=8k count=256k
the output is very close between the V2.2 and V3.1 servers, so that's good.
But then when I execute those command on the actual VMs themselves within the 2.2 and 3.1 environments, I get different results.
The hdparm command is still equivalent between the two.
But the dd command shows my old V2.2 VMs getting around 650mb/s while my new V3.1 VMs are getting between 8mb-30mb/s. Does anyone have an idea off the top of their head why this would be?
Oh, I just tried one more thing... most of my V3.1 VMs were converted from V2.2 via template import. I just tried the same commands on a couple of new VMs I made in V3.1 (from OL6-64bit templates) and they returned 360mb/s and 750mb/s. So I wonder what's wrong with the VMs that I converted from VM2.2?

Hi there,
We're having exactly the same problem as you appear to have experienced. Very slow write I/O in guest VMs (domU) but fast I/O on the host on the same iSCSI file system.
Write I/O inside the guest is between 3-20MB/sec (dd bs=2048k count=512), whereas on the host its 95MB/sec - which is hitting the practical limits of our GigEth iSCSI SAN.
I've checked inside the guests and can see no problems of write caches being disabled in dmesg. Curiously we hit this same wall on both a RHEL6.3 and Solaris10U10 guest.
I've tried both sparse and non-sparse files and the performance is the same. Read performance is fine, but this write bottleneck is a showstopper. Would appreciate any assistance you guys might have while I await a response from Oracle..
Setup:
- Oracle VM 3.1.1 update 485
- Sun Fire X4150 Server
- Sun Storagetek 2510 iSCSI SAN

  • Oracle 10G Slow Disk Writes

We have currently purchased a "SUN SPARC Enterprise T5220" with 2 x 146GB 10K RPM SAS and 2 x 72.8GB 10K RPM SAS disks. I have installed Oracle 10g and created a datbase. The TEMP tablespace and REDO logs and data files all reside on dedicated disks. I have mounted the TEMP, REDO and Datafile filesystems as forcedirectio and set the Oracle setting FILESYSTEMIO_OPTIONS to "SETALL". The speed when writing to disk seems very slow, most of the top waits on the database are for "log file parallel write", "db file parallel write", "direct path write temp",
cann anyone advise on what I might have done wrong.

Why do directIO on a local disk. DirectIO should be used when you are using a disk array that has cache on it to avoid the double cache hits (IE system cache hit one and then the cache hit on the array).

  • Check/Turn on Disk write cache

    Dear all,
I read one of the Oracle metalink, and it said, we need to turn on the 'disk write cache' for better file writing throughput, but I am not very sure, whether currently, my newly installed Solaris 9 system have the 'disk write cache' turned on. Please advise,
    - Whichcommand, I can use to check the current setting?
    - How can I turn the 'disk write cache' if it is current off
    Thanks
    Regards,
    Eddie

There are so many things that this could be, particularly when Oracle is brought into play, that I wouldn't know where to really start.
    For example:
    * Are you using parallel directories? If so, are all of the directories on separate hard drives? Better yet, are they on separate SCSI chains?
    * Are you using UFS or VxFS?
    * Did you run an iostat and vxstat to isolate where the slowness is occurring?
    * Are you using any kind of software RAID?
    * What's the speed of your drives?
    * Are your boot disks mirrored? (Yes, boot disk performance can kill an entire server even if the applications and data are not on the boot disk.)
    * Do you have inode access time enabled or disabled?
    * Have you fine-tuned your kernel settings for better disk utilization?
Unfortunately, disk optimization is hell to diagnose. I know because I just went through weeks tuning the I/O of our production server. It's NOT fun.

  • Does anyone know how to solve: "Firmware update failure. Disk write error"?

    Hi all,
Here is the list of all what went wrong and where I am now:
    1. My Ipod worked well
    2. I wanted to update it, you know, the normal thing with Itunes
    3. Every time I tried, my computer froze. I was unable to add only one song (both automatically and manually).
    4. I took my external drive (where my music is) at work and tried again: same result.
    5. I decided to run the Updater I have on the CD that came with the Ipod.(2005-02-07; I usually avoid the newer version, having had once a problem when putting a newer version of Updater).
    6. The Updater was unable to operate any action on my Ipode (I don't remember the messages now).
    7. Like I tried what I describe here above like a hundred time. I decided to format the Ipod with Windows (My Computer, right click on the Ipod, format).
    8. It did and now I have only the famous folder with an exclamation mark on my Ipod.
    9. Now when I am running the Updater, it says it cannot Restore the factory settings giving this message "Firmware update failure. Disk write error".
I would appreciate any help because, during the last 2 hours, I read and tried all I found on the Support Help here on the Apple web side without any result yet.
Thank a lot for your answer

  • TS4027 Slow disk error message in 2.2.1 - even with SSD

hi, I've been using Mainstage 2 since September 2011 and really enthousiastic on the concept. However, with version 2.1 I had a lot of bugs. The main bug was hanging notes and that is really frustrating when you are performing...
anyway, i now upgraded to 2.2 which seems to have solved this issue but now i have a different problem. regularly MS comes with a slow disk error which could be caused by underperforming disks or freefall motion sensor. Well, because of that I upgraded to SSD and spend almost 300 euro's to have this fixed. after replacement I had a extremely fast notebook and thought all issues were over but I still get the errors! when the errors ossurs some sounds get removed from the output which is annoying...
if anyone can help me with this?

Hi Drew if you haven't resolved this. TRy this to see if the issue is a TRANSIENT object access error instead for submitting directly to Compressor. Do this to isolate any content error defects before making you distribution (older 2 stage workflow)..
in FCPX 10.1, make sure the projects Primary Storyline is completely rendered - select all and cntl+R (render selection or control+shift+R)In FCPX 10.1 watch the background tasks (+9) and wait for all the rendering to be completed.... (make sure no object errors)
in FCPX 10.1 export a master File/Share/Master File (+E) as PRORES 4xx and save it ~/Movies/Drews_final_master.mov (prores)
    in Compressor.app V4.1,
    create a new BATCH ,
    import the MASTER object ~/Movies/Drews_final_master.mov)
(and add your setting and submit it. (dont use FCPX SEND TO COMPRESSOR just yet! until you resolve this issue)
This process will avoid the use of transient  file storage areas that seem to be used in the FCPX to COMPRESSOR.

  • New Mac with major permission and disk-write problems

Right, so I'm pretty new to Mac, after getting my first Mac computer (a 17-inch MacBook Pro) at the end of January this year. It's been great so far and I love the thing, but I've suddenly encountered some crazy problems which I'm pulling my hair out over because I have tried everything to fix them, and have had no luck.
I'll try to include as many details as possible, and I'm prepared to bear with anyone who asks me about something I've alrady tried, just so I can get this sorted.
Okay, so first of all, the main problem seems to be with permissions, mostly with disk-write permissions. Any apps that I want to install that required keychain access will no longer install. I enter my keychain password, hit Return, and the dialog box closes without continuing. So I hit "Install" again and it becomes a never-ending cycle of entering my password to no avail. Now, this happens with ANY application that requires keychain access to install. It is not limited to any particular application. I know my password is right because the box closes, and if I enter it wrong, the dialog box shakes because it is incorrect.
Furthermore, it seems keychain access is problematic in other apps. If I want to authenticate something, it will do the same thing as I mentioned before, meaning I get nowhere with the application.
From here, it gets worse. If I download something (anything), then restart my computer, it is still there. As it should be. However, if I delete an APPLICATION (not just any file) OR change preferences for some programs (one in particular that I specifically don't want starting up on.... startup), including through System Preferences>Users & Groups>Login Items, they will not save. This is driving me insane. For instance, I downloaded some free apps from the Mac App Store to try out, but decided I didn't want them. I tried to deleted them from the app folder and succeeded. Emptied trash. Gone. Restart, and.... they're back? So I tried to uninstall them via the Mac App Store, once I found you could do that. Again, it didn't work. Any Login Items preference changes don't stay after a restart.
Originally, none of this was a problem and everything was working fine. The first sign that something was wrong would be Apple Mail often asking for passwords, usually for my Hotmail accounts, saying that they were rejected by the server (but are correct passwords, I get the emails from the accounts, and the passwords are always accepted once I type them in, only to be asked for them some time later on for no apparent reason). At the time, I tried to repair the keychain, tried deleting and recreating the mail account entries and what not, but nothing helped. It still happens, but at the time, it was more of a niggly thing than an outright problem.
I should also mention that I did use BootCamp to install Windows 8 on a small partition, but after I couldn't boot back into Mac (I didn't realise you had to use the Option key whilst booting), I found out that you had to hold the Option key to get back into Mac, then used BootCamp to get rid of Windows. Everything was fine so far. Until I decided to reinstall Windows 8 with BootCamp. This is where things started going wrong. I decided to install a bootloader to make it easier for me to boot between the two systems. I was tossing up between rEFIt and Chameleon, and decided that rEFIt would be the best for my needs. So I downloaded and installed it, which seemed to go fine. Until I restarted. Mac would endlessly load (the spinning grey dots with the Apple logo).
Now, I actually managed to fix this, but I should probably go into more detail. First of all, holding the option key and selecting my Mac partition would allow me back into Mac, and same with Windows 8. At this point, I decided to uninstall Windows 8 to try fix my problems, except now BootCamp was giving me errors. I believe it was something about being unable to unmount the disc, but it may have been a different error. I don't entirely remember. So then I decided to try getting rid of rEFIt. I followed the instructions on the official site but it didn't work. So then I tried deleting the files with root (sudo) access through terminal. Which also failed....
So to the Recovery partition. Booting into Disk Utilities, I repaired permissions, which worked fine, and repaired the disk. I believe I had run the disk repair a few times before to try to fix BootCamp when it stopped working. Anywaym it had worked before, but this time, it said that it was corrupted and could not be repaired. Something about needing to reinstall Mac OS X. With all my files on this computer and currently nothing to back it up with (eventually I will have something to do backups with, but it'll have to wait a few months), I'm not going to do that.
Finally, I managed to delete the rEFIt files through Terminal within the Recovery partition. I ran permission repair and disk repair again to clean anything up. Disk repair gave me the same error, but now I could get back into Mac without holding the option key on every **** boot.
Now more problems had presented themselves. I decided that the lock under Login Items was probably preventing me form successfully changing my startup items. Trying to unlock it did the same thing as I previously mentioned. Type in my password, keychain accepts it, then nothing happens. The keychain settings were already defaulted so that keychain would stay unlocked after authenticated, and all stuff like that. Using "Get Info" on anything has permissions locked and again, I cannot unlock to change them, although looking at a PDF file just now, whilst still locked, it would allow me to add or remove users, so maybe that's not completely accurate. I believe I tended to look at the system folders though, and my name wasn't under ownership, although I don't believe it was meant to be, but I was hoping that maybe that would fix the problem. I guess not.
At this time, I still had my Windows 8 partition sitting around and couldn't get rid of it. I heard of the manual way to do it through Disk Utility. I tried this in Mac OS X, and through the Recovery partition, but neither worked. An error about being unable to unmount the drive. I finally found a way to remove it. Honestly, I don't completely remember how I did it, but I believe it was through a command line, uh.... command. Now I had free space that I couldn't use to expand my Macintosh HD partition back to full size, again with the unable to unmount error. Finally, I fixed this by booting from a Mac OS X installation disc that I happened to have, and using Disk Utility off of that. After that, Disk Utility no longer gave me errors for disk repair.
However, my other problems all still remained. I had written a little list of things I found on the internet for fixing my problems. One solution was to use "resetpassword" through terminal under the Recovery partition, then select Macintosh HD and select "Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs". That didn't work until I tried it through the Disk Utility on the Mac OS X installation disc. That worked, and once I was back into Mac, Spotlight started indexing again. However, nothing else had happened.
I should also mention that keychain access isn't completely non-existent for me. Setting up a new WiFi connection worked for me (that is, connecting to a new network), but now every time I connect to the network, I have to authenticate it. However, it does accept my keychain password and eventually connect.
Now, another thing on my list to try was single-user mode, and using "/sbin/fsck -fy" until everything was okay. Well, the first time, it found a bunch of errors, then fixed itself up. Then it was all okay. But nothing had changed. So trying again, I this time used ?/sbin/mount -uw /" which I believe is meant to allow writing access to the drive. Now when running "/sbin/fsck -fy", I had an error. Specifically, "Journal need to be replayed but volume is read-only".
So that's pretty much where I am up to at the moment. It seems to be a poblem with write permissions, possibly among other things. If it was Windows, I might be able to work it out easier, but being new to Mac, I'm still finding my way around. I guess this is a good learning experience, but it's not fun to have to deal with it so early on.
If anyone can help me, I'd greatly appreciate it. I have tried many things, so if you suggest something that I have tried and possibly forgot to mention, I'll let you know, but any help is still helpful, even if only eliminating possible problems/causes/solutions.

Actually you first post is so long that most people just glance at it and move on. To say the least you are very verbose.
Your problem stems from something going wrong with permissions, as you know. How and why that happen is usually a user error of some type.
You can try to repair permissions and see if that corrects it. If not I will leave other options to someone that may know more about the permission system on a Mac.

  • Slow Disks After Cluster Creation

    Hi,
I have a Windows Server 2008R2 SP1 cluster, consisting of two VMWare virtual servers, which is experiencing very slow disk performance (~10mb/s when copying to or from any of the cluster disks). If I destroy the cluster and bring the disks online on a
standalone server I can get over 200mb/s.  The disks are presented as RDMs, with the two nodes on separate ESX hosts and the disks in Physical Compatibility mode.
Could anyone explain why disk performance could become so poor as soon as the cluster is created? All the tests in the cluster validation report passed.
Not sure if this helps, but I have also noticed that when I turn maintenance on for each of the disks in Failover Cluster Manager, their performance improves dramatically.
    Thanks

  • Atomic disk writes using Java, is it possible??

Hi, I need to do atomic disk writes using Java, is that supported/possible? And if, how is it done?
With a atomic disk write I mean that if I write to a file all information should be written or none at all, not just some of the data. (In case of a program crash or other failures in the computer)
    /Fredrik

you can store all the information in an object..and when you are sure you have all you need, you write all the data in one step to a file...
but there is never a 100% guarantee.. you can check after the writing process if the size is correct or such things..

  • Horrible performance due to disk writes

Whenever there is a high volume of disk writes in the internal SATA2 drive, everything comes to a crawl, and most programs are barely responsive. If I run the same tasks but work from an external USB drive, there is zero negative impact on system performance! (SMART status is Verified)
I have trouble believing that this should be expected behaviour; basically, whenever I am downloading several files at the same time, it takes the whole system hostage, even though the CPUs are at least 90% idle.
What could be going so wrong?

(oh, good, just noticed it was a reference to a USB stick, which is not what I was using.)
Say I'm downloading 5 OS distro DVD torrents, all at the same time, each anywhere from 600 MB to a few GBs, so for the next hour or so, there will be non-stop writing to the disk as torrents' "parts" are downloaded and saved. after a few minutes there will be plenty of connections opened, and lots of activity, and, next thing you know, most other applications will stop responding. oddly, the only application that still responds well is uTorrent itself.
Most times when I need to get updates and the like, I launch it all and go do something else, but instead one time I continued surfing the web, and was having a lot of delays, so I started wondering if it was a bit much on the network side (Cable ISP), but it wasn't. Then I tried to watch a video, and that was a nightmare all together.
I have a habit of running other OSes under VMWare Fusion, and I'd noticed a similar performance problem when I'd run defrag on the VM guests, which I'd accepted as normal in that case, but it caused me to try and use an external USB (magnetic) drive as the target of the torrents, to see if there would be a difference, and boy was there one! I even moved my VMs to the external drive, and running defrag on those no longer caused delays. So, this makes me wonder if there's something wrong with either (perhaps) the internal drive, or the BUS, or something.
Just in case I'm still not being clear:
I use uTorennt to download 7 torrents of 700 MB each, on the internal drive, and watch any other task crawl. However, do the same thing, while saving to an external drive, and everything is fine.
I hope I'm making more sense (and thanks for the interest).

Even with the plugin disabled in chrome://plugins I still see the same ammount of IO.
Any ideas why it's making so many writes?

As long as you bought a decent SSD, I wouldn't worry about this too much.  In the early days, when the firmware was still you and it sucked, the wear levelling didn't work properly and disks would prematurely die.  But these days, with new disks, it has been found that the controller will likely die long before the flash wears out.
I have a Samsung 840 250GiB, which as you may or may not know, is Triple Level Cell (TLC).  If you also know anything about SSD flash, the originals were Single Level Cell and the SLC these days can sometimes do 100,000 write cycles.  Multi-Level Cell (MLC) consumer disks are typically rated for 3000 to 5000 write cycles.  So as you can guess, this means my TLC is significnatly lower than the MLC.  But I have seen a couple tests with these 840s, where it was just constantly written to at a write amplification of 1 (you'll never actually see this low of a write amplification in real life), and it lasted for several months.  At that level, it was determined that under "normal use" it would last something like ~160 years.  Even with a rather high write amplification of 10, that would still be 16 years.  So don't worry about it.  Just use it.
In any case, I also don't like how much chromium writes to the disk, but this would be the case whether I was using an SDD or an HDD.  So I use the /etc/chromium/default config to also add "--disk-cache-dir=/tmp".  This is also where those pappi switches can be found (the post_install function of the pappi package writes this for you).  That switch will make a directory /tmp/Cache, where chromium will store its cached web pages.  This would otherwise be in ~/.cache/chromium/Cache I believe.  Your normal profile, passwords, form info, bookmarks, etc. are all stored in ~/.config, so you don't be losing any of that.
