Slow down across the system?

I have Microsoft Office 2004 and about 150gb space on my laptop but everything has slowed down recently. Can anyone suggest a reason? It affects word, the internet, mail - everything.

Hi goslowshazza, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be lots of reasons, but I'd get Applejack...
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/15667/applejack
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, (+s), then when the DOS like prompt shows, type in...
applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 6 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 6 things it does are...
Correct any Disk problems.
Repair Permissions.
Clear out Cache Files.
Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Trash old Log files.
First reboot will be slower, sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!
Disconnect the USB cable from any Uninterruptible Power Supply so the system doesn't shut down in the middle of the process.

  • General Slowing Down of the System?

This is just a general question: my 17" iMac seems to run a little slower these days than it used to. It's not a problem and it might even be my imagination. But is there anything that should be done periodically to keep the speed tiptop? I run Disk Utilities Repair Permissions now and then as well as virus scans, but I can't find any mention of tasks like de-fragmenting. The disc is an 80 GB with about 16 GB left free (though until the other day it had never had less than 45GB free - I've been loading a few video clips in). Does the OS automatically take care of stuff like de-fragging?
As ever, any help or advice gratefully received.

    1. Get more RAM.
    2. If you don't keep the computer on 24/7 then manually run the routine cron maintenance tasks.
    3. Clear out caches (manually or use cache cleaning utilities).
    4. Clear out logs files (manually or use system maintenance utilities).
    5. Clear Java Plugin Settings caches.
    6. If Safari slows also clear Users/Home/Library/Safari/Icons/.
    7. Defragging a Mac usually isn't necessary unless you are using extremely large files and are running out of disk space.

  • HT5730 After I installed 10.8.48.4 Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection.  How can I get back to normal operating speed?

After I installed 10.8.4, my Internet browsing slowed down to the pace of a dial-up connection -- unless it froze up completely.  How do I get my system back to a normal operating mode?  Can I dump 10.8.4 and go back to the one that at least worked?

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them.
    1. Have you restarted your router and broadband modem since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
    2. Are any other web browsers installed, and are they also slow?
    3. What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
    4. Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they also slow?
    5. If you can test Safari on another network, is it slow there too?
    6. If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Visualizing SAP XI routing configuration across the system landscape

    Hi Experts
Iam facing some challenges in visualizing SAP XI routing configuration across the system landscape (Development, Quality, Production). Basically routing is based on a field (technical target system). Depending on the environment we have different target systems (different Mainframe DB that represent the same target system) configured.
Any word/excel/ppt/pdf templates or any comments that could help visualizing routing would be highly appreciated.
    Thanks! Santosh

    Hi Santhosh,
If you are worrieed about how your Business Systems will change when you move from Dev to QA to PROD for the Configuration in your ID, then the answer is simple.
You can create transport target for your Business System and so when you migrate the ID objects from dev to Qa and so on, the business Systems will be automatically replaced.

You may notice a difference in available space statistics between Disk Utility, Finder, and Get Info inspectors. This is expected and can be safely ignored. The Finder displays the available space on the disk without accounting for the local snapshots, because local snapshots will surrender their disk space if needed.

  • Since upgrading firefox why is the system slowed down to the point of frustration i.e scrolling upand down , clicking on pages it seems to take an age

even filling this form in has taken a lot longer than just clicking and typing ,scrolling down a page it seems to pause then stutters . if i have various web pages open to compare something similair it seems to be slowing down . To write this some of the actions to write seems to halt and i am not a fast typer .just tried your installed plugins window it wont move

Possibly something in the profile got damaged. You could try troubleshooting.

I am seeing more and more of these complaints since Mozilla began trying to force updates. I think it is time to disable updates to Firefox and avoid the use of the "Check for Updates" button (since it no longer merely checks). You can see the current release version on the green button on this page:

  • Why does my MacBook Air's shutting down slow down after the recent update?

After the newly update OS X Update 10.9.4, the shut down of my MacBook Air slows down. It will stay several seconds more than before the update. This happens every time I try to shut down my MacBook, please meet my problem.

A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches that may help.
Startup your Mac in Safe Mode
A Safe Mode boot takes much longer than a normal boot so be patient.
Once you are in Safe Mode, click Restart from the Apple () menu.
Once your Mac has booted to the desktop, click Shut Down from the Apple () menu to test.

  • Airport slows down after the latest update !

I have a ibook running the latest version of the masOs . After doing a automatic software update ( if I recollect it did a MacOs and Airport update - the computer has slowed down and access the wireless networks with great difficulty ! How do we resolve this problem or go back to the earlier version ?

What kind of difficulty accessing wireless networks?
    I've experienced no such problems.
Did you quit all running applications before installing the 10.4.6 update? I always quit all running applications before installing any OS, Software or Security updates.
Before installing a major OS Update such as 10.4.6, I always check my hard drive for any directory problems with Disk First Aid repair via Disk Utility when booted from my Tiger install disc.
As a first step, I suggest Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption for system troubleshooting procedures and when doing so, follow all steps/instructions in the order provided.
To revert to an earlier 10.4 x version such as 10.4.5 will require re-installing 10.4 via your 10.4 install package (archive & install selecting preserve user and network settings) and then update to the chosen version only.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • HT4528 My iPhone 4s has slowed down in the last few days.

OK it slowed down but now trying to get information on web browsers does not work. Does anyone have a suggestion. Could this be from iCloud dumping pictures on my phone?

added to the problem you have mine suddenly closes the app I am in.
I reckon it is because of not updating the software with ios8.
I read some reviews that ios 8 makes it hard to use your iphone and will need lot of memory

  • Why does my MBP slow down throughout the day?

If I reboot my MBP it will run very fast, nice and zippy.  But as the hours go on it seems to slow down to a crawl.  I am noticing this in particualr in PS where I can run a program called Portraiture (for example) that will run almost instantly after a reboot and then hours later will take as much as 25 or 30 seconds to run.
The only thing that I have noticed is it does seem to correspond (possibly) with an external hard drive I attach to it frequently.  I did this morning again and noticed it starting to slow shortly after.  Ejecting the disk and unplugging it doesn't help, but ejecting it, unplugging and rebooting does help.  (Though I don't kow if it is just the reboot that is helping and not neccesarily the disk)  This ext HD is one that was used with my PC and is now being used to transfer files from the old PC to the new Mac.  Could this be the problem?  Have you ever heard of this being an issue?
I just used a tool called the band aid tool- this is something that is used for retouching.  When using this tool it is typically instant but just now it took about 45 seconds for it to do it's job.  I looked at the activity monitor and it was showing only 2% memory usage at the time.
This seems a bit odd to me.
    MBP, Lion, 2.3GHZ, 8GB RAM.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Counter slows down when the number of the expected pulses don't arrive

    G'Day Everyone,
I'm having a problem with some counter work I'm doing, and can't seem to work out where the problem lies. I'm using a NI-PCI-6602, and I setup the counter, send a couple of DIO lines high (this tells the attached custom electonrics to fire), and then clock the pulses that arrive. I'm looking for four pulses to come back (I set this using "Counter Buffer Config.vi" and look for them with "Counter Read Buffer.vi"), and it works really well when four pulses arrive. Unfortunately, sometimes the instrument may not send all of the four pulses (I occasionally get back 0, 1, 2 or 3 pulses). When this happens, my VI slows down remarkably - when all four are there I get in the order
of 10ms response times, but if one or more are missing it slows down to approximately 1000ms. I've set the "time limit" input of "Counter Read Buffer.vi" to 10ms, but using the (often unpredictable) VI Profile utility, it seems that the hold up is either when I arm or disarm the counter using "Counter Control.vi". I've attached the VIs llb for your interest.
Any help that you can give will be truly appreciated!
    cheers,
    Christopher

Thanks for the help everyone (especially Darren who guided me toward the solution) - the problem was a simple one, but I couldn't see the forest from the bush fires: the project is based on LabVIEW 5.1 (old project, no money - I'm sure you all know the deal!), and so a clean install gave the errors. It turns out that the board (6602) was released after LabVIEW 5.1 (and hence LabVIEW5.1's default NI-DAQ), so a fresh NI-DAQ install corrected any problems...
    thanks again!

  • Computer beginning to slow down, seeing the little rainbow curser more and

    Hi,
I'm seeing that little rainbow curser more and more and the computer is slowing down when shifting between programs where it didn't before. For example, when I jump from Excel to Safari there's a lag where there never used to be. I have plenty of memory both internally and externally. What can I do? I've already ran the Disk Utility.
    Thanks,

A note of caution there... the Desktop is not an infinite storage bin. If you keep a lot of files especially music, video you can "choke" the Desktop and recovery is no fun. I keep all my files in the Documents folder but since that folder gets used by applications also I create a folder within Documents called,"MyStuff" and that is where all my files reside.
