Have you tried connecting to the test socket at the rear of the master socket
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

No magical keystroke remedy. The causes for this can be complicated.

  • Brand new MacBook Pro has really slow download and streaming speeds

I'm new to Macs, and don't know much about computers in general. But I got a 13" MacBook Pro almost two weeks ago and have been experiencing really slow download and video streaming speeds. Pages load one image at a time, Netflix is almost impossible to use because the videos will stop buffering every five minutes even if I let them buffer for more than ten minutes. I haven't been experiencing any issues with wifi on my phone, and I've troubleshot our router. I'm not sure what it could be--but then again, I don't know a whole lot. Before I go running off to the Apple Store or call support, is there anything I can try in the meantime? Thanks!
    Here are the system specs:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel Iris
    Software  OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
74.23 GB free out of 120.47 GB

Check with your isp regarding your download & upload speeds as well as streaming.  You need to determine if the issue is on their end.  You can also check on the speedtest.com website.  Compare what your isp tells you to the net speed website.

  • Is anyone with an iPhone 6plus experiencing slow downloads and problems streaming videos online?

is anyone with an iPhone 6+ experiencing slow download and slow video streaming online? I have had the iPhone 6 Plus and I've been experiencing my app is downloading a lot slower and being unable to stream videos online

I hope someone from Apple is monitoring this site. Three days apps will not update, iOS8.0. Support told me to update to iOS8.02. Can't do that over WIFI or Cell network. Supports tells me have to link to iTUNES and do this. That takes three trys. Did that. Apps still not updating. Read online that resetting network settings will help. Did that App's hanging and not updating.
Apple how does this happen. Night before iOS8.0 release you pull things because of some security issue. Then you have iOS8.01 fiasco and now this. Can someone get this right. We use these things for more than just phones now. FIX IT

  • What causes ipad/iphones wireless slow download and high upload?

Does anyone know what causes ipad/iphones wireless to have slow download and high upload? Tried using linksys e3000 and linksys ea6500 and ipads/iphones get approximatly 1Mbps Down and about 5Mbps Up. Macbook pro gets 46Mbps down and 5Mbps Up and is consistent. Does anyone have any wireless settings such as channel width and frequency that works best?

I have no idea, but i would not buy another apple device as of now.  I have 2 iphones (3GS, 4) and an iPad 2 on my home wifi.  They usually get between 1-5mb speeds on wifi (i have a 50mb connection).  I tested my laptop, 50+mb, my android phone 25mb+, yet every apple device on its best moment gets 5...usually 3 or lower.
I've tried everything...Different channels, WMM/QOS on/off, Wireless N only, Wireless G/N, i have a wireless N Verizon Fios router, i've shut wireless off on that and hooked up a D-link 655...tried everything, and still the sucky speeds.  It's set to WPA2/AES.  I can not even watch an HD youtube video without it pausing every few seconds.
Apple is no help, Verizon is no help...i'm completely out of ideas.

If you have been trying to download from the App store then this may be the problem.
try downloading from here, faster and more stable.

but first before installing check that you're iPhoto is version 3.6.1
if it is not this version try to update it
after install of 10.10.3 new Photos app gets installed and if you didn't have the latest iPhoto version
you will lose it, but your pictures will still be in your iPhoto library.

  • Iphone 6 app store slow download and update over wifi

Just recently noticed, my iphone 6 app store takes more than 20 min to update and download apps with wifi. With my carrier's LTE downloads and updates are fine. I've done speed tests as well on my iphone using home wifi, with good results. Surfing the net, and using other apps using home wifi works fine as well. App store downloads and updates are my only problem. Tried doing resets to no avail.
    Anyone else experiencing this problem?

I'm having the exact same issue as you described on my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2.

  • Slow startup and password issue.

    Hi all...
    Happy new year...!
As a little christmas present for myself I purchased a Crucial M4 256GB SSD for my MacPro 4,1 (2.26GHz, 22GB RAM, 10.8.2). I'm a semi-pro photographer and wanted a bit of a speed up for my processing etc etc. So yesterday I cloned my existing system drive to the SSD with Carbon Copy Cloner. I then installed the SSD in the spare superdrive bay (my other 4 bays are used).
Just as a background my previous startup/shutdown times on this machine where quite slow averaging around 90s for startup and around 45s for shutdown. I had assumed that this was normal and was just a slow syetm HD issue. When I changed the startup disk to the new SSD and booted up the startup time did decrease but not significantly... its now exactly 59s whilst the shutdown times go down to around 30s. In use the speed of the OS is massively improved with applications and local file copying blazingly fast. I've a few friends who upgraded MacBook Pro's and others macs with SSD's and their startups are around 10-15 seconds....!!! I'm not overly bothered by the slow startups/shutdowns but I am curious as to what might be causing these delays. In testing today I deleted everything unecessary from my user account startup items, disabled various apps and checked the /library/startupitems for anything that shoudnt be there. After a couple of hours trying I cant find anything that is effecting the startups and am lost. I'll likely just accept it and move on as in use the SSD is impressive but if anyone has any ideas it'd be appreciated!
A second thing that has happened is that whenever I try to delete/modify/move an app I am now asked to type in my user password. I have tried repairing permissions, checking the permissions of my .Trash folder etc etc but as of yet nothing has worked. Any ideas...??
Many thanks and Happy New Year yet again.
    Richie

The traditional way an Operating System deals with "deleted" files is to remove ONLY the Directory information and simply add the data blocks to the free pool. Those "deleted" data blocks are not cleared.
This works in rotating drives because:
    1. The logical block size is the same or larger than the physical drive block size.
    2. Rotating magnetic media are block-for-block re-writable.
In SSDs physical blocks are much larger "superblocks", and re-writing a portion of a superblock is a slow and difficult read-modify-write operation. In addition, since the OS did not notify the drive what data are no longer needed, deleted data continue to be carefully maintained and re-written by the drive. Soon every write operation becomes a read-modify-write, and performance deteriorates.
In my opinion, this nearly-full condition is likley to cause drive failure. Something more than wishful thinking is required.
Apple enables TRIM on the drives they install directly. They do not do so for third-party drives, but that is likely because those drives have not been tested by Apple.
I have been using a very small SSD as a boot drive for a while, and periodically consolidate free space followed immediately by erasing free space with a third-party utility. I believe this has kept me out of trouble. My son has been using SSD in his laptop and doing nothing for maintenece, and he has killed two drives in a year.
Trim Enabler utility from groths seems to be working, and makes things simple. Your mileage may vary.
if I notice significant performance slips
You added a much lower latency drive and startup times did not improve significantly. Much of the time required for startup is needed for memory testing. The rest is largely attributable to disk Read/Write times. What more evidence do you need?

  • Stupid slow downloads and uploads

    Help please
Right now I am uploading a file using Fetch. The average speed is 342 bytes/s (no K here, just bytes). That's an hour and a half for a 1.3mb file. It takes 15 seconds to one minute everytime I click on a link on this site. I keep iStat on my desk so I can keep track of my lack of speed. Usually when browsing download average is about 5Kb/s. Exceptions are when I do speed tests ( Verizon 12 KB/s DSL reports 172Kb/s now) and my iStat jumps up to over 100 KB/s momentarily. Keep in mind that I am doing all of this at 3am est -- not exactly prime time. The other thing is that if I use Limewire to download (legal) files, it will maintain over 100 KB/s for an extended period. I have also tried all of the Verizon stuff -- shut down everything for 2 minutes then start the router then computer, no help. This is a new Intel iMac, no firewall, 10.4.10 wired to the DSL router, no firewall, on Verizon 768 mb service. I tried pinging Apple.com (from Florida_ and the range was from 106 ms to 279 ms
Any ideas? this has gotten noticably worse over the past week or 2

check the DNS settings on this DSL router, if you can get to the admin panel.
check the DNS settings in your mac.
find openDNS website, use their numbers, see if this helps.
Go into SysPrefs>Sharing>firewall>Advanced...make sure there are no checks ticked there.
Instead of pinging, use "Traceroute" (use apple.com again) in NetworkUtility, and see if you can tell where it looks like things 'slow down', if you can.
Then repeat that test using IP address 17.254.3.183
Not sure what might have happened in the past week or two, but something [sounds like it] did.

  • Slow downloads and software updates despite fast internet connection

    Hello,
I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 on a 1.25Ghz iMac G4. I have an 0x14E4, 0x4E Airport Extreme card, and can connect to Safari quite quickly.
My only trouble is with software updates and downloads - with software updates, the download speed gets ridiculously low and comes virtually to a standstill. When downloading from the internet, the download speed is slightly better but still very slow.
I have tested my connection on speedtest.net, and results say my download speed is of only 0.5 Mbps, whilst a more recent Macbook Pro connected to the same wifi network achieved 10.2 Mbps.
I had posted this in the G4 section and was told to post my issue here, another user having sugested that this might be coming from my ISP's DNS assignments.
Any idea what this might be coming from?
    Thanks,
    Kieran.

    Hi,
Thanks for your answer. I upgraded Safari and my download speed has improved - Speedtest gave it 1.43Mbps - but this is still far from the 10.2Mbps other computers on the network have.
Could this have anything to do with my Airport card? Would my connection be faster if it was using an ethernet cable rather than wireless?
    Thanks,
    Kieran

  • MBA slow downloads and TC backup

I just got a MBA and the internet seems to be working at similar to my MBP, but the download speeds are extremely slow. It took about 30 minutes to download the software updates and the migration assistant would not work. I received an error message that said to check my network. My MBP works fine, so I do not believe it is the network.
Most of the post I have found here have problems with connections dropping, but I do not believe that is my problem. The connections seem to be consistent - they are just consistently slow.

After recent general software and Safari 4.0 beta updates, my MBA has really became annoyingly slow with the internet. Before that everything was perfect and enjoyable. Now I can't stand it anymore and I can't find an explanation, especially taking into account the the iMac (also with Safari 4.0 beta and software updates) and iPhone work well.
    Can anyone explain, please?

  • Slow download and upload speed through vpn+samba

I`m connecting to Lenovo  EMC PX12-450r through a vpn connection. The upload and the download speed are maximum 350kb/s. If i connect through the same vpn and copy files to another samba server within the same network the speeds are ok. Are there any settings that i`m missing?
Laptop - VPN Client - SonicWall - Lenovo EMC PX12-450r = low speeds
Laptop - VPN Client - SonicWall - Windows with writeable file sharing = speeds OK
Laptop - VPN Client - SonicWall - Linux with samba writeable directory = speeds OK

    Hello darkmac
If the unit's local Samba transfer speeds seem normal, then the issue would most likely be on the VPN server or your firewall settings.
From the device end you would want to double check that you have the correct DNS, gateway, vlan, etc configurations
If the unit's Samba transfer speeds seem to be slow locally as well I recommend cycling the Samba (windows file sharing/cifs) protocol in the web interface to see if that corrects the issue.
Another item to check into is if the Media server features is enabled.  It can cause noticable performance drops to other protocols when enabled.

  • Slow Download and Upload speeds ADSL1

For weeks now my internet has been slow. When I tried to downlaod an update to my GPS with and estimated time of 2hours 32 minutes, I blew my stack when the time was shown to be over 300 hours. Ran Speedtest and I get 0.7Mbps at best, often less than that. Tried the chat facility and it timed out while chatting to Hazel because the download stopped altogether. SO I telephoned (surprised something from Telstra actually worked) and logged a complaint. The chap said someone would call me with 18 hours. Well, you can guess. What am I to do? Telstra has the infrastructure here and I feel trapped: they do not call me and I have no alternative. Any suggestions?

    Hi dmacster,
I apologise for any inconvenience or frustration this may have caused you. Please speak to technical support team with your complaint number and we can check on the complaint status for you.

  • Very slow downloads and frequent timeouts

    Hi,
I've been using the iTunes store with no problems, until about 2 weeks ago. Usual download time for a tv episode is around 40 mins, but now its varies from 80 - 120 hours per episode, that is if it does not time out.
I've been searching around the forums and found something quite interesting under "Using iTunes for windows". A user from japan said that he was getting the same problem, but he used Anonymizer SSL to bypass his ISP and connected straight to the Anonymizer servers in the USA. This, he said, made his download times normal again. The thing is, Anonymizer SSL is only for Windows.
His theory was that iTunes was blocking all foreign IP addresses, so as to prevent their servers from congestion from users outside USA. By using Anonymizer SSL, his IP address was invincible from the iTunes servers, thus allowing him to download at normal speed. Has anyone heard about this yet? I'd like to know if there are any users outside USA who are currently having problems with the US ITunes store. Then, we might be able to really see what's going on.
I'd really appreciate it if someone could lend a hand and shed some light on this problem. I've got hundreds of dollars worth of movies and music that are still waiting to be downloaded.
    Thanks in Advance.
    Ben
P/S: Anyone know of an Anonymizer software for macs? Cheers!

If you go further down in the discussion forum you will see that there are a few of us who are experiencing the same problem. I live in Greece, and although I have proceeded with all the suggested steps, more times than not in the past week, I cannot connect to the ITS
Apple has not given me any useful tips.

  • Extremely slow download speeds and internet browsing on Macbook pro

I recently got a 13"" macbook pro. System config - Maverick OS/i7 dual core/8GB RAM/750 GB HDD, Almost 690GB of free space available. I am expriencing extremely slow download and internet browsing speed. I have to wait for almost 10-12 seconds for normal sites to download. The app updates and downloads are painstakingly slow.
The internet speeds are working perfectly fine on my Windows Laptop, and even on my mobile phones. So, the there's no issue of network. Also, I have cleared safari cache etc, just to be sure. But nothing's really helping.
Can any one help me here.
    Thanks !
    Chetan

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If the answer is no, do that now and see whether there's any change.
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
